Unknown: I wanted to start off and talk a bit about the journey.

A

That brought us here and why web three matters.

A

A lot of us have been greatly.

A

Our lives have been greatly improved by computing,, it's very difficult to imagine a world without computers nowadays, most.

A

Of our interactions happen over the internet in some way. we are.

A

Merging with our, with our phones, in a sense,, we have all.

A

Kinds of devices, accessing our thoughts, all the time,, our.

A

Brains and our memories are melding with the internet, we can think of things like wikipedia, and so on, as, as part of us., so it was difficult,. It's really difficult for us to imagine operating as humans without competing at all.

A

And so we went through as part of the evolution,. It's an.

A

Evolution of the internet. and it's a shift and improvement.

A

That is coming to, to the network, to bring certain kinds.

A

Of values, and, and properties, to add to the web and to add to the.

A

Internet., so a lot of a lot of the thinking that led to.

A

Building the link offline started off by a reflection on.

A

What computing has done for us., so in the in the last 80 years,.

A

Computing has dramatically transformed humanity,. We have.

A

Come to, to have superpowers beyond the imagination of our.

A

Ancestors,, it's been a tremendously fast transformation.

A

From a sort of pre computing civilization, to what we are now.

A

And and we're sort of in this transitionary phase between being a pre computing civilization to a post computing civilization., here's just a few pictures of scattered around the.

A

Last 80 years.- and you can just imagine how different people's lives were at various different moments here, in this progression., and you can start thinking about the future and.

A

How different your lives will be decade over decade over decade,.

A

As computing continues to increase and grow and become.

A

Part of our species. today, today,. We live in a world where.

A

Billions of humans and trillions of devices cooperate and work.

A

Together, to, to go compete, in a sense,, all kinds of interactions.

A

And operations happen. and we are living in a super deeply.

A

Interconnected world,, where all kinds of transactions, and, and.

A

And moments either happen offline and happiness flows of.

A

Information between us, or have an online, and I suppose, information over computers. and you can think of all of the ways.

A

In which computers over time, they are gaining deeper access.

A

And deeper. they're getting into different privileged positions.

A

In, in our, in our interactions. most of human activity tends to.

A

Be assisted by computers, now, and the internet is constantly granting us new superpowers.. So we live in this fantastic,.

A

Amazing world, where the internet has become this,. This amazing.

A

Superpower, granting machine, where you get new superpowers.

A

Delivered to you, through your phone, or through your computer, in the form of an app or a web page. and as an individual,, you.

A

Can acquire all of these new amazing superpowers that are.

A

Being created all the time. and you can gain the ability to.

A

Speak to people around the planet, you can broadcast to thousands of people,. You can write in share documents,. You.

A

Can watch videos,, you can create videos and broadcast those,. You.

A

Can assemble the world's best encyclopedia and continue to.

A

Update., you can model all kinds of difficult scientific problems.

A

And and work with them with other people., it's really.

A

Tremendous what we've been able to achieve. and the most special.

A

Thing of this entire system is that it's actually quite easy to.

A

Grant other people superpowers,- all you have to do- is to think.

A

Of, of how your superpower power will take form. and in in the.

A

Shape of an application, or, or webpage,, and to program that.

A

Application or webpage and to deploy it to the internet. and.

A

If you are a group of people with, you managed to do.

A

That,, you can now grant a superpower to the rest of humanity., and so that's that's like the extremely special thing about the internet.. It's that level of ease of superpower granting.

A

Now, there's a bit of a difficult piece here,, which is.

A

That the current architecture of the web and the current architecture of the internet has all kinds of flaws and problems with how the information for those super powers is stored and.

A

Distributed. there's all kinds of flaws and and problems with.

A

Who has access to that information.? Who, who might.

A

Delete that information,, who might be able to change that.

A

Information without you, knowing and so on, who might prevent you to access really vital and valuable information.. So there's all kinds of important rights that come in when you think about information. now,. This is bout to get dramatically. Harder.

A

We're building new kinds of interfaces to computing, things.

A

Like artificial things, like augmented reality and virtual.

A

Reality. and now brain machine interfaces and so on. and this.

A

Is setting aside all the ai level kind of improvements. so.

A

The next decades in computing are going to be truly, as.

A

Transformative as the last few decades, and perhaps more,, we might consider them to be more transformative.. So when we sit.

A

Here, and we and we, in 2020,, we look back at the 80 year. History.

A

That brought us here, and we try to sort of project where we're going to be in another 80 years,. It becomes extremely difficult.

A

To know when, and how these different pieces of technology are going to land.. But what becomes very clear is that the.

A

Properties that those technologies should have, and.

A

The properties of the information that those technologies should have better be having our best interests in.

A

The core,- and we really should be fixing the kinds of problems.

A

That exist today. so that when these vastly more powerful forms.

A

Of computing arrive,, we actually have, we're actually able to.

A

Count with with them and not be exposed to all kinds of.

A

Vulnerabilities because of them., so this is where web three comes.

A

In., so web three is a kind of the latest iteration of the web.

A

And as a system of it's a group of techniques and applications.

A

And assurance systems that bring verifiability to the web. so by.

A

Adding with a whole bunch of cryptographic, techniques, and game, theory,, techniques, and so on, we've been able to introduce verifiability, to all kinds of interactions and transactions.

A

That were previously not verifiable,, where you really needed to trust.. The individuals are the groups of people behind.

A

Behind the transaction, or, or running a transaction. so being.

A

Able to trust, math and trusted pressing cryptography instead of people is what enables us to build systems that we can rely.

A

On in the long term, that aren't going to break in some terrible.

A

Way underneath us., it's worth it, a number of values.

A

Associated with it,, there are things like free, speech, or freedom of assembly, being able to securely communicate around the world, being able to control data, and have self sovereign.

A

Data, and be able to have the ability to transact together,.

A

Being able to have secure money, and, and so on. being able to.

A

Have being able to work without relying on some kind of central.

A

Control operator and things like that. there's a lot of different.

A

Versions of these webster values,- this is just my take on them.. A lot of other people have have different views., but but.

A

The some of the core things are common,, which is that we really.

A

Need to establish a secure communications infrastructure.

A

Around the planet. and one of the great things about this.

A

Whole web three world is that we created this ability to.

A

Incentivize, the distribution of computing resources using.

A

Cryptocurrency. and so that's, of course,, at the heart of hot coin, at the heart of bitcoin and aetherium., and so many of the innovations of web three. and so together,. Things like the.

A

Decentralized web innovations, blockchain systems and linked.

A

Data form this this sort of web three,, oriented system. and so.

A

That brings me to filecoin,, which is a project to create a.

A

Decentralized,, efficient and robust foundation for humanity's.

A

Information., that's an apple, and it's also an extremely difficult mission,. It'll. Take us a long time to really achieve us., but today,. We stand on on a.

A

Fantastic milestone,, where we can now look back and see the launch of chocolate in the beginning of our work behind us. and we can look ahead, and we can think of the growth of.

A

The network and, and the utility and the usage of the network.

A

That's the challenge: ahead.

A

felisa is a large scale. System,, it's a, a,, like many layer, one.

A

Blockchains., it's a highly complex system that combines a.

A

Blockchain with a distributed network system with all kinds of.

A

Peer to peer networking,, in order to create an open service where various different groups of people can come together and.

A

Provide a system,, it provides service to the broader world.

A

Together. and so there's all kinds of complex subsystems and.

A

Pieces that add up to what what blockchain is. and we really are.

A

In a fantastic moment where we're following his life. and.

A

That's a,. You know, phenomenal moment to be able to look at the.

A

Network and see this is a snapshot of the status of.

A

Network, we are at the very top. You can see the consensus,, the.

A

Blocks in the consensus., you can see: there's 602 a bytes of.

A

Storage,, which is a truly gargantuan amount of storage.

A

And you can see a whole bunch of other stats.. You can also.

A

Explore a whole bunch of you can look at many different print.

A

Checks, first. and you can see there a different view of the.

A

Same data on the same network and so on,, you can see all kinds.

A

Of stats about about the network. and you can see the actual blocks coming in, and transactions flowing and so on.

A

So a lot easier to build a blockchain., and so it's really great to be in a world where we now have a publicly deployed.

A

Network. and, and it's working.- it's also starting to accumulate.

A

A number of interesting datasets, we have the slingshot.

A

Competition in order to gather a whole bunch of valuable datasets.

A

And add them to the network. and that's ongoing. and perhaps the.

A

You know, a,. I want to give a huge thanks, and, and kudos to.

A

All of the chocolate miners who have been building out the the.

A

Capacity of chocolate, network, building out a whole bunch of.

A

Storage facilities around around the world. and putting putting a.

A

Lot of those a lot of that hardware together to to provide this, this service. and here's a snapshot of a lot of the.

A

Organizations involved with that. also,. I want to thank a.

A

Lot of the communities that have gathered and built out the.

A

Broader falcon falcon community over over the last few years,, it's been fantastic to be working on a project with so.

A

Many people involved and interested in in using it and.

A

Interested in in success., so thank you so much for to all of.

A

The people around the world that have been building communities.

A

And working with other folks and and spreading the word about.

A

About blockchain and the technology and how it can be used, and so on.

A

And also a huge thanks to.

A

All of the developers and and groups who have been working on.

A

Various different parts of the parts of the network, there's a lot of different groups that are developing software to, to work.

A

With often in one way or another,, whether it's tooling or services, or, or other kinds of other kinds of systems.- and this is a really phenomenal ecosystem.

A

Of developers that that are working all around around.

A

Kotlin. you'll hear more about this in the next talk. and I.

A

Want to give a special shout out to all of the all the developers and hackers who've been building applications on parkland,. Here's.

A

A snapshot of all of the eath global, or a lot of the eath.

A

Global hacks that happen, I think, a month and a half ago or.

A

So,, I look forward to the next next hackathon that we might do.

A

And I would love to see a whole new wave of these kinds of.

A

Applications., I'm really excited and proud to point out that a.

A

Number of these, these folks went on to to build out their, their.

A

Application for for real, and for the long term, they have.

A

Progressed from being kind of hackathon, hacks and so on to to.

A

Now being services that people plan to run long, term., so good.

A

Luck to all those folks.- and this is a great moment to to.

A

Now, turn to the all of the applications that I've been.

A

Building in ipfs. for for the last few years, and remark that.

A

Now now that poplin is live today, we can go to a lot of.

A

These applications. and we can take the the the hashes that.

A

Represent those datasets, or those web front, ends, and so on,.

A

Or those different kinds of applications., and we can now.

A

Backup, all of that data onto powerpoint. and so falcon can.

A

Become a way to to, to back up and distribute the data for for all these.

A

Applications. and so the one so the next phase of the network is.

A

To go and do that to go and bring a lot of these.

A

Applications over to over to mr. coin.

A

I'm also extremely proud to to,.

A

To have incredibly talented group of designers and product people.

A

And product builders in the falco network., this is just one.

A

One of the applications that's being built out around laquinta., it's called slate. and you can see just the beautiful design around it.. It's a it's a really phenomenal product. and what I.

A

Loved about slate is just that, when you use it,, you can't tell.

A

That it's a web three application. and that I think is- is the bar that we have to hit the entire space,. The entire web.

A

Free space right now, mostly works for finance, oriented.

A

Applications, or for applications where developers are willing to go through and jump through, all kinds of hoops.

A

To achieve certain kinds of things that are really powerful but but very hard to use., and so the the web three has not.

A

Crossed the chasm to the to the broader world in terms of consumer applications, and its applications like slate, that.

A

That can pave the road and it can show us how it's done. and.

A

Can really get webserie to cross the chasm. so calling from.

A

Camille here soon, I really would like to, to be at a point where.

A

When she has a chasm, we'll see when, when exactly that, happens.

A

But I really look forward to just late as being one of the leaders in the in that in the charge., and I encourage all of.

A

The other developers in the web space that are hearing this or participating in powerpoint to get together and talk about.

A

Product and talk about design and talk about getting to that super high quality level of product that is required in.

A

Order for most people in the world to use use the system. so.

A

The the challenge ahead for us is to now that we have built out.

A

A large amount of capacity in the network is to turn toward.

A

The applications and start adding a lot of a lot of.

A

Valuable useful data and making this market work. so thanks to.

A

The block reward,, we have not had to build out this market and.

A

In kind of,, at the same time and kind of growing the market in.

A

Both sides,, we have been able to just focus on one side, the.

A

Capacity side and just grow that out for for quite a while., but.

A

Now, it's time that we we turn our attention to growing the demand side of the of the market., and so that's where the.

A

The whole network, and there are different connections and and,.

A

And relationships., so all kinds of applications will come in come in handy.. Definitely, miners want a lot of useful, valuable.

A

Storage from from all these folks. definitely a lot of these applications want to backup their, their data and their.

A

Their,, their applications with low cost and in a resilient way.

A

And hopefully in a crypto native way., and so this is a perfect.

A

This is the stage is set for the for this to happen., and so this.

A

Will be the coming months.? I'm also want to remind everyone to.

A

Kind of think about the whole economic structure of hochland.

A

Into into remember that filecoin is a large group of people that.

A

Succeed together or fail together,, though, there's a lot of internal competition in the system. and that's a key part of.

A

The of any kind of blockchain and open service system. at the.

A

End of the day, together,, the network provides the service to.

A

To the outside world. and you can think of that, as a whole,.

A

Integrated economy. that together is providing that larger scale, service. and really thinking about, like the.

A

Different different stages, of, of optimization for the network,.

A

We're very much a stage one where we're building capacity,.

A

We're optimizing a lot of the flows of the product,, we're getting to,. We have basic, retrieval and so on,, but we.

A

Don't yet have very efficient, retrieval and so on. and we have.

A

A lot of different qualities. and over time,, the network has.

A

To improve and in order to get to a an extremely high quality,.

A

High quality of service. so of course,, this is a long road, no,.

A

No large scale system has ever been built in a short time,. The.

A

Cloud of today took on the order of 1015 years to to build out.

A

Into its full scale,, we can catch up and we can try to catch.

A

Up really quickly. certainly,, we amassed in a very short time,. It.

A

Truly staggering amount of storage data than many, many.

A

People would have never guessed would have appeared., but that.

A

Said,, getting to an extremely high quality product will will take a while and getting to an excellent quality of service, for the users will take a while.. So the big thing here, is, as.

A

Participants in the coin network, whether you're a.

A

Developer or a miner, or, or, or a client,, it's really all about.

A

The user experience of the client.

A

the service is trying to pop in a service is trying to sell.

A

Storage to clients, and clients will choose whatever is best for.

A

Them, and will choose with with with their wallets., and so if.

A

Viacoin is not worth their time and worth their money,, and so on,, then talking in the long term will not succeed.. So as a.

A

Group, as a whole network,, I encourage you to try your best.

A

To provide an excellent quality of service. and if you do,, you'll you'll, the incentive structures of the system will.

A

Will grant you a higher reward than than other folks.? I want to.

A

Give you three challenges and three pieces of advice: today.

A

Challenge number one is that I challenge you to bring deeply valuable data to the network., so this is the next stage in development for for.

A

Rocklin., I challenge all of you to seek valuable datasets, that.

A

One could or should back up.. I challenge you to seek clients.

A

Who would be great customers for the network and recruit them to.

A

The network, by telling them by following telling them about technology and encourage them to try it out. and to kind of seed.

A

The cv ideas. I'll, walk you through a few different slides.

A

That I showed up a slingshot opening., so there's all kinds of.

A

Open access in our scientific data that you could encourage.

A

There's all kinds of open access and interview papers that have, you know, extremely valuable, that are truly valuable.

A

Resources. there's all kinds of music systems, by the way, of.

A

Course, do all of us with proper licensing and proper structure.

A

Audience is a an amazing candidate to start with,. They already use ipfs,. They could be using potcoin. right, away.. Think.

A

Of other other bodies of work that that have open access, music. think about web three application data that right now.

A

Is using aetherium and ipfs. and perhaps aws as a back end,, but.

A

Not really should be switching to switching the talk, when I.

A

Think of the ip has applications as a whole and going to thinking.

A

Of which ones to use,, or which ones you like, that you might want to bring over to, to powerpoint, or, if you're, a developer of one of those, consider,. Consider doing that yourself.. Think of the large collections of archives that are.

A

Out there,, there's all kinds of really valuable and useful, useful data. think of also have developer assets,. It turns out.

A

That if a system starts optimizing for developers,, you.

A

Enter a an extremely fast feedback loop. and you managed.

A

To build something, that's extremely useful to many other kinds of kinds of groups of developers in many other industries., so perhaps by bringing in vms, or containers,.

A

And so on to department, you might, you might be.

A

Really perfecting the flow of a product.

A

Think of other kinds of things like video,, think of d tube and.

A

Other other resources that have open access, video and so on that.

A

A, that might be good, that's or go and convince a business that.

A

That distributes video that perhaps they should be storing their data, data. With,, like when I think of games, games at the end of the day, are a huge part.

A

Of computing and a huge part of what got so many people into into computers, and, and the internet. and lots of these.

A

Games are either fully open source or are.

A

Having a racking up very large bills in storing and distributing data.

A

So they are great, great targets to be to be customers of the.

A

Pacco network., you can also think of building game asset.

A

Libraries, where, if a lot of the data is now on, on ipfs and.

A

Bakwin, then incremental games that might refer to that. Those.

A

Same assets would then share the data storage., and you would get.

A

This amazing kind of economy of scale that happens with with.

A

These kinds of shared libraries of resources. there's a whole.

A

Line oh, thinking around operating systems like going around, being able to have different applications sharing.

A

Data sources, sharing ranges of data., and this is a great example of something that you might do. and perhaps think.

A

About virtual world data., so things like decentraland, and.

A

Crypto,, voxels, and so on,. Those are great systems that.

A

We should be getting get into..

A

You should also consider bringing the world of nf t's department.. So all of these resources need to persist for.

A

The long term, they need to be able to be backed up, verifiably.

A

And long term and need to be served quickly and so on. so nf.

A

Ts are a great, a big part of the whole crypto economy. That's.

A

Emerging, and they present a really good use, case. and you.

A

Should also consider just going to the other blockchains and.

A

Saying hey, look, we have this massive amount of capacity.. So why don't we just back up the other blockchains on filecoin.

A

So I think it would be a phenomenal result if we can take things like bitcoin, aetherium and really all the block chains.

A

And just back up all of their data in caughlin., so imagine,.

A

You know what kind of a a what kind of a lego block that would.

A

Get in the in the ecosystem, if everybody using other.

A

Blockchains was downloading, there was downloading their.

A

Blockchain from from franklin. then also think about open.

A

Access photo archives. at the end of the day, photos are one of the biggest things that humans end up doing. taking.

A

Photos and looking at photos. there are these massive massive.

A

Archives of both open access photos or or our business photos.

A

That are that various corporations would like to like to start cheaply to go up, go and pursue potentially these.

A

Alright,, that's it,, um, challenge number one.. So now.

A

Channel number two, challenge number two,. I challenge you to.

A

Build a new application on popcorn talk., so this is for all.

A

The developers out there or people that would like to be.

A

Like to try be developing., we have a whole suite and range of.

A

Amazing developer tools, the folks from from textile and.

A

Fleek and a number of other other groups have been working.

A

To perfect a lot of the applications and or the suite of.

A

Applications around developing tech, we're talking. and now.

A

It's really a phenomenal time to to build a web three web application.. So if you want to help web three, cross, the chasm,.

A

Consider building something like slate,, consider, building a consumer, product, or a developer tool, or something like that, and.

A

Build an application that uses uses hochland.. So that's my.

A

Challenge number two for you. and challenge number three, is.

A

To make filecoin yours. so at the end of the day,, all.

A

Blockchains for them to truly succeed in a public environment.

A

They must be systems that, where the community feels a very.

A

Strong sense of ownership. and today,, we have a lot of a lot of.

A

Groups that that feel a very strong sense of ownership, overpopulate. now, we have the hundred plus developer.

A

Organizations around around the ecosystem,, we have the hundreds.

A

Of minor organizations,, we have really thousands of people that.

A

Have been interacting together around this network,, and this.

A

Network is yours., but now today, we probably have another thought.

A

Many thousands, or potentially 10s of thousands of people that.

A

Are interacting with talk when in some way. so really get.

A

Involved. think of ways where you can either contribute to the.

A

Code or contribute to the discussions, and really treat.

A

Falcon as your network., because it is at the end of the day,.

A

Falcon is a public blockchain now,, it is the internet's. It is everybody's.. So now, you're, really using your your ownership.

A

Comes with some sets of responsibilities and so on to the community, and really engage in this,. Think of ways to become.

A

A leader in the project, think of ways to participate in maybe.

A

Five improvement: proposals,, if you have great ideas,, think of.

A

Ways to, to move us forward to create ideas or to generate some.

A

New new directions., and if you would like to kind of paint a.

A

Vision of how various leaders in the network could could make.

A

Poplin theirs. on friday, we'll have like a track of, of short.

A

Talks that people can give, where they can paint a vision for what they think conklin should be in the long term.. So I.

A

Really encourage you to make hofmann yours and in in whatever.

A

Way you you want. and to really engage with this community. in.

A

Whatever way you you find best. so,, you know,, I'm extremely.

A

Proud to to be in this in this point in this day, after,, you.

A

Know, in this in this milestone in this new beginning, after.

A

Many, many years of work,, but now looking ahead to the next stages,, and I couldn't be prouder to be sharing that with.

A

Just such an amazing group of people that have come together to build this., so this is,, you know,, like all the people that.

A

Have worked in falcon,, I've done so with a lot of effort and care.

A

And love. and we're giving it to you now.. So if you weren't part.

A

Of falcon before,, now you are,, if you weren't, making it before,.

A

Now, bring it to bring it to more people.

A

Great., so that's it for for my challenges.! So now I have some.

A

Advice for you., so number one, is to build something people.

A

Want., so this is perhaps the most important lesson that I learned at yc. and that I learned about building products,.

A

The thing you make has to be something that people want, you.

A

Might build something that you want, or you might build something that a small group of people want.. But when you find.

A

Something that is extremely good, and that people like using, and they like, building on and so on, then magic happens at.

A

That point,, that product is going to grow and be adopted by.

A

By a lot of people., if you go and build out a product, and so.

A

On and people aren't really liking it that much and not wanting it that much, it'll likely fail. so for everybody.

A

Building tools or systems run filecoin. and for the people.

A

Actually, building and contributing to caughlin implementations or the protocol, and so on, really focus on.

A

Building something people want, make sure that the thing that you're making is something that people will want to use will.

A

Want to pay for,, we want to develop on and so on. The details.

A

Matter,, the the user experience matters, a lot., so really focus.

A

On building something people want., the second piece of advice.

A

That I want to give you is to think long. Term,, I think, is here.

A

For the long term,, not for the short term., it's already you know,, I've been in some form or another in this journey.. I've.

A

Been here working towards this for six years,, many other people.

A

Have been working on this and you know, 123 years. and when.

A

You think about the mission in it's a very long term. Mission,.

A

We're not going to achieve that in a short time. and when you think about data storage and data source and service,, what clients want is long term reliability.. They want their data to be there six months from now, a year from now, five years.

A

From now., if you think of all of the photos of your of the new.

A

Take with your family or,, although your important documents, you don't want them to be around for a day or two,, you want them to be around for months and years.. So the whole.

A

Took many years to get somewhere, but in that period,.

Many people laughed those systems out of out of the room,.

In a sense, bitcoin at the beginning was was treated like.

Ridiculous thing, and nobody really, or very few people really want to use it. everyone kind of laughed at the, at the system and the structure and whatnot.. So it wasn't going to be a super successful thing. If people weren't thinking long.

Term. and you know,, the same thing happened for a theorem.. If.

You're almost laughed out of rooms as a just a science project for many, many years,. I remember going to talk to people.

In very high places about how important and valuable, if you're, a mouse, and how interesting of a network it was. and they were.

Just sort of disregarding it. nowadays, those same people are.

Strong participants. and if you're in an economy, and these.

Kinds of things take time, and some cases take many years. and.

At the end of the day that they develop and blossom, thanks to their communities over many years. and you know, kind of if.

I know that a lot of people come into the blockchain networks,.

Because hey, there's money to be made. and there's kind of like a short term payout perspective. and,, you know, a lot of those.

People right now are having a really hard time with talk one, because one is not designed for them. and and they're having a hard time thinking about economics at that point, and it doesn't feel right and so on.. And it's really because swap one is not designed for for short term for short term thinking or.

Short term value output. one is designed for long term funds.

Designed for long term, data storage and data storage, services., and so the people that are going to succeed, the most without going, are people that are able to really think of that long.

Term and really able to commit to the network and commit to provide those services commit to to actually be a good.

Being a leader in those moments and helping the community move forward in whatever way that turns out to be. and,, you know,.
