InterCommunity 2017 - September 19 2017 - Live panel: Personal Freedom and Rights on Internet for next 25 years

HOST: ISOC Japan Chapter

VENUE: Aoyama Gakuin University, Tokyo

While Internet has been spread into our society, thousands of new cultures and innovations had been developed by people utilizing freedom space such as an e-mail, Web and Social Media. However, we had several incidents (rights violations, limitations on the freedom) that Internet has been abused to control our society and people.

As 25 years’ anniversary of Internet Society, Society and Internet are merged into one world. Now, what kind of positive role the Internet to help solving the issues in areas of personal freedom and human rights should be? From Tokyo, we will discuss and propose to the world.

The session explored questions such as:

To what extent will the Internet be used as a tool to influence and control society rather than promote freedom and human rights?
Will people have meaningful choices to “unplug or disconnect” and determine how they utilize the Internet or will it be unavoidably pervasive?
Will the risks of the Internet to freedom and rights outweigh the benefits to society and the individual? If so, what reaction will this evoke?

InterCommunity 2017 - September 19 2017 - Panel en Vivo: Futuro de Internet y la Brecha Digital

HOSTS: LACNIC e ISOC Uruguay Capítulo

LUGAR: Radisson Montevideo Victoria Plaza Hotel, Montevideo

InterCommunity 2017 - September 19 2017 - Live panel: Will the Internet of Things undermine the Internet of Trust?

HOST: ISOC Switzerland Chapter

VENUE: CERN, Geneva

By 2020, it is expected that 20.4 billion connected devices will get online. But the Internet of “Things” is more than smart grids, self-driving cars and connected wearables: it is very much about the people that use these devices, the data that they share willingly or not, and the potential security risks that these objects can pose for users and the Internet itself.

The convergence of the Internet and physical world promises to bring game changing shifts to the Internet and how it is used. In this context, what are the threats we should anticipate, and what role can different stakeholders play to make sure the IoT doesn’t hurt trust in and on the Internet?

This session explored questions such as:

* What are the privacy and security threats posed by IoT?
* What measures are needed to make IoT more secure? Is mass-encryption a solution?
* What should IoT manufacturers do? Are market-forces sufficient to lead to better security and privacy in IoT?
* Which stakeholders should be involved in IoT governance structures? (e.g. users, policymakers, technical community)

InterCommunity 2017 - September 19 2017 - Live Panel: Personal Freedoms and Rights on Internet

HOST: APNIC + Internet Australia

VENUE: APNIC Office, South Brisbane

PANEL

Personal Freedoms and Rights on Internet

For many, the growth and ubiquity of the Internet is a sign of progress and innovation. For others, however, it may reach a tipping point in the future where the risks to society and freedoms grow faster than the benefits. While the impact on personal freedoms and human rights in a future that is ever more connected is far from clear, it is likely that challenges related to surveillance and the loss of privacy and control over one’s data will become more pressing.

Many participants fear that freedoms and rights will become more fragile and under threat in a hyper-connected world. Some believe that efforts to curtail invasive means of collecting and sharing data may make little headway, particularly with technology advances that will enable more efficient and widespread data collection and analysis. Will the Internet, as one participant suggested, become a “surveillance environment” by both governments and business?

InterCommunity Brisbane node discussed and explored answers and actions to the following questions, particularly in Australian context:

* To what extent will the Internet be used as a tool to influence and control society rather than promote freedom and human rights?
* Will people have meaningful choices to “unplug or disconnect” and determine how they utilize the Internet or will it be unavoidably pervasive?
* Will the risks of the Internet to freedom and rights outweigh the benefits to society and the individual? If so, what reaction will this evoke?

InterCommunity 2017 - September 19 2017 - Live Panel: Will Big Data and Artificial Intelligence Algorithms undermine the Open Internet?

HOST: ISOC Portugal Chapter

VENUE: Centro de Congressos do LNEC, Lisbon

PANEL

Will Big Data and Artificial Intelligence Algorithms undermine the Open Internet?

In the recent years, the Internet has enabled computing at massive scale, worldwide networked systems, interconnecting people and machines, making recommendations and taking decisions, by relying on big data analysis and artificial intelligence algorithms.

This has had many benefits in many areas such as combating spam, personalisation of users’ online experience, fraud detection, medical applications, automated voice interaction, and cost reductions in service provision due to generalized productivity increase.

However, evolution of artificial intelligence can expose the Internet to emerging threats like the spreading of ‘fake news’ and misinformation; large-scale surveillance; privacy violations and rights erosion; intermediators reconstruction; potential job losses; and concentration of power in a small number of Internet-based corporations and organizations.

The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence may negatively impact people’s confidence in the Internet, it’s openness, and accelerate the digital divide between a limited number of winners and those left behind.

This session explored questions such as:

* How to adopt ethical standards and considerations in systems using artificial intelligence and big data? How to ensure their accountability?
* How to ensure a responsible deployment of these systems in a way that humans and laws are in control and they are safe and preserve privacy?
* How to preserve an open and multi stakeholder Internet governance to help shape socio-economic opportunities for all in this new context?

InterCommunity 2017 - September 19 2017 - Live Panel: Future of Internet in Turkey

HOST: ISOC Turkey Chapter

VENUE: Vault Karakoy, Istanbul

OPENING REMARKS
Glenn McKnight - ISOC trustee

PANEL

Future of Internet in Turkey

As the Internet evolves and becomes part of our everyday lives, there are strong trends driving governments to regulate and legislate, particularly from economic and security perspectives and many users expect to see greater government involvement in the future, which might also impose significant costs and negative effects on the economy. As in many other countries worldwide, the netizens of Turkey have concerns for the protection of personal freedoms and rights and the full potential of the Internet as an enabler for growth and innovation is achieved.

The live panel discussion will focus on the future of Internet in Turkey and try to find ways to achieve a shift of narrative to turn challenges into opportunities and to benefit from the Internet fully, as a developing country having so much to offer with its diverse and young population.

The panel is going to address multiple questions, including the following:

* How can policy makers engage in and respond to fast moving technological advances and keep up to date? Will differences in connection technology, quality, and level of Internet openness lead to fundamentally different Internet experiences and levels of opportunity for users in the future?
* What are the main regulatory challenges upon personal rights and freedoms, the market, the industry and the digital economy and how to overcome these challenges?
* What are the economic costs of Intrusive regulations, restrictions and Internet shutdowns and how can these costs be measured?
* What impact does and will government reactions to the changing dynamics of the market and economy have on the industry in the future?
* What is the government strategy to bridge the digital divide in Turkey in the following years?
* Will the risks of the Internet to freedom and rights outweigh the benefits to society and the individual? Does the future hold a light-touch approach to Internet policy and regulation or a more intrusive, cyber-sovereignty approach both from national and regional perspectives?
* Will the future Internet be dominated by closed platforms and proprietary ecosystems or spurred on by open services, open standards, and multi-platform ecosystems? Is the most widely-used on-line services and platforms retain or deepen their market position or face competition and possible replacement by new players in the future. How is the national market shaping up in Turkey?

InterCommunity 2017 - September 19 2017 - Live Panel: Internet Future and the Digital Divide

HOSTS: LACNIC and ISOC Uruguay Chapter

VENUE: Radisson Montevideo Victoria Plaza Hotel, Montevideo

Traditionally, the “Digital Divide” has been defined as the gap between those that have Internet access and those that do not. Internet connectivity is growing around the world and many commenters have expressed hopes that it will be an empowering and equalizing force between social groups and countries. However, the ability to meaningfully participate in and benefit from the Internet in the future will likely be determined by more than the sheer ability to connect. Under this scenario , the future of the internet is facing the following unkowns:

* In a world where everyone has Internet access, will all segments of society have an equal opportunity to meaningfully participate in and benefit from the Internet?
* Will countries with advanced Internet technology, infrastructure, and innovation accelerate their lead or will developing regions close the gap?
* Will differences in connection technology, quality, and level of Internet openness lead to fundamentally different Internet experiences and levels of opportunity for users?

InterCommunity 2017 - September 19 2017 - Live Panel: The Impact of the Internet on Media, Culture, and Society

HOST: ISOC Singapore Chapter

VENUE: Nanyang Technological University, SIngapore

PANEL

The Impact of the Internet on Media, Culture, and Society

In 2016, the Internet Society engaged Members, Chapters, experts and partners through two global surveys that generated more than 2,500 responses from 160 countries and economies, and interviewed more than 130 Internet experts and hosted 10 virtual roundtables. Many respondents were concerned that the Internet could be fundamentally undermined if current technical and social trends around online media and communication are amplified into the future. This included the use of algorithms for curating and delivering news and information resulting in an “echo chamber” effect. Social concerns included the future Internet widening social divides, reinforcing prejudices, and deepening ethnic or societal rivalries. And traditional cultures, languages, and values could be lost in a sea of foreign content. At InterCommunity 2017, the Internet Society Singapore Chapter considers what the impact could be for our society.

The following topics were discussed during the node discussion on Media, Culture and Society:

* Media and the Internet: How can we use the Internet to promote openness and trust in the post-factual media world?
* Culture and the Internet: How can cultures embrace the benefits of the Internet without losing their uniqueness and diversity?
* Society and the Internet: How can the Internet build bridges in society or greater divides?

PANEL:

Personal Freedoms and Rights

With the growth and ubiquity of the ever more connected Internet, the impact on personal freedoms and human rights is far from clear. Some predict a gloomy future: surveillance prevails and there is a loss of privacy and control over ones data by governments and businesses alike; and with the advances of AI and machine learning, decision-making is taken away from individuals. But others see the future Internet growing in its value as a fundamental enabler of free expression, organization, and positive social empowerment.

The panel discussed the key challenges facing Lebanon and the Middle East from a regional perspective, and hopes to come up with relevant actions and/or solutions.

19 Sep 2017

InterCommunity 2017 - September 19 2017 - Theme of the day:
"Future of the Internet and Challenges for the Media, Culture and Society"

HOST: ISOC Senegal Chapter

VENUE: Hotel Radisson Blu, Dakar

The Internet has always been a promising tool for advancing social and cultural understanding. It also offers individuals unprecedented opportunities to connect, speak, be heard and organize socially. The Internet could be fundamentally undermined if the current technical and social trends around the media and online communication are amplified in the future.

The media, understood as a means of disseminating information to a large number of individuals without the possibility of personalizing the message, are perceived as "agents" influencing the construction of opinions and the identity of individuals and "places" collective identification playing a key role in national cohesion. The question of the impact of the Internet on the "classical" media, namely the press, radio and television, must lead to an assessment of the role of the Internet as a media integrating into an existing media landscape and its place in public space.

This will lead to concomitant questioning of this problematic centered on the relationship between media and identity.

Identity, inherited from culture, is indeed another fundamental concept linked to the uses of the Internet. For Dominique Wolton, "collective identity is what unites people in a community, beyond their social inequalities, and through the sharing of language, history, symbols, values gives the feeling and the desire to defend this community [and] in contemporary history, collective identity most often brings together national identity, more or less linked, depending on the contexts, if not the state , at least to institutions ".

During the day, panellists and participants discussed the future of the Internet and in particular the challenges for the Media, Culture and Society by trying to answer the following questions:

* Will the Internet of the future create more bridges between societies and cultures or lead to greater divisions?
Will the Internet make neutral institutions, media and impartial journalism a thing of the past? What will be the impact on society?
* To what extent can different cultures adopt the Internet without fear of losing their own values?

For example, does Mauritius see itself as a leading country in terms of Infrastructure and Internet Technology and what is being doing to catch up with other countries or keep setting the pace? Are all areas of Mauritius equally connected and what is the impact to the Internet Economy for the places that are better connected than others within Mauritius?
