Year after year, we sadly witness the disappearance of approximately nine indigenous languages, erasing unique worldviews and cultural treasures. GitHub, in collaboration with Google.org, has joined forces with Comunidades Indígenas en Liderazgo (CIELO), an Indigenous women-led nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering Indigenous communities in Los Angeles.

This partnership brought to life an interactive game, carefully crafted to serve as both an educational tool and a means of preserving an endangered indigenous language. This initiative embodies the dedication to rectifying historical injustices and providing reparation by nurturing and safeguarding the Zapotec language.

GitHub Meetup Africa brings together developers from all over the continent to learn about game development, documentation, and tooling. Hear from experts in the field on how they use GitHub to build better software.

Speaker: Victor Ikechukwu
https://twitter.com/victor_codejs

Victor is a frontend developer and technical writer interested in the JAMStack, and has a knack for breaking down developer concepts to understandable bits for others.

Title: Docs vs Tooling
The Best Approach To Enable Developers to Effectively Use Your (Frontend) Code External documentation is great in supporting developers using our code, but it’s not always enough and doesn't provide an immediate guidance to the developers using the code. Enter Tooling. Tooling refers to the development tools/processes that make our code more maintainable and useable for others. In this talk, I'd elaborate on docs, tooling, and how/why frontend developers can integrate both docs and tooling to enable other developers and themselves to effectively use their code.

Speaker: Cliff Gor
https://twitter.com/gor_clifford
Strategic and creative thinker, with the ability to articulate and present
technical matters to all audiences.

Please join us on for an evening of networking, exciting announcements and all the exclusive GitHub news. This month we are focused on Maintainers! Maintainer Month is an opportunity for maintainers to gather and share knowledge and experiences. It’s a time to see how other projects are tackling similar problems. And it’s a time to reflect collectively that the challenges faced aren’t all technical, and the burden on maintainers can come with a lack of boundaries, vacations, or emotional support. Whether you’re celebrating contributions to open source, or reflecting on the particular pains of this line of labor, this is a month to come together.

Hosted by GitHub’s own Martins Ewere and Community co-host and GitHub Star Ruth Ikegah.

Event Program:
- GitHub News with Martins and Ruth 📺

- Speaker: Marlene Mhangami
https://twitter.com/marlene_zw

Topic: Maintaining an Open Source Project
Marlene is a Zimbabwean software engineer, explorer, and speaker based in the city of Harare. She is a director and vice-chair for the Python Software Foundation and is currently working as a Developer Advocate at Voltron Data. In 2017, she co-founded ZimboPy, a non-profit organization that gives Zimbabwean young women access to resources in the field of technology. She is also the previous chair of PyCon Africa and is an advocate for women in tech on the continent.

Be broad enough: Progress through volunteerism

"Welcome to OctogatosConf 20. Keynote speaker Mica shares "Opportunities to lead are rarely announced with confetti. Often they depend on the expectations of your workplace or role. But can we think about opportunities more broadly?" Through the lens of a personal story, learn how community work and volunteering can galvanize your career and leadership goals.

Note: Mica's talk began with an acknowledgment of indigenous lands, and due to technical issues was not recorded. We regret this abbreviation of the speaker's full talk.
