Description
Orion is a standard database with the blockchain properties that provides tamper-evidence, provenance, data lineage authenticity, non-repudiation, and multi-sig capabilities with standard data model and transactional APIs. In our talk we will give an overview of the technology, explain its benefits and applicability to different domains and demonstrate some of its features. More about the Orion Lab is at:

About the Speakers:
Dany Moshkovich is a manager of Blockchain Technology Platforms at IBM Research – Haifa, responsible for the development of trust solutions for business eco-systems. He holds a B.Sc. from the Electrical Engineering faculty of the Technion — Israel Institute of Technology and MBA from the Open University of Israel. Dany is experienced in research and development of solutions and tools for different domains using a wide range of technologies including AI and Blockchain. He has co-authored 10 technical publications, and 17 US patents.
Yoav Tock is a research staff member at IBM Research – Haifa, where he is working in the areas of blockchain technologies and distributed systems. He is a significant contributor to Hyperledger Fabric. He holds a B.Sc. (cum laude), M.Sc., and Ph.D. from the Electrical Engineering faculty of the Technion — Israel Institute of Technology, from1994, 1999, and 2003, respectively. He has co-authored over 30 technical publications, has 12 US patents issued and many more pending.

important
to
understand
that
business
ecosystem
vary
in
their
topology
and
the
intrinsic
level
of
trust
between
participants
and
therefore
has
different
trust
requirements.
From
the
topological
perspective.
The
ecosystem
can
be
divided
into
centralized
ecosystem
with
at
least
one
party
highly
or
partially
trusted
by
all
participants
and
decentralized
low
trust
ecosystem
with
no
single
trust
party
in
highly
trusted
ecosystem.

There
are
three
major
types
of
technology
that
can
help
to
close
the
trust
gap
in
business
ecosystem.
First
of
all,
the
classical
database
with
the
basic
recording
features
usually
sufficient
for
proper
operation
of
highly
trusted.
Centralized
ecosystems,
while
blockchain
databases
that
extend
classical
database
capability
with
proofs
and
controls
are
the
best
choice
for
limited
or
low
trust,
centralized
ecosystems.

So
why,
and
when,
should
you
consider
using
blockchain
database
technologies?
Look
most
of
the
business
ecosystem
today,
and
probably
your
systems
as
well
operate
under
centralized
trust
assumption,
which
means
that
there
is
at
least
one
trusted
party
like
cloud
provider,
government
organization
or
some
big
player,
while
the
other
participants
doesn't
have
to
trust
each
other.
For
example,
organization,
usually
trust
the
cloud
provider
not
to
block
their
clients
intentionally
from
accessing
services,
although
they
can
easily
do
so.

Hyperledger
orion
combines
classical
database
with
blockchain
properties,
specifically
targeting
centralized
ecosystem.
Such
blockchain
database
technologies
according
to
alibaba,
can
reduce
the
deployment
cost
by
at
least
75
percent
compared
to
decentralized
blockchains
and
according
to
gartner,
will
replace
most
of
the
permission
blockchain
uses
by
2025.

Finally,
we
provide
a
multiseek
mechanism
to
improve
transactions
only
when
signed
by
several
designated
parties,
which
is
very
important
to
ensure
trusted
multi-party
interactions
and
all
that
comes
with
the
classical
database
capabilities,
such
as
queries,
resilience
and
scale
standard,
key
value,
json
store
and
transactional
apis
to
ensure
that
the
set
of
read
write
operations
are
executed
as
an
atomic
transaction,
preserving
consistency
and
data
integrity
at
the
high
level.
Orion
is
implemented
as
a
cryptography
based
layer
on
top
of
classical
database.

So,
in
addition
to
the
auditability
use
cases
which
is
highly
available
for
in
the
regulated
industries,
there
is
a
set
of
unique
scenarios
across
different
domains
that
orion
can
help
with.
For
example,
the
multisig
capability
can
be
used
to
automate
many
business
contracting
processes
and
illicitly
support
notary
services.

can
help
to
ensure
authenticity
and
protect
the
integrity
of
the
evidence
collected
through
the
insurance
claims
process.
It
can
significantly
simplify
the
management
of
lies
and
certificates,
educational
records,
property
ownership,
rights
for
government
organization.

be
used
to
securely
digitize
the
covered
vaccination
status,
which
is
very
extremely
important
these
days
and,
of
course
it
will.
Trust
really
reflects
the
provenance
of
goods
and
compliance
to
maintenance
requirements
in
supply
chains.

We
support
multi-key
multi-database
transactions,
a
transaction
starts
by
creating
a
transaction
object.

centralized
approach,
orion
can

can
