Calling all open source maintainers! Your communities have thrived with issues and pull requests. But sometimes you’ve had to get creative with how to engage with each other beyond code. With this session, we’ll explore GitHub Discussions and how the tool can enable you to connect with contributors on new ideas, help others without inflating your issue count, and recognize non-code contributions. We’ll give you an insider’s look at the beta, share learnings from maintainers at Vercel, Gatsby, Node,js, and others who have been testing out GitHub Discussions, and showcase the possibilities of what you can do to energize your community. We’ll even slip in a sneak peek for what’s to come!

Earlier this year, GitHub acquired npm Inc., and since then we have been heads down on improving it and supporting the world’s largest development community, JavaScript. We’ve polished the services you’ve come to know and trust, released version 7 of the npm CLI, and we could not have done it without your involvement. Let’s recap what we’ve done this year and what the JavaScript community has to look forward to in 2021 and beyond.

Presented by
Mala Kumar, Senior Program Manager, Tech for Social Good, GitHub
Bassem Dghaidi, Solution Architect, GitHub
Sara Hollis, Epidemiologist, World Health Organization
Dušan Milovanović, Lead Architect, World Health Organization
This panel will focus on the World Health Organization (WHO) and how technology can be used to improve public health. We'll discuss everything from Go.Data, a digital solution for contact tracing, to EIOS, a system that uses publicly available information to support early warning and response to public health threats. We'll also cover role of open source collaboration in WHO's early warning and response initiatives. Audience members will walk away with knowledge about how to engage with major public health organizations—including WHO, the Epidemic Intelligence from Open Sources (EIOS) community of practice, and the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN)—to help early detection, verification, and risk assessment of disease outbreaks to prevent pandemics.

Presented by Kath Korevec, Senior Director, Product, GitHub
Just like code, docs shouldn't be static. They need to evolve and respond to the changes in the developer world every day. That's why we believe that GitHub Docs are better when they're used in the open—with the people who are building the features and those who are using them all participating in tandem. In this talk, you'll hear about why and how we took our docs public, and the lessons we learned along the way.

Evan You, Project Lead, Vue.js
Gina Häußge, Project Lead, OctoPrint
Wes McKinney, Director, Ursa Labs
Sasha Rosenbaum, Senior Product Manager, GitHub
Most technologies built today rely on the work of open-source maintainers. In addition to building highly-valued open source projects, maintainers put in long hours to build software, fix issues, field questions, and manage communities—all while figuring out monetization strategies to sustain their technologies. In this session, you’ll hear from three leaders whose meaningful contributions to the open source ecosystem have become full-time careers. We’ll dive into their lessons learned, discuss the burnout maintainers often face, and share how other developers can prevent and overcome those challenges, solve for monetization challenges, and build healthy, sustainable habits in open source.

Presented by
Erik Duveblad, Principal Member of Technical Staff, Oracle
Robin Westberg, Consulting Member of Technical Staff, Oracle
Erik and Robin are the two developers who wrote over 50,000 lines of Java to enable the transition of OpenJDK—which is relied upon by millions of developers around the world—to Git and GitHub. This session will cover the challenges they discovered over the two-year migration, as they transitioned an established open source community from using a self-hosted Mercurial server to using Git and GitHub. You'll learn how Erik and Robin converted over 65,000 Mercurial commits to Git, created GitHub apps to customize contribution workflow, and how they scaled pull requests to work well for an open source project with over 250 active contributors.
