We decided the best way to end the summer was to visit the beach! Jerry Lokken from Town of Groton Parks and Recreation was kind enough to join us, and give us a little background about Esker Point Beach, right here in Groton, CT.

Hi welcome to another episode of get outside with gpl I'm tracy torres, I'm kim valentine and today we're visiting esker point beach. We have a special guest, jerry lagan from the groton parks and rec department.

Hey kevin tracy, thanks for having me here today, just a little history for you esker point beach: it's a 600 foot man-made beach that was built in 1967..

Some people might think that esker refers to some person, but actually it refers to a geological feature.

An esker is a long ridge of gravel or other sediment deposited by a retreating, glacier managed by the groton parks and recreation department. The beach has a swimming area, public restrooms and showers, and a lovely grassy area for families to picnic.

It's home to our tour de nonk road race and it's the home for our summer. Sound waves concert series, that's the most successful and longest running series in the area.

However, this summer we had to cancel the series due to the cobit situation, but we're hoping to bring music back to the beach soon as soon as we're able to do it safely.

The beach is also home to the sand, volleyball league and a ground public library book nook. The library has seven book nooks throughout broughton. They contain high quality donations of books and magazines. No library card needed you can just borrow them on the honor system.

In addition to all those other features, esker point also has a small beach facing groton longpoint, and we also have a personal watercraft launching area opposite on the other side of the street. In the parking lot.
