Description
The Weekly Report provides news and insight about Kansas City, Mo. programs and services provided by City departments.
This week's host, Mike Severo from the City Communications Department talks about the City's new LGBTQ Commission, updates to CompassKC and holiday recycling.
A
Happy
new
year,
kansas
city,
I'm
mike
savero
with
the
city
communications
office-
and
this
is
the
weekly
report
here-
are
the
top
three
things
you
should
know
this
week.
The
city
along
with
60
local
lgbtq
organizations
have
partnered
together
to
create
the
first
lgbtq
commission
in
the
state.
The
commission
will
help
shape
city
policies
and
engagement
with
kansas
city's
lgbtq
communities.
A
B
Are
communities
that
we
still
don't
give
a
strong
enough
voice?
There
are
organizations
that
need
to
be
at
the
table
and
there
are
the
efforts
that
we
need
to
take
on
to
say
that
every
kansas
city
and
truly
everyone
from
around
this
region
can
know
that
we
are
a
place.
That's
accepting
we're
a
place
that
is
welcoming
and
we're
a
place
that
will
go
through
the
uncomfortable
conversations
to
make
long-term
systemic
changes
in
how
we
live
and
how
we
interact
and
how
we
grow
and
how
we
acknowledge
everyone's
love.
B
Everyone's
identity,
everyone's
essential
place
in
kansas
city
I'd,
be
remiss
if
I
didn't
thank
my
colleagues
first,
my
elected
colleagues
who
were
bold,
who
wanted
to
try
something
to
change
something
at
a
time
when
many
people
were
saying,
there's
so
much
other
stuff
going
on
and
I'll
actually
say
this
from
my
own
background,
there's
always
other
stuff
going
on.
But
what
that
doesn't
mean
is
that
it
is
not
vital
and
essential
for
you
to
make
a
difference
in
some
of
the
key
areas
where
we
can
take
positive
and
transformative
steps.
A
C
To
introduce
you
to
what's
new
in
the
fall
2020
compass
kc
upgrade

you'll
find
a
new
tab
called
my

My
work
makes
it
easy
for
you
to
navigate
through
items
that
might
need
your
attention
from
the
my
work
tab
navigate
to
my
plans,
click
on
the
plan
you'd
like
to
review,
then
click
on
the
reviews,
tab,
the
red
dot,
denotes
items
that
need
attention
on
the
case
under
each
review.
Use
the
down
arrow
on
the
right
to
expand
a
comment.
Items
listed
in
the
comments
will
need
to
be
addressed
in
the
resubmittal
documents.

Hi,
kansas
city,
I'm
shannon
with
the
solid
way
services
division.
We
all
know
the
holidays
can
be
stressful,
but
the
city,
your
solid
way,
services
team
and
our
partners
at
missouri,
organics
and
bridging
the
gap
are
here
to
help.
Did
you
or
your
family
put
up
a
real
tree
for
christmas?
If
so,
our
partners
at
missouri
organics
are
waiting
for
them
at
one
of
our
three
drop-off
centers
real
trees
may
be
dropped
off
for
free
on

Until

Do
you
have
some

these
lying
around?
If
so,
our

If
your
car
breaks
down
or
you
get
stuck,
the
kit
should
include
a
flashlight
with
extra
batteries,
a
first
aid
kit,
necessary
medications,
blankets
and
or
a
sleeping
bag,
extra
mittens
or
gloves
socks.
A
warm
cap
and
rain
gear,
a
small
sack
of
sand
to
use
for
traction
under
your
wheels,
a
small
shovel
booster
cables,
small
tools
such
as
pliers
wrenches
screwdriver,
a
brightly
colored
cloth
to
use
as
a
flag,
non-perishable
foods,
bottled
water
cell
phone
chargers.

F
F
F
F
We
remember
the
four
city
employees
who
have
died,
including
three
from
the
fire
department
as
first
responders
battle
covid
within
their
ranks,
while
still
answering
calls
for
help.
Staff
from
the
health
department
delivered
frontline
services
while
taking
a
lot
of
heat
and
working
long
hours
for
months
on
end.
Thank
you
and
here's.
A
standing
ovation.
F
We
repaired
roads
across
the
city,
this
northland
project
put
in
new
sidewalks
pavement
and
water
mains.
We
patched
35
000,
potholes
repaved
83,
lane
miles
built
the
first
two-way
protected
bike
lane
eliminated
bus
fares
and
won
a
huge
federal
grant,
174
million
dollars
to
extend
the
kc
streetcar
south
on
maine
to
umkc
all
aboard
in
2025.
F
When
it
comes
to
trash,
you
complained
and
we
fixed
it.
We
dropped
contractors
and
city
crews
now
pick
up.
All
trash
satisfaction
jumped
nine
percent,
city-wide
and
20
percent
in
the
northland,
and
we've
saved
a
quarter
million
dollars
so
far
in
2021,
you'll
see
better
at
night,
we've
converted
1500
street
lights
to
led
to
save
72
000
a
year
in
electric
bills
and
repairs,
and
we
have
a
new
city
manager,
brian
platt,
who
is
working
on
an
innovative
budget
to
recommend
to
the
mayor
and
city
council.
F
G
H
H
We
have
held
a
winter
break
camp
for
students
and
families
for
families
that
are
in
need
of
services.
If
parents
are
working
while
the
kids
are
out
of
school
for
their
virtual
school.
Obviously
it
means
that
the
kids
have
a
safe
place
for
their
children
to
go
while
they're
working
or
if
they
have
other
things
that
they
need
to
do.
H
I
think
when
we
have
these
breaks,
sometimes
we
think
families
everyone
has
the
same
time
off
and
and
they
don't,
there
are
still
families
that
work
every
day
that
do
need
a
place
for
their
kids
to
go.
The
kids
are
doing
various
holiday
themed
activities,
getting
the
opportunity
to
just
have
some
physical
activity
in
the
gym
and
just
have
a
good
time
while
they
are
out
of
school
for
virtual
school.
