Description: There are many different ways to build software and run projects. GitLab's built-in issue boards are a great example of how a single, versatile tool can significantly reduce complexity and maintenance for the user without limiting its capabilities. Furthermore, issue boards can become the missing link for your technical teams and the rest of the project. This talk will cover GitLab Issue Boards features and will introduce various ways to use the boards.

We did a remote meet up last week and let Amir you know reached out, and you know, was interested in doing one that was like more for community members in eight five time zones. It can be hard to find a time that works for both you know like Europe and the AIPAC area. So this is, you know more of an impact friendly time I'm in New York. So it's actually like evening here at 7 o'clock.

So you might hear my kids like scurrying around trying to get ready for bed. Apologies in advance for that, and you know we're doing the you know these remote meetups, obviously because of what's going on in the world right now, and so just you know want to say hopefully all of you or you know, being safe and taking care of yourselves and your neighbors, and you know I wish you all the best as we go through this. You know kind of tough time together.

It's great to you know, have opportunities like this, where you can get together with other folks and just get your mind off of you know things that are going. You know on around us. You know I'm excited for this session tonight so for folks that are kind of new to get lab. I just wanted to give like a 30-second overview. Gate limb is like a complete DevOps platform. You know get lab users which is really cool and he's going to walk us through I get my issue bored. So this is a great you know kind of session for a lot of folks, because I think, if get lab, is really known for our source code management tools and our CI. But this is another kind of amazing.

Okay I'll good morning, Australia and hello, everyone in the world thanks for joining us. This is first time I'm doing the meter. I'm presented I meet up at 9:00 a.m. anymore, so today we're going to talk about give love issue boards. So thank you John for the introduction. He pretty much covered everything I based on Strela and architecting the developer and get luck here. I'm also open source, evangelist and I'm very passionate about a few projects, including gitlab, drupal, bootstrap and docker.

So today, we're gonna cover a few things. Obviously the topic is keyboard, so we're gonna cover them, but we're also going to cover some other features like milestones, labels how we can use the board and also I'll, show you some tips and tricks that I kinda pick up over the years working with developing keyboards. So a few disclaimers, first and foremost, we were talking gonna, give love here, chat and quite a few people said that we need something less technical demos.

Obviously there is a lot of technical material out there, but because a skip love is a full-on devups kind of application there. Obviously, we need some linking tools to connect to the other team members, be the business analysts, project managers, so I thought it would be a good introduction and gentle introduction short and sweet, so kind of less technical features, but also I'm sure some of your board or give level pcaps.

Most of my presentations I do give love I say they about 90. 95 percent cover free features. So, if you don't know about lot more, oh there's actually free and pay features and free features, open source, so I'm mostly covering them, but I would mention actually paid features here and there. Well, it's up to you to actually go and check them out, and if you have an opportunity, please do support, get Lobby. They contribute in the code, though, just become a member.

If you like the features, because I guess more often supported get lot more great features. We're gonna have in the near future. So.

I'll tell you a little story about the boards, so this is how deep love board look and if you haven't seen the board, so there's a lot of colors, oh thanks, but if you join any software project, you probably something like that. So or maybe something like that.

There are a number of tools around the world that actually I'm taking an opportunity to create the tasks, put them in some sort of award and then wish methodology or onion and put together, fridge actually completed and in fact before I was introduced to get loud boards I get so our number from some of them were great, some of them not so great. But what actually surprised me I guess the featuring them. We want to surprise me about people of boards.

Is that how tightly integrated they were moving the code within development features so with a lot of other very popular projects, they usually don't do technical stuff, they don't get the code and I think that's missing one to watch and get love nailed it quite well and that's why every time we start the project if the client is not using now to project management tool or even if they use something for a very long time, I do a quick introduction to get love you get dependent on who you're talking to you get a mixed reaction.

Some people say it's too simple. Some people say I've already used the tool and it has so many great features. Why would you something trance up to today is kind again gentle introduction on what you can do and how we can use the table words so from here on I'll just be present in the demo. If you haven't seen the keyboard interface before, on the left hand side, you have a issues section, and this is what kind of pretty much stick towards till the end of the presentation.

So the first thing you have is a milestones and I already created one milestone: it's called version 0.1, so it's kind of easy. You can go and explore it at the moment you can see. There is only one issue actually been added to this particular milestone. We're gonna add more to them, but it's quite easy to create a milestone. So you can see I called the version 0.1, so something like meaningful, while the product, if I, want to do my first full release.

So a client, maybe as a second sprint I, would go and have a new milestone and called version 1.0. You can select specific dates.

15Th of April to 28th of April. Second sprint called second sprint.

There we go I would be able to see my second milestone so from here. If I look at my milestone, I have one there is actually current and you can see there is one it is coming so already created. The number of issues here and, let's say I want to put all issues related to menu items to the particular milestone, so I'm going to click Edit issues on my main related items, yeah.

It's like particular milestone on the right here.

Go back to my milestones and you can see it says at the moment now: I have a four issues: the in milestone version, one so yeah, then start open and unassigned. So I took my four issues for specific issues.

Well now, let me introduce you to the project, so the project is actually built in the furniture catalog. So if you get confused and just see me clicking around the screen, so what we're trying to do created the 20 issues- circle. Okay, you know the furniture website where you can go and browse furniture catalog. So at the moment, I just moved the four menus I wanted to create version 1.0, but we're gonna stick with version 0.1, which is basically creating default structure and.

Pushing website so this is milestones so the next thing before we'll jump to the issues and boards are labels again, quick introductions. Moc already, you can see. I have a number called farm labels here, but when you create a new project, when you start a new project, if you even know labels and creative level actually give you an opportunity to create the default tables.

So here you can see. I have a purple category which covers back-end development. Configuration develops if I want to add something like a front-end development. I can create a new label here so same color. Now.

You can see a front-end development to my configuration and DevOps well see. There is a yellow category which covers data entry, data structure, documentation blue category, which says which stage the current issue is and I also left.

Three for add categories which actually came from the default list of keyblob would recommend when, if you create the default labels, so again that nice and simple what you can also do, you can start specific entries that works here, prioritized it would move to priority list, so you can actually have prioritized labels and less pair of types levels, we'll just keep them in the other labels section all of them at the moment.

We can move to actually creating a new issue, so I wouldn't click issues list.

You can see all my 20 issues were created here and some of the issues are actually added to milestones, which can be again just trends. You can see they already say. Oh it's an upcoming string. So from this particular list you can actually sort issues by.

Assignee milestone, release label and so on and so forth. You.

Bed website domain, something that there I haven't created before so we can actually, instead of describing something like what the name is.

Chieko may some simple description. You can also do new items here, including the checklist which I really like, so they can curse you to the main.

Again, I'll leave everything else in touch at the moment and see the finisher, but once we create our issue, you can see it's nice and simple. That's three check boxes, so, let's say, or in purchased domain, so I tipped off one thing, so I got one of three items. Actually, if you look at the items in this category here so I'll see number 21, which is add website domain, it will actually tell so one of three tasks are actually completed.

So one neat feature which is kind of hidden at the moment, and it used to be paid feature as well on the bottom of your issues list now, there's a link called email. You new issue to the project. This is a specific link. You can actually be a click on it. It will provide you the unique email and you can give it to your client and your client can start creating tasks by email, which is quite handy, I mean for some clients function to know.

Oh, you can actually give it to a developer. So if someone is more used to creating issues from email, I want right click email. You can do that I'm. Looking a male mission to the project.

Let's go to our issue and set the fuse here and then we'll actually move to the board. So you can see. I can assign this particular issue to myself. I can choose other people who can be on this project so on this particular project. There are two develop assigned to me. So I can a the milestone here so different. They wanted to be done for version 0.1 I can do it, I'm trickin to date and label.

So I'm not gonna enter a due date because I already have a mouse, so you can imagine if you're not trying in project milestone, which is a little small project, will be actually using them. You can go and change it. You date set a specific: do they actually have SSL renewal certificates for some of the clients for actually don't have a thematic renewal.

You just I would go and set up specific date. Then it would warn me, maybe something like 10 days before the SSL renewal. So that's one of the use cases you can just worry. Do you take remind you a week or two in advance? Do you need to do something again? Lame-O's already look at the limo, so one of the things well, thanks: I have its DevOps and I already start working on it. So I also have here so either two labels. When you click off the labels, you can save the labels.

You can also switch both notifications if you don't need more notifications for this specific issue for yourself, the good thing about having the notifications, when, if you tagged inside the issue or if you tagged as actually as I need you'll get an email once you mentioned for once the issues being updated, so you can actually click reply to the email and your reply would appear on the bottom here, which is another excellent feature and a lot of clients like that as well.

So they can actually reply to the email and give you the bit more details or answer. Your questions. Keep in mind. Give up has restrictions on the size of the images. So if you email something very large like large, PDF or something it might not necessarily be attached to the issue, so that's one of the caveat of all the taxes here from the email, so you can actually have an interception team.

So, finally, the boards.

The board, so you can see the first board I opened, was just development board again, gilad will give you a if you didn't know what to do. The first board you create. It will give you an ability to create the default board to give you two two labels, something like development review, something very similar here, and you can start with a brand new board, as suggested by a big loud. If you won't give a suggestion and so create a new board here,.

You'll get something like this so open and closed category. Obviously we were having issues in a closed category, but open contains all our issues so out when you want the the first thing you can do. You can actually rearrange lis issues here right here, that's kind of nice. So it has this great feature. If you have an overwhelming number of labels, you can go and switch off labels as long and just concentrate on task, and you can also add lists.

So if I go back to my original board, which is a development who have in development and in the review for some project, I have a development stage and production environment. So if I want to create all Street environments, it can actually go and modify label and sand or I actually create the label from here. So you can say at least.

If you didn't find something.

You can click create project label from here. It's like a collar and say in stage.

So it's selected to have in stage and if added in stage automatically here, I can easily drag into in stage after in development so and before production interview. Obviously, because we have column, you can actually easily drug in job specification. So if my domain will be in stage in review, I can drag and drop here. I can click on the name of the task and go specifically to the task, and you can see that I actually moved it from in stage in development.

What if I'll go back to the board? I can? Actually, if you don't click on the title, but click anywhere else. There is a site feature which gives you a quick access to specific tasks on your right. This is where you can modify it time tracking. Do you date, labels as well?

So if you wanna add something like documentation or infrastructure here.

So the next feature would be a search, so you can actually on a specific board same as in the list of issues you can search specific tests. So if no one ever is tasked with only specific level, I would say, label equals and then I'll go on infrastructure and and I would normally say only infrastructure issues same you can go and find.

Assignee equals so I have only one task for the paid feature. You would actually be able to save this filters, but quick tip. You can actually save this URL in the bookmark and it will be the same as having saved filter here. So, if you're using free version, you can still save because URL actually completely copies your filter.

Now, from here.

Okay, here we are so, as you can see, most of our tasks are actually unlabeled. So this is another thing we can here, so we can actually outright a lot of stuff to in development and getting development that straight away.

Tasks here and during a few issues here without inside there go so yeah in development.

Us you can see, the label is here, as you saw before, you can do it from the list as well. So you can click each. You select a particular task assigned a milestone, change the SME and even you know, assign stairs. If you want to do about closure of the task, you can do it from here as well.

Well, let me cover me, though, so it doesn't matter what you're on so it can be a Kanban board or scrum board. You can always. There are few use cases for the board, so in this particular visit in standard view. This is what I used to use on every projects and have open issues. You have its first stage of the development or at least, and then you have a closed issues, but another way you can run the board and I created the board cold categories.

So categories actually has back-end development configuration DevOps I also created the category if you're one were called front-end development, so I click Add list here and search for the front-end development here now, I can quickly if I'm just started the project quickly resort. The issues based in particular can occurs again just before I'll show you the list how it looks at the moment.

So here's a list, our issues most of the tasks don't have any labels. If I sit on the board here and I have create categories default continent on will go to configuration, can approach, data structure, button development project for content configuration create landing page. Together here you can go and sort your tasks by a specific category and then, if you look at the Refresh board here, you can see a lot of maples actually being added nice and quickly. So even you know spending last one couple of minutes. We can have all the projects right here and your board for development is ready to use, as I said before, you can go and create unlimited number of words.

Here again, this is was actually quite recent change that if word used a different feature so to open-source, so everyone can create multiple boards for a specific project.

There is also a couple of other plate features. You can actually create the columns based on the user and based on milestones, so you can go to implementation and read more about those kind of use. Cases for boards.

Also few other things I wanted to cover. If you go talk to specific issue website the main- and this is featured problem more interesting for developers, but it's actually here for everyone, so you can use kind of slack body tags, so you can add and remove different parameters for a specific task using slash. So here, for example, if you want to add GU day or if you want to mark it as a duplicate issue, you can do the same in two days, something like that. We got actually add label to the specific tasks.

What I, what I, usually use the slash tactics were construction, estimating the issue so if I stay mad at this issue, rotate me three hours: I can alright estimate three hours. I spend already one hour but purchasing in the main and configuring. The name servers ice on our click comment and you can see the time tracking on the right hand, side update it's saying there. I'm not going to demonstrate the feature because it's very developed oriented, but when you create more do request via quote, you can actually specify the description which issues enclosed automatically. So once the merchant class is closed, it can close number of issues with some, which is awesome.

Quite a nice feature. So I guess this is a quick overview of this issue section one last thing: it is a quick demo actually description which new features are coming to core. So, as I mentioned before that I've made features for me, platinum, three features and some of the paid features eventually making its way to become a free features and making to open source few items. I showed you today like email to this particular mode to create an issue and multiple keyboards for project. They used to be a pretty chips and actually became free features.

So couple days ago there was a board post on him, love actually applying 18 key features that they move into open source. Very very soon. There are four of them that actually related to deep love words.

So first one is related issues. So soon you will be able to say this issue related to this issue and a lot of issue tracking systems to that and she paid member. You can do that and give love, but this one is actually going open-source pitterson, the second one- and this is one of my favorites I guess- is exporting specific issues. So you can export in choosing CSV, and that was a paid feature and a lot of people could estimate tasks to the times there, but they couldn't export them so from I.

It's called the focus mode, so you'll be able to click on the focus button, which is in the right hand, side and expand the border from screen to actually see the overview of all your tasks and the last feature which I actually just found out about I never knew it was there. It's full service desk. So soon you will be able to activate service desk. You can see here on your project and you will be able to provide the clients with a specific email to send email to your service desk.

So if your your company or you are number of clients or well in support maintenance conference, they will be able to email your issues directly and you can use Google up also as a service this and that's going to come to the issues. Canada.

Okay, so quick summary of what we cover today, so we go through get lab boards and the different elements of name, including milestones, label those ten issues and how we can search for them. We'll also cover the usage of different usage of the board. We can have a different perspective on the project.
