Hi everyone and welcome to the weekly report, I'm tori fugate with kc pet project, and here are the top three things you need to know. This week the city council passed an ordinance that will begin to convert all of the street lights into leds. This means kansas city. Missouri residents will soon have a higher quality street lighting at a lower cost. This innovative, cost-saving and energy-efficient project will replace 84 000 street lights with modern, led lights. That will bring many benefits to the city and kcmo taxpayers.

Kc pet project is beginning to host campus tours at the kc campus for animal care on a weekly basis. You can now come to the kc pet project by signing up for tours at kcpetproject.org for a 20 donation, you can sign up on kc pet projects website to come and see a vip behind the scenes.

Tour of all of our beautiful new campus here in swope park you'll be able to give enrichment treats out to the dogs, learn about clicker training techniques that we do here with our canines that are available for adoption and be able to learn all of the programs and services that kc pet project has to offer for kansas city missouri.

Kc parks recently hosted a martin luther king jr trail cleanup effort on martin luther king jr day. The walk went from mlk junior park to bruce watkins cultural center. Martin luther king jr day has become a national day of service to honor the civil rights leader. The project that's currently going on is to convert approximately 84 000 standard cobra heads to leds. We anticipate approximately 50 in energy and about 25 percent savings on the maintenance of these lights, as when they are converted, we have smart controls on the lights, which basically dims the light, or turns them on off and monitors the behavior of the different parts of the system.

The citizens should be very happy about this, because the the leds are a directional type of light, which for provide much better lighting for safety and security, which is the functions that we are lighting the streets to be able to for the drivers to see safely as they drive, detect targets on the road and also be able to have the people that are on the sidewalks walking at night be able to provide security on those sidewalks.

I'm tori fugate with kc pet project, and here are some pet safety tips to keep your pets safe during these winter months.

It's important that when you take your dogs out on walks, if it's really cold out to go ahead and shorten those walk times, you may want to wipe off their paws whenever they come in from a walk, because sometimes the salt that is used in around kansas city is going to be harmful to them, and so you want to be able to wipe off their paws when they come in from going on those long walks just so that they don't ingest any of the salt from that ice melt. That's on the ground!

If you see a pet, that's in distress out in the community and you're in kansas city missouri, you can absolutely call our animal services division by calling 311 during weekdays or by calling our main phone number 816-683-1383 here at kc pet project and our animal services division will be happy to go by and do a welfare check on those pets.

If you have a pet that lives outside it's important to have the proper supplies to keep them safe during these winter months, you want to have a dog house that is insulated and raised off of the ground. Make sure that there's a blanket or some sort of covering that can prevent them from the wind and the cold weather, be sure to use straw and not hay whenever you're keeping your pets insulated in their dog houses or a feral cat house straw is for bedding and hay is for food.

You can pick that up at any tractor supply company or any sort of store like a lowe's or home depot. Usually we'll have straw this time of year and you want to be sure to have proper food and water out at all times. If you have a water bowl out, give them fresh water so that it doesn't freeze or you can buy a pet bowl that can actually keep your water thawed for your pet, and if you can, in these really cold temperatures, bring your pets inside you know you can get a crate.

We have some supplies here. If you need it in kansas city missouri that we can give out to our community, but it's important if you can bring them inside, especially during these really cold temperatures, and during these extreme snow storms that we have.

So today is the eighth annual dr martin luther king jr nature walk and the walkers started off at the martin luther king square park at the new playground at the 15 mahomey's playground, walkers are being led by nova clark with us fish and wildlife on environmental education. Nature walk.

Then we're gonna end it here at the bruce r watkins building, where we're gonna have a speaker bill, co with green acres, urban farm and watch a short video.

Although it was a little cold and you had to walk over some ice today, we still came together as a community to commemorate dr martin luther king and his peaceful ways, while spending some time in nature.
