heard

term

the
tropical
Indian,
a
podcast,
well
yeah
and
it
wasn't
necessary
term.
But
what
he
was
saying
was
location
independence

not
location,
ambiguity,

Technology,
publications,
where
that
record
was
earned,
the
career
has
evolved
a
bit
span.
The
gamut
of
marketing,
comms,
operational
leadership,
and
my
role
here
at
get
Latin
now
is
head
of
remote
is
probably
the
most
cross-functional
role
at
the
entire
company.
It
dabbles
in
operations
dabbles
in
learning
and
development
and
marketing
communications
as
well,
but
a
bit
on
their
on
the
record
yeah.
It
was
17,000
posts
over
four
years
which,
if
you
do,
the
math,
is
an
article
published
every
two
hours,
24/7
365
for
four
consecutive
years
and.

Is
insane
it
was
about
six
million
words
in
four
years
and
obviously
I've
kept
writing
I.
Don't
have
it's
a
little
harder
to
keep
track
of
now
because
the
articles
are
spread
over
so
many
places,
but
I
think
it's
around
twenty-five
to
thirty
thousand
articles
around
ten
million
words,
but
the
prolific
part
of
that
record
is
the
part.
That's
going
to
be
hard
to
beat
because
the
time
element
obviously.

In
140
years
they
could
write
more
than
17,000
articles
read
to
do
it
at
that.
Clip
is
going
to
be
hard
and
when
people
after
I
left
and
gadget
people
asked.
How
did
you
do
that?
And
it
was
an
awesome
question,
because
it
enabled
me
to
talk
about
remote
at
a
time
when
it's
still
a
niche,
but
it
was
really
niche
when
this
was
happening,
and
my
point
was
look
I
contributed
to
my
job
without
a
commute
for
four
years.

Memoir
of
what
it
takes
to
earn
a
world
record
in
four
years,
while
working
remotely
and
while
I
was
running,
this
record
I
actually
traveled
to
all
50
US
states
in
over
50
countries.
So,
instead
of
putting
off
the
bucket
list,
while
a
la
cama
accomplish
something
at
work,
I
actually
did
both.
At
the
same
time,
it
would
have
been
fundamentally
impossible
without
remote
without
the
ability
to
go
anywhere
and
integrate
work
into
life.
It
would
have
been
impossible
why
it's
partly
about
that
and
partly
about
here,
are
all
the
tips
and
tricks.

That's
partly
why
I
wrote
the
book,
but
it's
been
a
fun
fun
journey.
Man
working
remotely
back
in
those
days
was
much
much
more
difficult.
Now
we're
so
spoiled.
We
have
near
ubiquitous
snowy,
we
have
zoom,
we
have
slack.
We
have
a
society
that
understands
digital
communication.
We've
come
a
long
way
and
I
think
the
the
next
huge
wave
of
this
is
is
going
to
happen.
We're
watching
history,
unfold,
yeah.

Every
day
was
different
and
that's
one
of
the
things
I
try
to
encourage
people
now
that
are
suddenly
remotes
like
you
might
want
to
stick
to
a
routine
initially,
because
if
you
do
too
much
it's
just
jarring
and
you
you
don't.
You
can't
really
hone
in
on
the
variables
of
what
works
and
what
doesn't
work,
but
I
coined
the
term
nonlinear
workday,
and
this
really
defined
my
life
for
those
four
years
where
every
day
was
fundamentally
different.
Number
one
I
recognized
that
my
peak
productivity
hours
were
not
9:00
to
5:00.

With
how
I
like
to
work
so,
even
though
I'm,
mostly
on
the
east
coast
of
the
US
I
work
way
later
in
the
day,
the
reason
I
do
this
is
I
appreciate
being
outside
I
appreciate,
sunlight,
so
I
would
much
rather
be
outside
and
fulfill
that
part
of
my
life,
while
I
can
and
then
I
really
have
no
issue
working
when
it's
dark
outside,
because
what
am
I
gonna
do
with
that
anyway,
right
think
about
remote.
Is
anyone
can
use
the
perk
differently
depending
on
what
you
prefer?

Some
people
may
love
nightlife,
so
they
want
to
knock
all
their
work
out
in
the
morning
so
that
they
can
do
that
in
the
evening,
and
it's
totally
fine,
so
yeah
every
day
was
different.
I
worked
different
hours
every
single
day,
and
the
only
reason
that
worked
is
I
worked
in
organizations
that
were
keen
on
asynchronous
communication.
We
did
everything
we
could
to
eliminate
as
many
meetings
as
possible.
You
want
to
eliminate
the
knee
for
synchronicity
the
further.

Can
get
down
that
road?
You
reach
this
utopia
of
fully
asynchronous.
That
is
when
glory
road
is,
is
unlocked.
It
takes
a
lot
of
work
and
there's
only
so
much
an
individual
can
do
without
the
backing
of
a
workplace
to
unlock
that
atmosphere,
and
this
is
why
you
see
so
many
so
many
remote
errs
end
up
working
for
themselves,
because.

To
find
organizations
that
are
fully
bought
in
on
that
mentality,
and
they
they
at
some
point
hit
a
point
where
they
just
need
more
freedom
and
flexibility,
but
coming
out
of
kovat
I.
Think
a
lot
of
companies
are
gonna
embrace
this
in
a
new
way.
When
you
have
tens
of
millions
of
people,
I
kind
of
taste.
The
freedoms
of
this
is
what
life
can
look
like
when
you
don't
have
a
commute,
even
in
some
optimal
conditions,
I
mean
we're
in
quarantine
in
isolation
and
people
are
still
finding
the
benefits.

10
years,
that's
what
I've
been
saying.
Yes,
ten
years
from
years,
man
just
like
just
like
that,
where
we're
already
there
it's
wild
this
conversation
six
months
ago,
the
audience
would
have
been
fairly
narrow
and
it
would
have
been
a
very
moat
of
vocal
minority
that
fully
got
it.
They
understand
the
value
of
autonomy,
they
understand
the
value
of
being
a
manager
of
one,
but
then
there's
a
lot
of
other
people
that
just
think.
Oh,
this
is
kind
of
pie
in
the
sky,
it'll,
never
work
for
me
or
my
job
can't
be
done
remotely
now.

Suddenly
that
takes
on
a
completely
different
tenor.
Now
the
idea
has
been
planted
in
every
mind
that
hey
what
what
if
I
can
do
this
from
somewhere
other
than
the
office
and
I
think
it
has
greatly
democratized
the
conversation
around
remote.
Now
everyone
going
into
a
future
job
interview
can
say
what
is
your
stance
on
workplace
flexibility
and
they
have
every
right
for
that
organization
to
have
an
answer
to
me.

That's
massive
remote
went
from
this
thing
where,
for
me
personally,
I
had
to
build
up
a
long
portfolio
of
work,
proving
that
I
could
do
things
remotely
and
then
I
would
apply
for
roles
that
I
knew
I
would
be
great
at
and
they
were
based
in
New,
York,
San,
Francisco,
big
places
and
then
I
would
get
at
some
point
in
the
interview
process
and
say
hey
it's
clear
that
this
is
gonna
work
culturally.
This
is
gonna
work
professionally.
This
is
gonna
work,
but
look
I
don't
want
to
permanently
relocate
to
New,
York
or
San
Francisco.

What
can
we
work
out
and
then
there's
a
whole
process
that
has
to
have
yeah?
This
is
super
inefficient.
This
is
like
one
person
this
has
to
happen
at
scale
with
all
these
people.
All
of
that
has
been
broken
down
thanks
to
Co,
but
now
everyone
can
enter
that
conversation
with
a
much
stronger
footing
on.
Tell
me
about
what
your
workplace
flexibility
situation
looks
like
and
yeah
to
me,
man,
I
dub.
The
future
is
bright
because
of
that
it's.

It's
crazy
how
it
takes
something
like
that
to
like
just
like
we're
seeing
in
America
to
like
it
takes
certain
events
to
happen
that
really
progress
and
accelerate
something
that
was
inevitable
anyway,
but
just
to
get
it's
like.
Almost
like
the
social
mind,
Sheriff
of
groupthink
and
like
everybody
finally
coming
around
to
it,
needs
some
sort
of
push
and
I'm
sorry
go
ahead.

I
was
just
gonna
say
this
is
our
century's
assembly
line
when
the
assembly
line
came
into
being
in
the
early
1900's.
It
rocked
the
manufacturing
world.
All
of
a
sudden,
tens
of
millions
of
people
looked
at
manufacturing
and
thought.
Oh,
we
can
fundamentally
do
this
differently.
We
don't
always
have
to
do
it.
The
way
we've
done
it.
This
is
that
moment
for
this
century,.

All
of
that
is
public,
because
none
of
that
should
be
a
surprise
to
many
companies
go
through
the
interview
process
and
then
on
the
second
or
third
week
of
like
oh,
this
is
what
it's
like
to
work
here
and
then
you
have
spent
six
months
recruiting
someone
only
to
lose
them
three
months
later,
because
it
was
never
gonna
be
out
of
it.
So
I
think
it'll
be
good.
If
you
just
no
outright
look,
there's
gonna
be
some
people
that
prefer
the
rigidity
of
the
office.
This
isn't
us
versus
them
thing.

This
is
just
a
more
inclusive
way
to
give
people
choice.
I
think
there
will
be
some
people
that
still
want
to
wake
up
every
day,
put
on
a
four
piece
suit,
get
on
a
public
transit
system
and
do
their
thing
there's
nothing
wrong
with
that.
But
it's
better
if
they're
just
forthcoming
about
that's
how
it's
gonna
be
I.
Think
the
deeper
question
here
is
what
about
companies
that
are
reluctantly
allowing
remote
because
they
kind.

Like
they
have
to,
maybe
because
the
office
isn't
fully
safe
to
reopen
or
if
they're
gonna
have
to
spend
millions
of
dollars
to
reaaargh
attacked
the
office
for
social
distancing,
maybe
they
shot
one
or
two
of
them
down,
so
they
have
a
subset
of
the
company
that
now
has
to
work
outside
of
the
office.
The
great
litmus
test
for
me
is
going
to
be
companies
that
say
that
we
allow
remote
and
then
companies
that
say
we
support
remote,
there's
a
big
difference
in
the
terminology
there
and
you're
gonna
feel
it
on
both
sides
of
it.

Mm-Hmm
I've
read
it's
hard
because
you
fundamentally
have
to
employee
experiences
and
the
on-site
experience
and
the
off-site
experience
and
people
groups
have
a
reckoning
ahead
of
them
in
trying
to
level
those
they
will,
by
their
very
nature,
never
be
totally
level,
but
it
will
now
be
the
fundamental
responsibility
of
a
group
to
try
to
keep
them
level.
This
is
a
net
new
responsibility.
This
has
never
happened
before
people
have
asked
me
like
what
does
the
head
of
remote?
Why
have
I
never
heard
of
it?

Well,
dial
back
a
bit
when
you
think
about
the
the
culmination
of
the
chief
diversity
officer
at
one
point
in
time:
diversity
and
inclusion
and
belonging
was
just
a
line
item
on
the
chief
HR
officer,
the
chief
people
officer.
It
was
just
one
of
the
many
things
they
did
and
then
at
some
point
people
recognized
hold
on.
We
need
to
put
intention
ality
behind
this.
This
is
a
significant
and
important
thing.

But
one
of
the
biggest
things
I
appreciate
appreciate
about
you
as
a
person
is
that
you
have
an
openness
and
a
willingness
to
talk
about
things
in
your
life
that
are
personal
I,
think
it
gives
people
a
sense
of
authenticity
that
people
want
to
be
around
right
and
and
I
in
a
similar
way.
If
you
were
to
look
at
my
person
with
AI,
you
could
see
me
openly
discussed,
quitting
alcohol
or
having
weight
problems
and
in
past
parts
my
life
failures.
A
Things
like
that
and
I
wanted
to
use
this
opportunity
of
us
talking
together
to
dive
into
some
of
those
personal
things,
because
obviously
the
remote
stuff
is
really
cool,
but
I'm
curious
to
know
as
a
man
like
and
as
a
guy
who's
leaving
this
company
and
as
the
person
that
you
are
like.
Why
do
you
put
so
much
of
your
life
on
the
internet?
For
others
to
see
great.

Very
personal
to
me
for
a
lot
of
reasons:
I
live
in
a
very
rural
place
in
North
Carolina
that
without
remote,
I
fundamentally
could
not
live
here,
and
if
I
couldn't
live
here,
I
couldn't
be
near.
My
family
and
my
wife's
family
and
I
couldn't
be
near.
Our
adopted
sons,
birth,
mother,
I
couldn't
be
near
community
and
neighbor,
and
a
church
family
and
all
of
these
people.
That
mean
something
to
me.
We
are
communal.
Relational
beings
relationships
are
the
bedrock
of
life.

What
has
happened
to
that?
Kovat
has
enabled
people
to
get
a
bit
introspective
because
they've
been
forced
to
stop
marching
into
those
four
walls
that
have
defined
them
for
so
long
and
now
they
have
this
awesome
pause
and
this
awesome
opportunity
to
ask
themselves:
Who
am
I
really.
What
is
the
balance
between
work
and
life?
Where
is
my
identity
rooted?
Have
I
been
neglecting
parts
of
my
life
that
I
should
maybe
I
should
call
my
neighbor.

Maybe
I
should
call
my
parents
like
how
long
has
it
been
since
I've
done
these
things,
and
that
may
sound
a
little
silly
in
flippant,
but
it's
big.
It's
really
important,
because
what
you
bring
to
work,
who
you
bring
to
work?
It
starts
with
those
relationships
and
the
stronger.
Those
are
the
better
you're
gonna
be
at
work.

So
what
makes
me
me
first
of
all,
I'm
a
husband
and
I'm
an
adopted
father,
my
wife
and
I
adopted
a
newborn
at
birth
in
2018,
and
it
has
fundamentally
been
the
most
transformational
experience
of
our
lives
and,
what's
crazy
about
that
journey.
Is
that
in
the
midst
of
it,
I
had
a
career
change,
a
job
change
and
I
had
one
offer
at
a
remote
company
and
one
offer
that
would
move
me
3,000
miles
away
to
California
and
I.
Wanted
that
role
really
really
bad
I
knew
the
hiring
manager.

They
were
in
a
weird
spot
and
it
was
one
that
I
could
see
the
value
of
being
there,
but
I
just
knew
that
I
couldn't
be
there
in
that
season
of
my
life,
because
this
was
more
important
and
that
was
one
of
the
hardest
calls
I
made
when
I
I
called
the
hiring
manager
there
and
said
that,
and
she
said
you
are
absolutely
doing
the
right
thing.
Had
you
told
me
anything
else,
I
would
have
been
disappointed
and
so
life
is
long
and
relationships
are
meaningful,
so
we're
gonna
stay
in
touch.

Has
this
way
of,
if
you
really
step
out
in
faith
and
you
you
are
true
to
who
you
are
and
you
let
those
elements
lead,
there's
some
amazing
kind
of
confirmations
that
happen
on
this
is
this
is
the
right
way
you
did.
You
did
good,
you
stood
true
to
who
you
were
and
then
the
rest
of
these
things
can
gonna
fall
in
place.
A
lot
of
people
haven't
had
those
opportunities,
because
they've
been
so
rooted
in
letting
a
location
define
everything
else
about
their
life.
I've
spoken
another
podcast
recently
and
said
for
far
too
long.

You
should
integrate
work
into
your
life,
and
people
are
experiencing
that
at
scale
and
again,
even
with
the
the
downsides
of
quarantine
and
isolation.
People
are
recognizing
that
there's
something
happening
here
that
hasn't
happened
in
a
long
time.
It's
a
Great
Awakening,
a
great
migration
and
it's
powerful
man.
People
are
recognizing
that
community
matters
more
than
ever
they're
kind
of
going
back
to
their
roots
in
a
big
way.
So
there's
a
lot
more
happening
here
than
just
hey.
The
office
is
gonna,
look
different.
You
know,
like
that's,.

Knew
we
wanted
to
adopt
probably
five
or
six
years
we,
my
wife
and
I,
have
always
been
travelers.
We
love
cultural
exploration
and,
at
some
point,
five
or
so
years
into
our
marriage.
We
were
somewhere
well
outside
of
the
US
and
we
kind
of
collectively
looked
at
each
other
and
said:
there's
a
lot
of
kids
and
people
around
the
world
that
just
need
love
and
we.

The
exploration
of
that
I
think
if
we're
ever
gonna
grow
our
family,
like
we
should
consider
adoption,
because
if
you
love
adventure,
there
are
a
few
ways
to
grow
your
family
more
adventurous
than
saying
yeah,
I'm
all-in
with
adoption,
I'm
diving
off
the
deep
end.
This
is
a
journey
I'm
just
going
to
say
yes
to
and
then
see
what
happens
you
release
so
much
control
or
so
much
perceived
control
because,
frankly,
even
creating
your
own
human
there's.
A
lot!
That's
outside
of
your
control.
We
think
we're
in
control,
but
you.

It's
a
fair
point,
so
this
happened
years
ago
and
I
kept
kind
of
pushing
it
off
because
I
never
wanted
to
be
an
absentee.
Dad
I
was
traveling
like
crazy
and
I
kept
coming
to
the
conclusion
that
I
don't
have
enough
time
for
it
and
it's
the
point.
I
hit
this
season
in
my
life,
where
I
was
just
burned
out
on
the
corporate
bureaucracy
and
I
said
this
is
the
moment.

This
is
the
time
when
I'm
gonna
hit
reset
I'm
gonna
deliberately
reassess
Who
I
am
I'm
gonna,
take
a
different
career
path,
deliberately
to
stop
chasing
one
thing
and
start
allowing
white
space
in
my
life,
for
what
I
think
is
gonna,
be
the
most
fulfilling
adventure
ever
and
so,
when
we
pressed
YES
on
that,
all
we
did
was
we
signed
up
for
an
informational
session
and
I
said
all
right.
Let's
just
see
how
it
goes
and
that's.

Happened
was
everything
after
that.
Just
was
so
easy
and
it
just
kept
confirming
like
you're
on
the
right
path,
things
that
should
have
been
hard
if
I
called,
are
taking
a
lot
of
patience.
They
just
kind
of
worked
out
and
we
definitely
hit
some
snags
along
the
way.
I
think
everybody
does.
But
if
you
look
back
at
those
and
it's
it's
so
rewarding
that
you
and
that
job
choice
was
a
big
snag
like
should
we
delay
it
more
like?
What's
the
opportunity
he
like?

No,
the
time
is
now
and
then
it
was
confirmed
with
just
the
most
amazing,
not
only
child,
but
birth
mom
and
birth
family.
It's
a
fully
open
adoption
and
so
there's
closed
adoptions
in
the
open
and
fully
open
fully
Oakland
is
relatively
new,
but
I
could
not
recommend
it
more
because
it
enables
the
kid
to
know
he
was
chosen.
He
or
she
were
chosen,
and
it
is
the
greatest
honor
of
my
life
to
be
chosen
to
be
a
parent.
I
mean
think
about
the
magnitude
of
that
you.

That
you
allow
freedom
and
flexibility,
they
can
make
decisions
like
this
dude.
This
is
how
you
change
the
world.
You
empower
people
to
decouple
geography
and
results
and
allow
them
to
make
decisions
like
that.
How
many
more
adoptions
would
happen
if
remote
were
widespread
and
people
could
go
to
where
they
had
a
community
around
them,
so
it
wasn't
as
scary
to
raise
a
child
with
just
two
parents
like
now.
You
have
your
whole
village.
You
have
your
parents,
grandparents,
your
whole
community,
that's
how
it
used
to
be
way
back
in
the
day.

That's
where
the
phrase
it
takes.
A
village
came
from
yeah
used
to
actually
raised
children
communally,
and
now
it's
become
very
dog-eat-dog
in
part
in
this
part
of
the
world.
So
that's
why
it
means
a
lot
when
you
empower
people
to
go
where
they
need
to
be.
You
also
unlock
so
much
potential
on
what
charities
they
can
contribute
to
what
communities
they
can
contribute
to
the
people
that
are
in
the
dumps
that
they
can
bring
out
of
that
because
they
are
physically
there
reversing
rural
depopulation.
All
of
this
matters.

So
so
much
and
it's
personal
to
me
because
I've
seen
it
happen
like
this,
is
it
has
physically
changed
my
life
and
generations
of
other
people
and
I
don't
want
to
be
the
exception.
I
want
to
be
the
norm.
Why
am
I
in
the
minority
this
we
have
to
get
better
at
this?
We
have
to
enable
and
empower
this
for
more
people,
so.

Pretty
ideal
right
now
we
have
a
fully
open
relationship.
We
we
recap
his
life
in
an
email
every
single
month,
so
we
take
notes
along
the
month
of
like
what
new
foods
did
he
eat.
What
new
words
did
he
say
what
new
people
did
he
meet?
Last
year
we
took
him
on
26
flights
to
12
states.
I
went
on
his
first
international
trip
earlier
this
year
we
went
to
visit
Europe
and
we
catalogue
all
of
those
things
we
take
photos.
We
take
notes
and
I
write.

and
I
love
that
part
of
adoption,
because,
like
it's
really
busy
and
parenting
