To know each other and then we can go into the more of the logistics of uh of the hackathon and.

Being a divinity operator um for quite some time um now, my my role at gitlab is to try to.

Actually, help drive more contributions towards gitlab in a way that also is.

Rewarding and valuable for contributors, so it's not just like. We need your contributions.

uh Well, so it's really important for you to have a rewarding experience and something and get some.

A

Skills or experience based on what you want, I'm based in berlin, uh germany, you know I'm greek.

And I love italian food. I was telling marco earlier it's my favorite cuisine, but marco is.

Biased because he's italian, so I will would like to I- can go from the list here on zoom who's. Next.

The gitlab heroes and yeah, I'm mainly when I contributing I mainly focus on the time tracking.

Features, but also I poke around here and there on documentation and other changes that can, if I find.

Something I can take a look and fix it and I'm not a web developer, so everyone can contribute and.

um All right so hackathon hackathon starts at 2 august 2 until the 9th of august noon at ubc.

Time so it started like um three hours. um Sorry, one hour ago, if I'm not mistaken or two hours ago,.

uh Two hours ago, two hours ago, I'm in berlin, so it's plus two so yeah.

Started two hours ago, it's really simple: you don't have to sign up anywhere to participate.

A

In the hackathon you just need to contribute and how to do that we have a here. We have a table.

A

With uh some issues, um something that we saw seen working in the past was like organizing.

A

The issues available for contributing based on five purpose areas, security, content, back-end.

A

Technical writing and website slash handbook website. Slash handbook is.

A

Like this page here on the hackathon page or about.gitlab.com, this is like the web properties.

Oh, as you can see, we have already 14 mr submitted so far. The first two hours, that's great.

A

Now, when it comes to finding something to contribute to, there are thousands of.

A

Issues so there are different ways you can begin. Normally the issues in regards to ux and content.

A

More more include more details on the expected outcome that you would like. um They would like to.

A

For asia to have um and yeah are really more well they're extremely.

A

Well, detailed and also ux sometimes is, if you have some experience with javascript with html. It's.

A

Relatively easier to to start contributing, so you can find on the qualifying issues here, I'll.

A

Go I'm going to explain more about the qualifying decision a bit. You can find two categories to.

A

Areas, one is like all issues and issues for new contributors. If you click here on the.

A

On the on the left, you can have all the issues, and here issues for new contributors is is are.

A

Issues who the team, for example, the optimized group in this case, has identified as easy to begin.

A

With now, when it comes to all these different groups um in case that you're not familiar their.

A

Gitlab is consistent by different stages and groups, so you can uh click on the contributing.

A

Guide here that gets you to the top. Let me open a new tab and the gitlab architecture.

Here, especially, the github architecture is going to help you understand more about um how gitlab is.

Structured the different component components of git lab. Well, let me download further down.

And different like to the left here, there are also different guides on how you're going to do.

Omnibus youtube pages, get locked runner all hell charts. So it's it gives you more uh more ideas.

um So when it comes to the development guide, sorry I clicked from here I clicked from contributing.

To the lab guide, which gonna take you to the development guide, and you can walk you through how.

To set up your development environment here, there are two ways you can set up using ttk offline.

A

Or you can do it by using kit bot kit was, is um you can use git port for most of the contributions.

A

For sure not for contributing to security depot, what it does you can contribute like.

A

You don't have to install anything on the computer through the browser, so it's really simple.

A

How it works you go to, for example,.

Gitlab.Com, let's go to you, go to a repository at gitlab here, um let's go here.

Actually now I'm gonna go to the website. For example,.

And from here see the git port, you can change it to web id or keyboard. I want.

Keyboard, so if I press the button here and you pop up with keyboard, you can log in, of course.

um I'm gonna start setting up a development environment within my browser, so I don't.

Have to install tdk, ah I mean the website doesn't need the cdk, but it's the same with.

For example, going to another report, you can do it with any repo you can use like.

Also, some general guidelines on how to open nmr what is going to happen when you open mmr.

Straightforward these are part of our office articles that we've been having in the past.

Weeks now something else about qualifying issues. uh What is the qualifying issue um so the way that.

We actually count contributions. um We announced that the the winners is through how many points.

A

You have uh collected these are the prices. So, okay, sorry, let me go back. We have five contribution.

A

Areas for five contribution areas, we're gonna, get the mars, uh for example, if hit uh he created like.

A

One, mr for content, one mr per backhand and one mr for deck. Writing technical writing. He has three.

A

Marks but there are in three different particular areas: different categories and these mars need to.

A

Contribute to an existing issue to be counted for against five points per mr. So if marco, for example,.

A

Opens nmr that is not linked to an existing issue, then his mark counts. One point not that.

A

It's not important, it is important, but we're trying to um we're trying to.

A

Help people contribute towards things that already existing there um and also it's also helped us.

A

uh Against um abusive behaviors in the past and had people just like opening.

A

A lot of mrs just like to get the points and win the prices, so it was not fair. So another reason.

A

For like having this point system is like make it fair for everyone, so that's where you have.

A

Five contribution areas, um so you need to have nmr linked to an issue um that you're contributing and.

A

Once this amount is merged, um we're gonna, this is gonna count um towards the prices so by the.

A

End of the hackathon, we will be well what happened here by the end of the hackathon. Let me we will be.

Collect calculating all the points, this is for the previous hackathon and we'll be announcing the.

A

Winners, just like that so for the frontend area for the backend area, for the technical writing.

A

Area website area- um and it's important because I got this question a lot of times like how you.

A

Identify whether this this mrs belongs to the bucket or the front end, it depends on the issue.

A

That you're solving, for example here if the issue belongs into the front of the um table, then your.

A

Mrs, even if it's a backend, mr, if you're a mars like, are related to this issue, they're gonna count.

A

Towards the front um degree deadlines uh all mrs needs to be submitted by the 9th of august uh 12.

A

Utc, which is 2 9 9, am noon, and then you need to allow us like for one month to review your mrs and.

A

Calculate the winners, so we gonna go and review all of the mars and trying to merge them all.

A

I review them all within the time frame um if something is not reviewed on time. Just you can.

A

Ping me sometimes in the past, when we saw we were seeing that there were some delays, we extended the.

A

Timeline for a bit for a week, but normally you know more traditionally, we've been managed to.

A

uh If you all have mars on time, these are the hackathon prizes. um The grand prize is.

A

Like one hundred dollars gift card for you for the upper swag, so we definitely have.

A

A brand um refresh, so we have a new shiny logo and a lot of new stuff on the shop. So.

A

The grand prize is going to be the people who prefer contribution area that managed to gather.

A

The most points um here there are some of the ideas in get. I really want the summit.

A

Mark I might conclude myself as well to get this grant rights because I really want this sonic mug.

A

So yeah uh the second place individual with the most point gathered water bottle and our.

A

T-Shirt with a new t-shirt- and it's really important- everyone was with a merged. Mr even.

You know if you have only one mermaid, everyone will get at least a teacher. uh Our mother gitlab.

Is like everyone can contribute marco said it as well he's not the developer.

But still contributing so there are a lot of other a lot of content contribution, opportunities.

And when it comes to that, um something to mention on the website, for example, is that.

We don't have issues because they're not issued for the website, but that's why we always count.

The website website handbook contribution area. It has like every mr counts, the same. So it's a.

A

Matter of who is going to open the most mars when it comes to the website and hackathon.

um What else oh yeah office article uh in two days from now we're gonna have a healthy.

Article, it's like a regular call where we're gonna be here with some engineers.
