africa
operations

output
and
he's
going
to
talk
today
about
what
what
makes
him
exciting
to
wake
up
every
day
in
the
morning
and
work
on
the
projects
that
he
is
involved
with.
So,
having
said
that
john
floor
is
yours
and
looking
forward
to
what
you
have
to

once

name's
ron.
I
started
working
with
the
cardano
project
as
a
whole
around
five
years
ago
now,
so
it
was
one
of
the
first
employees
I
started
off
in
the
cardano
foundation
and
then
made
my
way
over
to
input
output
after
about
a
year
and
a
half
two
years
in
this
year,
originally
in
cf,
I
was
focused
on
exchange
negotiatings
negotiations.

Getting
us
listed
onto
our
first
exchange,
bittrex
helping
set
up
the
cf
work
on
some
of
the
regulatory
stuff
that
goes
around
setting
up
a
new
crypto
very
quickly.
I
realized
that
I
really
didn't
want
to
work
on
the
market
side.
Apart
from
anything,
the
hours
are
terrible,
you're
constantly
being
woken
up
at
4am
to
speak
to
lawyers.
If
you
are
very
unhappy
with
you,
so
after
doing
my
time
in
this
year,
I
started
to
think
a
bit
more
about.

You
know
why
golden
involved
in
the
space
at
the
beginning,
and
for
me
this
was
a
tedx
talk
that
charles
gave
him
bermuda
where
he
started
to
really
talk
about
how
the
value
of
blockchain
technology
was
to
make
finance
more
efficient
and
therefore
promote
financial
inclusion
for
the
billions
of
people
across
the
world
that
don't
have
it,
and
that
was
a
message
that
had
really
resonated
with
me.
So
I
thought
I'd
want
to
go
back
to
basics.
So
I
pitched
charles
on
the
idea
of
setting
up
an
africa
division.

For
me,
this
means
enabling
a
smallholder
farmer
to
no
longer
only
be
able
to
raise
finance
from
his
local
cooperative
at
rates
of
40
to
80
a
year,
but
also
to
be
able
to
use
the
liquidity
on
cardano
and
to
share
the
share
his
digital
identity
across
the
internet
and
enable
that
to
work
out
for
him.
So
sorry,
guys,
you'll
have
to
bear
with
me
for
one

whilst
I
replug

my

very
representative:

that's

know
this
is
basically
the
concept
we're
running
with.
You
know:
how
do
we
solve
real
world
problems
and
how
do
we
solve
the
things
that
are
stopping
people
from
accessing
the
innovations
of
blockchain
and
crypto?
So
the
major
one
which
I'd
like
to
talk
about
today
briefly
is
otala
prison.
So
when
I
moved
to
ethiopia
three
and
a
half
years
ago,
four
years
ago,
I
actually
tried
to
pitch
the
government
and
private
sector.

The
benefits
of
a
payment
system
on
crypto
rails
faster,
cheaper
programmable,
but
what
we
realized
is
without
the
foundational
identity.
It
wasn't
that
useful.
You
need
identity
to
do
kyc.
You
need
identity.
If
I
want
to
provide
someone
with
a
loan,
so
this
was
one
of
the
things
we
first
set
out
to
solve.
Atala
prism.
Does
this:
we
are
getting
huge
buy-in
from
nation-states
across
the
continent,
but
also
more
broadly
across
the
world
who
are
interested
in
using
a
target
prism
to
rebuild
their
national
identity
systems.

We've
also
got
private
sector
interests.
We're
launching
a
telecoms
company
in
zanzibar
with
world
mobile.
Every
subscriber
is
going
to
be
using
an
otala
prism
identity
so
from
the
perspective
of
catalyst,
and
where
I
get
very
interested
is
that
we
have
just
done
the
first
step
of
building
this
identity
solution
very
soon,
it's
going
to
be
open
source
and
what
we'll
look
for
the
community
to
do
is
to
start
building
the
tools
on
top
of
this,
to
actually
make
it
really
really
useful.

I've
always
seen
my
role
as
front
running
what
the
community
and
what
the
industry
is
going
to
need,
but
taking
it
only
up
to
a
certain
point,
where
we
hand
over
the
keys
to
the
proverbial
kingdom
to
the
community
to
start
developing
on
top
of
it,
and
you
know
that's
how
you
get
scaled,
that's
how
we
really
we.
We
really
do
the
promise
which
cardinal
has
set
out
to
do
so.
That's
the
identity
component,
the
portion
after
which
I'd
like
to
talk
about,
is
how
amazing
the
catalyst
fund
is.

So
this
whole
concept
of
people
being
able
to
get
unrestricted
funding
without
huge
reporting
requirements
which
typical
ngos
have
forced
upon
african
startups,
is
completely
revolutionary.
What
I've
seen
often
in
ethiopia
is
people
for
thirty.
Forty
thousand
dollar
grants
having
to
spend
twenty
five
thousand
dollars
of
that
on
reporting
requirements.

So
this
entire
concept
of
catalyst
is
already
creating
massive
waves
across
the
continent.
I
mean
I've
walked
into
to
a
hotel
actually
in
addis,
and
someone
had
stuck
up
a
project.
Catalyst
proposal
deadline
that
nothing
to
do
with
me,
and
this
is
really
showing
how
we're
starting
to
to
really
disrupt
a
lot
of
the
common
ideas
about
how
you
do
stuff.
The
second
thing
I'll
add
on
to
that
is,
you
know,
we're
also
interested
in
helping
build
beyond
the
early
stage
amounts.
The
catalyst
wins
you.
D
So
we're
going
to
be
announcing,
probably
in
the
september
summit,
a
relatively
small
venture
capital
fund
to
be
able
to
invest
in
companies,
who've
come
out
from
catalyst
and
need
a
bit
more
capital
to
be
able
to
take
their
ideas
to
the
next
stage.
So
I'm
not
just
thinking
about
catalyst
amounts,
though
catalyst
grows
exponentially,
but
also
what
do
you
do
for
your
next
round?

And
then
your
series
a
and
your
series
b
and
all
of
the
traditional
venture
cycles,
which
we
also
want
to
think
about
so
from
this
from
our
perspective
from
io
africa,
we're
incredibly
excited
we've
got
interests
all
across
the
continent
on
the
most
senior
levels.
We
feel
that
our
identity
product
is
is
pretty
special
and
really
what
we're
looking
to
do
is
now
engage
with
the
community
to
take
it
to
the
next
level
and
also
support
us,
as
we
bring
up
more
innovative
front-running
products
a
bit
by
guitar
prism.

the
different
needs

different
parts

africa

that
very
important
pillar

our
efforts

you

very
central
figure
to
that.

behalf

the
entire
community,
not
just
the
catalyst
us

that
we
appreciate
the
efforts

everything
that
is
being
done

ground

there's
still

work

Is
there
anything
that,
outside
of
what
you've
already
been
experiencing
with
the
catalyst
like?

you

that's
just
one
aspect
of
something
that
we're
decentralizing
our
community
efforts.
Once

Cardano
needs
community
support,
so
we're
going
to
be
funding
an
initial
space
of
work
to
have
25
different
countries
in
africa
having
regular,
meet-ups,
regular
community
events,
regular
trainings,
but
after
the
first
go
rounds
this
in
itself
should
be
funded
and
put
within
this
market
mechanism.

anything
you
can
think
of

believe
will
drive,
value
for
cardano
can
probably
be
put
within
catalyst,
and
if
it
can't,
if
you
think
it's
too
strategic
or
too
much
money,
then
that's
also
something

output

engage

to
feel
like
we're
covering
the
gamut
of
the
different
ways
in
which
people
would
like
to
build
on
cardano

that's
really
exciting.

me,

be
a
tiny
little
mom

pop
shop.

almost

a
melting
pot
of

vast
past
blockchain
community.

amazing

of

the

of
scenarios

spend
the
vast
majority
of
their
time
and
resources
to
frankly
fill
out
administrative
reports.

one

yeah
we
want

make
this
light
touch
for

that
are
being
funded,
but
we

people

project

could
we

work

those

potential

participating

learning

the
catalyst

to
break

them

moving

just

the
very
beginning

where
we

what's
happening

we're

lot

is

easy

constraints

miss

learn

keep
track

any
one
person

one
entity
as

because

spend

the
influx

why
is
that?

because
we
are
decentralized
right
and
the
process
is
not
meant
for,
like
just

people
in
a
fund

meant

in

meant
for
tens

hundreds
of
thousands
of
people
to
work
down
the
line
to
collaborate
and
not
to
be
governed
by
a
single
entity
or
a
person.

everything
you're
experiencing
that's

okay,

it's
something
we
all

to
figure
out
together,
and
this
is
why
we
meet
every
week
in
town
halls
like
these,
and
we
try
to
talk
and
find
solutions
to
the
problems
that
we
see
so
the
question.

how
are
we
going
to
use
our
time?

we
can
actually
focus

what
matters.

as
we
know,
proposers
are
about
to
start
a
journey.
Their
proposal
journey
this
this
week
with
their
submissions,

this

all
about
putting
up
the
draft
this

You

putting
up
your
final
solutions,
just
the
drafts.
It's
not
the
final
document,
so
really
focus
on
problem
statements,
which
is
like
really
when
you
think
about
it,
the
most
important
part
of
any
of
your
proposals
and
that's
what
is
really
designed
to
be
at
the
forefront
of
the
attention
of
the
community
right.

start
talking
about
the
solution
this
week,
but
you
you
don't
need
to
go
into
a
great
super
detail
right,
maybe
just
a
very
high
level.

are
totally

plenty

proposals

in

changes

need
to
be
made
to
give
them
the
best
rating

when
you
write

feedback

rent
like

missing
a
budget

your
proposal
is
crap
like
no
tell
them
like.
What
exactly
are
you
looking
for?
You

give
proposers
