From YouTube: Pendleton ArtsBlock Grand Opening
Description
Pendleton ArtsBlock apartments Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.
A
Welcome
welcome.
Welcome
welcome
to
this
this
wonderful
grand
opening-
and
you
know
five
years
ago,
I
believe
ed,
Laos
and
John
Munro
got
the
brilliant
idea
to
apply
for
CNI
grant
for
Shoto
courts
and
they
they
made
the
mistake
of
hiring
Brynn
Shore
development
to
be
their
partner
and
at
that
time
I
just
wanted.
Just
first
of
all,
you
understand
that
we
were.
We
were
so
excited
about
winning
that
competition
for
the
30
million
dollars
and
we're
33
other
cities
that
applied
and
Kansas
City
was
successful
in
its
first
effort,
but.
A
But
look
what's
happened
since
then.
You
think
about
what
this
community
looked
like.
Five
years
ago,
we
had
two
motels
that
were
not
constructive.
Let's
put
it
that
way
in
the
community.
They
are
no
longer
there
and
we
had
a
highway
system
that
was
confused
and
the
city
has
now
spent
most
of
the
last
three
and
a
half
or
four
years
to
secure
the
funds.
A
A
There's
anybody
from
k
CMU
here
but
they've,
probably
invested
seventy
or
eighty
million
dollars
into
the
campus
and
and
been
spectacularly
exciting
Independence
Park
over
here,
the
Park
District's
going
to
spend
a
million
dollars
in
the
spring
fixing
the
park
and
improving
lighting
and
security
and
making
it
more
friendly.
We
build
Pendleton
flats,
this
projects
been
done
and
our
other
Quinlan
projects
have
been
done
and
there
have
been
a
whole
variety
of
other
things
that
have
gone
on
socially
in
the
fabric
of
the
community.
A
A
A
C
You
David
and
thank
you
to
bridge
for
for
being
our
master
development
and
for
saying
just
just
throw
out
the
entire
script
that
John
wrote
for
me
about
all
the
people
we
want
to
thank,
but
we
do
want
to
put
the
choice.
Neighborhood
project
started
out
is
how
do
we
replace
a
dilapidated,
absolutely
development
of
Shoto
courts,
which
is
just
down
the
road
on
Independence,
Avenue
and
34
units
and
the
way
I
describe
how
obsolete
that
development
was?
C
B
C
You
cannot
expect
families
to
be
productive
to
move
from
where
they
are
in
extreme
low-income
areas
and
be
successful
and
the
choice
neighborhood
initiative
grant
came
along
at
first.
We
had
a
planning
grant
and
we
used
that
to.
How
do
we
address
this
and
then
the
actual
implementation
grant
an
opportunity
to
bring
the
community
together.
The
federal
government,
the
state
government,
the
local
government,
our
community
partners,
the
Housing
Authority
and
most
important
the
residents
all
together
and.
C
B
C
To
help
build
our
community
build
on
what's
there
and
make
it
even
better
and
that's
what
this
is.
This
is
the
third
phase
of
six
different
phases
of
that
project
and
when
you
go
through
this
you'll
see
what
we're
about,
and
it's
not
concentrating
low-income
families,
a
large
part
of
it
is
it's
putting
families
and
recognizing
that
you
can
live
next
to
anybody
you'd
want
and
in
this
development
it's
low
income,
families,
extremely
low
income,
families,
moderate.
F
C
Struggling
people
that
are
on
their
way
they're
all
living
together
and
they're,
looking
at
each
other
saying
you're
my
neighbor,
and
that
is
the
key
aspect
of
this
and
we're
thanking
you
for
being
here.
Thank
you
for
being
part
of
this
whole
operation
and
we
look
forward
to
working
with
you
for
their
next
phases
and
making
sure
that
we're
serving
all
the.
A
G
G
However,
there's
so
many
things
that
are
going
on
and
we're
so
proud
to
be
a
part
of
what's
going
on
here,
I
serves
on
the
public
improvement
Advisory
Committee
for
four
years,
and
so
this
project
is
something
that
I'm
familiar
with
and
really
thank
the
developer,
because
they
had
some
very
hard
challenging
conversations
here
in
Kansas
City,
but
they
really
stuck
to
it
and
made
sure
that
this
happened
in
partnership
with
so
many
people.
So
please,
let's
give
the
developers
around
of
applause
for
all
of
their
hard
work.
G
Able
to
accomplish
in
these
120
days,
I
have
really
come
to
know
of
the
the
inter
workings
of
the
third
District
and
how
strong
the
people
are
and
how
powerful
the
neighborhood
leaders
are,
and
this
is
just
a
testament
to
a
growing
economy
in
the
third
District,
because
we
know
that
economic
stability
is
a
critical
factor
if
we're
going
to
move
the
heart
of
the
city
forward.
If
we're
going
to
move
the
city
forward.
G
What
do
you
call?
He
had
a
have
satellite
dish
and
so
not
ever
seeing
that,
but
knowing
the
power
of
being
able
to
be
in
a
mixed
income,
neighborhoods
is
so
very
important
and
I'm,
so
very
glad
that
this
is
happening
in
the
third
District.
I
know
that
there's
many
more
people
to
come
and
speak
so
I'll
be
quiet.
But
I
do
want
to
thank
our
former
city
manager.
E
Sight
to
say
the
least,
hon
is
excited
to
be
part
of
this
housing
development
and
especially
creating
that
mixed-use
artist
communities
such
as
Pendleton
artists
blog.
We
all
know
that
stable
housing
is
an
important
step
as
we
build
a
healthy
neighborhood
and
we
believe
the
Pendleton
combines
normally
high
quality,
affordable
housing,
but
also
work
space
for
artists
to
be
an
integral
part
of
economic
development.
E
There
are
many
people
here
to
thank
for
this
transformation.
It's
truly
been
a
citywide
effort
and
we
are
proud
to
be
a
partner
as
we
make
additional,
affordable
housing
to
make
it
a
good
place
to
live
it's
safe
and
a
place
where
residents
can
grow
and
expand
their
opportunities
when
this
was
started.
Pendleton
arts
block
was
a
blank
canvas
and
that
canvas
is
now
complete
and
we
look
forward
to
additional
phases
in
the
choice
neighborhood
when
we
celebrate
that
era
as
we
build
this
inclusive
cultural
art
community.
Thank
you
sometimes.
A
We
get
cynical
about
government
and
government's
role
in
things,
and
everybody
has
their
own
opinion,
but
in
this
case,
HUD
CNI
program
is
really
spectacular
and
this
kind
of
development
would
not
have.
It
was
kind
of
integrated
development
to
try
to
deal
with
all
the
issues
that
are
affecting
the
lower-income
folks
and
to
redevelop
the
neighborhood
wouldn't
happen
so
one
my
hat's
off
to
HUD
for
hood
for
executing
this
program.
Thank
you
very
much
and
in.
A
You
need
money
and
I,
don't
want
to
I
want
to
make
sure
you
understand
that
our
investors
and
lenders
are
really
integral
part
of
this
project
and
US
bank
is,
is
the
lender
and
the
equity
investor
of
this
project
and
Theresa
Lux
is
the
asset
manager.
Here's
out
here
bleeding
over
it
on
a
regular
basis
to
make
sure
we're
doing
the
right
stuff.
So
I'm
going
to
a
salute
the
crackhead
to
come
up
from
u.s.
bank
for
a
minute
good.
D
Afternoon
I'm
so
happy
it's
not
raining
like
it
was.
We
did
the
ground
breaking.
So
this
is
a
beautiful
beautiful
day.
So
part
of
the
financing
for
this
project
is
through
federal,
federal
and
state,
low
income,
housing
tax
credits
and
the
way
the
program
works.
We
invest
in
those
tax
credits
in
exchange
for
them
we
put
equity
into
the
development
now
just
to
drive
that
home.
The
equity
is
just
like
your
down
payment
on
your
house:
it's
not
the
loan,
it's
the
equity,
so.
D
H
Thanks
David,
he
gave
me
two
minutes
to
speak,
so
my
30
minute
speech
here,
I
guess
I'm
gonna
end
too
can
minute
30,
okay,
so
moving
on
quickly,
Housing
Authority,
great
work,
city
of
Kansas,
City,
Missouri,
awesome,
Department
of
Housing
and
Urban
Development.
You
know
these
projects
wouldn't
happen
with
all
those
players
without
us
Bank
and
making
the
tax
credit
investment.
That
is
very
significant
for
us
not
only
in
this
project,
but
we
have
partnered
with
u.s.
bank
in
many
different
projects
across
our
history.
H
We
have
a
great
partnership,
especially
in
the
new
markets
tax
credit
world.
If
you're
familiar
with
those
and
if
you're
not
you
know,
we
give
you
a
lesson
in
30
seconds,
or
so
it's
not
hard
to
understand
so,
which
isn't
probably
not
true
but
anyway
great
additionally,
the
artist
community
very
well
supportive,
the
neighborhood
itself.
Pendleton
Heights,
would
a
great
support
and
an
advocate
on
behalf
of
the
project.
We
also
want.
H
To
the
northeast
Kansas
City,
the
the
portion
of
the
neighborhood
that
helps
support
and
be
with
this
project
from
the
get-go,
as
well
as
the
North
East
Kansas
City
Chamber
of
Commerce,
and
the
Independence
Avenue
CID,
who
are
always
talking
about
crime,
crime
and
chime,
is
Bobby
Baker
here
anyway.
That
delivery
of
that
message
comes
full
force
in
in
a
development
like
this
and,
lastly,
I
want
to
say
thanks
to
our
team
at
Central
Bank
of
Kansas
City,
who
tirelessly
work
for
the
improvement
and
betterment
of
our
community,
especially
in
this
project.
Thank
so.
A
F
And
I'm
Amy
Pigman
I'm
there,
a
couple
of
other
shortlist
readers
here
and
if
you
want
to
wave
Pat
Pat
is
here,
Pat
will
be
our
program
manager
for
this
program,
so
you'll
see
him
in
and
out
of
the
building
and
and
he
helped
facilitate
the
process
that
selected
and
the
three
arts
organizations
that'll
be
taking
up
residence
here
at
the
pendleton
arts
block,
and
I
know
that
we
have
representatives
from
all
of
those
folks
here.
I
think
they're
kind
of
hiding
back
there
by.
F
And
the
kansas
city
and
contemporary
photography
collective,
and
we
also
have
kim
kansas
public
art,
Kansas
City,
Public
Theatre,
and
we
are
so
excited
about
this
group.
There
they
were
selected
by
neighbors.
They
are
selected
by
a
vigil,
is
from
the
Northeast
and
see
Rebecca's
here
and
also
pug
Gutierrez
and-
and
we
had
a
really
amazing
group
of
jurors
that
helped
select
these
artists
and
we're
excited
to
see
what
they're
gonna
do
here
in
this
space
and
and
I.
F
F
I
F
A
Encourage
you
to
come
see
what
they're
gonna
do
they're
gonna
activate
their
there.
There's
the
street
on
independence
and
there'll
be
a
lot
of
activity
there
and
then
arts
asylum
will
be
programming.
The
commercial
space
where
you'll
have
snacks
and
whatnot
so
there'll
be
quite
a
bit
of
act.
Arts
activity
going
on
here.
Somebody.
I
A
Me,
a
question
of
you
know
what
makes
an
artist
housing
project
work.
Why
do
you
do
them
and
how
do
you
do
them?
And
and
the
answer
to
that
question,
is
you
work
with
the
neighborhood
and
you
work
with
the
artist
and
you
see
what
they
want
and
it
takes
a
lot
of
time
and
a
lot
of
work
and
I
know
that
you
know
John
Monroe
and
Todd.
Lieberman
ins
folks
worked
with
the
community
a
great.
A
Pendleton
Hinds
Neighborhood
Association
and
artists
in
the
in
the
neighborhood
and
they're
as
much
a
part
of
this
creation
as
we
are
and
I
hope,
they're
proud
of
what
we've
done
and
hopefully
they
will
enjoy,
and
there
are
people
in
the
community
will
enjoy
what
has
been
created
here.
So
Whitney
Bernardo
as
the
head
of
that
association.
Would
you.
K
E
K
K
H
K
Pendleton
Heights
has
always
had
a
stronghold.
We
have
artists
that
live
here
that
have
pieces
and
the
nails,
kids
that
are
internationally
known
for
their
quilts
and
more
so,
we
feel
like
this
is
just
an
extension
of
realizing
what
the
greater
historic
northeast
wants
and
those
who
attract
and
welcome
artists
into
our
neighborhood
and
say
you
have
a
home
here
forever.
K
We
here
the
artists,
we
see
you
with
hear
of
your
struggles
of
affordable
housing
and
quality
workspaces,
and
we
are
desperately
working
as
a
collective
neighborhoods
to
make
this
the
destination
for
artists.
We
hope
that
artists
block
sets
that
precedent
for
higher
quality
of
living
for
all,
as
everyone
has
mentioned,
and
that
this
will
be
the
new
development
standard
in
the
urban
core,
and
we
look
forward
to
more
here.
K
We
are
also
extremely
grateful
for
all
the
partnerships
and
we're
glad
we
also
got
to
highlight
the
ones
we've
always
had,
and
especially
with
the
people,
the
artists,
the
geography,
the
relationship
to
the
city
I
feel
like
it
really
brought
it
to
the
forefront
of
everyone
Minds
of
what
we
live
in
experience
every
day
and
really
capitalize
on
that.
We're
looking
forward
to
continuing
that
with
the
micro
retail
space
events
in
the
park
and,
most
importantly,
all
the
residents.
K
B
K
Criticized
it
and
they
did
that
with
grace
and
humor
and
integrated
a
lot
of
those
changes,
and
so
we're
incredibly
thankful
for
that,
and
so
last
but
not
least,
I
can't
list.
All
the
people
were
grateful
for
we
see
a
lot
of
you
here
and
I
would
invite
you
all
out
our
arts
or
arts
block
our
homes,
tour
and
artist
market.
Is
this
Saturday
from
12:00
to
5:00?
K
A
A
I
Right
long,
Shamar
drums
emerging
artists
and
I
relocated
from
Saint
Joseph
Missouri
to
come
here
to
Kansas
City
I
believe
that
you
were
never,
you
never
become
an
artist.
You
were
born
artist
and
a
lot
of
times
emerging
artists
struggle
with
turning
their
craft
cents.
A
profit
I
personally
have
backed
out
of
being
an
artist
because
of
financial
uncertainty.
Affordable,
affordable
housing
for
artists
means
a
chance
to
live
with
more
stability.
I
Affordable
housing
for
artists
means
networking,
with
other
creatives
being
in
a
community
of
artists
is
very
crucial
for
artists
of
productivity
and
growth.
Austin
artists
isolate
themselves
because
they
are
misunderstood.
Creatives
understand
other
creatives
by
being
in
a
committee
of
artists.
It
gives
artists
support
a
support
system.
However,
I
believe
that
community
support
is
actually
more
important.
The
artist
needs
the
community
as
much
as
the
community
needs
the
artists.
The
artists
expresses
emotions
of
the
community.
I
We
often
reflect
the
soul
and
hearts
where
we
live,
that
reflection
can
be
ugly
or
beautiful,
but
that
reflection
is
needed
to
understand
each
other
in
such
a
divided
America.
So,
thank
you,
Phyllis
and
Artbox
for
the
opportunity
and
I
hope
more
artists.
Take
advantage
of
this
opportunity.
Thank
you.
Can.
A
A
Again,
I
will
tell
you
that
the
people
in
that
work
for
the
city
of
Kansas,
City
Jeff,
is
spectacular,
he's
bright,
hard-working
brilliant,
more
than
bright
and
really
insightful
and
dedicated
to
the
work
in
the
city.
So
we
wouldn't
be
able
to
do
this
without
all
the
insight
and
direction
he
gave
us
and
time
I.
Don't
really
know
how
you
got
as
much
time
as
you
did
to
help
us
with
this,
but
he
did
so.
I'd
really
appreciate
that
the.
A
E
B
We
exist
to
serve
the
community
and
provide
a
space
for
the
neighborhood
to
meet
and
enjoy
an
amazing
cup
of
coffee
and
food.
We
would
love
to
think
to
build
the
construction
company
for
all
the
work
they
have
done
and
their
ability
to
train
youth
and
apprentices
at
the
same
time,
which
is
a
very
unique
ability
to.
B
Whitney
and
the
Hilton
Heights
neighborhood
association
for
all
their
help
and
support
during
this
build-out
process.
It's
been
a
long
time,
I
think
something
like
that
and
we'd
love
to
thank
rich
or
for
turning
into
dilapidated
gas
station
into
a
beautiful
apartment
complex
and
for
building
us
an
outdoor
patio
to
enjoy
the
view.
So
thank
you
guys
and.
A
Have
one
last
thing
that
we
want
to
do,
but
I
will
tell
you
that
what's
what's
invaluable
to
us,
is
that
there's
a
need
for
affordable
housing
all
over
the
country?
There
is
a
special
need
in
Kansas
City
and
we're
hoping
I'll
continue
to
serve,
that
that
need
with
other
developments
and
couldn't
the
Quintin
place.
Projects
are
going
to
come
online
in
a
couple
months
and
we
just
got
an
award
in
the
Northland.
Give
public
housing
residents
an
option
where
they
want
to
live.
A
A
A
Could
trust
it
and
it
really
means
so
much
to
me
that
that
was
the
case,
and
we
did
so
many
things
here
that
you
you
could
never
do
in
any
other
city.
We
just
gotten
done
and
you
trusted
us
and
we
trusted
you
and
I'm,
really
sorry
that
we
won't
be
able
to
work
together
on
this
project
anymore.
I'm
excited
about
your
future
endeavors
and
I'm
sure
that
you
will
continue
to
do
great
work
in
other
areas.
So
thank
you
so
much.
A
J
About
10
years
ago
and
and
John
came
to
us
and
said,
hey,
we
we're
gonna,
go
for
a
planning
grant
and
we
scrape
up
$75,000
and
try
to
match
that
with
a
housing
authority
and
see
if
we
can't
do
some
stuff
and
it's
been
fun
to
watch
that
evolution
take
place
in
this
neighborhood,
along
with
all
the
other
stuff.
That
was
organically
happening
in
the
neighborhood
because
of
great
leadership
in
Pendleton
Hinds.
So
I
want
to
recognize
the
tremendous
work
of
the
city
staff
who've
devoted
years.
J
J
J
Hahn
coming
in
and
say
I'll
deal
with
the
east
side
of
the
street
of
the
city,
deals
with
the
west
side
of
street
and
dealing
with
our
problem,
hotels,
and
that
was
the
best
deal
I
ever
made,
because
we
were
able
to
eliminate
some
blighting
influences
that
really
start
to
change
option
of
this
part
of
the
city
and
it
was
fun
to
drive
around
a
little
bit.
More
I
was
torturing
my
wife
this
morning
on
my
first
day
of
retirement
and
I'm,
enjoying
this:
nothing
not
having
to
wear
a
necktie.
J
This
is
first
time
on
a
Tuesday
at
21
years.
I'd
have
to
wear
that,
but
it's
been
fun
to
watch
the
change
and
go
around
and
I
spent
a
great
partnership,
but
every
every
deal
that
we
were
able
to
make
as
a
city
was
backed
up
by
a
great
mayor,
the
great
city
council.
We
stood
behind
those
deals
and
said:
let's
do
this.
J
I
should
say
these
Kansas
City
gets
to
do
all
that
stuff.
So
again,
it's
been
a
great
partnership.
What
Lynn
Shores
been
doing,
and
then
there
were
some
conversations
about
going
after
another
grant
David
if,
if
Kansas
City
won't
for
whatever
reason
last
time,
I
checked,
this
is
still
Jackson.
County
will
try
to
do
something
with
you
down
there.
So
again,
I
want
to
thank
it's
been
a
great
partnership.
All
of
the
stakeholders
in
this
neighborhood
should
be
very
pleased.
This
is
a
great
remember.
J
Gas
station
I
think
we
had
several
homicides
on
this
facility.
What
this
has
done
to
this
corner
and
what
this
has
done
for
the
vibrancy
of
this
neighborhood
is
just
the
first
step
of
many.
So
congratulations
to
all
of
you
who
have
been
working
tirelessly
for
decades
to
see
this
day
come
to
reality.
I
look
forward
to
seeing
what
more
great
things
are
going
to
happen.
J
It's
all
about
partnerships
and
the
partnerships
start
at
that
individual
household
level,
and
then
we
can
just
leverage
the
crap
out
of
the
government
and
figure
out
a
way
to
bring
make
good
things
happen
in
this
city.
So
thank
you
to
all
of
you.
This
is
a
great
day
in
Kansas
City
and
there
hopefully
a
lot
more
great
days
to
come.
Something
we're.
