Keynote: Fostering Kubernetes Community Growth Through Learning - Le Tran, Member of Technical Staff, Kasten by Veeam

Growing the Kubernetes community is essential for ensuring its strong and prosperous future. But Kubernetes and cloud native ecosystems overall are a complex web of knowledge, and it’s critical to continue to create bridges into the community via open learning tools and platforms. In this way, we can eliminate the barriers of entrance and grow the community effectively. To that end, the team at Kasten by Veeam has been working on building a free Kubernetes training site, Learning.Kasten.io. Through the site, new and existing members of the Kubernetes community can access blog posts, videos, books and hands-on labs, in order to create a comprehensive environment for learning about Kubernetes – one that is engaging, diverse and welcoming.

During this session, Le Tran, a member of the technical staff from Kasten, will share her insights on the journey toward growing the Kubernetes community through learning tools, as well as her own story of becoming a member of the community.

Good morning, Detroit I'm excited to be here and quite honestly, I'm humbling to be going after such a talk.

um So thank you for having me and having the time and listening to me, I'm with cassin by veeam, and we focus on community data protection, backup and disaster recovery and I'm especially accepted as kukon, because we're talking about booting for the road ahead. As of last year, we've had 5.6 million developer globally, who use kubernetes and that number Grew From 3.9 million from the year before.

That is quite some growth having 1.7 million new folks joining us in one year and as we are probably familiar with clouded technology in general and Community specifically, might not be the most beginner friendly topic out there. So it's important for us as a community to continue to lend a helping hand and continue to build bridges into our world through open learning tools and platform.

Ally I came from the other industry I used to work as an a better software engineer right here in Detroit and last year, I crossed the bridge myself to enter the kubernet community and at that point, I knew nothing about kubernetes I knew nothing about content and Technology. I didn't know, Network transport, I didn't know Goliath, so really I enter a world where I didn't know what I didn't know and now I'm at the point where I'm, operational and I can navigate myself into a new topic.

For example, I recently got to work with different identity providers, learning about authentication and authorization which been really fun for me, but my journey does not stop here, not at all, as you have so much to learn which I'm really excited about and the journey hasn't been exactly easy either. In fact it's been quite overwhelming, and that is because they're just so many different learning material out there. On the one hand, it's incredible to have this amount of material at your hand when you join a new community.

On the other hand, though, when you're new like me- and you look at this vast amount of material, one often wonder I mean where do I even start.

So as a result, I Rely, pretty heavily on the free and beginner friendly resources out there to bring myself up to speed and I've also realized that the one that worked for me on gauging had great quality and a fun to go through. So as an appreciation for the site and Creator out there who had helped me in the past.

I would like to give a personal shout out to the community book series to Coop Academy and to Tech work with Nana and among the free resources that I enjoy using one of them is actually homegrown a free site called learnitocasm.io.

It was introduced last year during cook on any 2021 as an initiative to address the need of having more creative trainings across all skill level, and the site had many different modality to learn from, but I'd like to focus today on one particular feature that I really like the Hands-On lab.

First of all, the labs are engaging I, learn best with having a mix of theorial contacts and Hands-On exercises and the lab they live with, just that.

They essentially a Sandbox where I get to work with viewer example using actual cluster without having to set them up, and the lab has great quality, even though they're meant to be beginner friendly as you get to learn a wide variety of topics ranging from completely beginning to professional level and the laughs are continuous release as well to add more and more topic like storage or application, consistency and, last but not least, they're pretty fun to go through the last I gamified.

So every lab I, complete combo digital badges that can share with social media, there's also a wall of fame for me to Showcase my progresses and they are pretty short which allow for incremental learning, which works great for me and when the lab sorry, when the site was introduced last year, it was said to be created for the community by the community with expert coming in to co-create labs and that still ring true today, with Labs featuring projects from the community.

Like grafana or Prometheus, or relevant blog posts like how to use minicube so leveraging the success from his first year, the site is entering his next chapter. The engaging the high quality and the fun material are still there, but we are continuing commitment to the community by completely transforming the site to cubecampus.io we're also taking the community involvement in the next level by opening it up a site to a Learning Partner. So together we can create an even bigger ecosystem of learning material.
