stems
from
the
results
of
Toronto's
local
survey
sent
out
earlier
this
year,
which
into
indicated
an
interest
for
more
content,
incorporating
hyper
ledger
Sawtooth.
As
such,
we
are
privileged
to
have
Duncan
Johnson
watts,
as
our
guest
speaker
today,
to
fulfill
that
request.
Now,
for
some,
the
interest
was
in
introductory
level
content,
while
others
desired
more
in-depth
technical
coverage.
The
hyper
ledger
event
on
May
20th
will
also
appeal
to
those
seeking
the
latter
and
the
link
to
that
I'll
place
in
the
chat
momentarily
for
today.

The
first
is
that,
as
some
of
you
might
have
been
noticing,
a
number
of
online
meetups
hosted
by
hyper
ledger
groups
worldwide,
have
been
crossed
close
to
between
groups,
for
example.
Some
of
you
may
be
here
via
hyper
ledger,
Dubai,
Washington,
DC
or
Nigeria,
and
for
that
thank
you
to
mul,
Shankar,
Daniel,
Anadolu
organizers
from
those
respective
groups.
The
ability
to
cross
invite,
of
course,
primarily
results
from
conditions
imposed
by
the
kovat
situation,
which,
as
it
has
with
many
other
things,
brought
all
our
meetup
endeavors
to
the
virtual
space.

that
in
mind,
if
you
haven't
yet
have
a
browse
at
the
link
on
the
screen
at
some
points,
I'll
also
put
that
in
the
chat,
as
well
as
a
link
to
the
master
list
of
online
events.
There
are
a
hundred
and
seventy-eight
meetup
groups
currently
under
hyper
ledger.
Online
events
hosted
by
all
groups,
are
open
to
anyone
and
everyone
interested
so
feel
free
to
RSVP.
So
far,
the
majority
of
them
have
been
in
English
and,
of
course,
some
more
to
come.

The
second
item
is
that
the
meetup
organizer
group
is
currently
working
on
a
form
style
environment
that
we
hope
to
roll
out
to
you
in
the
very
near
future.
The
aim
is
to
serve
as
the
central
hub
for
post
event,
resources
such
as
slides
recordings
and
so
on
sort
of
a
one-stop
resource
for
those
items
to
be
archived.
We're
also
aiming
to
have
it
as
a
place
for
members
to
connect
and
network
virtually
in
a
flavor.
We
hope
will
be
similar
to
traditional
meetups
or
at
least
fill
that
void
when
necessary.

Hopefully
we'll
provide
comparable
value
to
what
in-person
meetups
would
in
that
regard.
On
the
other
hand,
a
positive
is
that
networking
in
this
flavor
can
cover
a
broader
geographic
scale,
so
something
to
consider
again
suggestions
on
what
you
want
to
see
or
on
how
the
layout
can
improve.

Duncan
is
the
CEO
of
blockchain
technology
partners
or
PTP
he's
been
involved
heavily
in
the
open
source
community
for
over
a
decade
prior
to
being
the
CEO
of
BT
P.
He
was
also
the
founder
and
CEO
of
cloud
soft
who
created
the
cloud
apps
manager,
Apache,
Brooklyn,
May,
20th,
7th
he'll,
be
discussing
the
background
of
how
BGP
worked
for
the
Tel
Aviv
Stock
Exchange
on
the
decision
to
develop
a
new
securities
lending
platform,
underpinned
by
hyper
ledger.
Sawtooth
Duncan
is
also
on
hyper
Ledger's
marketing
committee.

I
would
just
share
my
screen
and
you're
right
about
one
thing,
which
is
even
though
we
live
in
a
slightly
topsy-turvy
world.
One
of
the
great
things
about
these
community
get
together
is
we're
no
longer
bound
by
physical
constraints,
which
I
guess
is,
but
one
of
the
one
of
the
more
unusual
side
effects
shall
we
say
so
anyway.
Here
goes
I'm
going
to
share
my
screen.

So,
as
John
said,
you
guys
were
interested
in
in
an
update
on
hydrology
sorties,
which,
by
the
way,
is
one
of
the
older
projects,
so
everyone's
heard
of
hydrogen
fabric,
which
which
was
pretty
much
contributed
almost
at
the
inception
of
of
the
hyper
larger
project,
the
apologia
organization
itself.
But
sawtooth
came
along
about
that,
not
that
long
afterwards.
B
So,
in
fact,
in
terms
of
brief
history
of
time
it
started
life
and
apologies
for
those
of
you
for
whom
this
is
very
familiar,
but
it
started
life
as
an
Intel
research
project
called
sorted
lake
and
its
origins-
and
this
is
important
because
we
often
get
asked
this
we're
looking
at
creating
a
theorem
like
distributed,
ledger
or
blockchain
network.
That
could
also
take
advantage
of
Intel's
SGX
hardware.
So
it's
software
got
extensions
when
I
talk
about
the
support
for
various
consensus
mechanisms.
B
I'll
come
back
to
that,
but
it's
very
important
to
say
upfront
that
since
those
early
days,
sorties
has
grown
into
a
very
mature
project
that
has
that
runs
widely
and
does
not
depend
on
any
hardware,
so
just
get
that
out
of
the
way
so
having
contributed
sorties
to
hyper
ledger.
As
I
say,
it
was
the
second
major
project
in
the
door.
B
It
then
graduated
about
a
year
or
so
later
to
what's
called
active
status.
So
this
is
true
of
any
and
all
projects.
In
fact,
these
days,
we
now
have
a
concept
of
hyper
ledger
labs,
which
is
actually
the
the
main
route
through
which
projects
are
introduced,
and
then
they
can
quite
quickly
move
on
from
there
to
into
active
status.

So
a
good
example
of
that
is
is
I
pledge
a
basic
that
was
contributed
by
consensus
fairly
recently,
but
but
graduated
very,
very
quickly
within
a
matter
of
months,
and
a
very
new
project
has
just
arrived
on
the
scene,
which
was
contributed
initially
to
the
a
hyper
ledger
labs
as
the
as
the
blockchain
interrupt
interrupt
framework,
which
is
now
hi,
pleasure,
cactus.
So
so
that
was
something
that
was
originated
by
Accenture
and
Fujitsu
and
is
now
and
probably
well.

It
is
the
latest
project
and,
of
course,
is
is
now
being
incubated
with
in
Haifa
ledger
so
about
a
year
on
from
graduating
to
active
status.
Sorties
achieved
a
very
important
milestone
when
it
announced
one
dot
o
so
wonder.
O
signifies
that
the
community
working
on
the
project
believes
it
is
now
it
is
now
tested
enough
so
that
it
can
be
used
in
production.
So
that's
a
major
sort
of
milestone
and
if
we
fast
forward
to
late
last
year,
we
were
now
by
then
on
sort.
It's
one
point
two.

So
when
I
get
into
the
meat
of
the
presentation,
I
will
discuss
yeah
what
we
think
of
and
what
we
mean
by
slow
production
grade,
but
suffice
to
say
that
sorties
has
come
a
long
way
from
its
origins
when
it
was
very
much
tied
to
Intel
SGX
hardware
and,
as
you
can
see,
from
the
logos
there,
it's
it's
in
very
well
I'd
use
and
it's
gathering
a
lot
of
momentum
as
we
speak.
So
one
of
the
things
that
I
saw
personally
when
I
was
at
the
hydrologic,
Global
Forum
in
Phoenix.

This
set
of
key
features
when
I'm
talking
to
people
that
maybe
don't
know
the
history
or
the
background
to
hyper
ledger
sources,
or
even
what
hyper
ledger
is
so
being
open
source.
Clearly,
that's
a
huge,
hugely
important.
Now,
if
I
just
take
a
step
back,
John
mentioned
that
I've
been
involved
in
open
source
for
a
decade
or
more
in
the
case
of
blockchain
DLT,
it's
extremely
important
that
what
we
do
is
very
open.

It's
open
to
inspection,
it's
it's
something
that
is
too
big
to
be
owned
or
controlled
by
a
single
entity,
and
so
that's
not
just
about
open
sourcing
the
project
but
is
ensuring
it
has
a
strong
governance
model
and,
of
course,
any
project.
That's
enters
into
hyper
ledger
inherits
a
very
strong
governance
model.
Thanks
to
the
way
in
which
hyper
ledger
itself
is
set
up,
you
can
think
of
it
in
many
respects,
as
a
mini-me
version
of
of
by
the
way.

So
so
hybl
is
a
you
can
think
of
hype,
ledger
and
I
often
think
of
it
ads
and
even
describe
it
as
a
mini-me
version
of
the
Apache
Software
Foundation,
so
I'm
not
sure
if
you're
familiar
with
that,
but
that
that
interestingly
is
is,
is
a
foundation.
That's
been
around
for
many
years
and
in
fact
our
director
of
hyper
ledger,
brian
behlendorf,
the
executive
director
was
one
of
the
cofounders
of
the
apache
software
foundation.
So
key
characteristic
of
hype
later
in
that
sense,
is
it
encourages
diversity
of
project.
So
there
is
fabric,
there
is
sorties.

There's
now
baizhu
there
is.
I
rora
there
is
in
D
and
there's
burrow
there
are.
There
are
a
disk
at
this
point:
6d
LTS,
six
distributed
ledger
brain
words,
so
it's
quite
a
lot
anyway
running
down
on
Sawtooth
itself.
Here
are
the
things
that
we
really
really
like
about
it.
First
of
all,
it
is
scalable
it
is
distributed.
It
is
a
distributed
system
and
it
is
also
very
modular
in
the
way
in
which
it
is
constructed
and
I'll
show
you
a
picture
in
a
minute
that
sort
of
helps
unpack
what
I
mean
by
that.

Another
thing
we
like
is
has
a
very,
very
clear
separation
between
the
network
and
the
application
layers.
So
what
do
I
mean
by
that?
What
I
mean
is
that
the
application
is
completely
separate
from
the
underlying
implementation
of
the
actual
blockchain
itself,
whether
that's
the
state
of
the
world
represented
by
the
Merkel
tree
or
whether
it's
the
blocks.

So
what
that
allows
you
to
do
is
create
things
called
transaction
processes
that,
in
effect,
personalize
your
particular
Sawtooth
network
and
allow
you
to
develop
applications
in
very
much
the
sort
of
classic
client-server
methodology,
so
you're
thinking
very
much
about
the
transaction
process
is
really
being
a
server
side
component
and
then
the
clients
connect
through
to
that
Bureau
REST
API,
of
course,
there's
a
little
more
to
it
than
straightforward
client-server.
There
is.

The
thing
would
have
validated
there's
a
REST,
API
and
so
on,
but
as
a
general
as
a
general
point,
you
can,
and
in
fact
companies
have
imported
a
lot
of
code
into
a
sort
is
teepee
without
changing
a
line
of
code
source.
Can
trust
famously
did
that
early
on
a
couple
of
other
things
that
I
think
really
stand
out
for
us
personally,
for
me
personally,
asked
as
a
company
are
the
first-class
support
for
smart
contract
languages?
Plural!
So
we'll
talk
about
that
again.

In
a
slide
it's
his
time,
but
that
means
that,
in
addition
to
having
support
for
solidity,
which
was
provided
very
early
on
so
when
when
Baro
was
contributed
by
Mon
ax
industries
to
the
hyper
ledger
community,
one
of
the
things
they
contributed
was
the
Boro
EVM
Assyrian
virtual
machine,
so
that
was
integrated
by
people
in
the
sorted
community
into
a
project
called
seth
and
provided
support
for
solidity.
Since
then,
support
has
been
added
for
web
assembly
through
a
project
called
sabre,
but
got
a
slide
on
that
too.

In
a
minute
or
two
and
more
recently,
we've
done
a
lot
of
work
with
digital
asset
on
demo
and
integrating
dan
was
crying
support
for
their
open
source,
Marc
contract
language,
then,
finally,
last,
but
by
no
means
least
pluggable
consensus.
So
what
does
that
mean?
It
means
you
can
start
out
with.
In
the
extreme
case,
you
can
just
work
in
something
called
dev
mode.
We
are
literally
just
working
on
your
laptop,
but
the
moment
you
roll
out
from
that
into
a
multi
node
Network.

You
have
a
choice
of
different
consensus
mechanisms,
depending
on
your
use
case.
You
know
some
are
more
suitable
than
others
and
I'll
cover
that
again
in
this
photo
to
sign
so
architecture,
so
this
is
and
the
source
for
this
resources
is
at
the
bottom
of
the
screen,
and
these
slides
will
be
made
available
after
Hobson's
to
court.
But
essentially,
as
you
can
see
from
this,
you
have
clients
that
are
connecting
through
to
the
validator.
You
can
think
of
that
as
really
the
traffic
caught
the
router.

That
says
when
a
particular
sort
of
request
comes
in,
who
is
this
destined
for
and
it
will
be
destined
for
a
particular
transaction
processor,
so,
but
the
space
as
it
were,
of
transaction
processes
is
his
subject
based
it's
done
through.
Technically,
it's
done
through
the
way
in
which
you,
you
actually
label
the
low
level
these
transactions,
so
there's
a
header
which
provides
the
information
about
which
transaction
family
this
request
is
destined
for,
but
in
general
what
that
means
is
you
can
split
out
processing
into
different
teepees?

It's
the
one
to
end
relationship
without
getting
too
far
into
the
details
of
what
the
validators
proportionately
responsible
for
I'd
call
out,
the
the
pluggable
consensus
consensus
used
to
be
or
the
consensus
the
engine
used
to
be
integrated
with
the
validator,
but
now
it's
something
that
is
pluggable
and
that's
how
you
achieve
through
providing
a
different
consensus
engine
support
for
pbft
raft,
poet,
etc.
So
I
said
earlier
a
few
minutes
ago:
it's
it's
a
modular
and
it's
a
distributed
system.
You
can
see
that
because
you
see
that
every
node
is
essentially
the
same.

I,
don't
know
if
my
friends
from
tacking
a
are
tuning
into
this,
but
they're
working
or
very
hard
on
it
or
interesting,
BFT
consensus,
which
hopefully
will
we'll
learn
more
about
in
in
short
order,
but
right
now,
if
you
unpack
it,
you
have
raft
so
raft
is
none
talking
from
a
business
point
of
view.
That's
very
important!

You
don't
really
want
to
have
to
rollback
transactions
if
you
can
avoid
it,
but
it's
only
crash
fault-tolerance
and
there's
poet
and
poet
SGX,
so
Perez
Jax's
is
the
hardware
dependent
version
of
poet,
proof
of
the
elapsed
time
that
stands
for
that's
forking.
So
there
are
a
lot
of
use
cases
where
that's
a
concern.

And
again
it's
just
crash
fault-tolerant
proof
of
elapsed
time
you
can
think
of
it
as
essentially
a
very
sort
of
Greenway
or
of
determining
over
actually
quite
a
large
number
of
nodes
whose
turn
it
is
to
actually
be
the
leader
of
the
gang
and
that's
done
through.
Essentially,
everyone
goes
sleep
and
then
inevitably
wakes
up
based
on
a
random
time,
I'm
simplifying
somewhat
and
and
somebody
whoever's.

Finally,
pbft
which
and
there's
some
great
content
on
the
hyper
later
blog
about
pbft
and
its
origins
and
how
its
evolved
over
time
number
one,
it's
non,
forking.
Obviously,
that's
again,
as
I
said
earlier
important
from
a
business
standpoint,
but
also
it
is
Byzantine
fault
tolerant.
So,
in
other
words,
it's
it's
it's
much
better.

You
require
at
least
n
minus
F
nodes
to
be
to
be
up
and
running.
So
F
is
the
number
of
faulted
nodes
that
you
can
that
you
can
put
up
with
in
a
network
of
a
given
size.
As
it
says
there
you
can
compute
F,
it's
very
simple
formula.
It
says:
take
the
size
of
the
overall
network.
Take
one
away
from
that
divide
the
whole
thing
by
3
and
then
crucially
take
the
floor
of
that.

So
don't
rely
on
you

want

something
you
want

be
absolutely

or
absolutely

So
that's
that's
really
very
important
in
terms
of
knowing,
when
it's
safe
the
network
to
continue
and
when
it

it
has
to
halt
until
a
node
is
restored.
If
there's
been
a
problem
now
interesting

can
actually
create
local
and
global
resilience,
especially
if
you're
running
this
kind
of

underpinned
by

the
cloud,
and
you
can
do
that
by
selecting

which
is
the

the

provide
local
resilience

running

networks
in
production,

kind
of
considerations
you
have
to.

have
to
factor
into
your
thinking.

asses,

it's
actually
horses

courses
where
we
are
by

large
moving
away
from
being
wedded
to
a
specific,
underlying
DLT
or
even
centralized
major
in
some
cases
and
saying,
instead,
it's
better
to
operate
at
the
at
the
smart
contract
level,
where
you
know
you're,
basically
saying
well
what
do
I
need
for
for
for
this
or
that
scenario.
So,
in
the
case
of
hyper
ledger
basil
and
sorties,
they
can
both
be
run
permissionless
or
permission
built
in
two
days
who,
at
this
moment
in
time
there
is
something
there
is.

In
all
three
cases,
what
you're
really
doing
is
is
essentially
creating
a
highly
customized
transaction
process
so
and
what
it's
doing
will
vary
depending
on
on
the
language
in
question.
The
case
of
damn,
oh,
damn,
oh
itself,
provide
all
the
download
community
provide
an
integration
kit
and
that
that
provides
us
with
the
information
to
allow
us
to
essentially
store
and
persist
information
on
it'll
on
a
ledger,
whether
of
that's
the
DLT,
CLT
or
whatever.

So
just
quick
word
on
down
well,
since
it's
probably
not
as
well
known
as
solidity,
although
it
should
be
it's
an
open
source,
smart
contract
language,
it
was
open
sourced
over
a
year
ago,
now
so
beginning
of
last
year,
initial
development
was
by
digital
asset.
The
company
digital
assets
should
be
well
known
to
people
on
this
core.
If
you're
familiar
with
the
hyper
ledger
history,
because
they
actually
originally
contributed
hyper
ledger
the
name
to
the
community
and
have
been
very
active
with
people
like
Donna
pray.

We
focus
on
interoperability,
so
we
have
to
be
careful
here
what
we
mean,
so
you
do
get
using
demo.
You
are
able
to
operate
in
a
way
that
allows
you
to
take
a
dam
or
contract
implemented
and
running
on
sorties
and
go
and
implement
it
and
run
it
or
deploy
it
onto
high
plays
you're
busy.
So
that's
portability,
but
that's
not
interoperability.

Interoperability
is
something
that
the
digital
asset
and
and
other
people
working
on
down
more
are
busy
busy
focusing
on
and
the
project
that
embodies.
Those
concepts
is
called
Canton.
So
interoperability
is
a
huge,
huge
topic
of
conversation
right
now,
not
just
within
high
Pelageya
through
cactus,
but
also
more
broadly.
It
was
something
that
came
up
time
again
on
various
consensus
panels
that
I've
been
listening
to
over
the
last
few
days.

It's
it's
not
just
providing
a
very
strong
privacy
model
in
terms
of
sub
transaction
privacy
or
data
partitioning,
but
also
potentially,
as
Canton
develops
over
the
rest
this
year
into
next.
It
will
also
offer
we
believe
the
ability
to
have
a
small
contract
that
bridges
between
different
worlds.
So
more,
that's
the
whole
topic
of
conversation
in
its
own
right.

It
was
a
great
short
and
sweet
demo
that
was
done
at
HTF,
hydrologic,
global
forum
by
donna
prey
and
one
of
the
event
DAF
evangelists,
which
we
can
post
or
or
John,
can
post
to
the
group
afterwards.
The
other
thing
is,
you
know
it's
highly
productive.
I
mean
this
is
true
of
you
know
if
you're
familiar
with
functional
versus
declarative,
declarative
versus
procedural
I'm
on,
but
more
than
that,
it's
a
very,
very,
very
business
focused
language.

So
a
lot
of
the
cruft,
if
you
will,
is
hidden
from
view
and
that's
that's
the
whole
power
of
abstraction
intuitive.
Yes,
there's
a
learning
curve,
but
once
you
get
beyond
that,
the
concepts
are
very,
are
very
clear,
very
easy
to
understand,
and
it's
you
know
it's
it's
being
widely
used.
It's
trusted
by
people
like
the
Australian
Stock
Exchange,
who
implementing
an
entire
keyring
him
back
off
his
settlement
system
using
demo.
So
that's
a
major
major
project.

There
are
others
besides
that
I
hasten
to
add,
but
that's
the
one
that
people
probably
have
heard
of
Adam
Kaplan
SVP
emerging
technologies.
This
was
yesterday,
was
asked
on
a
panel
talking
about
enterprise
adoption
of
blockchain.
Why
did
they
choose
sorties
and
the
answer
in
his
words,
is
because
of
its
performance,
its
scalability
and-
and
this
is
very
important
for
Salesforce-
the
ability
to
actually
integrate
it
into
what
Salesforce
is
building
and
the
IP
Salesforce
is
creating.

On
top
of
the
the
core
network,
that's
really
important
to
understand
that
yeah
any
of
these
technologies,
when
you
talk
about
sawtooth,
pays
new
fabric,
doesn't
matter
or
beyond
that,
if
you're
looking
at
quarter
maybe
quorum,
but
certainly
any
of
this
sort
of
any
of
the
core
platforms
are
there
simply
