Social Media for Chapters: Facebook
Description
Learn the ins and outs of Facebook social media.
A
Well, hi, everyone, and welcome to this video recording.
A
I'm neville hobson., I'm based in the uk..
I manage social media for the internet society, global accounts.
A
And work with many around the world in helping them make social media effective in what they're doing.
A
so,.
The purpose of this video tutorial today is to share some tips with you on how to get the most from facebook.
A
for chapters,.
Facebook is a preferred channel.
A
For many of you and the way in which you are able to communicate about the internet society in your particular market, and engage with other people,.
A
And so here are some simple tips on making it work well for you., some of you may be doing some of these things,.
Some of you lot are just starting out,.
A
Others of you have been on facebook for a while,, but either way,.
I hope you find this useful.
A
so,.
I'm gonna run through these in this short video,.
A
Just to give you a sense of what's possible.
I'd be happy to answer any questions you have afterwards., you can e-mail, me, or use slack, or any other channel.
Where you'll find me online.
A
So, to start with,, let's have a look at.
A
What we're gonna do?
Here.
so,!
These tips will help you.
A
Become an effective user of facebook.
A
It's focused on organic messaging..
This is not a tutorial about using paid advertising on facebook..
That's a subject of a separate video.
That's coming,.
A
But it's really intended to show you what you can do without spending any money, effectively,.
A
Using a standard facebook business account that you publish.
A
Your organic messaging to,, meaning non-paid.
A
you just post and share content there at no cost to you,.
A
So these tips apply everywhere, and it does require you to spend a little bit of time and energy on setting things up in facebook,.
But once you do, you'll, find it's very worthwhile,.
A
And indeed, that will help you,, particularly in circumstances where you feel, perhaps,, that you don't have a lot of time or effort to do stuff like this..
A
A little bit of investment at the outset will pay dividends in the long-term.
A
So,, let's get started.
A
the first one to me is a very sensible one to think of,.
A
But it's one that sometimes, people tend to not think about.
A
As much as they ought to., it should go without saying,, but you need to be clear as to why you're on facebook., you need to have a goal that you can measure..
A
If you can't measure it,, you shouldn't be doing it..
A
You need to know whether your purpose is worthwhile,.
A
Whether it produces the results you set out, that help you understand what you want to get out of facebook.
so,, the first step, really, is deciding.
Why are you there,.
A
And that can range from things like sharing content with others..
A
That's a valuable goal..
You can then define how to measure that..
A
It could be to engage with others in discussion and conversation in groups or on your own presence, or anywhere else for that matter.
A
So, reasons can be quite varied,, but as long as you have at least one reason.
A
Or one goal that is measurable, you're off to a good start on facebook.
A
You should create and maintain a strong brand presence that helps people find you,, helps people understand what you do when they encounter you.
A
For the internet society,, you may or may not know.
A
There is a resource,, the internet, society, dam., it's available to you,, where you will find branding help for every chapter.
A
There's logos for every chapter available for download.
A
There's typefaces, there's background graphics,, as you can see from the screenshot.
A
there's a lot of resourcing available to chapters on this website, in which case, it makes it very easy for you to present your facebook presence, that strong e-brand before the internet society for your chapter,.
A
And so you just go ahead and grab those and do that..
A
That would be a good thing to do.
If you haven't done that already..
A
I know many of you do, that, in which case, you're off to a very good start already,, but the strong brand presence is pretty important to present you as part of the global internet, society.
A
That helps people understand, literally ahead of time,.
What we stand, for., so,, that understanding level is varied around the world,.
A
So what you do to maintain that strong brand presence is helpful to that end as well.
A
The third tip is the time and effort you need to spend.
A
At the outset, to create your facebook, profile,.
A
And this can be quite straightforward,, but it might surprise you that too many organisations,.
A
Generally, speaking, and lots of others, other people,.
A
Really don't add much information to the user, profile.
A
So,, when someone encounters your page on facebook,.
A
If they don't know much about you, they'll, look at the about page and try and get a sense of who you are and what you're about.
A
and what you're seeing on the screen is the global account for the internet, society.
A
This particular view shows you, literally,, the bare minimum information.
A
location,, some contact information, little bit of detail.
A
About when you started out there and a very simple description that is about.
A
Who you are and what you do, a website address as well.
A
When you have the editor view,, this is showing you the general access view,.
A
But if you have the editor, view,, meaning you've logged into your facebook,, you will see a lot more fields available for editing.
A
So, you can provide as much information, literally, as you want., there's quite a bit of space.
There.
the main point, though, is to ensure you've got something.
A
As a bare minimum at the very least., if you have more time and effort, and energy to do, it,, add more., but the bare minimum is what you see on the screen,, and you should include that in your facebook.
Profile,.
A
That enables people to find out a bit about you when they land on the page.
that can make all the difference between whether they share your content, engage with you, stick around, or just leave..
A
So it's worth doing.
A
a good idea that gives you an opportunity.
A
To populate your webpage,, your facebook page,.
A
With content, is to list events.
A
if you're holding events for your chapter,.
A
Or if you're participating or somehow involved.
A
In an event that isn't to do with the chapter but you're part of it,, that's worth posting about.
A
On your facebook page., there is a section that enables to you do that, and it's in a sense, think of it as a ready-made source of content.
A
You can share on your site that others will find useful.
A
So,, if someone's searching for an event on facebook, for instance,, the chances are high, that if you got a listing of it, that will show up in the search results too..
A
So it helps the casual visitor,.
But it also helps.
A
Others you're already engaged with to know that.
A
In one of the main accounts they follow, ie, you, they'll, find useful information about what the internet society in your location is up.
To.
A
So it's worth doing..
If you publish this kind of information anyway, someplace else,, then it makes it even easier to share it on facebook.
So it's definitely worth doing.
A
the other source of easy content to give.
A
To people, if blog posts,, if you publish a blog, that makes it very simple., if you don't publish a blog, then a ready source of relevant information for your audience.
A
Would be chapter content published.
A
On the global internet site in the blog.
A
So you'll see on the screen, for instance, there is a blog post about rural libraries in armenia,.
A
And the armenia chapter was very directly involved in that.
A
So that's a very relevant story for the armenia's chapter community on facebook,.
A
So that would be worth sharing..
So if there's anything there related to you,, you could do exactly the same as well.
all.
It requires it to visit the blog post concerned on the global internet society.
Website,.
A
And copy the link, literally into facebook.
A
You could do it manually by clicking or tapping.
A
On the facebook share button on the webpage or set it up directly from within your facebook, page,.
A
And that gives you better control over what content you might wanna do,, you might wanna personalise it,, add an intro to it or something.
this point.
Is,.
It gives you a ready source of content.
A
You can share with your community..
A
You can also ask your network to share your posts.
A
This screen shows an example of how that might happen.
A
One individual who shared a post, posted in this case by the philippines chapter on their facebook page, and that person shared it.
A
Now,, I don't know whether he was asked to,, possibly not,.
It looks spontaneous, and there's always that too of course,, but it doesn't hurt to ask..
If you publish something that you would like, others.
A
To share, or you think it really might appeal to them,.
A
It doesn't hurt to ask them directly,, and you can do that through writing a post publishing it on your facebook page..
A
All of that helps amplify the content.
You produce,.
A
That creates a potential demand for people to come and discover it,.
A
It gives them more things that they might not know that they're interested in..
So all these things add up, to providing.
A
The people in your community with a reason to engage with you, and you're providing content.
A
That they probably find useful.
A
the likelihood is high that they're going to share it as well,, in which case that is all a good thing.
A
Another thing you might think about too in terms of engagement with your community is creating your own facebook groups,, such as the example you see on the screen, from the internet society, bangladesh chapter,, who have done exactly that..
A
They created a public group on facebook,.
A
You can also create a private group if you want to,, but they chose to create a public group,, meaning that the content that people share, and the discussions that happen in that group, are open to the community generally in facebook,.
A
And that opens up the opportunity and the likelihood.
A
Of more people being exposed to that content and seeing what's going there, and they might want to join, if they find it relevant to them,, probably if they're in bangladesh more than likely..
A
So that's something that is one of the features of facebook,.
A
It's very easy to set that up, and it might be worth doing in your circumstance too..
A
So it's another idea to think about as a means of engaging with people.
A
The eighth tip here is linked to that,, which is to join conversations in other facebook, groups.
A
So if you find others, and you can search for this,.
A
So I search for a keyword for instance, that you think is relevant, internet governance for instance,, and you come up with a list of people who are talking about that topic, including in groups if there are any.
A
and if you find one that's on a topic- let's say internet governance, that interests you and you think, would interest your community,.
A
You could participate in that group..
So you would leave a comment perhaps, what someone else is saying, or you might write a comment,.
A
An original comment yourself on a particular issue: that's happening in your country, for example.
A
and that exposes that facebook group to your thinking as the internet society chapter in your country.
and over time,.
That can be very helpful, in people's perceptions of you in terms of a source.
A
Of valuable information,, but also perhaps as a subject matter, expert on a topic, and that's always a good thing.
As well..
A
The ninth tip, reach out to others in your network,.
A
Start highlighting the achievements of others.
A
Who are part of your network.
that doesn't have a particular angle from the internet society, but is relevant to the network,.
A
To the community, and over time again, people will appreciate that, and they will reciprocate.
A
so,.
Here is a page that shows a lot of activity going on in guatemala, for instance,, with photographs of people at events and things like that.
A
These are ways you can reach out to others in your network,.
A
To ask people, for instance, for their photos when they attend an event.
That's either your event or another related event by somebody else,, and you can share the pictures on your facebook page.
A
people like that kind of collaboration,, and it's definitely worthwhile..
It builds up a picture of you as a great community, contributor and originator.
A
And that's definitely a good thing.
A
And the final one,, which is also one that you could argue, is the beginning point as well,, but it is actually sprinkled throughout your time on facebook,, which is to study the analytics information that facebook provides.
A
This screenshot shows a typical view,.
A
This is from the global internet.
Society account.
A
On facebook,, showing a range of information,.
A
Page views, page likes,, post engagements,, video views,.
A
Etc.,, how many followers, new followers, rather that have come in this particular time frame,, which was the last week of december 2018, and into the first week of january 2019 as well, actually.
A
These are things that educate you on helping.
A
You understand how the content is working,, and indeed your other activities..
Is it doing what you set out to do at the very beginning, that goal you established.?
A
Does it help you measure whether it's been worthwhile or not.?
It would also provide you other information, as you get to use your facebook presence, more,.
A
On things, like, for example,, post engagements,.
A
So, each of these little snippets you see on the screen, you can actually drill into to learn more specific information about the particular metric that is being shown.
A
and that's always handy,.
So a post, you publish, you think, is going to get a lot of attention, for some reason it didn't..
Why is that?
the metrics might give you a reason.
A
or the reverse., something you posted that you didn't expect to do.
An awful lot suddenly got a lot of attention..
A
Why was that?
was something going on, did somebody influential share it?.
A
Do you see a spike in the page likes, for instance.
A
So all of these things are useful to give the insights into whether your content is working well and helping you achieve that measurable goal.
You've set out..
A
This is available as part of facebook,.
A
It's free,, it's not as sophisticated as some other tools that you have to pay for, but this can be good enough to give you the snapshot.
Views on what will help you be successful on facebook.
A
So to summarise,, these are just 10 tips that will help you in maximising your presence on.
A
Facebook and presenting you in a way that gets attention from others who want to come and be part of your presence on facebook and share your community.
A
So I hope you found this useful,.
Let me know if you'd like to know any more about this, and look out for more videos coming soon.
A
So thanks very much for watching this one.
