to

announce

part
in
this
contest
and
I'll
give
a
little
introduction
to
the
contest
in
a
bit.
But
we
talked
about

Think
the
last
we
talked
about
on
the
regular
podcast
was
the

Virginia
Tech
bootcamp,
which
was
was
held
on
January
26th,
and
it
was
made
possible
by
block
one
and
what
that
was
was
is
like
an
all-day
like
six
hour
workshop
at
Virginia
Tech,
that
all
of
the
students
were
invited
to
and
then
at
that
bootcamp
block.

actually
announced
that
they're
going
to
be
doing
a
semester,
long
hackathon,
essentially
for
the
students
with
$25,000
in
prizes
and
all
kinds
of
different
mentorship
and
other
unique
opportunities.
That's
unique
to
Virginia
Tech,
so
I'm,
gonna

and
the
blockchain
boys
is
their
team
name.
They're.
All
juniors
was
a
senior
at
Virginia,
Tech,
they're,
all
computer
science
students.

did

guys
get
involved
with
the
challenge?
How
did
you
find
out
about
block
one?

experience

so,
as
you
know,

Kirk

which

a
very
respected
professor
at
Virginia
Tech
and
he's
the
one
that's
most
associate
with
the
block
one
block
chain
challenge,
and
we
know
that,
if
he's

project,
it

be
a
project,
it's
worth
overtime,
worth
our
studying
and
worth
everything
for
us
to
pursue.

that's
why
we
try
to
learn
it
and
after
we
learned
more
of
it,
it
was
really
exciting.

the

about

in

last
six
months,
I've
been
thrown

this
job

blockchain
initiative.

had
this
great
partnership-

growing
here
with

the

computer

in
a

It's
your
capstone
project
to
graduate
with
your
computer
science
degree

the
class

intro

blockchain.

it

like
usually
they're
having
us
deal

their
typical
operating
system
right,
but
now
they're
talking
about
distributed
systems
and
blocking
is
like
the
biggest
distributed
system
idea.
That's
been
introduced
recently,
you
know
since

internet,

it
ought
to
be
a
good
idea
that
thinking
about
introducing
a
new
course
for
it
to
so.
It's
just
a
big
thing.

For
this
course,
everyone's
competing
in
this
contest,
so
they're,
there's
two
different
I
think
pools
of
contestants.
One
is
the
grad
school
teams
and
then
you
guys
are
on
the
undergrad
team
competition
but
you're
in
a
class
with
what
25
classmates,
where
you're
just
learning
about
blockchain
in
the
class
you
just
mentioned.

Everyone
in
this
classroom
at
Virginia
Tech
is
all
building
something
on
a
US
I/o
like
blockchain
yeah.
So
that
is
something
that
is
just
so
cool
because
there
are
no
other
schools
like
that
I'd
be
surprised
to
see
a
school
that
even
was
building
on
aetherium.
To
be
honest,
usually
it's
just
a
lot
of
theoretical.
A
blockchain
is
what
is
being
taught
in
a
lot
of
other
schools,
so
this
is
just
amazing
that
you
guys
have
this
hands-on
approach.
So
is
this
a
class
you
have
three
days
a
week
or
two
days
a
week.
A
That's
how
I
was
back
when
I
was
in
school,
so
you
have
like
six
hours
a
week
of
class
where
you're
able
to
work
with
your
professor
and
that's
Kirk,
Cameron
and
you're
working
six
hours
a
week
in
class
on
your
EOS
IO
project,
with
the
help
of
your
professor
and
then
you're
also
expected
to
probably
work
on
it
outside
of
class.
And
then
why?
Don't
you
tell
everyone
about
the
unique
mentorship
that
you're
getting
from
block
one
and
talk
about
your
experience
yesterday
or
whenever
that
was
when
you
met
with
them
at
their
office.

every
team
in
capstone
course
is
being
paired
with
two
mentors
two
engineers
from
the
block
one
Blacksburg
office,
which
is
like
five
minutes.
Ten
is
from
our
campus
and
what's
really
amazing
about
it-
is
all
the
engineers
volunteered
to
really
help
us,
because
we
have
no
experience
with
lock,
shame
block
one
yo
si
all
techno
stuff,
so
personally,
I
think
it's
really
generous
of
them
to
you
know,
donate
your
time
to
help
us
and
another.
So
yesterday
we
actually
had
a
snow
day
and
we
have
school
cancelled.
So
we
were
kind
of
worried.

experience
that
you
all
are
getting
now,
especially
being
able
to
go
to
the
block
one
office
and
meet
with
them
and
have
that
mentor
you
and
answer
questions,
there's
an
experience
that
I
think
tons
of
people
watching
right
now
in
terms
of
people

will
watch
us
later
are
gonna,
be
super
super
jealous
about
I'm,
one
of
them
access
to
block
one
and
yeah
absolutely
I'm
one
as
well.
So
that's
awesome
is
this
something
that
you
guys
sort

foresee
continuing
after
this
competition?

first
meeting
that
they
read
like
a
proposal
/white
they
from
there's
a
million
ideas,
but
you
know
things
that
could
work
couldn't
work,
how
we
would
go
about
incorporating
that
with
their
existing
domain,
that
or
a
test
net
I
would
handle
authentication
and
then
the
idea
is
write
them
to
get
good,
even
thinking
about
ready
to
work
with
this
from
the
start.
So
it's
pretty
cool.

of

guys
realize
that

thousands

people

are
eventually
going

or

We
don't

attention

them

project

hands-on

join

computer
science
program

Virginia
Tech,
you
decided
hey,
you
know

want

go
to
this
school.
What
were
some
of
the
things
you
thought
you
were
going
to
build
and

that
changed
now,

from
a
career
perspective
of
what
you
thought
you
were
gonna
do
after
school?
Has
that
changed?
Are
you
starting
to
think
that
might
change
now
that
you're
learning
how
to
build
on
distributed
systems
like
yes,
oh.

Yeah,
because
you
know
most
people
come
to
college
with,
like
VM
yeah
yeah
working
a
nine-to-five
job,
and
you
know
most
people
still
end
up
doing,
but
the
thing
is
getting
to
work
with
blushes,
almost
a
theoretical
concept,
except
for
like
the
actual
implementations
of
platforms.
You
know
like
us
and
stuff
like
that.
So
when
you
get
to
work
with
things
like
that,
you
get
ideas
about
things
you
might
want
to
build
yourself
in
the
future.

think
most
people
go
into
computer
science
wanting
to
even
if
you
do
end
up
working
for
someone
else,
you
want
to
work
on
ideas
that
are
extremely
cool.
You
can't
really
do
that
with
a
lot
of
other
majors.
Writing
in
your
chemical
engineering,
your
mechanical
engineer,
you're,
doing
cool
stuff,
but
you're
not
working
on
groundbreaking
things
that
are
in
the
news
that
changes
everyone's
life
every
second
of
the
day
right
everyone,
absolutely
everyone
from
using
these
distributed
system.

One
of
the
big
reasons
we're
so
far
behind
in
educating
blockchain
development
and
colleges
is
because
who
teaches
the
professors
to
teach
the
students
and
that
that
that
I
think
is
a
big
hurdle.
We're
still
working
to
overcome
and
Virginia
Tech
is
placed
in
a
very
unique
spot.
I
mean
you
said:
blacks
are
the
block.
One
headquarters
is
in
the
Virginia
Tech
corporate
research
center,
which
is
about
ten
minutes
away.

Dan
Larimer
he's
an
alumni
there
and
when
he
was
there,
I
think
I
read
he
tested
out
of
like
three
computer
science
courses
or
three
semesters
worth
of
courses,
because
he
was
already
so
smart
going
into
it
and
and
he's
very
dedicated
to
the
school
I
mean
I
have
friends
who
are
hokey
alumni
and
they're,
absolutely
obsessed
with
it.
So
I
don't
think
it's
something
that
ever
goes
away
whenever
you
leave
and
dan
dan
never
really
left
after
after
graduating
from
there.

of

had
another

the
boot
camp

hackathon
series,

effort

make

success
and
then
this

honestly

continuation

the
global
hackathon
series,

it's
for
a
student
based
group
and

semester
long
with
even
more
incredible
mentorship
than
than
what
we
saw
at
the
actual
hackathons.
So
it's
a
semester,
long
challenge
teams
are
asked
to
do
two
challenges.
I
think
we
already
mentioned
this
stuff.
The
$25,000
in
prizes
teams
are
composed
of
two
to
five
people
undergrad
and
graduate
team.

I

so
registrations.
This
says
February
18th,
but
I
saw
that
Kirk
Cameron
posted
something
that
the
contest
was
extended.
So
that
means
anyone
who

the

to
find
developers

developers

this
is
to

basically
turn

minor-league
system
that
they

work

have

lot

you've
got
to
get
involved
in
this,
you
have
no
idea
how
unique
this
opportunity
is
so
you're
still
able
to

So
here's
the
prompt
of
the
contest
and
that's
what
every
student
was
challenged
to
do
is
to
build
a
cutting-edge
blockchain
application
that
provides
value
to
broader
Virginia,
Tech,
community
of
students,
faculty
staff,
alumni
and
Friends.
So
I
guess
at
this
point
I'll
let
the
students
here
talk
about
their
project
because
you
had
to
fit
within
this
criteria.

know
attendance
to
attends
at
work
or
a
timesheet
verification,
so
attendance
verification
in
the
sense
that
your
attendance
is
once
verified,
is
now
public
and
available
on
the
blockchain.
There's
no
way
you're
messing
with
it,
no
you're
modifying
it.
It
is
a
very
distributed
and
publicly
available
piece
of
information,
and
so
we
wanted
to
take
that
part.
That
power
of
the
block
can
use
that
and
really
incorporate
it
into
our
application.

Whenever
you
I
read
about
your
project,
because
let
me

this
up,
you
guys
were
actually
featured
in
the
local
newspaper
recently
weren't
you
so
that
that's
how
we
actually
came
across
you
guys
we're
already
following
what
was
going
on
with
the
the
challenge
and
everything.
But
you
guys
were
the
first
team
to
announce
yourselves
and
then
I
got
to
read
about
your
project
where
it
basically
says
what
you
mentioned.

that's
awesome,
so
you're,
basically
having
crypto
back
cryptographic,
proof
that
you're
in
class,
because
it
you're
gonna,
have
your
wallet
on
your
cell
phone
and
your
GS
location
data,
basically
prove
that
you
were
where
you're
supposed
to
be,
and
then
that's
posted
to
a
public
blockchain.

awesome!

see
this

applying
to
so
many
things
you
could
apply
it
to
to
grading
where
a
teacher
grades
a
project
and
I'm
just
sort
of
thinking
off

top

head

but
then
they
can't
go
back
and
change

grade

student

like
or,
like
you
know,
in
their
favor
or
against
them.
So
they're
definitely
lot
of
applications
here.

think
your
guys
idea
is
great
and

sort

how
it
develops
throughout

whole

something
called
like
pokey
passport
cash.
That's
basically
our
money
that
we
put
on
our
pokey
passport,
which
is
like
a
credit
card
type
thing
like
Dining
Dollars
or
something

so
they're,
creating
a
QR
code
system
where
people
can
securely
buy
stuff
with
their
pokey
passport.

the
hackathon

You
know
only
one
person,
one
each
of
the
series
and
then
there
was
a
grand
finale
winner.
You
know
as
for
his
that
first-place
prize,

second-place
prize

third
place
prize.
They
were
different,
smaller
Awards
at
each
of
these
hackathons,
and
even
teams
that
didn't
win
any
awards
at
all
are
still
continuing
to
build
their
projects
after
the
fact
so

think
it'll

very
similar
for
you
guys,
whether
you
win
or
not,
I
think.

ideas
that
everybody

working

are
probably
things
that
could
be
taken

modified
in
some
way
and
turned
into
a
real
product.

problem

trying
to
solve
and
how

trying

there

judging
criteria.
It
looks
very
similar

what
the
actual
hackathons
were.

so
the
the
phase
1,
judging
criteria,
that
criteria
that
the
judges
are
going
to
look
at
for
these
projects
when
they're
evaluating
them
similar
to
the
hackathon,
but
the
5
things
that
they're
actually
looking
at
are

bit
different.

number
one
use
of
the
EOS
I/o
technology
are
using
the
blockchain
in
some
kind
of
a
way
that
you
know
you
couldn't
do
this
with
a
centralized
database
or
a
centralized
system.

Impact
on
the
Virginia
Tech
community
makes
sense
it
sort
of
drives
along
with
that,
the
goal
of
doing
something
that
benefits
the
teachers
and
the
faculties.
It's
and
the
staff
and
everybody
everybody
that's
at

University
functionality
roadmap.
Maybe
that's
one
that
you
guys
can
explain
for
us
that
they
give
you
some
indication
of
what
they
were
looking
for
in
that
specific
criteria.

actual
u.s.
hackathons,

creativity.
How
creative
is
your
idea?
Is
this
an
idea
again,
but
you
know
shouldn't
be
on
a
block
training,
that's
creative
enough

utilize
that
technology
in
the
right
way
and
then,
if
you
want
to
scroll
up
stack,
we
can
see
the
fifth
one
as
well
and
then
design
and
usability.

we

this
a
lot,
especially
on
everything
us

which
is
you
know
you
can
build
the
be
most
decentralized
social
media
network
or
the
do
decentralized.
But
if
the
user
experience
sucks
it's
hard
to
use,

there's
friction,
nobody's
gonna
ultimately
use
your
product
just
because
it's
the
centralized
so
having
a
product
that
has
good
user
experience
and
good
UI.
That
feels
kind
of
like
a
centralized
to
have,
but
still
gives
you.

decentralized
app
is
very
cool
to
see
these

spotlights
on
projects

not

money
to
do
a
bunch

marketing,

we
could

with

block
one
themselves,

you

with
