25 Nov 2020

Today’s meeting marks the 1st anniversary of the UX SIG. The inaugural meeting took place on the 26th of November 2019.
We discussed iconography, including which icons to start with and whether we should use Material icons from Google or something else like Font Awesome Icons. The discussion then verred into interesting territory when James Nord raised the point that the Table to Divs transition might warrant moving from Jenkins 2.x to 3.0. Finally there was some discussion about open bugs and what impact Tim Jacomb's performance optimization for the Plugin Manager might have on the ATH test cases.

An update was provided about the Tables to Divs transition. Most of the major plugins (1000+ installations) were now issue free. But work is still ongoing to make sure all sizable plugins work with new code base. An update provide on the JQuery Update to the latest version. Tim Jacomb provided an overview of the work that he had done on optimizing the performance of the load time of the Plugin Manager.

This edition of the UX SIG meeting featured more discussion about when to merge the Tables to Divs transition for forms. The consensus was that this should land just after the LTS baseline had been selected. Felix provided an update on the focus on updating JQuery since the current library is very out of date and could pose vulnerabilities, though none have been proven.

In order to improve the look and feel of reporter plugins (like JUnit, Code Coverage, Static Analysis, etc.) it makes sense to use some modern JavaScript libraries and components. This presentation by Ullrich Hafner introduces a few new UI components that can be used by plugin authors to provide a rich user interface for reports in Jenkins.

The following new components are shown in the session:
* bootstrap4-api-plugin: Bootstrap is the world’s most popular front-end component library to build responsive, mobile-first projects on the web.
* data-tables-api-plugin: DataTables is a highly flexible tool, built upon the foundations of progressive enhancement, that adds a lot of features to any HTML table.
* echarts-api-plugin: ECharts is an open-sourced JavaScript visualization tool to create intuitive, interactive, and highly-customizable charts.
* font-awesome-api-plugin: Font Awesome has vector icons and social logos, it is the web’s most popular icon set and toolkit with currently more than 1,500 free icons.

Oleg Nenashev joined the group and the main discussion was about the upcoming Jenkins UX Hackfest which is planned for the week of May 25 to 29. See link for more details: https://www.jenkins.io/events/online-hackfest/2020-uiux/. Joe Brueggen showed the progress on the updated designs for tables. There was also a discussion about how to best land the PR for migrating from tables to divs for UI forms and other elements. This is a significant change to the Jenkins UI and needs careful testing to make sure it doesn't break any plugins.
