About Dan Kohn
Dan Kohn is Executive Director of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, which sustains and integrates open source technologies like Kubernetes and Prometheus. He also helped create and launch The Linux Foundation’s Core Infrastructure Initiative as an industry-wide response to the security vulnerabilities demonstrated by Heartbleed.
He previously served as CTO of several startups, including Spreemo, a healthcare marketplace, and Shopbeam, a shoppable ads company. Earlier, he was a general partner at Skymoon Ventures, a seed-stage venture capital firm that created startups in semiconductors and telecom infrastructure.
Dan helped manage a number of telecoms firms controlled by Craig McCaw and started his career as founder and CEO of NetMarket, one of the first Internet companies. In 1994, he led the development of the first music store on the web, conducting the first secure commercial transaction after building the first web shopping cart. Dan lives in Manhattan with his wife and two sons.

the

networking
supports
mobile
carriers
with
more
than
70%
of
the
world's
subscribers
CFCF
in
the
cloud
automotive
grade.
Linux
is
shipping
an
all-new
Toyota
car
as
another
number
of
other
manufacturers.

Hyper
ledger
is
one
of
the
leading
of
open-source
offerings
for
blockchain
and
a
new
Jas
is
now
the
most
popular
application
framework
and
we
actually
have
a
number
of
other
ones.
On
top
of
these
I
last
week
we
announced
a
new
program
that
I
would
think.
I'd
want
to
make
sure
folks
are
familiar
with
and
take
a
look
at.
It's
called
a
community
bridge.

You
can
learn
more
about
it
and
if
you
learn
a
new
bridge
dot-org
and
it's
designed
to
support
open
source
projects
and
open
source
of
developers
that
might
not
get
the
same
resources
as
an
organization
like
CN
CF
can
provide
but
remain
very
important
and
very
worth
supporting.
And
so
one
of
the
first
things
we're
doing
is
a
patreon
like
funding
service,
except
that,
rather
than
charging
10%
of
fees
or
13%
of
ease
about
the
links
foundation
is
charging
0%
fees
for
the
first
ten
million
dollars
to
pass
through
the
platform.

There's
also
a
security
scanning
service
and
then
a
particular
interest
we'd
like
to
make
you
aware
of
a
mentor-mentee
program
where,
if
you're
a
maintainer
on
an
open-source
project,
you
can
find
new
contributors.
If
you'd
like
to
get
involved
in
a
open-source
project,
you
can
volunteer
as
a
mentee
we
will
match
make
with
for
you
and
then
particularly
for
women
and
other
under
an
underrepresented
minorities.
We
have
$500,000
in
diversity,
grants
that
we're
making
available
a
crop
that's
across
the
world.
So
please
take
a
look

The
cloud
native
trail
map
I
hope
you
got
a
copy
as
you
checked
in
this
morning,
and
this
is
our
attempt
to
talk
about
the
journey
that
organizations
made
as
they
learn
about
and
adopt
cloud
native,
and
the
idea
is
that
the
very
first
thing
is
to
containerize
and
then
to
build
a
CI
CD
platform
and
only
then
to
look
at
orchestration
and
then
observability
and
service
meshes
and
everything
along
the
way.
And
so
it
is
a
little
oversimplified.

But
it
is
hopefully
helpful
to
you,
as
you
think,
about
the
different
ciencia
projects
and
how
they
fit
together.
But
it's
our
view
that
there's
literally
no
organization
in
the
world,
that's
using
all
CFCF
hosted
projects
and
no
third-party
commercial
products
or
other
open-source
projects,
and
so
we
do
keep
this
extremely
overwhelming
landscape.

is
at
times
been
described
as
helpful
as
overwhelming
and
as
the
hellscape
and
interestingly,
two
of
those
were
by
the
same
person,
but
I
do
think
it's
worthwhile
that
to
have
a
way
of
looking
at
this
and
thinking
about
for
each
given
area
like
key
management
or
a
container
registry.
What
are
the
options?

Either
commercial
or
open
source
and
there's
a
very
powerful
interactive
tool
that
I
encourage
you
to
try
out
on
your
on
your
phone
and
CNC
F
dot,
IO
the
URLs
at
the
top
that
lets
you
sort
and
filter
and
learn
about
it,
and
one
of
the
fun
things
is
that
we
can
come
in
and
say
just
show
us
the
projects
in
India.
And
we
can
see
here
that
there's
12

landscape.

with

in
user
community,
and
you
can
see
just
a
fantastic
group
of
companies
here
in
just

variety
of
different
industries,
finance,
publishing
and
e-commerce

their

this
cloud
native
journey.
So
this
is
our
first
ever
kubernetes
day,
event
I,
hopefully
know
some
of
you
have
attended
a
soupcon
Club
native
cons.
Those
are
our
much
bigger
events,
we're
holding
three
of
them
every
year
of
Barcelona,
Shanghai
and
San
Diego
this
year.

do
just
want
to,
and
you
can
see
that
there's
been
just
enormous
growth
for
these
events
over
time
that
we
started
with
500
people
in
attendance
and
in
Seattle
last
year
in
December
we
have
8,000
attendees
were
expecting
10,000
in
two
months
in
Barcelona,
so
it
really
does
speak
to
the
huge
level
of
interest
and
engagement
in
cloud
native
I.
Do
want
to
point
out
in
the
audience
who
be
speaking
later.

gonna,
be
key,
noting
not
just
here
to
burn
a
Tuesday,
but
also
in
two
months
in
Barcelona,
and
it's
really
fantastic
to
see
her
as
a
representative
of
the
Indian
development
community.
I
also
want
to
point
out
in
the
audience
deals
from
Huawei
who
is
a
member
of
the
kubernetes
steering
committee.
That
is
the
top
leadership
of
kubernetes
that
ultimately
decides
how
the
project
functions
and
and
how
things
work.

Finally,
I
want
to
let
you
know
about
a
couple
ciencia
programs
that
I
think
would
be
of
a
lot
of
interest
to
you.
We
offer
a
free
introduction
to
kubernetes
course
on
EDX,
and
this
is
a
great
way
of
getting
started
and
getting
up
to
speed
in
the
program
with
these
technologies.
We
also
have
a
300
dollar
course
that
teaches
the
fundamentals
of
kubernetes
and
prepares
you
for
our
online
exam
and
that
exam
is
called
the
certified
kubernetes
administrator
we've
already
had
6,000
people
take
it.
It
is
not
a
multiple-choice
exam.

You
are
actually
given
seven
different
clusters
over
the
course
of
three
hours
and
you
have
to
configure
them
or
debug
them
or
set
them
up
and
it.
So
it's
a
real
demonstration
of
your
proficiency.
We
also
have
a
certified
kubernetes
application
developer,
which
is
focused
on
people
who
are
designing
and
building
their
applications
to
run
on
top
of
kubernetes,
and
that
is
a
two
hour
exam
that
again
is
extremely
practical
and
I'm
very
excited
to
announce
that
we
are
offering
a
special
for
attendees
of
the
event.

about
