Description
Anil Dash is cofounder and CEO of ThinkUp, the creators of Makerbase, a directory of apps and websites and the people who create them, and ThinkUp, which offers fun personal insights into social media activity. Dash is also cofounder of Activate, the consultancy which defines strategy for the most important companies in technology and media. Described as a "blogging pioneer" by the New Yorker, he has published his blog at anildash.com continuously since 1999, earning recognition as a Webby honoree. In 2013, Time named @anildash one of the best accounts on Twitter, and some of its half million followers agree.
Dash serves on the board of Stack Exchange, as well as non-profits like the Data & Society Research Institute, the Lower East Side Girls Club and the NY Tech Meetup, the largest technology trade group in the United States. Dash has been a contributing editor and monthly columnist for Wired and he advises startups and non-profits including Medium and DonorsChoose. Dash's digital works have been exhibited in the New Museum of Contemporary Art and he co-created monegraph, the first system to use bitcoin technology to verify original digital creations.

This
is
what
I
was
going
to
do
for
a
living,
and
this
wasn't
gonna
do
the
rest
of
my
life
was
like
make
the
internet
using
technology
and
especially
that
I
would
connect
to
a
community
of
other
people
that
were
doing
the
same
thing
now.
A
lot
of
you
were
a
little
younger
or
might
not
have
been
in
industry,
then,
and
it's
hard
to
picture
what
it
was
like
in
1999.
It
was
a
time
of
unimaginable
innovation
at
the
end
of
the
last
century.
A
So
I
wanted
to
give
you
a
quick
overview
of
the
things
that
are
completely
different
in
1999
that
we
couldn't
have
imagined
about
the
future
today,
here
in
2015.
First
of
all,
one
of
the
important
new
categories
of
hardware
in
1999
was
it
called
a
smart
watch.
It
was
going
to
connect
to
the
internet
and
have
apps
that
would
pull
down
data
even
if
it
looked
a
little
bit
clunky.
There's
nothing
like
that.
A
Today,
right,
I
haven't
done
any
kind
of
innovation
like
that
and
today's
technology
industry
there
were
startups
that
were
focused
on
digital
currencies
or
companies
like
flues,
though,
obviously
we're
going
to
transform
the
way
we
spend
our
money.
The
way
we
transfer
funds
right
in,
arguably
they
would
have
huge
in
act.
I'm
sure
you
can't
imagine
anything
like
that
today.
A
They
were
also
like
a
lot
of
investment
going
into
augmented
reality
and
3d
headsets
and
all
the
sort
of
virtual
reality
tools
that
were
going
to
help
people
shop
differently
and
play
differently.
There's
nothing
like
that
today,
certainly,
and
actually
one
of
the
people
I
met
back
then
F
Williams
was
working
with
the
team
of
people
to
build
a
blogging
tool.
That
would
let
anybody
express
themselves,
they
called
it
blogger
and
it
was
going
to
let
you
publish
the
world
instantly
and
share
your
thoughts.

We've
solved
that
problem,
so
unimaginable
innovation
back
in
1999,
on
concepts
and
areas
that
we
completely
solved
the
problem
back
then
and
have
not
revisited
ever
since,
because
that
was
all
handled
or
maybe
not.
Obviously,
these
are
things
that
we
keep
revisiting.
These
are
tech
ideas
to
keep
popping
up
and
they're
a
lot
better.
A
Now
the
Apple
watch
is
way
better
than
the
clunky
old
crap
we
had
in
the
last
century,
but
one
of
the
reasons
I
tell
these
stories
besides
pointing
out
how
absurd
it
is
that
we
keep
solving
the
same
problems
over
and
over
and
over
it's
because
it's
easy
to
forget.
You
might
not
have
heard
of
a
lot
of
the
1999
versions
of
the
2015
technologies
because
we
seem
to
like
not
have
any
historical
memory
as
an
industry
as
creators
we
just
are
always
starting
from
scratch.

Anu
and
it's
kind
of
the
opposite
of
how
we
code
we're
always
like.
Oh,
there
must
be
some
code,
I
can
reuse
here.
Let
me
just
grab
a
library
and
solve
that
problem.
I,
don't
want
to
solve
that
again,
but
when
it
comes
to
the
fundamental
underlying
concepts
we
lock
up
to
things
like
they've
never
been
done
before,
and
that
has
some
costs
because
we
erased
the
learnings
of
what
happened
before
good
and
bad
now.
A
In
some
cases
we
should
have
left
some
of
that
stuff
in
the
past,
but
in
a
lot
of
cases,
they're
important,
valuable
lessons
learned
by
important,
valuable
creators
that
we
just
don't
hear
from
today
see
the
truth
is
back.
Then,
in
1999,
when
I
started
connecting
with
other
people
on
what
would
become
the
social
web
or
in
social
media,
there
was
an
internet
we
expected
to
have
and
in
some
ways
the
internet
we
ended
up
with
is
even
better.

So
that's
awesome,
but
if
I
think
back
to
my
1999
self,
that
version
of
me
thought
certainly,
even
though
there's
only
a
quarter
of
our
computer
science,
grads
or
women.
That
number
has
to
go
up
by
2015
right.
There's!
No
way
it
could
go
down,
even
though
only
a
tiny
fraction
of
funding
in
the
industry
is
going
to
underrepresented
minorities.
Certainly
that
number
would
only
go
up
right,
so
there
were
some
things
along
the
way
that
didn't
get
better
like
we
just
assumed
they
would
and
part
of
the
reason
why?

Because
we
didn't
tell
the
story
loud
enough,
that
these
are
things
we
needed
to
work
on,
so
that
was
the
community
I
came
out
of
was
people
that
were
creating
the
early
versions
of
the
internet
we
use
today,
and
the
community
of
people
specifically
that
I
was
in,
like
we
were
publishing
on
the
internet,
was
called
the
blogosphere.
This
is
like
this
horrible
term.
That's
like
the
worst
targeted
in
the
world.
They
don't
use
as
much
anymore,
but
for
a
while
there.
That
was
what
they
really
called
it
a
lot.
A
The
thing
about
the
word
blogosphere
is
it's
deliberately
terrible
and
I'll.
Tell
you
why?
How
many
of
you
know
who
coined
the
word
blogosphere?
Anybody
I'm
guessing.
Nobody
was
this
guy
Brad
Graham,
my
friend
Brad
was
trying
to
come
up
with
the
worst
possible
descriptions
for
a
community
of
people
publishing
on
the
internet
word
so
bad
that
there's
no
way
that
media
would
actually
pick
them
up
and
use
them
to
describe
us.
A

So
there's
this
idea
that
was
baked
in
and
that's
why
he
had
the
authority
that
were
even
if
he
made
a
joke
about
what
they
call
the
blogosphere.
It
would
still
catch
on
because
we
paid
attention
to
it,
but
some
who
hair
along
the
way
his
contributions,
kind
of
got
erased.
People
don't
know
his
name
or
his
face.
Another
person
like
that
I
think
of
his
Leslie
harp
old
unless
he
was
a
friend
of
mine
who
was
incredible
like
designer
and
a
front-end
developer.
A
That
could
make
these
really
brilliant
designs,
but
use
them
to
express
these
really
personal
stories.
Now,
every
day
now
we
see
people
sharing
stuff,
sometimes
just
too
much
information
on
social
media
and
social
networks.
But
at
that
point
you
had
to
have
both
the
willingness
to
tell
a
personal
story
and
the
tech
chops
to
actually
put
it
up
at
an
era
before
you
could
push
a
button
and
publish
something
and
she
had
both,
and
so
it's
this
really
interesting
combination
of
bringing
innovation,
not
just
at
a
technology
level,
but
at
an
expressive
level.

Through
the
medium
and
most
you
probably
haven't
heard
her
name
either
same
goes
for
Aaron
Hawkins
Aaron's
site
was
the
first
I
saw
to
talk
about
civil
rights
and
particularly
a
lot
of
social
justice
issues
that
impact
black
Americans
african-americans
and
dealing
with
all
aspects
of
society,
but
doing
it
in
this
really
funny
engaging
voice
on
his
blog
and
his
light
was
called
uppity
Negro
and
he
lived
up
to
it.
He
loved
kind
of
owning
that
but
there's
a
site
where
I
look
at
today.
The
people
in
the
black
lives
matter
movement.
A
Think
these
days
have
seen
almost
like
this
mythological
hacktivists
martyr
hero,
and
he
was
a
great
incredible
activist-
I
mean
he
did
meaningful
work,
but
I
knew
him
also
as
a
kid
I
met
before
he
was
even
a
teenager,
who
was
putting
out
snippets
of
code
little
Python
scripts
that
were
useful
to
me
or
a
JavaScript
bookmarklet.
That
would
help
me
do
a
task
and
so
that
reputation
of
his
as
somebody
that
made
little
useful
bits
of
code
has
sort
of
started
to
disappear
in
a
road
away,
as
this
mythology
is
built
around
him.
A
We
don't
necessarily
know
that
the
voices
of
queer
folks
and
black
people
and
women
and
nerdy
little
geeks
that
were
12
years
old
when
they
started
hacking
were
part
of
the
story.
The
story's
get
less
complicated
and
we
go
to,
as
Nicole
said,
these
very
simplified
stories
of
a
lone
hacker
alone,
founder
in
Agra
rise
by
himself,
and
it's
usually
he
building
these
things
on
their
own
and
the
days
and
how
we
create.
All
of
you
know
that
I
mean
the
whole
point
of
github
is
to
show
that
we
create
stuff
together.
A
The
whole
point
of
a
you
know:
a
site
like
stackoverflow
is
to
answer
questions
for
each
other.
We
don't
do
these
things
in
a
vacuum.
We
do
them
together,
but
somehow,
by
the
time,
comes
to
tell
our
stories.
We
forget
the
creative
environments
or
collaborative
environments
and
we
erase
the
people
that
aren't
necessarily
up
front
or
on
a
stage
like
this.

The
weird
thing
is:
other
creative
industries.
Don't
do
this,
they
know
like
those
are
your
music
fans.
You
know
the
liner
notes
will
tell
you
who
played
drums
on
that
tracker
who
made
that
bead
or
who
played
guitar
and
for
me
as
a
kid.
The
first
time
I
saw
like
an
indian
dude
and
the
liner
notes
on
a
record
that
I
loved
I
was
like.
Oh
my
gosh.
We
can
be
funky.
This
is
so
exciting.
Nobody
told
me
like
I
thought.
I'm
just
wished
to
be
good.
A
At
math,
I
was
okay
at
math,
but
I
really
was
funky,
and
so
it's
like
exciting,
like
there's
me,
and
the
same
goes
for
like
if
you're
in
the
movies,
like
you
get
to
every
movie.
At
the
end,
they
have
the
whole
list
of
credits
of
like
who
did
the
catering.
You
can
go
on
netflix
and
watch
something
and
be
like
10
seconds
in
and
be
like.

While
this
person
worked
on
the
power
supply
and
this
person
made
the
paint
app
and
it's
great
because
you
want
to
know
if
you're
a
creator
like
where
did
that
come
from
who
originally
invented
that,
but
the
mac
is
obviously
a
pretty
special
product
of
people
that,
like
really
really
love
it
for
ordinary
products
or
the
normal
products,
are
merely
very
successful
or
not
very
successful.
We
don't
have
any
way
record
what
we've
learned
and
a
lot
of
knowledge
gets
lost.
A

lot
of
voices
get
erased
a
lot
of
the
lessons
we
can
learn
just
sort
of
disappear
in
a
very
real
way.
We
don't
know
who
makes
our
apps,
we
don't
know
who
makes
the
internet
there's
very
often
no
credit
screen
at
all
or
so
a
little
about
page
tucked
away
somewhere.
But
it's
absurd
to
say:
oh
I
spent
an
hour
a
day
cruising
through
photos
on
my
phone
I,
really
like
this
one
menu
interaction.
A
I
love
the
icon
design
or
I
love
the
way
it
sinks
effortlessly
to
the
cloud
I
wonder
who
did
that
and
there's
no
way
to
find
out
and
that's
especially
troubling
when
we
think
about
well,
that's
where
we
find
those
underrepresented
voices
that
have
always
been
there?
Those
that
you
know
the
people
that
we
don't
think
of
is
the
archetypical
founder
in
a
hoodie
are
there
in
the
industry,
but
we
don't
know
what
they're
doing
and
we
don't
see
them
and
the
answer.
Why
is
pretty
simple?
A
They
want
to
tell
a
story
that
is
like
this
genius
went
away
to
the
mountain
top
by
themselves
and
came
back
with
an
app
that
just
leapt
out
of
their
forehead
and
into
the
App
Store,
and
that's
how
they
succeeded
right
and
it's
like
there
may
be
an
actual
process,
that's
a
little
different
than
that.
That
looks
like
white
boarding
in
a
room
or
there's
the
things
that
just
aren't
startups
at
all.
I
think
everyone
in
this
room
has
done
a
little
hack
for
themselves
to
build
a
site
that
they
just
throw
up.

You
know,
after
after
work
one
day
you
just
want
to
get
a
site
running
because
you
have
an
idea
or
you
go
to
a
hackathon.
You
meet
some
of
you've
never
worked
with
before
and
over
a
weekend.
You
build
something:
it's
pretty
cool
and
no
it's
not
the
thing
that
you
do
to
pay
the
bills,
but
it's
something
you're,
proud
of
that.
You
learned
a
lot
from
that,
may
be
influenced
and
inspired.

So
there's
this
idea
about
telling
our
stories
and
when
I
talk
about
this
I
think
a
lot
of
people
come
back
to
it.
We'll
listen,
listen,
I'm,
a
coder
I'm,
a
designer
I'm,
you
know,
I'm,
not
a
person
that,
like
is
going
to
write
the
Great
American
Novel
like
I,
can't
do
that
and
it
turns
out
the
process
of
you're
telling
our
stories
can
actually
be
pretty
simple.

It
can
distill,
be
distilled
really
almost
down
to
two
questions,
and
the
first
is
who
made
that
when
you
look
at
something
we
see
something
I
think
a
lot
of
us
that
are
coders
almost
want
that
x-ray
vision
into
it.
You
see
a
site
that
does
something
or
like.
Oh
that's,
really
clever.
They
did
a
really
thoughtful
way
doing
that
I,
wonder
who
did
that
right
and
if
it
were
movie,
we
could
watch
the
credits,
but
we
don't
quite
have
that
yet,
and
the
other
thing
is
just
talk
about
yourselves.

What
did
you
make
because
I
bet
when
you're
walking
around
today
and
you
introduce
somebody
to
somebody
they
haven't
met?
You
don't
recite
their
LinkedIn
page,
like
you,
don't
read
their
resume
while
they
worked
at
this
corporation
during
these
years
you
say:
oh
no.
She
made
that
site.
You
might
have
seen
it.
It's
really
cool.
It
works
like
this.
You
should
talk
about
what
you
know,
how
she
built
it
and
use
the
same
tech
as
you
right.
We
introduce
ourselves
to
fellow
creative
people
based
on
what
we
make.

Maybe
we
should
start
doing
that
online
to
list
the
things
we
do
so
and
helping
solve
that
problem.
I
started
working
with
my
co-founder
gina
trapani
a
couple
years
ago
too.
If
this
idea
that
kept
coming
up,
then
maybe
we
would
have
nice
to
answer
those
questions.
Some
of
you
might
know
Gina
she.
She
actually
spoke
at
code
comp,
the
very
first
one,
the
very
first
github
event
ever
and
she
created
life
hacker.
She
and
I've
done
a
bunch
of
projects
over
the
years,
and
what
we
came
up
with
was
an
idea
called
maker
base.

If
you
want
to
make
sure
they
got
credit
and
list
the
things
you've
made
and
people
would
be
able
to
see
it,
and
so
we
started
this
experiment
really
just
a
few
weeks
ago,
putting
it
in
front
of
people
and
it's
been
really
interesting
to
watch
what
happened.
This
is
a
friend
of
mine
named
Matt
Howie.
He
created
an
early
web
community
called
metafilter,
that's
still
going
strong
many
years
later,
and
these
days
he
works
at
slack
and
I.
A
A
It's
like
wow,
this
guy's
really
creative
and
then
I
was
a
little
intimidated
because
I
was
like
I,
don't
ship
that
much
stuff
I,
don't
know
how
he
tested
it
like
I'm,
not
that
good
and
then
I
looked
a
little
closer
at
like
one
of
his
projects.
It
was
a
photo
project
where
he
was
going
to
take
a
picture
everyday
of
himself
called
ten
years
of
his
life
and
it
lasted
for
two
years
and
I
thought.
A
Oh
maybe
he
is
like
me
right,
like
I,
don't
know
would
stick
with
it,
but
that
is
what
creativity
is
about.
You
don't
always
have
this
grand
story
of
how
you
made
a
billion
dollar
company.
Sometimes
it's
like
I
just
want
to
express
myself
for
a
while
and
then
after
a
while
I
started
doing
something
else,
and
that
still
has
value.
Some
other
things
check
out
when
we
tell
our
stories
of
what
we
made
and
who
created
them.

One
of
those
things
is
that
if
everybody
starts
to
list
their
projects,
we
start
to
be
able
to
show
well
who
they
tend
to
work
with
who's
in
their
network,
who
do
they?
Collaborate
with
and
one
of
the
things
that
popped
up
was
that
Matt
had
worked
a
Stuart
Butterfield
one
of
the
cofounders
of
slack
15
years
ago
on
a
little
project
that
was
like
a
coding
contest
for
people
and
they'd
stayed
connected
and
all
of
a
sudden
I
stood
understood
a
little
bit
more
about
how
opportunity
happens.

Maybe
if
we
show
how
those
connections
work,
they
can't
and
we
build
a
tool
just
for
folks
here
at
github
to
be
able,
at
this
event,
to
show
what
you've
made.
If
you
want
to
introduce
yourselves
to
others,
you

yourself
with
a
couple
clicks.
We
added
even
a
feature
where
it'll
search
github
for
a
repost.

saying
you
worked
on
a
project
I'll
say
so
this
one
I
get
home,
you
can
add
it

the
idea
was
simply
just
to
make
it
easier
to
share
what
we've
created
and
part
of
the
reason
I
thought
about.
This
is
unlucky,
like
indian
dudes
in
tech
are
doing
all
right,
like
CEO,
Google
and
Microsoft
Adobe
right.

My
mom
reminds
me
this
all
the
time
so
like
I
get
it
we're
doing
all
right,
and
my
ego
likes
that
I
get
to
be
the
kind
of
guy
that
gets
to
come
and
stand
on
a
stage
like
this
and
talk
about
what
I
do.
But
you
know
when
I
got
invited
to
come
here
today.
I
thought
a
lot
about
the
stories
we
tell
and
tech
and
I
thought
about
my
relationship
with
github
in
the
years
since
my
co-founder
Gina
spoke
of
the
first
code
cough
and
me
coming
here
today.

I
did
a
lot
of
talks
where
I
would
get
on
the
stage
and
talk
about
I've
got
a
great
idea,
and
people
should
listen
to
it
and
I've
learned
a
lesson
and
I
did
a
lot
of
those
talks
without
ever
talking
about
any
of
those
folks
whose
names
I
mentioned
earlier
about
Aaron
and
Aaron.
Lastly,
and
Brad,
and
so
many
others
who
were
just
as
creative,
had
just
as
good
ideas
and
didn't
fit
the
mold
of
who
people
expect
to
see
on
a
stage
like
this.

Now
those
are
friends
of
mine
that
can't
tell
their
stories
anymore,
but
so
many
of
you
know
somebody
just
like
that
who's
under
son,
who
has
a
powerful
story
to
tell
you
know
if
a
great
idea
that
years
before
today
came
up
with
some
technologies
that
maybe
would
learn
a
little
bit
from
today
to
make
our
apps
just
a
little
bit
better
I
make
our
sights
a
little
bit
more
thoughtful,
there's
so
much
more
knowledge
we
can
share
and
the
best
part
about
it
is
hearing.
These
stories
is
inspiring.
You
don't
get
demotivated
thinking.

Somebody
used
to
work
on
this
project
15
years
ago,
and
now
it's
still
something
we're
working
on
today.
You
think
well,
this
time
we're
going
to
get
it
right.
The
way
we
get
it
right
is
by
making
sure
we
document
what
we've
created,
who
created
it,
and
this
way
we
can
make
something
that
is
just
a
little
bit
better
than
it
would
have
been.
Otherwise-
and
we
can
fix
these
issues
that
we
thought
up
when
I
started
out,
we
might
already
have
made
a
little
bit
more
progress
on
by
today.
