A Blockchain-enabled Solution to Drive Material Traceability Along the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain in Asia - Daniel Laverick & Zhang Haisheng, Zuellig Pharma
Pharmaceutical supply chains are complex structures spanning across multiple organizations and stakeholders along its handover points. Such system complexities generate a lack of transparency, limited data provenance and the inherent inability to track the healthcare products’ activities. Counterfeit drugs, parallel imports, operational inefficiencies resulting in compromised product integrity and hence product wastage are consequences of such limitations within existing supply chains. It is apparent that an end-to-end product tracking visibility across the pharmaceutical supply chain is paramount to ensure product safety to its end-users as well as minimize manufacturers’ operational costs.
Here, we present our solution, eZTracker, which is powered by Blockchain Hyperledger Fabric. Our speakers will share today’s challenges in pharmaceutical supply chain visibility and collaboration, as well as our system architecture that govern our proposed solution to address the needs for pharma material traceability and quality reassurance. Used cases in Asia will also be shown to illustrate our blockchain-enabled journey and the outcomes we aim to achieve in the near future.

in

around
cross-border
trading
or
a
great
market,
so
basically
products
that
are
that
are
sold
in
one
market
end
up
turning
up
in
in
another
market
and
so

that

brings

it

risk

whole
raft
of
issues
around.
How
did
they
get
there?
How
are
they
transported?
Are
these
cold
chain
products?
Were
they
really
transported
in
the
right
conditions,
not
just
not
to
mention
that
there's
a

a
monetary
value
attached
to
that
as
well.

there's
a

a
margin
of
erosion
inefficiencies
in
the
supply
chain.
It
is
obviously
each
handover
point.
The
data
can
be
lost
basically,
and
so
really,
how
do
we?
How
do
we
streamline
that
whole
supply
chain?

do
we,

do
we
give
a
window
into
the
the
visibility
and
how
do
we
share
data
efficiently
across
the
across
the
supply
chain
and
when
we
originally
started
this
this
this
idea
about
putting
a
blockchain
solution
in
in
place?

recalls
and

vehicles
in
the
pharma
industry
and
in
the
space
take
a

long
time.

anything

three
months
to
figure
out
where
all
the
products
are

pull
them

back.

can
we
put
a
solution
in

the

can

help

that
fight?

supply
chain,
we
have
raw
materials
guys.

manufacturers,
we
have
ourselves
distributors

we
have

channels
of

they
call
the
hospital
clinic
and
then
at
the
end,

patient,
but
really,
how
can
we?

we
bring
all
of
these
players
together

parties
in
what
this
tends
to
be
a
fragmented
ecosystem
together
and
help

get
people
everybody
to
to
participate
in

a
networking

so

we
saw
was
being
able
to
share
information
between
parties.

there's
no,

no
standardized
format,
there's
no
mechanism
for
data
transfer,
also
a
lack
of,
I
might
say,
trust
people
don't
want
to
send
data

ownership.
So
how
can
we?

products

through

supply
chain
and
they've

handled

correct

kind

using

stamp

about
empowering
the
patient
to

the

think,

key
players
that
we
have
in
the

ecosystem

each

those
players

own
blockchain,
node
and

then
it
feeds
into
the
blockchain
network
and

we're
trying
to
do,
or
what
we
are
doing
is
that
a
patient
has
a
mobile
app.
They
scan
the
code
as
you
can
see,
and
they
get
one
of
three
answers.
It's
a
genuine
product
good
to
go!
It's
unregistered!

not

product

we
find
anywhere
on
the
blockchain,
even
though
it
looks
like
a
genuine
code
and
and
yeah
no
intention
purposes.

real
product

the
parallel
product.
So

this

was

genuine

went
through
the
supply
chain,
but
it's

place

it
shouldn't
be,

be
a
different
country.

could

different
facility.

we
can
go
down

level
to
say
okay,
this
was

sold
to
a
government
hospital,
but
actually
you're
scanning
it
in
a
in
a
private
clinic
and
we're
not
sure
how
we
got
there.
So
really
really
getting
a
granular
level
of
of
detail
and
being
able
to
to
share
that
with
with
the
patient,
and
one
area
that
I
touch
on
is
really
around
this
digital
identity.
You
know
this,
this
is
in
asia.
We
don't
have
a
so
far.

we
actually
do
is
assign
a
digital
identity
to
each
of
the
products
that
are
that
are
actually
loaded
into
the
blockchain
and
into
an
available
on
easy
tracker.

what
that
does
is
it
allows
us
to

tag
individual
boxes
to
individual
people
who
have
been
sold
to
and
then
back
to,
and
then
obviously
then
tie
that
back
to
the
to
the
patient.

us
a

granularity

we

usually

we
were
working
with

products

batch
level
and

have

which
we

target

obviously
traceability

all
about
being
able
to
use
blockchain
to
help
secure
the
supply
chain
and

flag.

the

pass
this

to
the

authority
so
that
they
can
do
something
about
it
and
then
there's
an
education
piece
as
well,
because
within
the
app,

you
scan

obviously

then
put
some
some
key
points
around.
Why
you
should
take
the
product
education
around?

potentially
might
be
side
effects,
and
also,
if
you,
if
you
scan
a
counterfeit
product,
what
could
be
the
the
impact
if
you
were
to,
if
you
were
to
to
take
that
product?

so
finally,
before
going

the

we

in
our
hyperledger
fabric
blockchain,

manufacturers,
including

gather,
garter,
sale,

so

the
manufacturer,
they
will
share
the
the

will
feed
in
the
material
battery
information,

the

data
to
the
blockchain.

of
course
before
that
there

some

not
all
of
the
information
will
be
fed
into
the

blockchain
ledger

own
private

only
fit

evidence

traceability

their
