From YouTube: GitHub Game Off Submission Stream for Open Source Friday #1

Description

GitHub Game Off is an annual game jam where developers submit games based on a theme. The game can be created in any language on any platform. The theme for 2020 was "Moonshot": https://itch.io/jam/game-off-2020

Hello, hello, everyone: how is everyone going today welcome to the github open source friday game of livestream edition? How are you all welcome in to those who've already joined us? We've got techyvan here, hello, you're, ready to see some cool games, and you totally need this afternoon exhausting week. Super good to hear uh mr richard hellos.

Welcome to you, I'm glad you're, good, hey rhythming! Oh you, like that background yeah. This is actually fun. Fact. This background is um some of the graphics we actually ended up using for the github game off this year, um which is really cool.

um I don't think they were originally created for the game off, but then, um once we announced the um the game of theme, it sort of just worked really nicely with um what we have the theme issues like we'll use. It um you'll see when I put the website up that my I've changed like some of the colors and stuff on it, but yeah it's really cool um but yeah. I'm super excited to play some of these um games today. So the way the stream is gonna work today is we're.

Gonna go through some of our staff top picks. uh Now each game isn't necessarily the winner um or anything, um but I will tell you which ones one like different categories or whatever and I'll talk a little bit about how the submissions and things work as well. I'm gonna go through the games and then at the end of the stream, we're gonna try something new. So for those of us who've been on open source friday before um you. This is something new for you all. So it's gonna be really exciting.

So after we're done here we're going to jump over to the community forums where you can kind of continue the conversation with either myself or other people who you met on the stream or people who maybe didn't get to come to the stream and have those conversations. So that's gonna be fun. I'm quite excited about that. um But let's talk about the github game off for those of you who haven't seen it before. uh So this is the github game off page for 122.

how exciting so um you'll see. This is a very similar background, which I think it's hilarious. um So the theme for this year's game off was moonshot, which is why using these um graphics made it really cool because it was like. Oh look we're going to the moon. So a lot of moonshot ideas of this used game.

Oh hey, whoa! What the heck lee riley got on band, what that's not cool!

um Let me actually try really quickly lee riley to make you a moderator, so everyone say hi to lee. um So lee is the guy who runs github game off so say hi to him. I'm gonna see if I can make you a moderator quickly.

Okay, I will just share messages on your behalf. Lee feel free to um we'll get you sorted, so you have mod status. I don't know why you don't already, um but lee feel free to um write the same thing and then um like without the link. The reason why it's not working is because we we disabled links because lots of random people like to put random links in the stream, but um that's what lee said. Some amazing artists for the last three game offs, so we're gonna go check. Let's go check out that work.

Oh wow they've got some really cool stuff, um so these are uh some of our artists, uh one of our artists, so lee feel free to say hi whatever um and then, if you want to say your message and then put the urls as separate, then I'll copy and paste it again that that'll work um they've done some really cool graphics, actually, um the guys from all the artists who yeah they're really cool. I like this kind of well, it's like almost like watercolor.

um This is quite cool, um so, like they've done some really cool stuff so that that's them there um and yeah. It's really cool. So here's our the cockpit from the moon shop yeah there we go so um we also use this one as well, um see, there's a whole lot of stuff that we we use there um we're gonna go over. This highlights right at the end of the stream. um Here we go wow awesome, stuff yeah. So this is the um what we're showing off at the moment.

That is some really cool stuff, like yeah, really cool anyway go check them out. um Yeah they're cool. They do lots of other really cool stuff. So, as you can see, they did.

Here too, which is cool, so thank you lee for being uh for doing so much work on the game off and putting it all together. So we're gonna go over the highlights real at the end.

I don't want to spoil any of the games that we're going to be talking about um so fun fact on all the games I haven't played any of them until today, um when I say today I mean I haven't- played any of them, we're about to play them for the first time and the reason why I didn't want to play them to start off with or to like, have a preview so to show you how easy quick, complicated like they are to play from first stand.

It's a good question from taking me out of just how they're made so I'm going to go through each one. Lee has given me some really really cool insights on each game, um so the game off is an open gaming jam. You can create any type of game any type of engine.

um Obviously the theme is moonshot, but you can kind of take that. However, you want so unlike js 13k games that we showed off recently, which is this one here which I uh 7k games. This is specifically oh. No, what happened lee? I got a message saying: oh you got time now sorry, I'm banned.

I have to keep like unbanning you. I don't yeah, we um not on my streams but on some of the github streams. We've had some people like trying to like just spam links, so I think they ended up banning one there we go. I just stopped banning me, I'm not banning you. It's like auto banned, I'm sorry, okay! So I'm like just 13k games, which is you have to build a game in javascript, it has to be 13 kilobytes or less. That's.

Not what game off is game off is much more um open and fluid submissions, which is why we get so many. So we had it says here: 499 submissions, but the actual final count was just over 500, so we had just over 500 submissions which was really exciting for um for this year's game or last year's game of 2020 holy we're in 2021 what the heck uh okay. So this is this year's games super fun and again the theme is moonshot, but you can build them in anything.

So if we have a look here, like lee's, had put together all this cool stuff, which is like some tips to people who have never gone into game development as well, so you can see here like some of the tips that leigh had mentioned was like you know.

If you're like into javascript, try fraser um phaser, sorry, not fraser phaser, I think I said uh if you're into c, plus, plus or c sharp. Obviously, unity is a really good one unreal engine as you want a godot's, a really good one: hey starshade. How are you welcome into the game of stream super exciting and super fun? um Obviously, we've got pie game. Python. um Godot is another good one for python.

um Actually, I'm gonna zoom in here too, because sometimes I realize that on stream it looks really tiny uh lots of different things. Like pikro, pixel um basic there's, lots of different ways. You can build games, so basically anyone could submit any kind of game they want.

uh Apart aside from the fact that the theme is moonshot, there's no other real restrictions, um you obviously have to put the game on github um yeah and then um so each of the games that we go into, uh we will have a look at their githubs as well, um but yeah. All the games are available on github and then um they're hosted. Each game itself is hosted on this um itch.io platform, which is a really good platform. If you want to host any kind of game jams, community sessions, things like that, github has twitch.

Oh damn yeah we're. Here we got twitch, hey eclipse, son. How are you or eclipsing sun? Sorry, I've got cpu001. Do you have the first cpu in existence? Is that why you're doubling one um and uh meg's just saying? Oh, this is really interesting, so really cool. So a bit high fever here is still in melbourne.

It's like my nose is all itchy how's it going yeah. We also have myspace wait. We actually have it all get up myspace. Is that a thing? Oh, my gosh. I'm like keen to see this now. Oh my gosh. We do too uh well. This is like this is my space on github, um but yeah. Look.

Okay, this is what I this is not maybe what I don't like, but something that I always like get like. Okay. So whenever I look for something I'm like okay, I want to find something: um that's github. So, for example, I want to find github's facebook page you type in github. Facebook first thing that always come up is facebook's repository on github you're, like I just want to find the github page. It's like yeah. It's like first line of problems.

My space don't go upstairs get up. We actually have a my facebook account. This is hilarious.

Oh, my gosh. We do too. This is like what is that, like one people connected to that, keeps asking for stories, there's like nothing here. We also have github stories like walls. Okay, there you go fun fact. Github has a myspace account. I didn't even know hilarious. Okay, one thing before we um get back onto the game or stream, um something that lots of people don't know. We also have is um a store, so we actually have a swag store.

um There. You go most people, don't know we have a store. So again, whenever I look up github shopify, it takes me to the shopify repo on github um yeah, so it's like, ah but yeah. We actually have a shop, which is where you can get like cool swag like this. Okay, back to the game off, so the game off happens, 25 for a shirt, a shirt yeah. Well, that's like a good shirt like a nice quality like yeah. Oh, you can have education, yeah nice.

One of my favorite ones, is the quest account which goes really nicely for the game of theme. um Yes, I was about to say that um so game off happens every november. So it'll happen at the end of november, um so at the start of november and run for the whole month of november, um so checking hands came but um towards the end of the stream we'll go into some other game jams that are coming up. So if you do want to get involved beforehand, uh we'll go into those but I'll just say lee.

What we should do is we should have a game off um t-shirt you can buy because, like we have the universe ones which are now sold out, it's still the universe hoodie, but we should have game off like why not! Oh my pleasure smash. You are welcome all right back to the game off so game off submissions. Again they happen every november, which is literally what we're just about to talk about so every november they go for um the month of november.

um Obviously it says for us second november, because we're in australia we're ahead of everyone, so it happens on the first november pt time so us time. um What's really cool about the game of two is the fact that there's like all this community stuff? So if you look at the community, um they have a discord, they have topics, they have promote games like check out like stuff, so you can check out a discord server and things like that. Look I I haven't.

I haven't wrote a little topic there um and then there's like all the screenshots for different games and I'm going to go like um we're not going to spoil those at the moment. But there's all the submissions there, but one of the coolest things is github. Game off is not actually judged by like a panel of judges or anything. So one of the coolest things about github game off is it's all community voting.

So if you submit a game, you get the option to vote for a game and there's always, I think, it's first second third or at least first and second, and then there's um like a few different categories as well um for the game, so yeah like yeah. So there's like a bunch how many different categories do we have lee for for the games? Obviously, like there's yeah, I know we have first and second at least I think we got like first.

Second and third and there's like a few different categories, it's kind of similar to like json game games, six yeah. It goes six different categories, zero. You.

Squeak out the wall right, why are you counting them? Let's fire up the first game, so the first game is called paraluna. This was a game that got second um in our in the github game of um let's see, if I can give you their repo as well all right. So here is I'll, put it in here as well. Okay, so the first game is paraluna um done by well that github name is remronts um and if we have a look at their repo, as you can see, actually that's pinned at the top as well.

uh So here is para luna, the repo as well, so I've got all games ready um to go. I also have a keyboard mouse and a controller depending on the type of game that they're going to or whether, like I think, some of the games. What I briefly saw may have controller capabilities, so we'll see what happens.

But again I haven't played any of these games before this is gonna, be my first run of each of the games um and we're gonna see like from, like our point of view like whether the game is intuitive easy to run. The controls are good, the graphics, music gameplay all that kind of stuff. So let's zoom in nice and big on here paraluna, I like I like this graphic, it's kind of cool all right. So let's pause our background music, oh yeah, dark mode for the win, yeah, actually yeah.

This is github dark mode if anyone hasn't seen it so previously. I was writing an extension for dark mode called dark reader. um Now I can actually switch the entire thing off because github has native dark mode. So if you go to your um settings on github um and you go down to this like appearance, um you can choose your theme also, if you're just on your home page, it should have like a little toggle on your homepage here at the top here.

So like it's got your little little um kitty cat at the top here, so you go dark light.

I'm so excited I can actually show off actual dark theme um because previously, like everyone would be like whoa github has a dark mode. I'm like no. It's just me running dark reader which actually, in itself dark reader in itself, is open source. So this is the one we're using um so for those people who have websites that don't have that. Why is dark reader turn it on, and then we just make sure that it's off we github ah yeah.

I had it off already there we go so this is all nate, so this is uh dark grader, which is what I was using before to make my github look dark because I want to be on stream going. Oh wow get up, looks so good dark and I knew dark boy was coming.

I had to like, keep it quiet, um so that's actual dark radar, and then, if I like that, um you should be able to say um it almost it's protected by browser, but most things you can go see like dark mode, but like so many websites. These days have um like a dark mode anyway, um yeah, which is pretty good. So like even facebook. It's like dark moon and stuff, um but yeah. This is our actual github dark mode, but yeah.

All right, let's actually go, play this game, I'm keen so here's the repo which you guys have in your links and let's run this game, I'm gonna pause the actual music going and run the game. Oh, I can play in full screen. Oh that's way too. Big full screen for me is giant because I have, as giant as like 32 inch monitor whoa.

The moon is haunted.

Press start I'm assuming that's the space for okay, spacebar mouse click, okay platform, scroller, whoa, okay. I have no idea what the objective of this game.

Okay, so I can move the mouse screener, okay cool, so you can move the mouse screen around the mouse around like that um clicking shoots things, I'm assuming that's my life's up the top there. Oh actually I don't know the tomatoes looks like it looks. Like I landed on the moon, there's the earth I landed on the moon. I can use my um wasd keys to move and my space bar to like jump around.

Oh okay, spacebar, so spacebars jump and then, like jump again, is like to fire your propeller, okay, let's actually read it: okay, ghostbuster, isn't gonna. Let a few hundred thousand comments get in the way of what she does best ghost busting halloween is a 2d shoot again that's set inside a haunted castle on the moon, whoa shoot, float, dash and bounce around in low gravity, while exercising ghosts and other vengeful spirits.

Wow like it gets pretty crazy. Left click show. Okay, we figured out the grant the um the control okay break. To f. That's good. I mean f to break shoot. The monoliths okay.

Okay, that's break that's kind of cool, oh yeah, so you want some insights on this game by the way. Okay, let's get some insights on the games at the moment. Okay, um I think I'm very much on the same as this like this one was made in go. Not I really like the graphics. Actually, I kind of like the um like the pixelated look of it.

Oh, I go into the next screen. Okay, there's the haunted castle um this place. One of this place this game. Okay, for jumping to go. This game won first place in game play category, so obviously it's gonna, be one of the best game plays that we've played that we'll play all day. um I also won second place overall, so this is um setting the standard for you here. Okay, so I just shoot the ghost.

Get him get him, get him yeah he's like floating around. Oh, I keep that. That's really annoying. That's obviously not the game. That's just the fact that I have a giant ass computer screen, monitor thingy, that's going all over the place.

How do I control the flight a bit more? Okay, you just like turn a specific way with your gun, and then it controls your flight a bit better.

It's like a platform of it's like all side scrolling platform up, but it's also like got a few elements of like shoot. It first measures you use it. It works yeah. I know right how cool is this game? Like I love the colors and like everything in it, ah they are obviously not good.

Yeah, this is like he's done such a great job on this. He or she.

Whoever created this has done a great job.

Okay, so that's obviously so it said, save oh! No! No! This game is not javascript, so this game was um built in um go to mr ghost um yeah. No, so, unlike as I said, unlike just 13k games, these games aren't um there's no restriction on like what platform you have to build them in. um So some people built their games in unity. Some people have like built them in. This is like a boss here that I'm fighting yeah some people built their games in I'm unreal.

Oh yeah, these are all like single player, uh single teams as well, like all the um submissions for game offer individuals which is kind of cool. I think.

In a way, who's them seeing linux comp again yeah, I'm one of the mcs there's a few of us, because it runs over three days.

Oh okay, so it's back to mr ghost. uh After this, mr ghost boss, I think we should go to the next game. We've got about what a bunch of games we're gonna get through and I'm like just exciting and just like, like in this game. Actually I like all games. So it's a bit of a problem for me.

Yeah, so don't forget! This game is built in um godot engine and, as lee said, um go.con is on this weekend. Actually, let's just let the ghost kill me, oh, we have a look at so go.con.

Okay, next song, we've got is catapult. It's gonna be fun catapult again. This is another one made with um godot. um So let's have a look by the deep fold. Oh there we go so on the actual page. It's got the um uh cool, open source nest, games; okay, I'm gonna, share lee's link here and then I'm benny open source nurse games github how the nintendo entertainment system lives on that's crazy.

We've got time down again, that's right. I removed the timeout so um yeah lee again, as we mentioned lee is the one who runs um game off and also happens to work at github as well on my team. So really, and I get to work a lot together, which is really fun all right. Next game we've got is catapult.

And drag the cat into the catapult and let it go to launch this sounds like it'd, be a really good mobile game, um so that's catapult there, um so I'm gonna share the link with you all and then on the github repo as well. Actually I should be like starring all these, so I can see them. It was the previous one. I had ram rats there. We.

Go rats rats, it's not the webpage you're looking for whoopsie all right and we will start him all right catapult. Oh there we go. I was like this enough. Sound. It's got sound! Okay! This is another game um built in godot. um The cat goes on a mission for the moon. Oh that's! So funny you gotta put the cat in a slingshot giant get into the moon.

This is cool music, look at the cat going back and forth; okay, so um click buttons and to select them click and hold left mouse to drag. The cat then drag to the catapult, release, click and hold left mouse to create trampolines.

Oh, you can actually download it as well. So it's on windows, linux and mac, which is pretty cool all right. Let's go.

Okay, so you want it a little bit further down. Oh here I want one. Oh one of the golden fish. Okay, that's like okay, so we got three trampolines. A lot of games are playable on the web. Yeah!

That's right! We can play him in the web, we're good okay! Then we want a trampoline right there, so he goes boing. Oh, what I hit the off screen, okay and then he's gonna start coming down about now. Boing go I'm going! Oh, I miss all the golden fishy there you go! Oh! What is that?

Oh wow? Oh I'm not far away from the moon! Now I'm a hundred and I'm 12 000 miles from the moon.

Oh, I got a cloud. What does a cloud do?

Well what the heck it was like. What was that.

Okay, so the milk helps you create the trampolines okay, that's kind of cool.

Cloud, let's see how far you get on each play: yeah, I'm not getting closer. Of course not you get it's it's per thing, so you what you need to do is you need to like. Do it a number of times, so you can buy like extra things. So you get like a bigger catapult.

Let's try that there you go so a big catapult now so she'll be able to get further, so you gotta keep going until you get like enough fish to eventually get you to the.

The rocket comes in and there's a face on the moon, because that's what they saw, man on the moon and then the man on moon's just sitting there just minding his own business, so 1902 and rocket just gets stuck in his face. um So that's what this is inspired by this game morning. The one that I just posted there you'll see that the it's usually a physical event so like it's usually in san francisco's whole bunch of like um locations.

You can usually go to the global game. Jam all around the world is virtual this year. So if you jump on and you go participate in a jam, there's a whole list of game jams that you can participate in. Some of them are individual. I think um some of them are groups. They just go in sign up for an account um and then go and find a game jam to be part of uh which is really fun.

um The other one was, I think, unreal engine um does have some learning stuff as well, so yeah unreal engine also has their learning course um yeah. So there's a whole bunch of ways to get started in game programming. If you haven't already um the other one that I would encourage you yeah yeah unreal is a bit more advanced, the other one I encourage you to get involved in is just like on the h.I.o game jam website.

If you go to the community here is probably where you want to like really start to like chat to people and get started people. If you go here and you look and you scroll down just to hear, there's a discord server.

So if you jump into the discord server, this is a really good way to find other people who are like similar in terms of like turkey, man you're talking about trying to find someone to be an artist right, so you're friends from 2k games, yeah exactly um and then that was the alarm we're gonna mentioned as well. There's js 13k um games too.

You got got friends yeah. Do you wanna check it out? Yeah the others js 13k games has happened um in august like mid august mid september every year. This is specifically for javascript, though um yeah go check this one out. This is um the discord for gamers there's like a bunch of general stuff. I obviously posted our stream before um and like you can see here.

These are some of the people who submitted the games, so you just chat to them um for running a discord like a boss, nice, hello, um oh they were on before uh they're offline now, but I did see the the um the discord people before and you.

Go into, and you can obviously like add your role and you say: look I'm looking for this person or you know, I'm wanting to participate in the global game jam looking for someone to do next to my set so yeah like it's a really good place to go and find your people um I'm finding more and more, especially as I talk to people on these open source friday, chats like talking to maintainers a lot of them use discord for their community um stuff, which is really good.

Now, the other thing I'm going to encourage you to get involved in um which is brand new, we're starting it off um from this week.

So here is the link to this week's um forum, so github community, one of our github community team, has started this, and so what we're to do now is every week after our open source friday chat, we're going to jump on here and we're going to look at um what will there be a thread for the stream that we've just done, and this is where, like I'll post up say, for example, I'll post up this week, I'll post up the list of games that we went through, so we can all chat about them.

This is a good way to come and find other people who are already part of today's stream chat. People talk to people, say hey. I was the dude who was looking for this or the girl looking for this or the guy who said mention this, um so this is a really good way to get involved, so I'm gonna be in here straight afterwards. I'm gonna share the list of games that we talked about today, because obviously we didn't get to get through all of them.

We didn't even get to go through all of lee's lists that he had there's so many games um yeah I'm keen to do another one of these, so um I think if everyone likes it um today, I think we'll do another one. So the other way to keep up to date with what's happening on our github streams, is to check out our meetup group. So here's our meetup group here so obviously the one we've got. This is the one we did today so open source friday.

I think it's a pretty good idea, so, oh this big, like giant light, look the light is shining in on me. Well, I think um yeah, okay do eat. Okay, your bees yo, do whatever you think you guys are so lovely uh yeah. I think it'd be a good one to just. um You know to do again and to like just go over the next sort of games that leigh's posted for us and have a bit of fun.
