Building the Mesh, Liam White (IBM)

A deep dive on why and how Istio leverage Envoy to build the service mesh. In this talk, we will cover why Istio uses Envoy, how it configures Envoy and how Pilot operates as Envoy's discovery service(s). Liam is a core contributor to Istio, joining the project in its pre-alpha days back in March 2017. His work is focused on the Pilot, proxy and istioctl components.

We dive into Istio's Pilot, the component responsible for programming the sidecar Envoy proxies that make up the Istio service mesh. We explore the what and how of Pilot, touching upon config ingestion, Envoy config serving, potential failure modes, and finally end with a look forward at where Pilot will be heading.

Speaker blurb:

Zack Butcher works at Google as one of the core contributors to Istio, focusing on networking. Prior to Istio he worked on a variety of teams across Google Cloud Platform, focusing on authorization, policy, data retention, and the internal system Istio draws from.

Istio: Sailing to a Secure Services Mesh [I] - Spike Curtis, Tigera & Dan Berg, IBM

Istio is an open platform that provides a uniform way to connect, manage, and secure microservices. In this presentation we describe the security features of the Istio service mesh: how it helps you secure service-to-service communication across clouds without application code changes, provide robust identity and strong authentication, and enforce powerful authorization policies for your applications. We discuss the current project status and look ahead to the roadmap for security features.

About Dan Berg
As a Distinguished Engineer within the IBM Cloud unit, Daniel is responsible for the technical strategy, and implementation of the containers and microservices platform available in IBM Cloud. Within this role, Daniel has deep knowledge of container technologies including Docker and Kubernetes and has extensive experience building and operating highly available cloud-native services. Daniel is also a core contributor to the Istio service mesh project.

About Spike Curtis
Spike Curtis is a lead developer on Istio working for Tigera. He was also a core developer for Calico and worked on the initial integrations with Docker, Kubernetes and Mesos. Spike earned his PhD from the University of Oxford where he worked on quantum computing with ion traps. He has also worked for Silicon Valley start-ups Palantir Technologies and Rigetti Computing.

Setting Sail with Istio [B] - Lachlan Evenson, Microsoft

Even with Kubernetes, doing microservices is hard. In this session we will dive into Istio, A platform that builds on Kubernetes primitives and simplifies building and securing microservices. This session is a soup to nuts walkthrough of the Istio architecture along with diving into deploying a microservice onto Istio from a user perspective. For those interested in learning more about Istio, this session is a great introduction and will be very hands on.

About Lachlan Evenson
Lachlan Evenson is a cloud native evangelist and mercenary. Lachlan has spent the last two and a half years working with Kubernetes and enabling cloud native journeys. He is a believer in open source and is an active community member. Lachlan spends his days helping make cloud native projects run great on Azure.

Microservices are here to stay. When applied properly, microservices techniques and culture ultimately help us continuously improve business at a faster pace than traditional architecture. However, microservices architecture itself can be complex to configure. All of a sudden, we are faced with the need for a service discovery server, how do we store service metadata, make decisions on whether to use client side load balancing or server side load balancing, deal with network resiliency, think how do we enforce service policies and audit, trace nested services calls.... The list goes on.

Sure, it's easy to have a single stack that makes everything work provided there are good microservices support - but what if you have a polyglot environment? How would you make sure all of the stack can address the same concerns in a consistent way? This is where a service mesh comes in.

In this talk, Ray will introduce Istio, an open source service mesh framework created by Google, IBM, and Lyft. We'll see how the service mesh work, the technology behind it, and how it addresses aforementioned concerns.

# Ray Tsang
Ray is a Developer Advocate for the Google Cloud Platform. Ray had extensive hands on cross-industry enterprise systems integration delivery and management experiences during his time at Accenture, managed full stack application development, DevOps, and ITOps. Ray specialized in middleware, big data, and PaaS products during his time at Red Hat while contributing to open source projects, such as Infinispan. Aside from technology, Ray enjoys traveling and adventures.
