elementary
style.
The
presentation
that
I
prepared,
but
actually
what
the
take
out
of
the
discussion
around
trust
was
really
quite
interesting.
For
me,
I
actually
thought
it
was
going
to
be
sort
of
an
academic
explosion
of
the
mind
when
it
comes
to
cryptography
and
where
it
might,
this
go
in
the
world
of
cybercrime
and
what
is
happening
in
networks
and
quantum
computing.
But
in
fact
the
conversation
really
hit
the
heart
of
where
success
in
implementations
of
blockchain
can
come
about.
A
One
of
them
was
1996
when
I
very
first
started
my
first
business
actually
in
the
heart
of
Brisbane,
a
very
tiny
city
in
Australia,
and
it
was
then
I
began
to
realize
that
I
had
propensity
towards
computing
and
I'm
a
self-taught
engineer
and
have
been
sitting
behind
the
laptop
for
the
better
part
of
20
odd
years.
But
I
understand
business,
and
so
the
marriage
of
technical
skills
and
business
has
given
me
the
opportunity
to
start
a
number
of
companies
and
subsequently
sell
those
sell
those
businesses
out
the
door.

number
of
things
were
happening:
banks
all
of
a
sudden
were
talking
quite
seriously
inside
of
their
buildings
and
corralling
around
cryptographers,
to
understand
this
white
paper,
Satoshi
Nakamoto,
and
what
might
that
mean
and
I'd
bought
Bitcoin
in
2010,
and
there
was
buzzes
around
me
and
I
thought.
This
is
really
quite
interesting
and
in
the
backdrop
of
that
time,
I
took
four
years
of
research
papers
of
the
diamond
industry
and
I
laid
them
out
actually
on
the
wall
like
a
serial
killer.

So
after
the
course
of
about
two
or
three
months,
I
ended
up
falling
into
a
hackathon
in
Google,
with
Aviva
one
of
the
largest
insurance
companies
in
the
UK
and
I
walk
into
this
Innovation
Lab
and
yet
again,
I
see
another
bunch
of
very
keen
developers.
Thinking
about
Bitcoin
and
a
crypto
wallet
and
I
see
developers.
Talking
about
writing
an
app
I,
see
yet
again
the
same
old
business
model
just
being
digitized.
A
This
is
what
we
want
to
do.
A
part
of
the
discussion
today
is
a
reflection
and
all
the
things
that
we
have
done:
the
rewiring
of
an
entire
industry,
that's
500
years
old,
the
track
and
trace
of
diamonds
from
the
source
of
their
mind
right.
The
way
through
to
today
now
in
retail
networks,
where
consumers
can
ask
where
their
diamond
comes
from
and
ever
ledger
knows,
and
we
have
produced
that
across
an
aggregated
set
of
data
with
cross
verification
over
the
diamond
to
supply
chain.
You
would
have
heard
time
and
time
again
presentations
like
this.

Now,
that's
seventy
billion
dollars
not
set
in
a
ring
still
a
loose
stone
now
think
about
it.
A
supply
chain
that
has
a
rock
it's
mined.
It's
cut
and
polished
15
billion,
270
I'm
wearing
this
jacket.
It's
been
ginned
and
spend.
We've
got
cotton
and
wool,
it's
come
together
and
very
complex
supply
chains
across
the
world,
and
yet
the
value
construct
of
this
I
can
buy
and
markets
Marks
and
Spencers
for
less
than
40
pounds.
A
We
just
picked
a
bloody
big
niche,
so
we
began
in
April
of
2015
and
in
the
previous
number
of
years
in
the
research
papers
they
told
us
some
pretty
alarming
numbers
that
were
happening
and
in
fact
it's
a
bit
like
climate
change.
When
the
scientists
keep
telling
you
it's
coming,
it's
coming
and
then
all
of
a
sudden.
You
have
this
moment
where
the
scientists
stand
in
front
of
you
and
say
we
got
it
wrong.
We
underestimated
actually
how
bad
it
was.
A
So
ever
letters
began
in
April
of
2015
with
some
early
warning
signs
within
the
industry
that
the
mid-tier
of
the
market
had
a
two
billion
dollar
shortfall
on
supply
chain
finance.
Now
banks
would
supply
finance
to
the
industry
on
accounts
receivable.
They
would
finance
the
invoices
that
would
go
backwards
and
forwards,
and
we
had
very
early-stage
challenges
where
the
diamond
industry
would
double
finance
that
part
of
the
pipeline.

They
would
take
one
invoice
and
give
it
to
Bank
a
they
would
take
that
same
invoice
and
give
it
to
bank
B,
particularly
maybe
in
one
country
or
it
could
even
be
in
a
different
country.
They
double
finance
that
same
invoice.
We
use
that
capital
for
other
purposes
and
hope
that
the
cash
flow
of
the
business
would
catch
up,
and
that
would
be
fine
over
time.
However,
Standard
Chartered
in
2016,
with
their
two
billion
dollar
portfolio,
had
400
million
dollars
in
non-performing
loans.
A
There
was
the
first
warning
sign
of
the
climate
change
that
was
upon
the
diamond
industry,
the
second
October
six
months
after
I
started
ever
ledger:
gea,
the
Gemological
Institute
of
America,
the
grade
and
certify
80%
of
the
world's
diamonds
I
was
in
Mexico.
I
went
to
the
pub
that
afternoon,
where
my
email
lit
up
they'd
been
hacked.
Two
people
arrested,
20
companies
banned
from
Diamond
trade,
the
diamond
records,
which
was
effectively
a
central
authority
of
record
of
certification.
The
color
and
the
clarity
of
the
diamonds
had
changed.
A
They
picked
that
up
at
a
point
in
time,
but
the
biggest
problem
was
they
had
no
provenance
and
understanding
of
where
that
data
was
now
retailers
in
the
world,
whether
they
be
larger.
Retailers
like
Blue
Nile
in
the
United,
States
or
even
market
places
like
eBay,
rely
upon
a
digital
record
of
that
certification
to
validate
the
diamond
and
it
attributes
the
value
of
that
stone.
A
So
after
the
20
people
were
banned
from
Diamond
trade,
ever
Leger
began
working
with
the
GAA
on
how
we
could
instill
a
better
network
of
trust
around
their
digital
records
and
all
in
the
meantime,
working
across
the
industry
in
major
countries.
Now
there
are
10
major
large-scale
mining
companies
in
the
world
and
geographically
they're
concentrated
in
only
a
handful
of
countries
in
Africa
and
Russia,
Australia
and
Canada.
A
So
when
I
stood
Center
after
a
reading,
all
of
the
research
paper
Trust's
there
was
it
was.
It
was
non-existent
within
the
industry
and
if
that
wasn't
enough,
we
then
had
a
scientific
breakthrough
with
synthetic
diamonds.
Mad
made
diamonds
that
could
be
baked
and
made
in
an
environment
where
gemologist
trained
gemologist
experts
within
the
diamond
industry
could
not
tell
the
difference
between
a
man-made
diamond
and
a
natural
stone
by
the
naked
eye
and
by
magnification.
A
So
all
of
a
sudden,
the
value
construct
that
existed
with
industry
from
15
billion
to
80
billion,
two
billion
dollar
portfolio
of
loans
are
dissipating.
Fraud
is
setting
itself
upon
the
industry.
It
is
a
collision
of
opportunity
for
us
to
rewire
the
trust
within
the
industry
with
new
mechanisms,
so
it
wasn't
reliant
upon
central
authorities.
It
wasn't
reliant
upon
siloed
information
coming
together
and
then,
of
course,
we
have
consumers.
A
This
was
the
vision
in
2015
that
we
set
upon
the
world,
and
this
is
how
we
approached
it.
We
connected
with
the
major
certificate
houses
in
the
world
in
America,
India,
Israel
and
Antwerp,
where
they
grade
and
certify
the
diamonds.
We
didn't
capture
just
the
four
C's
we
took
40
metadata
points,
use
high-definition,
photography.
We
map
the
inclusions
within
the
stone
and
took
subsurface
laser
engraving
on
the
girdle
and
the
crown
it's
effectively
a
digital
twin
of
that
object.
We
rely
upon
machines
to
give
us
that
scientific
certainty.

We
now
know
where
diamonds
are
being
sold
and
resold
online
and
open
market
places
such
as
Amazon
and
eBay,
and
work
with
insurance
companies
on
fraudulent
claims
and
with
banks,
so
that
they
Karen
can
help
to
finance
the
diamond
pipeline
more
efficiently.
The
very
first
iteration
of
ever
ledger
was
to
think
about
the
underlying
construct
of
the
data.
How
can
we
bring
a
new
standard
of
provenance
that
didn't
exist?
There
is
no
platform
of
provenance
in
the
world,
so
we
looked
at
the
gs1
standard
of
traceability
that
existed
with.
A
Epc
is
codes
that
was
quite
mature
in
electronics
and
it
had
never
been
applied
within
the
industry.
We
abstracted
the
information
through
api's
and
because
we
have
such
a
high
correlation
and
a
density
across
our
industry.
We
connected
the
major
part
of
the
pipeline
together
as
our
first
release
iteration.

It
was
all
about
building
consortiums
I've
got
to
get
these
two
banks
to
come
together
and
then
I'm
getting
at
a
fourth
bank
and
a
fifth
bank
in
a
six
bank
and
I'm
gonna,
bring
them
in
the
room
and
then
I'm
gonna
teach
them
how
to
play
nicely
with
each
other,
because
by
the
way
they
never
have
before
today,
because
there's
this
great
big
thing
called
governance
that
sits
in
the
middle
of
it,
then
I'm
going
to
explain
in
the
most
simplistic
terms
is
really
complicated.
Technology
say.
Don't
worry.

Trust
is
going
to
be
embedded
within
a
protocol
that
you
can't
see,
and
even
if
you
could
see
it
is
very
difficult
to
understand
and
of
course
that's
going
to
take
an
incredible
amount
of
time.
Now.
The
diamond
industry
in
and
off
the
tail
end
of
the
United
Nations
created
the
Kimberley
process.
Firstly,
it's
a
three-step
validation
system
that
enables
the
validation
of
diamonds
at
the
source
of
ruff.

It
was
introduced
to
ensure
that
diamonds
are
not
traded
globally
anywhere
in
the
world
from
conflict
zones,
and
we
wind
forward
to
today,
from
1517
years
later,
it's
been
hugely
successful.
Ninety-Nine
point:
nine
nine
seven
percent
of
the
world's
trades
of
diamonds
adhere
to
the
Kimberley
Process.
It's
a
paper-based
validation
system.
It
didn't
enable
the
digital
thumbprint
of
rough,
but
it
was
a
consortium.
A
81
countries
come
together
two
times
a
year.
It
has
consensus
mechanisms
that
exist.
It's
also
a
network
that
brings
together
not
only
the
corporate
entities
within
industry.
It
can't
brings
together
NGOs
the
world
trade
authorities.
The
customs
authorities
are
all
in
the
room
two
times
a
year
every
year
and
have
been
for
15
plus
years
and
when
I
stood
and
understood
that,
for
me
it
was
an
enablement.

So
it
took
me
a
year
to
run
around
the
world
and
educate
that
the
industry
was
broken
and
the
changes
upon
us.
It
took
another
six
months
to
re-educate
from
a
technology
tooling
perspective,
and
at
year
two
we
were
at
two
million
diamonds
being
traced
from
the
source
of
the
mine
to
the
manufacturers,
and
then
the
last
mile
for
us
was
to
connect
that
to
the
hands
of
the
consumers.

They
operate
in
Hong
Kong
in
mainland
China
and
they
have
splinter
brands
sitting
in
the
US.
We
then
moved
into
the
main
retail
outlets
sitting
in
the
in
the
United
States,
in
both
bricks
and
mortar
and
in
online
and
q1
in
2019,
we'll
be
in
Australia
in
the
run
to
Valentine's,
Day
and
then
in
the
UK.

So,
as
I
stand
before
you
today,
there
are
retail
networks,
jewelry
stores
that
have
blockchain
enabled
diamonds
that
consumers
are
asking
for
with
the
full
provenance
and
traceability
on
chain
delivered
to
them
in
a
simplistic
application,
so
that
the
consumer
can
understand
what
value
means
to
them.
When
you
combine
provenance,
trust
and
blockchain
when
it
comes
to
diamonds.

those

medical
records
that
aren't
necessarily
easily
obtainable
in
the
open
market.

we
took
the
very
same
approach
in
terms
of
the
capturing
of
forensic
data
for
diamonds.
Now.
Why?

how
could
we
get
to
the
place
that
we
that
we
achieved
so
fast
diamonds
are
unique
by
their
very
character,
so
we
could
have.
We
could
easily
apply
a
unique
identifier.
You
can
easily
replicate
with
other
scientific
methods
of
high-definition
photography,
photography,
resident,
ultrasound
and
spectra
readings
that
forensic
view
of
that
diamond,
and
we
can
do
it
affordably.

hyper
consolidation
within
the
industry
connecting
the
machines
maybach
going
to
being

time
there
will

the
scope

a
tooth
in
time.
