I'm Dan hunt- and this is up close and personal- the show where we take a look at how our guests got to where they are today and it's brought to you by Dunamis global tech. Now today's guest is brian behlendorf. Brian welcome to the show. Thank you so much for being here. You are the executive director of hyperlink, pipe religion, hyper ledger, I'm, sorry, hyper ledger and what what is hyper ledger so.

We are a consortium of over 250 different organizations, most of them companies, but a couple of other gun agencies and banks and nonprofits and those sorts of things working together to build open source software around distributed. Ledger's and smart contracts.

Okay, let me let me stop you for one. Second, you said banks yeah.

B

A

Then you said, banks working together, I know.

B

A

Two things don't go together: how.

B

Does that work well and even I software, even in all these other domains like it's not usual, it's not easy to bring these different parties together, but what really unifies everybody is. This thing we've been doing for 20 years, but I've been a part of actually 25 called open source software. An open source software is all about developers working together and companies working together to work on something, that's comments of the creates, a platform so that everyone can then spend more of their time and excuse.

At layers above that right and it's you know, that's where we got the internet from it's, where we get all sorts of different technology, advancements problems so now.

A

It's it's there's a pattern to it. We know it now.

A

You just said something: it's where we got the internet from you have something on your resume. That is something that all of us might hate you for talk to us about that. The banner ads.

1993 I start working at for this brand new publication called wire Wired.

A

Magazine, oh and and.

B

And I come in partly because I'm a college student I've been playing around with this internet stuff I had a friend working. Why he's like? Hey? We just got started. We really want to understand that the internet works, committing to help us build things, and so I started putting the back issues of Wired on online. As in like a simple BBS kind of form nicely. The free web thing called gopher if you're familiar with it, go.

For Gophers.

It's like really wet webs ish technology, but really what it what it was the lead onto was Wired magazine was one of the first real websites out. There is the first magazine website, there's also the first ad-supported website and so I have the dubious distinction of having put the first ad banner online and I've been apologizing for it ever since the.

First, ad banner online, you know.

B

And I didn't patent it. In fact, I've actually testified against others who tried to patent, but one other thing that came out of all that work was with me at Wired and with a bunch of others of us working together on this open source platform called the Apache web server, which also then became the Apache Software Foundation and I mean that was just one of a number of your open source projects. I got starred in those days like like the Linux operating system and so I that there's a direct line between that work.

I was doing 25 years ago, and what we're doing today in the blockchain.

A

So you started kind of in advertising, but really on the geek side of advertising of getting.

B

It online tell me about.

A

Your parents I mean our did this. The distinct sides of you that that kind of created a whole way to advertise online did that come from your parents, okay,.

B

So my parents were geeks as well. My dad was a COBOL programmer for IBM for a long time and then I also went to go work at DeVry teaching, blue-collar kids about like how to upgrade systems for the year 2000 problem, which I that was like kind of cool. My mom was also kind of a geek and helped sell mainframes, and things like that for IBM III and then so. We had always had a computer around the house.

I did a lot with it like in elementary school, like learning, basic and writing programs that sort of thing, but then like in high school I, really just used it for like term papers except there was this like BBS I was on. You could message, people you'd never met and like in the late 80s that was novel. That was different.

You felt like you were living in the future, and so when I got to Berkeley in 91, it was and I what got an email account and and was shown the way that what the internet looked like before the web. It was like. Oh, this is it this. Is it I want to be a part of it? You.

Went to Berkeley in what year 1991.

I do believe, like you know, you're put here to kind of have a positive impact. You could make some money.

B

You can have some fun but like there are some real problems out there and like we should all be trying to work together to solve something deeper, intractable problems, whether it's around the climate, whether it's around I, you know people get away with things they couldn't get away with, I mean like and I do think tech can still play a role and as much as we love in 2019 to hate on tech and hate on kind of the. What we built like there's a lot of positive energy out there, especially in this blockchain space around.

How do we use this tech to try to make the world a better place and I'm I'm body? You.

A

Know you talk about a lot of people working together, we're here in Las, Vegas at world crypto con 2019 second year for this conference. What do you think you're? What are you seeing? Who are you talking to as you're at a conference like this.

B

You know and a lot of the overblown expectations I think around what blockchain technology the cryptocurrency thing could do. I kind of hit it supreme right we're two years in that ago. Now to this like maturation and people are really looking at well. How do you use this to do supply chain traceability?

B

How do you do this to make paint Global Payments work more, but how might you do this to to again solve some of these problems and there's certainly still a bit of the coin thing around and such which is fine and great and I, think that's kind of a disruptive force, but you do see a couple of like established companies here and established players going. So here's how you might transform some of these deeper in.

Cases and that's where ledger has been and I've been with high pillager. Now almost four years we started with just a few pieces of software and some ideas and all of our members were like no there's this other side of blockchain, which is all about better traceability, better systems of record and better.

To build kind of regulatory environments that automate the kind of regulations within them, whether it's payments, whether it's trade finance, whether it's again supply chain traceability, all that kind of stuff that now people have built real systems to deliver using our stock I and we're. Seeing this really rich industry have.

A

You seen anything at this conference that kind of opened your eyes to something new.

B

I, you know a lot a lot of this, because I've seen you have just been here's where here's how those stories have evolved in 2019. There is no more easy money right.

Have to prove value, I.

And deliver on your promises here, not just your investors but to the people with the problems you're trying to solve so have.

You sat in on any of the panels or seen any of the speakers.

B

You are on tell yourself s and.

For the for the novice person for the person who doesn't know what cryptocurrency is they don't know what a wallet is, but it's like it's kind of becoming well, the future I got to learn about it. Give us a tip give that that person a tip as to what should they be looking for if they want to get involved in the crypto world.

Yes, so there are certainly wallets litigator keys here, easier to use and you're seeing interest from companies like Facebook and others to embed wallets deep inside their their different social networking tools right.

You know Facebook hasn't rolled that out yet, but I. Obviously, there's Google pay up. Okay, those sorts of things I think you're, still a bit of an evolution that has to happen before this stuff is really going to be ready for consumers to adopt in mass and I. Don't know that the approach that's been proposed with this Libre Association is the.

A

Right approach or.

B

Not I do know that central banks I do know, obviously that, like blue chip organizations and and others are going well wait. How do we use this to make some of these under covers your behind the scenes back office things work better right and so for most people like blockchain, isn't going to change how you buy a car, how you buy your groceries onto the thing necessarily in the next two years? But what hopefully it does? Is you know when you want to wire money to somebody knows country? What does it take three days?

What doesn't that take five minutes right? That kind of thing will work better, we're also staying, and this is something happening inside hyper ledger, but we're seeing out there broadly as well.

There's a real revolution taking place in the technology landscape, around digital identity, and it's it's a sea change I mean it's a shift away from everything, interesting about you being, on the other end of a name and password over in Facebook or another big big site, and more about things that you'll hold in a wallet which will be the digital equivalent of things like your passport, your driver's license your diploma and other professional certifications right documents that don't you belong trapped in some silo somewhere some portal somewhere, but are things that you should be able to take with you and move?

You should be able to prove your diploma is logicians, even if your business, don't even if your university goes.

Out it goes out of business right.

B

And disappears off the web right. You want to still prove you went there, so so there's a bunch of us working in the space. The terms were using are self sovereign or user. Centric digital identity, III and there's a real sea change happening there, and this will start to emerge in consumer local products next year. You.

Know that that did brings up the question: is the consumer base ready for that? You know, I mean.

Kind of packaged and sold without their knowledge, we don't have an infrastructure being able to trace who's sharing that data and we granted consecutive and this kind of approach gives us a building block to be able to build that kind of traceability. It allow us to happen to have that awareness allows us did a lot of requirements around the GDP are at California consumer Privacy Act. All these other rules, they've started to be fast and I.

Think that's going to give consumers a greater sense of agency, a better sense of control and I mean it really is still up to companies to build these kind of interfaces. This kind of wallets gonna make that real, but that's one.

Last question tell me about Berkeley I mean you hear this stories. You know the people that go to Berkeley I mean Berkeley is like an institution that is different than any other institution out there right.

B

Well, they once said this is kind of a nerd show that the two best products that ever came out of Berkeley were BSD, which is the Berkeley standard, UNIX, distribution and LSD.

B

But in reality Berkeley I mean I went there because it was so broad and like the different topics, you could become like really interested in and you.

Worked later in my career a few years ago, I worked as chief technology officer for the world. He can perform. Ok.

Of that, klaus schwab got his PhD at UC Berkeley and some of the one at the peak of this of the free speech right.

Stakeholder economics, which has now like taken over boardrooms, has taken over by companies who are interested in the social impact of what they're doing so I I. You know it has this foundational kind of like influence that I, don't I, think most people don't even realize that they're using something that kind of came from this. This long tradition going back to not just the Free Speech Movement, but but but the Wild West, the Barbary Coast, like all of that stuff from the mid 19th century kind,.
