Keynote: 2.66 Million - Cheryl Hung, Director of Ecosystem, Cloud Native Computing Foundation

Over the last 4 years, Kubernetes has redefined what it means to run software. It empowers people to do more than they could do before - to ship faster, to use less resources, to understand the behaviour of thousands of applications running on tens of thousands of machines. Now the CNCF is home to 36 projects, and growing. Cheryl will share some initiatives from the CNCF to ensure a happy and healthy community.

Good morning Barcelona and welcome to cube con.

I'm sure we'll hung I'm the director of ecosystem at the CN CF and before I explain what this 2.66 million number refers to. I want to tell you why I am so personally passionate about kubernetes and about cloud native, so I started out as an engineer at Google I was writing C++ and deploying it using Borg, but when I left Google in 2015 I had a bit of culture shock, it turns out. Not every company in the world builds and runs its software in this way.

So my experience as a developer using Borg is why I I really believe in the power of kubernetes and why I'm so excited to see how fast it spread and how far and the growth really has been stunning. So in the last year the CNC F grew by a hundred and thirty percent and we're now more than four hundred members, including our newest member latest Goldmember kong.

The end user community has also grown rapidly in the same time and on Wednesday. If you'll hear from one of our newest end-user members Conde Nast international. This is truly a transformational moment. More and more companies are relying on these projects for their core business.

But what exactly are they relying on they're, relying on 2.6 6 million contributions from 50, 6214 contributors.

And that's anyone who's ever made or reviewed a comment commits issue or pool request on github across any of the 36 projects hosted by the CNC F, and this doesn't even include contributions through slack cause documents, speaking blog posts and much more one of the reasons the CNC F exists is to sustain the people who are coming into this contributor pipeline. That's people who use these projects share their experiences, contribute and eventually lead, but there's a lot of hurdles to overcome, for example out of the 56,000 contributors. How many would you guess are women.

5,500, actually, the answer is 1800 about three percent and I'm, not blaming anyone. Here, I run the cloud native London, meetup and I actively encourage women to speak in two years. I've had 10 talks from women and even worse, I gave 2 out of those 10. So even though I care about this I haven't figured it out yet more and more open source contributions are leading to full-time roles in open source.

Those who can't contribute will miss out on these opportunities, so I want to share with you some initiatives aimed at encouraging people into this pipeline.

We've helped more than 300 people from underrepresented groups come to cubic on cloud native con, including 56 here in Barcelona, and here's three contributors who started out as diversity, scholars so on the left is Mohammed. He lives in Bangalore and he was a part of the release team for kubernetes 112 and he now works full-time on open shift in the middle is Cheryl. She was a computer science student and she is the current release.

Branch manager for kubernetes 115, as well as contributing to keep ADM and parts of the kubernetes documentation and on the right is another shower. That's me: I started out as a diversity scholar here in cube. Con I started the cloud native London meetup group and now at the CN CF I help other organizations be successful as they adopt cloud native.

Companies also need to hire and support their developers working in open source, so tomorrow I'm giving a talk on navigating the cloud native ecosystem focusing on why and how the CN CF supports end-users and we're also starting to new user groups for industry, specific collaboration.

And last but not least, we want our current community to be happy and healthy, and that's you so this month is mental health awareness month and we're really proud to have partnered with open sourcing Mental Illness. This is a volunteer lead foundation who promotes awareness and education around mental health in tech.

So you should have already received a conference handbook with some tips about Kubik on cloud native con, if you feel stressed, or overwhelmed at any time, go to the OS mi booth in hor seven and speak to one of the volunteers there and then there's also a talk on mental health in tech today at 11:05.

So if we're going to go from two point, six: six million to five million to ten million and beyond the key, is to sustain the people as they go from users to contributors to leaders. A friend of mine in Italy messaged me the other week. It was the last week his current job and he'd just been hired to work full-time on one of the CN CF projects and he's super excited about it. He said to me the cool thing: is it doesn't matter where we work, where we work, we're all working on the same things?
