From YouTube: Open Data KC: Using Health Data
Description
Learn about the data your city creates, the open data movement and how data is used. This video series was created by MBA students at Rockhurst University and produced by the City of Kansas City, MO.
A
Hi,
my
name
is
Jeff
Dunn
I'm,
an
MBA
student
at
rockhurst
university
I
will
be
reviewing
health
as
it
pertains
to
open
data
Casey
over
the
next
five
minutes.
We
will
learn
how
to
navigate
the
site,
speak
about
some
specific
health
topics
and
discuss
what
is
coming
soon.
This
is
the
homepage
for
open
data
Casey
to
get
to
health.
You
will
need
to
expand
the
category
section
on
the
left
side
of
the
screen
at
the
bottom
left
of
the
screen.
You
will
see
a
health
as
indicated
by
a
red
arrow
once
you
click
there.
A
That
will
take
you
to
the
health
data
sets
under
the
category
of
health.
You
will
see
data
sets,
maps,
charts
and
other
files.
Some
of
the
categories
available
include
cause
of
death.
Both
disease
related
and
non-diseased
related
cooling,
centers
in
Kansas,
City
Missouri
for
the
hot
summer
months.
Data
sets
that
give
information
about
the
lead,
safe
home
program,
as
well
as
as
bestest
removal.
Lead-Safe
kc
data
set
is
a
registry
of
homes
that
have
received
lead
removal
services
through
the
lead,
safe
program.
Lead
can
be
present
and
paint
on
the
inside
and
outside
of
homes.
A
Usually
built
before
1978
lead
in
homes
is
so
important
because
it
is
especially
toxic
to
children.
Lead
is
highly
toxic
metal
that
may
cause
a
range
of
health
problems,
especially
in
young
children.
When
lettuce
is
absorbed
into
the
body,
it
can
cause
damage
to
the
brain
and
kidneys
at
high
levels.
Lead
can
cause
behavioral
problems,
seizures
and
even
death.
A
This
program
is
designed
to
target
older
homes,
usually
before
1978,
inspect
them
and
eradicate
the
lead
that
poses
the
risk.
This
is
the
incorporation
of
the
most
recent
Kansas
City
led
safe
data
as
found
on
the
website.
I
have
created
a
heat
map
that
shows
where
the
focus
LED
remediation
exists,
as
you
can
see
that
heavy
concentration
is
indicated
by
red.
What
does
this
mean
for
citizens?
This
data
informs
the
public
where
the
problems
exist.
This
will
heighten
awareness
and
hopefully
make
the
citizens
of
Kansas
City
Missouri
safer.
A
Asbestos
is
the
name
given
to
a
group
of
minerals
that
are
resistant
to
heat
and
corrosion.
It
has
been
used
in
products
such
as
insulation
for
pipes,
floor
tiles
and
building
material,
as
bestest
is
well
recognized
as
a
health
hazard
breathing.
This
material
and
the
fibers
can
cause
a
buildup
of
scar
tissue
in
the
lungs
called
asbestosis.
A
This
can
progress
and
result
in
loss
of
lung
function
and
potentially
death.
Asbestos
also
causes
cancer
of
the
lung
and
diseases
such
as
mesothelioma.
There
is
no
safe
level
of
asbestos
exposure
for
any
type
of
asbestos
fiber.
This
is
a
point
map
where,
as
bestest
has
been
removed
from
contaminated
buildings,
the
size
of
the
dots
represent
the
square
footage
of
the
area
that
was
remodeled
or
demolished.
As
you
can
see,
I
did
this
myself,
and
this
is
easy
to
perform
once
you
obtain
the
data
sets.
A
This
is
another
example
of
open
data
leading
to
more
transparency
for
Kansas
City,
Missouri
citizens.
With
this
abundance
of
information,
we
can
draw
a
linkage
to
health
related
diseases.
This
could
also
serve
to
real
estate
investors,
access
that
may
have
been
more
cumbersome
in
the
past
about
prospective
buildings.
Lastly,
a
very
exciting
part
of
open
data.
Kc
is
the
community
health
assessment.
This
is
currently
available
in
PDF
format.
On
the
website.
The
report
is
an
all-encompassing
statistical
report
that
gives
citizens
an
idea
of
where
we
stand.
A
What
is
the
most
prevalent
cancer
in
Kansas,
City,
Missouri
environmental
hazards,
such
as
pollution,
and
how
we
compared
to
other
cities
leading
causes
of
death,
statistics
of
substance,
abuse,
suicides,
homicides,
infectious
disease
such
as
influenza
and
other
communicable
diseases?
This
can
be
used
by
providers
and
city
officials
to
improve
health
by
making
changes
to
the
current
system
where
the
needs
are
the
greatest.
This
last
slide
gives
an
example
of
one
of
the
many
interesting
statistics
seen
in
Kansas
City
Missouri
health
assessment
guide.
