From YouTube: The Weekly Report - May 19, 2022
Description
The Weekly Report provides news and insight about Kansas City, MO programs and services provided by City departments.
Work began on improving City streets after City Council approved nearly $40 million in resurfacing contracts. To celebrate infrastructure week the KC Water department has taken steps to improve sewer infrastructure by upgrading the technology at the Westside Pump Station. And the Kansas City Fire Department offers tips on how to stay safe this summer during family gatherings around the fire pit.
A
Hi
everyone
and
welcome
to
the
weekly
report,
I'm
maggie
green
with
city
communications,
and
here
are
the
top
three
things
you
need
to
know.
This
week,
first
city
council
approved
nearly
40
million
dollars
in
street
resurfacing
contracts.
Further
demonstrating
our
commitment
to
create
smoother
streets
in
kansas
city.
The
city
has
shifted
from
pothole
repair
to
fall
street
resurfacing,
which
is
a
more
permanent
and
higher
quality
improvement.
A
The
city
is
finishing:
the
300
lane
miles
of
resurfacing
from
last
year
and
will
begin
the
300
miles
from
this
upcoming
year
in
the
next
few
weeks.
This
means
in
about
18
months.
The
city
will
have
resurfaced,
600
lane
miles
or
10
percent
of
all
city
streets.
National
infrastructure
week
is
may
16
through
may
20th.
Kc
water
has
made
great
improvements
to
one
of
its
treatment
facilities,
find
out
how
these
upgrades
protect
our
environment
and
improve
sewer
infrastructure.
A
Summertime
means
it's
time
to
hang
out
with
your
friends
and
there's
no
better
way
to
hang
out
with
your
friends
than
spend
time
making
s'mores
and
enjoying
your
fire
pit.
But
before
you
get
your
marshmallows
ready
be
sure
you
are
following
these
tips
from
the
kansas
city
fire
department
to
stay
safe
check.
The
wind
conditions,
keep
your
fire
pit
in
the
open
and
away
from
buildings,
be
sure
to
have
a
fire
extinguisher
or
bucket
of
water.
Keep
your
chairs
away
from
the
fire
and
never
leave
your
fire
unattended.
A
B
We
are
excited
to
be
back
here
again,
as
you
know
really,
since
we
began
a
lot
of
us
here,
both
my
position
as
mayor
our
city
manager,
our
public
works
director,
all
of
whom
being
comparatively
new.
We
have
noted
that
the
way
to
improve
our
roads
long
term
is
to
make
sure
that
we
are
rebuilding
and
resurfacing
our
system.
The
pathway
to
better
streets
is
through
better
investment
and
better
work
up
front.
B
That's
why
once
again,
this
year
we
are
tripling
the
amount
of
lane
miles
that
are
typically
resurfaced,
going
from
100
lane
miles
to
300
lane
miles.
That
means
in
every
part
of
kansas
city,
we're
on
the
east
side
today,
but
in
every
part
of
kansas
city,
you'll,
see
new
roads,
resurfaced
you'll
see
us
connecting
more
communities.
We've.
C
Got
six
thousand
lane
miles
of
streets
here
in
kansas
city,
which
is
a
tremendous
number?
It's
very
obvious
that
many
of
those
have
not
been
touched
in
decades,
so
we've
got
a
lot
of
catching
up
to
do
here,
but
what
we're
hopeful
about
is
that
by
the
end
of
this
summer
we
will
have
done
probably
close
to
600
lane
miles
of
streets,
and
this
is
the
new
bar.
This
is
the
new
standard,
our
goal.
D
Is
to
have
this
10
percent
of
our
streets
resurfaced
within
a
year
and
a
half
and
we're
well
on
our
way
with
that.
My.
B
Colleagues
at
the
city,
council
and
all
of
us
who,
I
think
have
taken
some
tough
votes,
saying
that
we're
going
to
spend
tens
of
millions
of
dollars
a
year
to
enhance
our
resurfacing
program,
so
you're,
not
just
seeing
mediocre
pothole
fills
instead,
what
you're
actually
seeing
as
a
brand
new
street
in
situations
where
those
streets
need
to
be
resurfaced.
Importantly,.
E
E
F
F
D
Before
you
start
your
fire
pit
check
the
local
weather
forecast.
Don't
use
your
fire
pit
on
unusually
windy
days.
Never
let
your
fire
pit,
when
it's
underneath
the
overhang
of
a
building
or
beneath
trees
and
keep
the
immediate
area
around
the
fire
pit,
clear
of
yard
waste
and
other
flammable
materials.
D
It
should
also
be
at
least
10
feet
away
from
the
house.
Wayward
sparks
could
blow
out
of
the
fire
and
ignite
nearby
structures.
You
could
end
up
with
the
fire
emergency
gathering
around
a
fire
with
friends
can
create
great
memories,
but
fires
can
also
be
unpredictable.
You
should
always
keep
a
fire
extinguisher
or
bucket
of
water
on
end,
just
in
case
in
an
emergency.
You
can
use
your
water
to
douse
the
fire
and
be
sure
to
teach
kids
to
stop
drop
and
roll
in
the
bit
that
their
clothes
catch
fire.
D
Even
after
a
fire
has
died
down
and
only
glowing
embers
remain,
do
not
leave
it
unattended,
not
even
to
dash
into
the
house
for
a
beverage
or
bathroom
break.
If
you
must
leave
deputize
a
responsible
party
to
stay
with
the
fire
or
extinguish
the
fire
completely
before
leaving
by
following
these
tips,
you
can
create
great
memories
with
friends
and
family
and
not
to
mention
a
delicious
s'more.
Remember
casey!
We
want
you
to
stay
safe
and
healthy.
