Part 1 - New Participant Overview Oct 22
A
A
We
strongly
recommend
that
you
download
the
accompanying
slide
deck,
which
you
can
find
Linked
In
the
video
description
it
contains
links
to
many
of
the
pages
and
resources
that
we
mention.
This
tutorial
is
divided
into
three
sections
and
you
are
currently
viewing
section
one.
The
entire
tutorial
can
be
viewed
in
one
approximately
20
minute
block
of
time,
or,
if
you
prefer,
you
can
view
each
section
separately.
A
This
introduction
was
developed
to
help
new
participants
understand
how
to
start
participating
in
the
ietf.
It's
intended
to
be
a
practical
introduction.
As
such,
it
does
not
cover
topics
like
the
history
of
the
ITF
or
how
to
author
an
internet
draft.
Those
topics
are
covered
in
other
tutorials
available
on
our
website.
A
The
mission
of
the
ietf
is
to
make
the
internet
work
better
by
providing
high
quality
relevant
technical
documents
that
influence
the
way
people,
design,
use
and
manage
the
internet.
The
documents
produced
by
the
ITF
are
called
rfcs.
These
documents
may
be
protocol
standards,
informational
documents
such
as
guidance
and
requirements,
experimental
protocol
specifications
or
ietf
process
documents.
A
A
One
of
the
things
that
makes
us
different
from
other
standards
bodies
is
that
anyone
can
participate.
There's
no
membership
in
the
ITF.
All
you
have
to
do
to
become
part
of
a
working
group
is
sign
up
for
its
mailing
list.
Many
working
groups
use
GitHub,
so
you
can
contribute
to
the
document
process
via
their
GitHub
repo
there's,
no
formal
government
role
in
the
ITF
and
there's
no
formal
voting
decisions
are
made
by
rough
consensus,
which
often
includes
humming
more
on
that.
In
a
moment,
the
ietf
does
operate
under
a
set
of
rules.
A
This
is
something
you
will
see
displayed
prior
to
every
iitf
working
group
meeting
the
ietf
notewell.
The
note
well
is
a
reminder
to
iitf
participants
of
our
policies,
such
as
our
code
of
conduct
and
patent
policy
and
disclosure
requirements.
In
addition,
the
notewell
explains
that
when
you
author,
an
iitf
document,
you
are
granting
certain
rights
to
the
ITF
part.
Two
of
the
Noel
contains
links
to
learn
more
about
the
details
of
our
policies.
A
The
ietf
uses
a
lot
of
acronyms
that
can
be
difficult
for
new
participants
to
understand.
Here
are
a
few
of
the
most
common
acronyms
we
use
to
describe
the
different
groups
of
the
ITF
and
how
they
all
fit
together.
There
are
currently
seven
technical
areas
of
the
ietf.
These
are
represented
by
the
darker
blue
circles.
Each
area
is
overseen
by
two
or
three
area
directors.
A
A
The
internet,
research
task
force
or
irtf
is
a
parallel
organization
which
houses
the
research
groups.
Research
groups
hold
sessions
during
the
iitf
meeting
week,
just
like
working
groups,
and
you
are
welcome
to
attend
any
research
group
sessions.
You'd
like
the
irtf
equivalent
of
the
isg
is
the
irsg.
A
The
IAB
also
manages
all
of
the
ietf's
external
relationships
and
Liaisons,
including
appointing
people
to
various
external
positions.
The
ietf
LLC
is
the
administrative
home
of
the
ietf.
It's
responsible
for
non-technical
administration,
like
planning
for
our
meetings
and
signing
contracts.
The
iitf
LLC
also
has
a
board
of
directors.
A
The
real
work
of
the
iitf
gets
done
in
working
groups.
There
are
about
130
working
groups
collected
together
in
these
seven
General
technical
areas.
These
areas
are
not
set
in
stone
over
time.
Areas
are
added,
removed
or
merged
to
reflect
the
work
that's
currently
ongoing
in
the
ITF.
These
are
the
active
areas.
Right
now,
the
ietf
is
led
by
a
chair
who
is
also
the
area
director
for
the
general
area
area
directors,
assume
overall
responsibility
for
the
working
groups
that
fall
under
their
area.
A
A
A
It's
up
to
the
working
group
chairs
in
the
iesg
to
determine
whether
or
not
consensus
has
been
reached.
One
of
the
tools
we
use
to
measure
consensus
is
a
hum
during
a
meeting
session.
Chairs
will
often
ask
for
participants
to
hum
for
or
against
a
proposal.
Humming
may
seem
unusual
at
first,
but
it's
a
unique
characteristic
of
the
ietf.
A
As
you
begin
participating
in
the
ietf,
you
may
already
have
an
idea
of
which
working
groups
you
would
like
to
get
involved
in
reviewing
the
working
group
page
and
joining
the
mail
list
is
a
great
place
to
start.
If
you're
not
sure
what
groups
to
join,
you
can
browse
the
full
list
of
working
groups
and
view
their
charters
in
milestones.
A
If
you
want
to
bring
new
work
to
the
ITF,
we
have
a
whole
tutorial
designed
to
help
with
that.
The
more
interest
you
can
drum
up
ahead
of
time,
the
better
your
chance
of
success
is
talk
with
other
participants,
relevant
area
directors
and
chairs,
write
up
some
initial
drafts
and
get
others
interested
in
your
work.
A
A
A
The
ietf
has
a
unique
culture.
People
tend
to
be
smart,
passionate
and
vocal,
sometimes
that
passion
can
be
overwhelming,
but
people
are
really
just
trying
to
find
the
best
solution.
Technical
excellence
and
topical
knowledge
are
highly
valued,
make
sure
you've
read
the
relevant
documents
before
you
make
a
comment
in
the
session.
A
The
dress
code
is
very
informal,
and
t-shirts
are
common,
whether
we
are
online
or
in
person.
Also
many
IET
offers
have
been
involved
in
the
organization
for
years
and
have
formed
great
friendships.
However,
sometimes
new
participants
can
be
intimidated
by
the
in-crowd
language
developed
over
time.
Generally
speaking,
iitfers
are
happy
to
answer
your
questions
or
point
you
in
the
right
direction,
so
don't
be
afraid
to
introduce
yourself
to
others
and
ask
your
questions.
