About three years ago, I made a 3D printed Cyborg Beast assistive device for Jose Delgado. (https://youtu.be/CHPuMCshkLU). I recently made a new design for Jose called the Osprey. This design was developed to be more robust, with improved grip strength. In this video, I interview Jose to talk about his experience with both designs.
Both of these designs (and others like them) are available as open source files that anyone can download and produce using a 3D printer and some commonly available materials.

thanks
for
joining
and
Jose,
has
been
using
these
3d
printed
assistive
devices
for
several
years
now.
I
made
this
one
here,
which
is
a
cyborg
Beast
design
and
I
made
this
for
him
about
three
years
ago,
and
these
are
mechanical
design.
So
they
work
simply
by
bending
the
wrist
there's
cords
tension
cords
in
here
that
cause
the
fingers
to
bend
and
then
there's
flexible
elastic
cords
in
this
design
that
causes
the
fingers
to
go
back.

So
it's
a
very
simple
design,
no
electronic
components
which
makes
them
very
inexpensive
to
make
this
one
here
cost
about
$35
to
produce,
and
it
works
for
Jose
for
about
three
years
right
and
then
one
of
the
pieces
finally
broke.
So
he
brought
it
back
and
I
did
a
rebuild
on
this.
One
did
some
repair
work,
but
I
also
made
a
new
design
which
he's
wearing
today,
that's
called
the
Osprey
hand,
and
that
one's
a
little
bit
different.

It's
made
with
some
leather
components
and
some
other
things
that
make
it
a
little
bit
stronger
and
more
robust,
which
I'll
show
you
a
close-up
on
that
in
a
in
a
short
while
so
you've
been
using
that
one
for
what
a
few
weeks
now
right
it
okay.
So
why
don't?
We
start
with
just
kind
of
talking
about
how
both
designs
have
been?
For
you
know
this
one
used
the
longest,
the
cyborg
Beast,
so
you
have
about
three
years
of
experience
with
that.
How
is
that
one
to
use
in
general
this
one,
a.

It's
got
a
better
grip,
strength
and
you're
saying
you
can
hold
things
better
with
it.
Okay,
that's
good
to
hear.
That
was
the
hope
with
that
design.
It
was
designed
for
an
older
individual,
rather
than
some
of
these
devices
are
more
commonly
used
with
smaller
children.
This
particular
design,
which
was
designed
by
Peter
Binkley,
was
developed
for
an
older
individual,
and
so
it
was
made
to
be
more
robust
and
stronger,
and
so
that
was
my
hope
that
might
work
out
better
for
you.
The
cyber
beef
design
by
the
way
was
produced
by
dr.
A
Jorge
zuniga
and
has
since
sort
of
evolved
into
some
of
these
other
designs
that
are
made
by
the
enable
volunteer
community
and
I'll
include
a
link
to
that
community
and
some
of
these
designs
down
in
the
video
notes.
The
Osprey
design
that
you're
wearing
today
that,
like
I,
said
that
has
some
leather
components
in
it.
So
it's
a
little
bit
more
expensive
to
make,
but
not
much.
It's
still
about
fifty
dollars
or
less
to
make
one
of
these
devices
compared
to
the.
When
these
devices
are
professionally
produced,
they
can
easily
run
into
the
thousands.

And
the
flexible
cords
that
design
uses
a
nylon
monofilament
that
both
costs
of
the
fingers
to
bend
and
retract,
so
it's
a
push-pull
mechanism
operates
a
little
bit
differently
and
that's
part
of
what
gives
it
its
strength.
Would
you
mind
taking
that
off
to

If
just
one
moment
I
can

can
show
how
that
one
works,
so
this
Osprey
design,
you
can
see,
has
a
leather
sort
of
cuff
that
goes
around
the
arm,
and
ideally
that's
supposed
to
make
it
more
comfortable
for
the
users
very
comfortable
to
wear
yeah.

That
in
that
leather
will
keep
breaking
in
over
time.
It's
only
been
a
few
weeks,
so
the
more
you
use
this
more
comfortable.
It
should
get
as
it
kind
of
molds
itself
to
you.
So
it's
got
a
leather
piece
that
covers
the
palm
here
as
well
as
a
piece
that
goes
around
the
AR.
It
also
uses
these
velcro
snap,
el
Crowe,
but
straps
with
buckles,
which
are
those
easy
for
you
to
put
on
in
doing
it,
one-handed,
good,
okay,
so
a
couple
of
buckles
to
put
that
on
and
then
we've
put
some
some
rubber.

Name
of
these
I'm
going
to
have
to
look
that
up
and
I'll
include
it
with
the
video,
but
there
are
these
sort
of
rubber.
You
know
grip,
gloves
that
week
off
the
fingers
and
put
on
to
provide
a
better
grip.
So,
as
you
can
see
here,
close-up
this
design
uses
a
thick
nylon
monofilament
and
that's
the
only
set
of
sort
of
tension,
cords
or
tendon
lines
that
are
in
this
design.

Both
of
these
devices
were
made
with
ABS
plastic,
and
the
glossy
surface
is
because
I
treated
them
with
an
acetone
vapor,
so
you
basically
put
the
printed
parts
into
a
container
and
you
heat
up
some
acetone
and
it
creates
a
vapor
that
basically
melts
the
outer
surface,
and
that
gives
it
a
nice
shiny
look,
but
it
also
makes
the
parts
move
more
smoothly.
So
you
don't
have
the
friction,
noise
that
sometimes
associated
with
3d
prints
that
are
done
in
PLA
or
other
materials
that
that
can't
be
treated.
That
way.
So
that's
how
these
were
done.

Fairly
inexpensive
to
make
because
you're
using
a
3d
printer
to
produce
most
of
the
parts
it
takes
about
a
couple
of
days,
I
would
say,
on
average
to
paint
all
of
the
components
for
either
one
of
these
designs
and
then
assembly
time
on
something
like
this.
The
cyborg
Beast
is
roughly
an
hour
and
a
half
I'd
say
on
average
Osprey
takes
a
little
bit
longer
because
you've
got
some
leather
work
to
do.
You've
got
to
cut
the
leather
to
the
right
size.
A
You've
got
to
put
holes
through
it
and
there's
a
lot
of
screws
involved
in
the
assembly
process,
so
it
takes
a
lot
longer.
This
was
also
my
first
time
doing
what
I
would
say
it
took
about
three
hours
to
put
the
osprey
together,
but
I
expect.
If
I
was
to
do
it
more,
you
know
frequently
it
would
certainly
get
easier
and
probably
would
only
take
an
hour
and
a
half
to
two
hours
to
assemble
one
of
those.

An
actual
difference
so,
instead
of
coming
down
like
this
be
able
to
come
in
grab
from
the
side,
I
think
somebody's
done
that
with
one
of
our
other
enable
designs,
I
saw
a
mechanism
that
allows
you
to
sort
of
shift
the
position
of
thumb.
That's
a
great
suggestion.
I'll
have
to
see
if
something
like
that
would
be
possible
for
this
site.
I,
don't
know
the
current
design.
It
would
be
possible,
but
maybe
with
the
modification
of
some
sort,
that's
something
we
could
look
into
goodness.

are
nice
as
a
suggestion.

were

was

that
I
