Building and Scaling Cloud Native Nordics; Tips, Tricks, and Lessons Learned - Lucas Käldström, Independent & Kasper Nissen, Lunar
In this talk, Lucas and Kasper will share their experiences building a Cloud Native Community in the Nordic countries; Finland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Bootstrapping a decentralized community of meetup speakers, enthusiasts, organizers, and companies can be challenging to get right. Key issues to solve on a community-level includes aggregation of data, standardizing common patterns and practices on running meetings, documenting how to start new groups, collaborating with CNCF, setting up communication channels and organizing monthly calls. Lucas and Kasper will share their stories on organizing Meetups and similar events, scaling this community, and becoming CNCF Ambassadors. They will give practical tips and tricks for the audience to apply to their local community in turn. After this talk you’ll know how to get 10 meetup groups with 4600 members in total to collaborate.

community

meetups

across
the
Nordic
countries

easily
is
that
right?
It
can't
be
that
hard
to
just
gather
some
people
talk
about
the
stuff
that
you're
interested
in.
So
let's
talk
a
bit
about
that,
then
about
our
experience
in
it's
actually
running
meetup
groups
in
standalone
and
in
different
cities
and
then
introduced
what
what
we
have
been
doing
for
the
past
yeah
approximately.

not

but
it's
sometimes,

kind
of
thing

how

we've
been
experimenting

us

professional
video
editors
or
TV

quality
streamers,

it's
before
realizing
all
the
pitfalls

been
quite
some
things,

actually
one
of
the
major
things

how
can
we
make
build
a
social
media

community
marketing
around

kinds

things?

we
make
it
attractive
for
speakers,
but
also
sponsors

attendees,
to
come
to
these
places
and.

everything
that

with

building
a
community
like
sustaining
it,
like
keeping
people
engaged,
keeping
the
community
healthy,
being
inclusive
to
new
ideas,
experiences
and
that
kind

thing.

that's

started

doing
it
and
then
we're
learning
as
we
go,
but
a
bit
about
how
how
I
started
it.
I
came
to
Seattle
in
in
3
years
ago,
at
cube,
cone
and
I
saw
the
one
of
the
tack
points
cloud
meetups
the
day
before
I
was
like
yeah
I
want
to
do
this.

It's
amazing
and
then
half
a
year
puffier
like
later
or
something
like
that,
I
I
went
through
I'll.
Think
I
lived
500
kilometres
from
from
the
capital
in
Finland,
so
it's
also
logistical
issues,
but
I
had
to
find
like
other
co-organizers
in
the
capital
which
could
help
help
it's
like
logistics.
Networking
I
found
onion
TMO,
then
a
couple
of
months
after
that
three
four
we've
had
our
first
meetup
in
Helsinki
and
have
been
running
those
on
two
months,
one
by
monthly
basis
approximately.

then
we

found
myself
doing
a
lot
of
work,
which
is
just
like
a
lot
of
it
is
repet,
repetitive
and
but
also
a
lot
of
it
is
like
network
like
how
can
I
find
these
people
and-
and
how
can
I
sustain
the
group
so
I
just
chatting
with
Caspar
and
we're
thinking,
sharing
these
stories
with
with
each
other,
and
we
find
out
that?
Well,
let's,
let's
do
something
together.

Approximately
a
year
ago,
then
expanded
to
new
cities,
thumper
and
Oracle
proximately,
the
second
and
third
largest
now
which,
where
we
want
to
get
you
involved
too,
is
building
these
these
kinds
of
tools
and
using
these
kind

tools
for
for
building
communities,
which
is
yeah
a
pretty
pretty
interesting
thing.
We're
hoping
to
get
broader
traction
with
this
just
short
about

thinking.

approximately
eight
nine
hundred
members
temporary,
which
we
started
like
January
this
year,

yeah
a
fair
amount
of
activity,
but
still
we've
trying
to
find
different,
different
ways
of
expanding
it.

all
of
these,

we're

about
the
solutions
here,
but
basically
everything
like
finding
speakers
and
practical
profiles.

of
the
same
story

home,

I
guess
I'm
living
in
this
city
called
almost
it's
a
secondary
city
in
Denmark.

for

don't

it's
around
350,000
people.
So
it's
not
that
big
of
a
city

yeah
I
just
wanted
to
organize
meetups.
Basically,
I
wanted
somebody
to
actually
to
talk
to
about
these
new
technologies,
because
back
in
in
2016
I
was
writing.

blog,

I
we
got
the
chance
to
actually
presented
that
I
had
a
Google
developer
group,
you
know
who's
and
you
got
a
lot
of
people
coming
up
and
there
was
a
lot
of
discussions
around

technologies,

this
was
sort
of
about
the
first
four
was
actually
born
of.
We
should
do
a
meetup
group.

technologies,
but
at
that
time
I
didn't
actually
got
a
job
working
with
Cuban
Eddie's.
It
was
still
new
and
nobody
was
actually
doing
this.
But
then
I
was
luckily
too
lucky
to
get
hired
by
a
company
that
was
sort
of
moving
into
this
new
world
and
wanted
to
do
kubernetes.
So
yeah
I
was
hired
by
moon
away
and
now
doesn't
matter,
and
they
had
a
problem
of.

How
do
we
actually
manage
my
groceries
because
they
were
sort
of
starting
this
journey
of
building
a
lot
of
micro
service,
but
they
sort
of
forgot
the
infrastructure
and
and
all
the
management
of
doing
the
micro
services.
So
we
needed
something
to
actually
help
us
with
that
and
that's
sort
of
where
our
communities
came
into
the
picture
and
at
the
same
time
I
got
hired.

I
started
the
Danish
slack
community,
just
two
girls
on
people
and
and
figure
out
who's
actually
doing
stuff
around
kubernetes
in
denmark,
because
you
need
to
talk
to
each
other
and
sort
of
share
experiences.
And
then
half
a
year
later,
we
yeah
created
the
first
meetup
group
and
and
started
talking,
and
we
have
been
running
a
lot
of
meetup
groups
or
meetups
since
that
day,
and
we
actually
had
one
month.
We
did
free
meetups,
which
is
a
maybe
too
much
but.
