And hi everyone we're moving along uh we're in uh already next session. uh This one is uh about jakarta, ee and microprofile, uh the good parts, and it's uh as soon as you know, it's it's a slideless. You know that is uh with adam bean, and I have. I became aware that some of you were really waiting for this session, so I don't want to take away from um adam or from the um slideless session so adam.

Why don't you take it away and uh I just want to mention this is the second time we have um adam on jakarta e live stream, and uh don't you dare uh uh ruin that record for next year, adam.

So you are like, I don't know whether you know the john gage from java one. This was one. I don't know what role of john was at the java one keynotes at sun microsystems times, but he always said you know who attended the first java one stand up and then the second one and so forth, and now we can do it, but the virtual event is really hard.

So we had a chat with tanya.

The last time last year I had similar session, but the problem was, I was a kind of a dj. I don't know how to call it moderator, probably, and I spent 20 hours at the conference and at night tanya told me, go to sleep. You know. Probably. I was.

My explanation were no more reasonable up to 20 hours, so now I'm um only 45 minutes this year. For me, okay, jakarta and microprofit, the good parts almost slideless still enjoy java and jakarta ie and microprofile. This is still what I am doing, and this year is crazy. I had actually the most projects, the most conferences and zero traveling so zero that time, which was which is uh actually good for programmers right. So um now um I've read a blog uh from time to time and there are um workshops.

um Aix live a little bit more interesting is virtual events and uh ahex fm is a podcast with a lots of micro profile, java and jakarta e sessions. So I already had you know people from from payara corkus helidone whitefly.

So if you're interested in microprofile jakarta check out the podcast, so um the microprofile workshops are around the corner. There are in two days, so probably it's too late. You know to register, but it will come probably next year as well. So some online courses- and um this is probably the most reasonable slide. I have for you the first monday of the month. I'm answering all the questions and uh yesterday there were more than 20 questions, so it was really great event.

So um I had spent one hour and I think, 20 minutes answering all the questions, and this was my last slide so uh see you next year, almost now I have to open my terminal and first find it where it is. So what I would like to do is to explain you the uh best parts from jakarta e and microprofile, and I have to say there are almost no bad parts anymore, because more and more stuff gets going to be duplicated or pruned.

For instance, you know soap and the uh how it's called the uh soap like registries and stuff, which was, I would say, which is not that you know exciting or exciting. Not that useful, exciting is a different story, not that useful in in uh in uh current project uh is going to be removed from jakarta ee in one point of time, and and it was never part of micro profile.

Okay, this is a jakarta ee specifications. This um and this is a set of apis, and um I call I call them the boring apis, because why boring they are stable and I don't expect you know a a complete change in the apis. Okay, now the namespace was changed, which is basically search and replace, but there will be no, I think, no revolution anymore, which is a very good thing, because uh if jakarta, you will you know change every other day.

It will be never as popular as it is today, so and um and the maker profile, on the other hand, uh is and by the way I really appreciate this is the uh the website for micro profile, and this is somehow new.

I always had to find you know this, this diagram somewhere, but now it's a part of the microprofile page so um and, as you can see, the cdi jsonp jack soros and jason b- and this is the cdi and if you search for jason, with jason biden and jason p, so um it means the um how to call it. Microprofile borrowed some specs from jakarta e and um most of the jakarta runtimes are using um our understanding.

Of course, all the jakarta especs and all the microprofile specs so today I would like to combine both and show you uh why both is actually really useful and it doesn't make a lot of sense to uh just focus on micro profile or just focus on jakarta e, because uh you know both projects are actually actually eclipse projects.

Both teams are actually com are comprising the same developers, and uh this is almost the same community and what's what's different, I would say, is the release cycle, which is also a good thing, so um the micro profile stuff um is usually all these specs are more or less dictated or the content of the spec is how to call it is influenced by uh communities.

Non-Java communities like cloud or non-java, not not exclusive java communities like cloud native foundation or or, for instance, the um I was called open, ap specification right um and uh the jakarta ages was, like you know the group of jakarta or java e server providers right, okay, so this is like now the theory behind and what I actually wanted to do at the conference or I was actually too early.

So um this is just um what what happened there was another conference called jdd and I was invited to the conference, and um so I delivered a talk. This was kika's java back-end, so it was about micro profile, but the interesting part is eight years ago. That's me and, uh as you can see, also a similar ide, it was netbeans, I guess six um or seven with java six. What I did back then was that with the talk java future is now, but it's not evenly distributed.

Yet I've wrote on stage eight years ago a java, 6 app and deployed that to glassfish and what I did during the talk. I don't like to do it again, because I can watch the talk. I migrated this app to current whitefly and current jdk and the interesting part you should watch it. I just I just deleted some maven plugins.

This was actually the migration and it worked out of the box, and this is what I really appreciate in jakarta is that you can actually rely on the stability of the apis and even now we have the name space change, but this is not like you know. We get complete different api semantics, we get different name spaces, so it's still stable and um and what I also did is um another youtube video. I migrated this example to the newest, jakarta ee 9 apis.

I wanted to do this right now, but after me there is a different talk uh which uh shows the eclipse, tooling and and the project. So I don't like to repeat that. Okay, now, um let's start so, what I would like to do today is uh back. Then there was glass fish. So let's use paera today was what paera is just an example. I could use a white flyer or open liberty, but payara is, like you know the child of glass fish like a child, less buggy, child of the father, glass fish.

I would say- and so this is what I also use in some projects. I think uh payara is here, so what I usually do is um I start with installing payara and what the script does is unzips. Basically, so it is the simplest possible uh script. What it really does is remove payra home and unzip payara and now it's installed, and I would like to double check that I have java 11 and it's 11 and then I hope that I can start the pyara.

Where is it? Okay start payara and the payara? This is the cold start. It starts okay, so let's use payara today, okay, so now.

um What I also would like to do is to use my archetype and I actually introduced the archetype. um Let's call it jakarta one jayco jakarta one nice name and uh where's my id.

um I got questions and devoxx ukraine. People ask me why I use visual studio code. So now today I use the netbeans and I guess I get tomorrow, questions on twitter. Why I'm using netbeans and not visual studio code, um and the answer is I I actually like to use both. So it takes a while because uh yeah, because it scans now the junk folder and tries to find the uh maven, so it takes longer. As usual.

Probably you know the screencast software or I will have to restart that and in worst case I will launch visual studio code. I actually don't care this is then. I think because let's do this.

Open the netbeans and open the projects, and then I need the project exactly in the junk folder.

We had the chat before the show in the green rooms, like uh everyone expects that something will break, and I really would like to use netbeans today. I don't know why it takes so long, usually no problem, but if it doesn't work I will use the studio code. So this is oh you see, and what I guess is um I didn't index the maven vice here and this was the problem. So what I would just like to do is to remove the parent, so I don't need the parents- um and here so.

This is my stock maven project I or maven setup, and today I don't like to use the experimental features from jdk. So I can just remove the preview setting here and usually it's a way easier or way simpler than this, and uh so we can use java.

11 is enough, so um we have java 11 and I would explain you what this is about and they have two projects as st and the micro service project and the microservice project has jakarta a dependency, not nine yet, but I use currently jakarta e 18 projects, not nine and micro profile, three three and it uses uh maven or jupiter junit. Five, that's the setup. Okay. This is already java, 11., so, okay, um what's inside they have two projects and one parent, and um so first I have this is juxtas.

So this is like where microprofile and jakarta are sharing, and this is a pink resource and, as you can see, I already using here microprofile config, which itself is great, so um this microprofit comes with the ability to inject um different types of uh key value, pairs from uh from from from property files into java classes and constructors and so forth, but they can be overwritten with uh environment entries and system properties, which is really usable for kubernetes and docker.

Okay, and we have the ping resource uh here, which is jack sores with the injected property, and we think jakarta ee today, nine with microprofile three something. Okay. Now uh I think the payer is running yeah, it is and uh just switch to jayco and I've wrote a small tool called what and don't um use the netbeans plugin. What it does is.

It now builds the war which is 4k and deploy the war to all servers I have which comprising here um piranha cloud, payara, uh whitefly, tommy, open liberty and whiteway, I think um yeah, and um so this is. Did you see the servers here? Upper liberty, exactly okay? um So what it basically means is now it should be available.

Curl localhost uh it was 8080, j, job, jakarta, one uh resources and pink, and it works with nine, and this is basic functionality. What I get now from microprofile is basically out of the box, the metrics, um the application metrics, which are empty and um and open api as a default. So this is what I usually show so now. um The first thing, let's see so this is like this will run on micro profile and jakarta, but um let's do something which will only run on jakarta e and no more on pure micro profile runtimes.

What I can do here is, I can say I would like to save the pink, pink and uh use here.

Sorry, post and uh yeah there should be enough and what I can do right now I can say I only would like to have a size, a size of which should be minimum of two so and this is bin validation and the bin validation uh is a jakarta api which is not available in microprofile by default. Having said that, of course, in quarkus or helidon, you can just add bin validation, but uh it is not a part of microprofile, but it's very usable, so um the implementation is hibernate validator.

So with that, and let's see whether my word deployed that it seems it works, so it throws some arrows because uh what uses behind the scenes, I think maven maven them better and the embedder uses an ancient extreme library and it throws some warnings, so I will um we'll have to port it to jdk 11.. I hope this this year is going to be more time to fix such issues, but uh yeah it was. This is busy busy a year. So now, um let's see so we have this and let's try to do that.

Post minus d and say duke and maybe see the I and uh I'm the content, type content type is going to be text plain. I forgot to tell the consume and no content, which is good news, uh and you see this is the response, so it seems to work and uh now, let's go with one character and I get bad requests. So this is a bean validation working out out of the box. So um this is the first thing, the next thing, which is really which comes from or okay.

So now now we have that and um what usually happens in project. What I tend to do is I do the counted so the content annotation comes from microprofile and this is a great way to start developing, because what I'm curious, whether something is working behind the scenes right and what count it does it introduces. So if I will start, let's say I do it again so and now I can call my matrix api.

And, as you can see, I know that is invoked once and I see the safe total evo invokes once what's all very useful they're, currently in a kind of a task force uh with where we try to fix performance and- and we had the issue that our system is communicated with different other systems. We suspect the other system are too slow and what we can do, for instance, you can uh add, for instance, a tag here and the tag we can say.

Let's say the layer is the boundary, and this is not in our case, but you can say: okay, look, this is like the boundary, and if this is the boundary, I know exactly. Okay now uh the transactions are coming in. uh This is the boundary of the system, so every call is basically a transaction, so we can have a layer, control or a layer integration right. So um so this a tank is very useful, because if I do it again um so now, I will have to do it this and call it again.

You see here total layer, boundary here so now in prometheus or grafana. I can just you know, search for tech boundary and I would see you know how performant are the transactions or how fast a transaction of my system, so um so this is actually or actually really nice.

So um so we have this and then the next one which is not available. So this is now from micro profile, which is really useful in jakarta e. Now I would like to show you something which comes with jakarta ee, which is extremely useful, and it's absolutely not available in any micro profile, and these are web sockets.

So um let's say how to call it: let's call it ping ping socket, actually endpoint and or echo echo and pawn so, and it is enough actually to say this is the server end point and usually what I always do wrong in projects is. I always forget the slash here and I do it always right in the sessions. So somehow I remember in the session about the slash 11 projects, so um public void uh in it and uh I get the session.

This is the websocket session, so for the initialization and the api is really nice I'll show you why? Because it is identical to javascript actually on open- and here I can say this session- equals session and.

And then I can just do that and then uh on message and I just can use the message. It's going to be automatically visualized and on.

Just do this as well for debug purposes, so now we have it. Okay, now.

Session get async remote is better because it doesn't throw a transaction, so it's better for for only for online sessions, and I can just send text and say echo message and um I could actually use optional, but I think it is better to do or easier message equals no and completely wrong if the session no not equals. Now just do that. So I think this is enough. So what we have now we created a um an endpoint server endpoint, uh which is going to be application.

Okay, nice, so application scope, server, endpoint. um We are almost done now what a question: how to test that. um So, uh let's try to test that very quickly and.

So uh now I need my visual studio code open the code here. Is it so? um In java javascript land, it's almost identical. uh Zoro cat equals new web zocat.

The protocol is ws, it will be localhost, uh 8080, jcoe, slash echo so and then a socket on open is like uh lambda. Then I can. I need a block and uh console.log to be careful. Knows. System.Printlet, doesn't work here and say um opening opening this here and then I can say socket.send.

Hello from javascript from js and uh what I forgot is to do socket, socket dot on message and write, something here and say, and this is like lambda in javascript.

Okay, so this is uh what, as you can see, there's on open on message and we have exactly the same api in jakarta: ie. Actually, um oh yeah! This is a typo, but it doesn't matter. So, let's see what the browser does and if we open that you see. Oh, it already works a web standards opening event and, let's see at the uh at the jakarta e part, uh we get endpoint init on message. So.

It actually is working what I just forgot on the java side, I forgot actually to print out the message which is begin arrow message.

So now uh done so reload that, and uh let's see what happens, do it again.

Hello from js, so, um for instance, the web sockets are only possible with jakarta e, so microprofit doesn't come with uh web sockets. Okay, now jakarta, ig has concurrency and microprofile comes with uh fault torrents. They are somehow similar and not only for torrents. There is the. um I think it's called context, propagation, which are similar apis, but in one point of time they are going to be probably unified, so we covered web sockets, then another useful thing. I use all the time in jakarta e projects, and this is uh a surprise.

um This is that jax or s client, it's perfectly useful for uh or perfectly usable and very useful to implement system testing. So um how this looks. Usually this is what I do in my projects. Actually, all the time I don't use rest assured, I don't use the jax or s client anymore.

I use the rest interface and the reason being is: if you have the interface, you can reuse the interface as a micro service, client and the advantage of this interface is, you can put on this interface interface, micro profile, matrix and fault tolerance, um annotations and this works. You cannot put you know the annotations of the juxtas client, so this is um advantage of microprofile over jakarta e. So, okay, now I have the uh the client- and this is my integration test.

So what it basically means is, if I go here to my uh jco, actually great name jayco uh to my system test and I perform the compile.

Fail safe phase, safe integration test, it will perform the tests and it says that.

General tests, oh.

Yeah, as you can see, android jakarta e9 with microprofile 3. This was an integration test executed here and I and tested this status. So if I would like to have you know the status 500 it will break test, compile would be the right thing so so now it's no more successful because I expected 500 500 but was 200. Of course we are jakarta developers, so we are always okay. So just do this. Okay, so uh the micro profile rest client, very useful for system, black box testing and also almost more useful.

So we have just 15 minutes left. So um what I usually do, I would use the same interface. You know to create another micro service copy the interface over and call it. We can do it in in a. uh I would call it uh jakarta. Tech talk uh in, uh for instance, um how to combine uh system tests with uh microservice to microservice communications, for instance, okay. So this was um microprofile s client, and this is the reason why I need it here.

uh In this particular case, I used uh cxf from apache, uh to uh I say I say: uh jax arrest, no drugs arrest, micro profile, risk, client implementation and uh the interesting part this is this is this is java. Se project has nothing to do with uh with jakarta or containers, and it's and it's still working okay. Now, uh let's do something crazier, I don't do it very often. I think the first time on stage.

So if it breaks, forgive me right, so let's call it um custom authentication and this is bigger deal and uh I hope, uh what a sec. I think http.

This is what I wanted to do so and uh implement abstract methods validate request and um what what happens here? We get request, response and http message context and very briefly, http message context.

uh What I can do is, I can actually do something like this, and I say I would like to be tanya today and uh var, let's say, rose uh nothing collection, okay, this was this was this is boring empty set, so we just go with that and uh no roles so roles.

Should actually authentication credentials should work.

ah um Okay, so what let's see whether null is also okay, if not, I will have to pass the empty set, but what I can do right now is: I can actually inject the principle here and say: hacker.

As you can see tanya, so what I did was a signal liner I created. Actually it is one of the most asked questions know how to create your own authentication mechanism, and we had to do this once for our open id connect reasons, for instance. Well, this is jsr 375 and I think in the audience, there's ariane times also a guest of the axfm podcast. Who actually was one of the creators of the specification- and this is a great way to introduce you know, for instance, custom roles, the problem we have with json web token.

We get the json web token, microprofile json world token is great, but uh what is lacking the mechanism? How to get a json web token? With that you can build this and what you can even do is you can say: okay in case I'm and by the way uh just do the last thing. I could actually create my own jakarta, jakarta principle, jakarta principle, which extends caller principle.

I think caller principle yeah from the enterprise and I need the constructor at constructor and to show you, let's do to string and say this, get name and custom.

What's the problem plus plus custom.

Yes, so um now, let's see what happens instead of that, we can actually do the.

You see you see the problem, I have to use the class, even even with jakarta e. um You will have to use your own classes, so maybe this will. This is going to be fixed in jakarta, e11 for sure, but uh now I have still used my own jakarta principle here and this principle can has addition can have additional methods which I can use. I can cast the principle to my principle and do you know special stuff with it is?

Actually I got the question all over again how to do that, and it's very simple, um of course, what you can also inject your identity store, I think, is called where you can maintain the users right. So, okay, we have that, uh let's see and uh one more time, where's the. What deploy that and.

As you can see jakarta principal tanya custom, so what it means is uh this was actually was the one liner. I was able to inject the uh principle, which is a actually the. uh I was called custom, authentic, uh no uh jakarta principle and I could add additional methods. You know I could, I could say: okay um is valid and the principle is only valid is something happens and.

Use actually we need this in the past a lot you know uh and we use jack back then to have you know, principles with custom with additional custom methods.

Okay, so now um we are now in the uh let's say um how to call it in uh the mode how to how to uh put you know the jakarta goodness to microprofile projects. Now um what you can also do is the following, so I'm I can actually add the uh bulkhead here and say: I'm would like to have two and waiting task. Q is two or let's say three so with that, and now it's interesting because bulkhead means what this actually means is. These pink methods can be only executed by two threads in parallel.

If there are more than two, um the uh the uh the request is going to be enqueued in in a in a data structure, and in case you know uh it's going to be overloaded, I could use fallback and call another method.

So what's interesting here is the following. So if I just execute the uh this once again and uh check out the metrics, so uh are they still not available? So I have somehow my what needs some treatment. It's too lazy.

um Do it again. Now it's looking better. So um what this means is the. um What I like the most was default. Tolerance is that the that the um the state of the bulkhead is going to be exposed as a metric?

I don't have to do anything about that, and the interesting part is um this is actually the question from yesterday's a hex tv with that I actually know how the server is doing, because I can check you know what is the depth of the queue whether the server is overloaded or not, and then call you know the server or not so um question to tanya to the studio. Do we have any questions actually.

Okay, I just took a look. This was just like you know, uh just uh just uh inventory comments, but not not a real comment. I would say so so what it means is um I can.

um I can use no default tolerance, annotations and uh I get in addition to this without any, you know, without any additional matrix here, everything is exposed as a as a prometheus matrix so and the super feature. So let's watch this.

So if we come back here and um watch the word, so I I hacked 45 minutes and at the end of the day there are 7k so and the uh what I always wanted myself is with these thin wars is what you should we should actually have is something like you know, a serverless environment, where I can pick my war and push it somewhere and don't care about the service at all. So this was we. I always waited for the moment, because you know um what I never got there was back.

Then you know the sun grit, an old cloud where you have to zip everything and push it to the cloud it started. You know the amazon lambdas were that hard, that there was a specific company. I think the company name was serverless, which helped developers to package the lambdas and we always had the wars and the interesting part with that is um that if you take a look, for instance on that, my understanding is pyracloud is going to be something like this.

Where you can then pick, you know your thin war and push it to uh somewhere. This is probably you're going to be paired or not. No one knows, but it's going to be executed uh somewhere and for me it's not a cloud, it would be a serverless, you know. So what can happen is that the application servers will just disappear. I will only have you know my business logic.

7K push it the cloud as it should be, because actually, if you think about this, who would like to you know to to to fiddle with yamls to deploy, we did it. You know 20 years ago with xtoclet and xml, and this is actually if this works and there will be more providers doing that.

Then we have the best of both worlds. With uh quarkus and helidone. We get the opportunity to to to push the applications with containers, to communities and with thin wars. We can. We can package our application and push it to. You know to a managed cloud.

Yeah there is one question: um it was uh from buhari, so you can, you can see it. Maybe all right.

Persistence provide yeah, you can uh you can bujake, you can uh usually, if you, if you search for zoteria, there are lots of examples, and- and my is the simplest possible example- usually you can inject here, identity stores, so um yeah injection just works and um yeah.

I would like to deploy my war by sftp to a predefined path. Mikhail didn't do it. I mean not. This isn't not a problem and uh michael r. Yes, oh um old, great idea with war uh yeah, but I'm a little bit more restrictive. So my wars don't have any jars inside it's just you know the application code and with that- and if I think about this, we had actually had also discussion with bruno borges on the podcast is for me it's actually it would be serverless right.

We just need a kind of a rest api to push it somewhere. This would be actually great.
