Hi I see you're trying to do a video chat, GPT Mania, the Advent of code 2022, a great new email project for react fans and a fig of the week that will appeal to the Retro gamer in all of us all that and more on this episode of the download.

Welcome back to another episode of the download I'm, your I'm yourstina Warren senior developer Advocate at GitHub and holidays in some weird Seattle weather, kept us off the air for a couple of weeks, but we're back if you're new. This is the show where we cover the latest developer news and open source Projects, please like And, subscribe and all that good stuff. So my sweater this week is clippy. uh More specifically, this is a clippy ugly sweater that Microsoft officially released. Can you believe that, a couple of weeks ago they released this I love?

It uh I would also like to think that my five years of incessant bullying of the fine folks in marcom, trying to get them to embrace Microsoft's clippy Roots, played a role in this decision to gift us. With this wonderful item. My girl, Caitlin, who I forgot to shout out last week, is wearing one two I love it.

In any event, this sweater rules and I would like to give extra apologies to editor Matt for the extra work that the green is going to make him do for the green screen, but I think we can all agree. It was worth it all right, let's get into the news, so first up, let's talk about the thing that everyone has been talking about for for the last 10 days or so, and that is chat. Gpt, so chat. Gpt, if you are not familiar, is a chat.

Bot trained by open ai's, gpt3, natural language, machine learning, model and gbt3 is the and its derivative projects have been used in things like GitHub copilot, Dolly, 2 openai is whisper and more so. The idea is that this is a chat bot that has been trained on gpt3, and it can give you incredible results to questions that you ask and in remarkably human readable ways. So, for instance, I asked chat GPT why any of us should care about it, and this is what it told me chat.

Gbt is a large, powerful language model that was trained by openai language models like chat GPT are designed to generate human-like text and can be used for a variety of natural language processing tasks such as language, translation text, summarization and dialogue generation. They can also be used to generate creative text such as short stories or poems as a large, powerful language model chat. Gpt has the potential to be very useful for a wide range of applications and is worth considering if you're working on any projects that involve a natural language, processing, great okay.

That answer is honestly a little bit generic, but I was able to ask it something. Similar and I got an even more in-depth answer, so you know keep playing around with it already chat. Gpt has taken over the web, or at least the parts of the web that I frequent with screenshots of interactions going viral like everywhere and Sam Waltman, the CEO of openai tweeted earlier in the week that in its first week out chat, gbt already has over a million users, but the number's even higher.

Now it's incredible and people have actually done some really remarkable stuff, with chat GPT already and so Linked In. The show notes and the description down below I've got blogs uh to people who did some really great stuff. For instance, Jonas degrave built a virtual machine inside chat, GPT and Dylan black taught chat, GPT to invent a language and front of the Pod front of the show friend.

In any event, Simon Wilson has been blogging about how he's been using chat, GPT and GitHub co-pilot to teach himself rust, I love this stuff and I'm, not gonna get into the inevitable drama and the hyperbole over chat gbt now from both its critics and its boosters. But I will say that this is an even better Real World example about how much AI models have been improving and I can't wait to see what else people do with this stuff.

Moving on it is December, which means that it is the holiday season for a number of people who celebrate that sort of thing, and that means that it is time for the Advent of code and the Advent of code is an annual Christmas holiday themed programming challenge that runs for one day from December, like it's one challenge a day from December 1st through December 25th, using a similar model to an advent calendar and it was created by Eric, wassel and I. Think this is its eighth year in existence.

It's a super fun way to learn something new or to test your skills, or you know just to have fun, and this year, Advent of code launched right after chat GPT. So of course, people have been using chat gbt to solve the puzzles for them, which okay, that's cool. It kind of misses the point, but you know what you do you you can cheat if you want to I will not judge you.

However, instead of doing that, I would like to give another shout out to Simon Willison who's been using the Advent of code as his way of teaching himself rust. Alongside those tools that I mentioned before, like copilot and chat, GPT uh I think this is genius. If I had more time, I would totally do it. The good news is asthma. Code puzzles are available year round, so you can do them at your leisure, great work, as always, Eric and happy coding.

Everyone moving on I want to talk about some great Community projects, and the first is one called react email, and this is a new project that is on GitHub, it's also available at react.email, and it's basically what the name implies.

It lets you build and send emails using react and typescript, and it's from Xeno Rocha, who you might know best as the creator of the Dracula theme that everybody loves, including me and Boo kenoshida, and the idea around this is great because it comes with a set of components and it integrates with a lot of email providers, meaning that you can make it much easier to build and generate emails that work really well across a bunch of services, and it does it in a really easy to use way.

I've been wanting to build my own newsletter for a while, but I've been pushing back against doing it on sub stack or one of the other services, even though that would like make a lot more sense, but one of the challenges that I've been facing when trying to approach these things myself is all the ridiculous email rules that we still have to follow when sending email in 2022 to make them readable and and sendable by various providers and like I, just don't want to have to code tables in 2022., I I, just don't so I'm a really big fan of this.

It looks great it's open source, great job to Zeno and Boo and I've got a link to the main website and the GitHub repo in the links and the description down below, and next I also want to give a shout out to the Assad Linux project for adding support for Apple GPU drivers in its latest Alpha release. So Asahi Linux is a Linux distro. That's aimed at basically porting Linux to Apple silicon Max. This is a really ambitious project.

That's required a lot of reverse engineering because it isn't enough to just have Linux run on Apple silicon with the end goal of this project is to make Linux work, so it can be a daily driver on Apple silicon machines and one of the biggest hurdles has been getting GPU acceleration to work, and this is a challenge because Apple designed the Apple silicon ships, but it obviously they haven't, made a driver available to anyone else, and so the team had to reverse engineer it to build their own anyway.

The team has done a ton of great work and as of right now, the alpha driver is good enough to run old versions of Quake 3 in 60 frames per second in 4k. Not bad and I've got a link to the projects blog post and the GitHub repo. This is still not ready for most people to use day to day, because it's missing a lot of support for other Hardware features, but I think it's fantastic. How far project has come in the last couple of years?

It's a volunteer effort, and so, if you support what they're doing I recommend supporting them on GitHub sponsors or patreon for my pick of the week all right, so this console predates Me by quite a few years, but I considered the OG Mass Market video game console, and that, of course, is the Atari 2600.. Don't add me Magnavox Odyssey fans, it's the 2600. We know it. The 2600 came out in 1977 and there's even a Lego version that was released a few months ago.

That we mentioned on this show it's great, but what's even cooler, I think is that there's still a viable Homebrew market around this machine and this week I discovered that there's a project that brings the Atari 2600 development environment to visual studio code. It's an extension called Atari Dev studio and its developer, builds it as a One-Stop shop for any programmer and includes a number of built-in features to allow you to design, develop and Test games for your favorite system. It works throughout the 2600 and the Atari 7800 and it works across platforms.

Mac, Windows, Linux, I love. This look, I may never have been able to appreciate playing ET the game for the Atari 2600, which is widely considered to be the worst game of all time, though I did play Superman, 64, so I think that, actually might be worse.
