Foreign off is right around the corner. Charm is back with another great CLI tool, some great wassom developments and a pick of the week that combines three of my favorite things: The Simpsons, sneakers and memes. All that and more on this episode of the download.

Welcome back to another episode of the download I'm, your host Christina Warren senior developer Advocate at GitHub, and this is the show where we cover the latest developer news and open source projects. My sweatshirt this week is I think it was from like a Vans by The Simpsons collab from a couple years ago featuring my favorite Lisa Simpson. uh This will be relevant later in the show, so stay tuned for why I'm wearing this all right? So do that now all right, let's get into the news. The first thing that I want to tell you about is that we are now just two weeks away from GitHub Universe GitHub universe is back in person for the first time since 2019, it's been a minute and it will be November 9th and 10th in San Francisco California at the Europe Buena Center for the Arts. Do not worry.

If you can't meet us in person, you can still catch up on all the great content online at githubuniverse.com uh I'm actually going to be in San Francisco next week, when I record the show, so maybe we'll do a little bit of like a GitHub, Universe preview edition of the download. Okay, moving on to some other stuff that is coming up very soon game off kicks off on November 1st, which is what like Tuesday I, think and uh can you believe it? This is game off's 10th year in existence. So if you're not familiar game off, is an annual game Jam or you know like a hackathon for building games, but it's a little bit different than most. It lasts the entire month of November not just a weekend, and it's a really good excuse.

If you want to learn a new language or if you want to try out a new game engine or if you even want to build your first game, I might actually try to build mine for my play date to be honest, but here's the catch. Your game needs to abide by a theme and that theme will be announced on November 1st at 13, 37, Pacific Time, get it it's leaked and, uh and then you'll have 30 days to build your game. You can team up, you can do it solo, whatever you want.

uh There's all there was a ton of news to cover this week, but I decided that I kind of wanted to do like a little bit of a theme, so I'm dubbing this week CLI week on the download and, to my mind you cannot talk about great CLI utilities without talking about charm, and they are the team behind the library's charm and bubble tea and gum and glow and- and there are lots of others- we've actually talked about charm um on this show a couple times before, I really like what they do.

I actually got a chance to do a live stream with some members of their team. Earlier this month, they're super cool people, love them, but charm has a new tool and it is called VHS and it lets you generate terminal, gifs, yes, I, say GIF or video files with code, it's very cool. So the scenario is this: you want to demo your CLI or Tui application, but capturing your command line.

Output can, frankly, be a little bit of a pain right, like I've, had to do this for years, and there is an art to getting the perfect capture and the frame rate from your terminal emulator. But then, if you need to change the dimensions or the phone onto the colors, you have to start all over again.

It's the whole thing, but this is where something like VHS is really great, because you can basically script your demo, you can customize what you want the output to be, and then you can run that in a script and have it output as a video file or a gif or even a collection of PNG frames.

um I've only had a little bit of time to play with VHS, but I already really like it. So I've got a link to their GitHub repo, which has tons of examples. That's all linked down below now. If you are looking for something that you want to actually capture directly from your terminal like as you're actually typing things rather than something you have to script in advance, you want to check out eskinema, which I've linked down below too. It will do that for you and give you very small file sizes that are very good.

Looking, there's also a cool project that can turn the uh a schema files into gifs. So I've got that link too love. It all right. So now you're trying to show off your great-looking TY, but you want to make sure that it looks great right. So one of the best ways to do that is probably to use textual, and this is something we've talked about on the show before it's a Tui framework for Python and it was inspired by modern web development, and so you can make your python text apps.

Look extremely extremely good and version 0.2.0 was released last week and uh it might sound like a small update, but it actually isn't. I've got a link to the devs blog post, which outlines the changes, but the big news is that it now has CSS support for styling. So this is awesome. My kudos to that whole team and I've got links to their GitHub repo in the project page down below all right.

Let's keep the command line, love going and talk a little bit about webassembly a little bit um so one of my most genuine, like favorite tools out there is something called tailscale and tailscale makes it really easy to SSH into your various devices, even stuff, like your phone or your tablet from anywhere in the world. But you don't have to worry about getting stuck in like a black hole of networking and DNS errors under the hood. It uses why wire guard, so it's actually very secure and tailscale is so cool.

There's a really good free plan. If you want to try it out and if you've ever like tried to get your parents like attached to your Plex server at your house. This is something that will be very beneficial for all of you, anyway, I'm not paid by any of this uh by Taylor school by the way. I'm. Just genuinely really big fan it's great okay, so tailscale just launched a web-based SSH client and you might be like oh big deal. Anybody could do that. Okay, this is what's different.

Their SSH client actually turns your browser into a tailscale client, so it can join your tailnet the same way, any other devices that you've got tailscale installed can and to do this, the team had to Port the tailscale client wire guard, their SSH client, a user space. Network stack all of that to webassembly and that's Bonkers, okay, but here's the best part. The team wanted to make this open source, but to do that, they had to be able to still interface with parts of the tail scale code base that isn't open.

um So to accomplish this, they packaged the SSH class and as an npm module, and this is notable because tailskill is a ghost shop, so they package basically something and go in npm, wrapped with JavaScript package in npm, so it can be open sourced, I love. Absolutely everything about this great work to that team. I've got links um to the npm module to their blog post to their project. Everything down below okay, speaking of great stuff, with webassembly Docker, showed off a preview of um Docker working with webassembly.

Now I'm going to be honest with you right now, I, don't actually completely understand the use case for Docker and webassembly I I, really don't but I love the Innovation I'm really excited to see webassembly get adopted more places, and so I've got a link to the to the docker plus wassum preview down below very good stuff. We talked about and now it's time for my pick of the week and this one is courtesy of editor Matt all right. So a couple things about me: I'm, a massive fan of The Simpsons, massive uh I. Don't really watch the current seasons, but it's one of my favorite shows of all time, I'm also really into sneakers and I'm very into memes. So this leaked Adidas Simpsons shoe based on that famous Simpson, meme or GIF of you know Homer backing into the hedges. It's extremely my-ish, like it's perfect.

For me, um a fan had actually made a similar looking mock-up that went viral and I guess Adidas took notice and um they wanted to get some good publicity this week. So, according to the sneaker leakers, who are normally very accurate, they mocked there is going to be a Stan Smith variant in green with Homer on it with the Shrubbery Motif. It looks. Great Sam Smith, especially in green, are actually like my go-to, like walking around shoes if I'm not wearing Jordans, so you know I'm gonna buy these uh even if I have to pay.

You know way above retail, I, hope, I, don't but I love it, um and uh and and that's it. So that's my pick of the week.
