It is inefficient to route one-to-one calls WebRTC calls through a media server. Jitsi’s video conferencing architecture utilizes a feature known as Peer-to-Peer for One-to-One (P2P4121) where calls are sent peer-to-peer instead of through the bridge until the third caller joins. This saves on server utilization when it is not needed. George Politis of the Jitsi team gives a review of this capability and the engineering that went into making it.

The Jitsi video conferencing architecture employs a number of techniques to keep bandwidth and server usage to a minimum while maintaining excellent video quality. George Politis of the Jitsi team gave a talk at this year's IIT-RTC Conference about how they minimize costs without sacrificing call quality with demonstrations from meet.jit.si, the free service they host. Learn about SFU's, simulcast, adaptivity selecting between peer-to-peer and a media server (P2P4121), and how Jitsi intelligently suspends streams.
