Lightning Talk: Code Kubernetes While You Are Using It - Mario Loriedo, Red Hat

This lightning talk is about deploying a development platform on a Kubernetes cluster and using it to code and rollout an Kubernetes component update. Without stopping coding. To do so we are going to use Eclipse Che, a container based IDE that runs on Kubernetes and is particularly adapted for rapid cloud native development.

Hi everyone, some actually I'm gonna talk about that I'm, not really going to use to do that right now. The demo will be tomorrow and the day after at the Riyadh booth, if you're interested. But let's talk about the development thought from today, that's called che that we are building and now we can use that to develop a kubernetes controller.

First, so I will introduce myself. My name is Mario. I worked for Reddit in the developer group and I work in a great open source project that is called Eclipse che. It is a web IDE that runs in containers, but, let's start from from the beginning.

So in the last years we've been we've been seeing a lot of people, including myself, trying to run a lot of application of different types. Unconventional continues, ation. We call it that we have been trying to use desktop application inside containers and including IDE like eclipse or IntelliJ or sublime text, but that doesn't work so I mean those application are not built to run in containers. So these were cool acts, but at the end that didn't work and did it get fraction.

But the idea to have an IDE, continued rised shared with all your team, repeatable development environment will help team to to go faster and to scale. So. For that reason we have built J so J as a acuity is 1988 IDE he's he has a web front-end. Yes, it can be controlled using an API. He has a micro service architecture.

He has telemetry language service protocol support, so you can add languages with small services that run in containers. It is compatible with Visual Studio code extensions. You can import cloud application in your che workspaces and we have also worked in a Cuban ideas. Customers for school workspace that you did and a controller for that so that it's completely integrated in in in kubernetes. So, but how does it look like so this is? These are for screenshot of of che the first one, as you can see, I'm using the command palette is real.

Look, look, look like just real code. The second screenshot is, you can see auto completion there, so you have auto completion, as you expect in word, in every IDE and the third one is the bugging you can do the bugging from your browser action.

Third, one is a lot of people are asking okay, but do you have a do? You have a terminal shell that I can open from my ID yeah yeah. We have that as well. So that's that's! That's pretty cool, but the the topic of the of the talk was about developing a Cuban Eddy's component. So in this case, let's assume that you want to start contributing to kubernetes and R is like controller that you've seen you wanted. You wanna change, something on that one.

So what what you can do is that you can use che for that. So you set up your development cube really this cluster on mini cube or whatever you have your controller. You deploy it. You you test it. You can deploy che there. So that's the chase, server pod and from that you can do a request to a server pod. That will create a che workspace for you. The share workspace will have for container. This is in this example, as it has for containers. The first container contains the go tooling.

So what allows you to do code, navigation in your source code? The second containers contains your command line. Pooling 31 contains the the web application that does the IDE and the third one is the Cuban Eddy's tooling, from business via code extension. So using that you will be able, when you start the workspace to clone your source code, and you will be able to start coding and when you're done, you can deploy the new controller on your cluster and that's it. You have changed your controller. You modified the version of Q Burnett.
