Enjoy a private songwriter showcase performance by Michael Hicks followed by a live virtual meet + greet! Hicks is a unique blend of talent and humility which is rarely found in today’s emerging talent. As an artist, writer, and performer, Hicks is revered as one of the best in the diverse Funk and Soul music scene in Nashville and beyond. His Freshman album, This Is Life, highlights the talents of his writing ability, the moral message of his music, and the production talents of both himself and James Waddell. When he’s not writing and performing his own original music, Hicks is on the road touring the world with Blues icon, Keb’ Mo. International touring has lent him years of maturity that most young artists never get to experience. This interesting blend of influences and experiences have made him “the” artist to watch in Nashville.

My name is mike hicks welcome to sound emporium studios in nashville, tennessee, music city, usa, um and I got some friends here with me: phippy in the gang and here in nashville as a singer-songwriter. You gotta know how to tell a little bit about your songs as well as play your songs, and so that's what we'll do and uh we're gonna play some music for y'all. So, thanks for having us and let's.

So I've been playing shows of my own now for over a decade and I needed something um to put at the top of my shows.

So I just sat down one day and was like you know what I want to write, something that kind of has a vibe that is reminiscent of mold sound stax records, staples singers and there's a little bit of all of that in a song called come go with me and initially it was just kind of a call to join us in the fun, and it was just a way for me to open up the show, but it's become something that is um a bit more meaningful.

Now there are references to you know a hypothetical place in the future, where the things that ail us now are no longer there, where there's no division and brutality and poverty and whatnot so yeah. Here we go come go with me.

And we ain't gonna worry about trying to please nobody else.

We won't be pressured into lives of conformity, no no, a place where there's no bigotry or brutality, and you know what that's all right with me. Let's.

I'm grab, I'm gonna grab my guitar um for this song. um It's called feels good. It's one of the first songs that I wrote from the guitar like when guitar started, becoming kind of a primary writing instrument and it's funny how songs live and breathe and move and evolve over time. When I first wrote it, I only knew like two or three chords- and I only know a few more since then, but initially it went. um Let me see feels.

Good to wake up in the morning and lift my hands breath sinking while I'm yawning, but at least I woke up again.

And like that was the kind of vibe and it's just a song about just taking joy in being alive and the things that come with life, so um yeah yeah. Let's check out feels.

Hey uh so this song is a song that I wrote for my brother's wedding and I consider myself, I'm usually a lyrics first writer, so I had the thought of um falling in love with somebody and and them leaving you speechless, and so that was kind of the. I knew that was going to be the concept of the song and the first thing that came was actually like the end of the chorus. The tag um is this.

Finally, I figured it out I'll, simplify. If I may, I loved you, then I love you now. I love you forever and always.

And so it was actually about it's a resolve to the speechless thing so like being speechless, but then finally figuring out what to say and that what to say being really simple. Like I loved you, then I love you now I love you forever and uh yeah. This is speechless.

Verbal descriptions pale. My vocabulary fails, there's not really much that I can say.

So I was on a cruise back in, I guess, 2015 or 2016., um my wife, and I she was my girlfriend at the time we were on a cruise where I was playing for an artist working and we had a lot of time off. So I took some gear and I wanted to write and at the time I was really heavy into sly, stone. Parliament funkadelic- and there was this kind of vibe that just came as I'm sitting somewhere in the ocean. That was.

Kind of just funk- and this was one of the few songs that was music first and it just felt good to me- want to make it a big kind of gang, vocal group chant thing like a really affirming type message of being proud of who you are so yeah. This is it. We are who we.

Where I would have no choice, I was gonna, have this white nose and a decent singing voice and.

Even though my childhood sometimes.

And this black hair of mine.

Golden rule, and as long as I remember, my granddaddy wasn't ever thin. He was over qualified to tell me that boyfood is your friend.

And with my cousin anthony the fun would never stop. We share a love for basketball. He introduced me to hip-hop now that legacy.

We had a great time so this last song is called be and as a songwriter in this town, one of the ways to kind of continue to hone your skill in your craft and also make connections and hope to get placements, and whatever else is to co-write.

I don't co-write nearly as much as I should, um and co-writing is basically what it sounds like it's when two more people get together and write a song, so I wrote this with a friend of mine named ron gilmore, who at the time was living in new york, and he hit me and sent me a thing like hey man, I got a vibe for a song and a theme um you know, could you write it this?

This came to me probably from first line straight down the page um rather quickly, because it just it was everything that I felt and no, it didn't take much to say what needed to be said, and it's just a song about being yourself um in a time where we're so inundated with. um You know this trend, this fad, it's just a song that just encourages you to be yourself, and I think for this one. I'm probably gonna just stay right here and just do it by myself.

uh I'm gonna get friends out the way. I'm gonna shift this mic and move this over here. So I'm gonna do that and yeah and we'll play it, and this is called b.

Everybody wants to be somebody, but not everybody wants to feed themselves. We'd rather be eat. Someone else, and everybody wants to be somebody. We all wish that we had more of what society tells us to strive for.

We change the outside to look better. Listening to what other folks tell us, why can't we see that we should just be as kids, we try to be grown, but then, when grown, we long for youth again. Why can't we see that we should just be just be you and me, be the.

Although it's never really quite worthwhile and everybody wants to be somebody- we hide a way not to be seen when our mirrors don't reflect the tv screen.

We change the old sun to look better listening to what our cultures tell us. Why can't we see that we should just be just as the winds of change will blow trend. Defense will come and go quite constantly, so we should just be just be you and me be the best that we can be.
