separate

things

transact

save
money

invest

own
system
running
on
very
ancient
rails,

that

for
transacting

are
made
for

messages

the

using

excited,
because
we're
going
to
build
this
new
layer
on
web
2,
where
we're
going

have

unique
resource
identifiers

for
everything.

years

years
later,
we're
seeing
the
same
ideas
come
on

a
very
different

today
is
the
idea
of
trustlessness

having
enough
information
in
the
system
that
we
don't

another

of
the

question

is:
how
do
we
onboard
our
developer
ecosystems

start

the
tools
that
makes
it
easier
for
them

build

projects
start

take
off,

that's
hugely
inspiring
for
developers,
and
I

think
just
the
the
the
fact
that
anyone
anywhere
can
access
these
protocols
and

that
you

users
are,
are
global

it

their
financial
situation.

doesn't
matter
where
they
went
to
school
or
or
like
where
in
the
world
they're
at
the
fact
that
you
can
have
users
anywhere.

think
that
that
should
be
hugely
motivating
for
developers,
and

think
it's

a
matter
of
time
for
all
of
these
protocols
to
continue
growing
and
just
like
surfacing
more
into

mainstream,

so
that
way
developers
will
learn

them

want
to
build
for
this
new
new
world
for
this
more
open
decentralized
world.

think
that's

of
like
the
long
term
how
this
happens
in

the
short
term.

should

what
does
the
work
look?
What
does
the
world
look
like
in
5

10
years
from
now.

start
the
main
thing
is
that
people
will
be
more
in
control
of
their
assets
and
of
their
information,
so
you
will
be
required
to
you.

won't
be
required
to
trust
in
third
parties
as
much
as
you
are
today
so
right
now
we
are
trusting
financial
institutions
to
keep
our
our
our
money
for
us
in
web3
you're,
going
to
be
able
to
have
control
over
your
assets
by
keeping
your
own
kind
of
private
keys
in
the
traditional
financial
system.

relying

governments
to
control,
currency
and

have
impact

the
trajectory

our
currencies

If

government
happens
to
have
really
bad
monetary

fiscal
policy,
your

and
you

crypto
world
people
will
have
an
alternative

keep
their
assets
and
savings
safe
on
cryptocurrencies

rely
on
governments
in

information
is

being

taken

us

transacted

sold
off
to
the
best
bidder
in
web3.

many
intermediate

will
become
obsolete,

that
means
it
will
be
a
more
efficient
system

creators
are
able

better
profit
from

seeing
this

with

nfts
how

record,
companies

film
studios

being
disintermediated
and
musicians

directors

artists,
don't
need
the

regular
companies
anymore,

galleries

sell

work

going
straight
to
their
customers
to
the
consumer

it's

like
how
this

all

these
tools,
how
the
world
will
look
like,

I'm
optimistic
that
in

general
it

will
be
a

world
where
people
are
more
empowered,

freedom

really
realize
their
their
their
potential
in
in
a
in
a
better
way,
because
we
won't
be
relying
on
other
people
to
realize
our
own
potential.

relying
more
on
ourselves

think
that's
super
exciting.

open
source
building
and
work
is
incentives
so
before
it

really
hard
to
fund
open
source
work.

how
do

profit

and

copy?
So
that's
why
you
know
close

To

make
this
your
project
succeed
and
as
the
project
succeeds,
the

token
link
to
it
gains
in
value
and
so
developers
are
being

being
better
rewarded
for
their
work,

our
incentives
are

more
aligned
with
this

kind
of
like
these,
like
micro
economies,
they
they
attract
not
only
developers
but,

all
sorts

builders.

organization
that

open

huge
community

had
a

foundation
and
they
are
just
a
down-
and
I
was
speaking
yesterday

with
one
of
the
leaders
of
the
the
core
unit,
because
they
have
like
working
groups
called
core
units.

succeed,

they
all
take
on
work
that,

all
the
work
that's
needed
in

that
you

see
kind
of
in
a
traditional
company

taking

source

contributors

stay

each

very

long

many
open
source
projects

get
started
and
they
attrition
over
time

world

open
source.
One
of
the
things
that
I'm
seeing
is
as
we
move
into
the
governance
based
systems.

have
seen
so
far
is
many
holders
of
the
token
do
not
vote
in
governance,
there's
just
a
small
subset
that
votes
in
governance
and
there's
a
long
tail
that
does
not
participate
until
something
major
occurs,
and
maybe
there's
like
a
twitter
campaign
or
something
on
reddit.
That
wakes
everybody
up
and
then
everybody
goes
and
tries
to
vote
if
we're
going
to
make
web
3
a
reality
and
build
for
all
the
areas
that
it
doesn't
serve.

Quite
yet,
governance
seems
to
me
is
going
to
be
a
challenge,
even
with
incentives
aligned
using
tokenomics,
it's
still
very
hard
to
get
people
to
do
participatory.
It's
almost
like
participatory
democracy
and
people.
Often
don't
do
that.
So
how
are
we
going
to
overcome
this
thing?
Is
it
that
we
do
major
campaigns?

just
get
people
to
delegate
their
tokens,
so
there
are
now
web
three
politicians
who
we
vote
for,
and
we
write
their
terms
and
then
there's
it's
very
interesting,
because
it's
interesting
on
this
rails
that
we're
building
we
are
kind
of
creating
another
version
of
what
we
have
in
the
real
world
and
we're
facing
the
same
problems
of
okay.
The
average
voter
doesn't
care
about
fixing
the
pothole
on
the
street,
even
though
it
goes
up
to
governance,
and
they
don't
come
up
to
the
city
council
meetings,
but
we're
seeing
the
same
challenges
in
web
3..

so
it's
a
plutocracy
where
you
know
you
have
venture
capital
firms
who
are
big
token
holders
on
things
like
compound
and
unisof,
and
you
know
all
the
major
decentralized
finance
protocols
and
because
they
get
tokens
or
they
invested
just
in
tokens
or
they
get
tokens
because
of
their
equity
investment.
They
have.
There
are
large
holders
and
they
they
they
can
move
governance
and
because,
like
you
said,
the
the
small
voter
isn't
really,
you
know
doesn't
feel
like
they.
They
can
make
an
impact.

they
don't
vote
so
that
makes
it
even
easier
for
larger
holders
to
just
control,
governance
and-
and
that's
the
state
that
we're
in,
I
think
like,
like
you,
said
ways
to
to
improve
that
will
be
like
a
sort
of
representative
governance,
perhaps
where
we
like
delegate
our
votes
to
someone
who
can
represent
us.
So
smaller
token,
voter
holders
have
somewhat
of
a
say
and
can
kind
of
counterbalance
large
whales.

a
great

git
coin
quadratic
voting.
That's

what
they
do.

it's

a
way
of
increasing
the
weight
of
of
smaller
votes.

kind
of
like
ux
improvements
like
push
notifications
on

web3.

concern

one
of
the
reasons
why
onboarding
people,

onboarding

space

important
thing,
because
I
believe
the
space
is
not
going
away.

challenge
is:
how
do
we
onboard

people,

x,
people
into
this
space,
for
them
to
build
the
solutions
that
we
need
and
for
them
to
actually
participate
and
see
value,
and
so
talking
about
seeing
value
and
seeing
participation?

want
that
to
happen,
but
apart
from
reading
the
news
and
seeing
the
price
of
bitcoin
going
up
or
the
price
of
ethereum
going
up,
can
we
talk
a
little
bit
about
some
of
the
fundamental
good
that
web
3
has
created
in
the
world?
Some
of
the
applications
that
are
beginning
to
go
out
into
the
world
that
are
beginning
to
affect
people's
lives
in
a
positive
way.

think
I

go
back
to
nft's
again,
because
I
think
this
has
been
such
a
great
example
of
what
a
web
3
can
achieve
and
nfts
have
been
kind
of
breaking
into
the
mainstream
because
of
the
impact
that
they're
having
on
a
regular
people.
So,
and
I'm
seeing
this
at
the
defined
myself,
there's
just
this
new
wave
of
readers
and
and
like
audience,
members
that
have
no
previous
experience
with
with
crypto,
unlike
before,
like
where
many
of
newcomers
got
into
crypto.

Because
of
you
know
they
were
trading
tokens
or
because
they,
like
kind
of
the
hard
money
aspect
of
bitcoin.
Now,
there's
this
new
wave
of
people
getting
into
crypto
because
of
how
they
they
they
can
more
easily
connect
with
their
audiences
and
their
fans
and
their
network
and
more
easily
monetize
their
work.
So
I
think
this.
This
is
an
amazing
application.

Being
being
enabled,
I
mean
the
the
the
ability
to
own
something,
a
digital
asset
yeah
for
the
first
time,
so
you
know
before
a
musician
put
out
a
song
on
on
bandcamp
or
or
youtube
or
wherever,
and
that
file
could
be
infinitely
reproduced
and
the
musician
got
nothing
out
of
it.
Even
though
millions
of
people
could
have
maybe
listened
to
to
their
song.

Now
they
can
link
that
file
to
a
unique
token
and
and
sell
this
one
token
or
many
versions
of
it
to
to
his
or
her
fans
and
be
able
to
to
monetize
the
the
success
of
of
of
their
work
on
the
same
same
issue
with
any
other
sort
of
creator
or
artist,
even
even
memes,
or
even
like
the
subject
of
memes.

love
this
example.
There
was,
I
didn't,
you
know
the
the
meme
of
the
girl
with
the
the
burning
house.

many
thousands
of
dollars
off
of
that
nft,
so

this,
this
image
that
we
we've
all
seen
thousands
of
times
and
has
been

reproduced,
forever
online
and

never

monetize

she
made
money
off
of
that.
So
that's
kind
of
you
know
really
an
exciting
use
case,
just
like
digital
ownership
for
the
first
time,
so
that's
kind
of
on
the
nft
side
on
the
d5

think
is
is
exciting
is
the
ability
for
anyone
anywhere
to
grow
their
wealth
and
and
to
protect
their
savings.
So
I'm
I'm
from
chile
and
chile
is
like
a
relatively
stable
country
in
south
america,
but
I
lived
a
long
time
in
argentina
which
is
not
as
stable
and
which
has
a
really
kind
of
bad
inflation
issues.

the
time
I
lived
there,
there
was
like
25
inflation.

linked
to
the
us
dollar
deposit,
those
stable
coins
in
a
lending
protocol
like
other
compound
and
not
only
have
their
value
safely
stored
in
a

also

rates
are
around
four
percent.

That's

first

just

access
to
a

currency
and

need
interest

the

think
that's
a
huge
use
case
for

anyone

people

developing

work
in
the

world
in

without

extensive
computer
science
knowledge
building

user
interfaces
in
a
way
that

easy
to
use

helps
people
to
trust

feel

there

good

with

and
if

2017

crypto.

was
a
huge
kind

run-up

bubble
going
on
so
because
I

remained
interested
in
crypto
since
you

reporting
on
it
in
2013
I
took
the
the
opportunity
to
start
writing
about
it
and
there
was
huge
demand
at
bloomberg
for
anything
crypto
related.

started
thinking
of
book
ideas
because
I
went
into
journalism
because
I
love
writing
and
telling
stories.
So
writing
a
book
had
always
been
kind
of
a
major
goal
for
me.
So
I
was
always
like
on
the
lookout
for
good
book
ideas
and
so
after
the
2017
crypto
bubble,
I
was
thinking
you
know
there
has
to
be
a
good
book
in
here
like
this
space
is
so
insane
and
fascinating
and
interesting.
It's
changed.
It'll
change
the
world,
so
I
started
thinking.

It's
still
it's
still
the
this
well,
the
second
biggest
cryptocurrency
it
fueled
a
lot
of
the
2017
bubble
with
icos,
and
importantly,
it
was
the
first
crypto
that
really
took
bitcoin
a
a
step
further.
So
up
until
ethereum,
all
of
the
alternatives,
alternative
cryptocurrencies
had
been
copies
of
bitcoin
or
forex,
or
they
hadn't
really
kind
of
forced
the
technology
forward.
Ethereum
was
the
first
kind
of
like
touring,
complete
smart
contract
platform,
so
that
already
had
made
an
impact
in
in
tech
and
finance.

I
thought
you
know
whatever
happens
to
ethereum.
The
story
of
ethereum
will
always
be
relevant
and
important
to
have
documented.
So
that's
yeah,
that's
kind
of
why
I
went
I

went
with
it.
