A
Hi,
I'm
jc
bander
on
the
learning
and
development
team
and
I'm
joined
by
brittany,
rhode,
senior
manager,
total
rewards
here
at
get
lab,
and
today
we're
going
to
be
talking
about
career
development.
So
brittany,
could
you
talk
to
us
a
little
bit
about
what
your
career
development
has
looked
like
to
date?.
B
Yeah
I'd
be
happy
to
so.
I
have
been
at
gitlab
for
about
five
years
now,
just
over
that
and
I'm
just
returning
off
of
my
second
maternity
leave
at
get
lab.
So
my
career
development
has
been
multifaceted
in
the
sense
that
I
was
the
first
people
hire
in
our
group
when,
at
the
time
I
was
interviewed,
and
it
was
hey,
we
need
somebody
to
come.
Do
people
things
and
that
become
much
more
became
much
more
well-defined
over
time,
but
I
was
able
to
start
growing
within
gitlab
as
get
labs
scaled
by
taking
on
at
first.
B
It
was
a
little
bit
of
everything,
so
interviewing
onboarding
issues
sending
out
contracts.
You
know
compensation
all
of
the
different
parts
when
you're
a
little
bit
smaller
of
an
org
and
then,
as
we
started
to
scale
as
a
company.
My
role
scaled.
B
You
know
with
the
company
in
becoming
a
little
bit
more
niche
in
each
different
facet,
so
it
started
to
have
you
know
in
total
rewards
now
I
started
to
become
a
little
bit
more
narrow
with
each
career
development
opportunity
to
move
farther
and
farther
into
being
a
subject
matter,
expert
in
total
rewards,
and
so
part
of
that
was
an
important
lesson
that
I
learned
for
career
development
was
not
being
afraid
to
give
up
your
legos.
B
I
read
a
really
interesting
article
about
that
when
I
was
a
bit
more
junior
in
my
career,
where
it's
okay
to
hand
off
things
as
your
company's
scaling,
you
know
you're
not
defined
by
how
many
priorities
or
task
lists
that
you
have
or
the
scope
of
all
the
different
things
that
you
do,
because
not
one
person
cannot
do
that
all
as
they
grow
and
scale,
and
so,
as
I
became
more
niche
into
total
rewards,
then
that
became
my
subject
matter
expertise.
You
know
I
didn't
do
interviewing
anymore.
A
B
A
B
Legos
that,
I
think
is
amazing,
is
to
figure
out
what
you
want
to
focus
on
and
where
your
passion
and
priorities
are
and
where
you're
not
passionate
or
that
isn't
your
priority.
How
can
somebody
else
come
in
and
help
the
business
to
grow
and
develop
so
that
the
business
can
continue
to
grow
and
be
really
successful
in
all
those
different?
You
know
subgroups.
A
Yeah,
that's
awesome,
that's
a
great
point
so
in
that
what
intentional
steps
have
you
taken
throughout
your
career
to
get
where
you
are
today.
B
I
think
it's
being
really
deliberate
in
your
career,
and
so
you
know
I've
asked
for
informal
mentorship,
formal
mentorship,
every
leader
that
I've
had
in
my
career
in
general,
but
at
get
love
as
well,
whether
it
was
somebody
that
I
got
along
really
well
with
that
was
my
manager,
maybe
somebody
that
I
didn't
get
along
with,
as
well
as
my
manager
learning
something
from
each
of
them
to
help
me
grow
in
you
know
who
I
want
to
be
as
a
manager
as
a
leader
in
an
organization,
but
also
who
I
want
to
be
as
an
individual
contributor
in
an
organization.
B
B
How
can
I
you
know,
gain
knowledge
on
what
I
want
to
do,
or
maybe
what
I
don't
want
to
do
as
a
leader
or
manager,
so
that
you
know,
as
as
you
start
to
you,
know,
continue
to
develop
you're,
really
intentional
and
deliberate
about
what
you
want
to
do
and
who
you
want
to
be,
and
I
think
mentorship
was
one
of
the
most
pivotal
pieces
for
me,
whether
that
was
you
know,
formal,
through
manager
or
through
a
mentorship
program,
whether
that
was
informal.
Just
talking
to
your
peers
and
understanding.
B
You
know
what
different
opportunities
are
out
there.
I
also,
while
I've
been
at
get
lab,
pursued
my
master's
program
so
that
I
can
have
additional
academic
education
behind
what
I
do.
So
I
I
come
from
a
math
background
originally
which
correlates
to
compensation
and
total
rewards,
but
it's
in
a
direct
line,
and
so
I
got
my
and
my
master's
in
professional
studies
with
a
concentration
in
compensation
and
benefits
so
that
I
could
make
sure
that
I
had
that
subject
matter,
expertise
as
that
was
something
I
was
becoming
more
and
more
passionate
about.
A
B
And
it's
also
laterally,
you
know
as
as
different
career
tracks,
develop
as
a
company
grows
and
scales
and
git
level,
I'm
sure
continue
to
grow
and
scale.
You
know
what
are
the
different
things
that
you're
interested
in
you
know.
At
one
point
I
was
doing
a
lot
of
hris
work,
which
is
now
moving
into.
A
Yeah,
definitely
that's
awesome,
so
I
thought
that
was
great
advice,
but
do
you
have
any
additional
advice
for
team
members
that
are
looking
to
grow
their
career
development.
B
I
think
it's
to
be
the
owner
of
your
own
career
development.
You
know
your
manager
is
there
to
help
guide
you
and
I
sort
of
think
about
this
as
you're
driving
a
ship
like
I'm
the
captain
of
my
own
career
development
ship,
nobody
else
can
drive
it
for
me.
Nobody
else
has
the
license
to
be
able
to
do
that,
I'm
the
one
who
has
to
do
it,
but
there
can
be
somebody
on
board.
B
You
know
you
might
assume
that
your
manager
can
help
you
or
tell
you
exactly
what
you
need
to
do
next,
when
in
fact
it's
there's
so
many
different
avenues
that
somebody
can
take
in
their
career,
that
being
able
to
talk
to
your
manager,
about
where
your
passions
lie,
what
you're
interested
in
and
also
what
you're
not
interested
in
doing
and
it's
okay
to
say
what
you
want
and
what
you
don't
want
to
help
your
manager
or
leader
to
be
able
to
narrow
down
hey.
This
is
what
you
you
know.
B
A
That's
really
great
advice,
thanks
for
sharing
that
yeah,
so
my
pleasure
yeah,
those
were
all
the
questions
I
had
for
you
today,
so
I
just
want
to
say
thanks
for
taking
the
time
to
chat
with
me.
I
think
this
is
going
to
be
really
helpful
for
get
lab
team
members
looking
to
grow
their
career
awesome.
Thank
you.
So
much
facey.
