Hi, my name is kai armstrong, I'm the product manager for the editor group of the create stage here at github, and I wanted to talk today about the 13.6 release, that's upcoming for gitlab and what the editor group has planned. So let me get my screen shared here and we will start going through some things. So uh here's the release board for the editor group.

It is full of a lot of um sort of technical debt and bugs that we're gonna go fix and some performance things that we're going to go work on so I'll talk through a few of those things, but I want to start with sort of where we've been and what we did in 13.5. So in 1305 we got through and we released multiple files for snippets.

You can try this out on gitlab.com it'll, be on in the self-managed release in 13.5. This is just a demo snippet that shows off sort of the multiple files and what you can do with it. We're really excited about this feature and so give it a try. Let us know what you think: we'd love any feedback. You have and we'd love to see what you're doing with it.

The flip side of that is, as part of doing that we introduce a little bit of technical debt and some bugs that we want to go back and fix that we're going to work on in 13, 6 and probably future milestones as well. So um so these are these front end bugs that we've got here.

So we've got just some um ui things that are sort of inconsistent in the way that we do things in other parts of gitlab or additional detail that we want to provide to users to make the experience more clear when they're using them.

The big one I wanted to talk about is the snippets rest api for removing repository storage, and so when we introduce snippets and put them into repositories the the mechanism that we use to store that and get it they're on shards. And so we need to introduce an api that allows you to move those between shards and getting, and this will allow you to control and sort of manage where storage is used across um your ghetto instances, if you have multiples of those so we'll be implementing starting to work on that in 13, 6.

it'll probably take us a couple milestones to get through, but I just wanted to highlight that we're dealing with some of the technical debt of shipping that feature for you.

The next big thing that we're working on is performance in the web ide, and so we spent in 13.5. We introduced some new user timing apis to understand performance there, um we're also working on um some calls to moving some calls from the rest to graphql to do performance. We made some changes to tool tips. We've made some changes to the way monaco's loaded in in various places in the application, but um part of what we also did was a technical discovery and sort of opportunities.

We could go and look at so I'll link to this.

This is the output of that technical discovery, which shows sort of um where issues are in terms of the initial loading and, what's going on what our findings are and sort of what our recommendations are so we'll actually be tackling these recommendations in 13.6 so really excited to continue improving the performance of the web id and making that a very fast experience when you do want to go and make those edits there and so keep an eye out for those also take a look at the 13.5 release post when it comes out we'll make sure we've linked to some of the other performance improvements that we've put in there, and the last thing that I want to talk about sort of a big one is nrvs code extension.

So gitlab has a vs code extension, it's called git lab workflow. You can find it in the vs code marketplace. You can find it in a couple. Other marketplaces, if you use um vs code like editors, that are more open source and so what we're going to start looking into is merge, request, reviews inside of vs code, and so we think this is really important.

In terms of meeting developers where they're working and closer to the experiences that they're used to working in, so many developers spend most of their day in their editor and having a sort of context, switch into the gitlab application or other things can be a challenge, and so we're going to be looking into this.

um I will link this epic, so if you have thoughts or feedback or anything you want to provide- or if you want to talk to me about how you're currently doing any of this um I'll put my calendar link in in the video I'll put it in this epic and you can set up some time to chat with me. um I'd really be interested in talking to people about this.

This idea and this opportunity here and so um as part of getting started on this there's a couple things we have to do and the first one is inside of the gitlab workflow extension today. There's already these webview components that exist and they can render issues and they can render merge requests. You can make comments, you can use quick actions and all kinds of things, and so those are already there they're locked up behind a essentially a feature: flag, they're called experimental inside of the extension.

So if you want to go try these out, you can look for the experimental setting in the gitlab workflow extension and toggle that to true and you'll be able to use some of these features already, so um we're going to be going through and cleaning them up. There's a few bugs that we want to go. Look at so I'll talk about those in a minute and we want to just get a feel for sort of how they compare to the current gitlab ui. What are we missing? What are we known?

So we can sort of build a punch list of things that we think we need to address or don't need to address, to bring this experience and default it on. So the goal of our initial steps in terms of looking at merge, request reviews is to get these webview features that exist um in a defaulted on state, but trying today let us know what you think. Let us know what bugs you're finding or what you're not finding, and that way we're able to address those.

So that's where we're starting um there's a few issues in here that we know some known bugs, and so these will be where we go and start uh with that process.

The other piece of this is we're. Gonna, do a p, a proof of concept for the mr review feature, and so there are some apis and endpoints that we know that are extended from vs code to interact with this and perform comments and post those to a service, and so we just want to get a feel for those apis.

What might work, what might not work and how we can utilize those when we build out a code review type feature inside of the vs code, workflow extension and so um we'll be doing some technical discovery on this. But this is really sort of foundational to that. Next experience we'll we'll get to once we get through the webview work and so uh keep an eye on this one as well I'll link all of these issues down below uh the video, and I will put a calendar link in there.
