February is Black History Month and you can learn more by exploring the African American Heritage Trail. The annual City budget process is underway and all citizens are encouraged to provide feedback at three public budget hearings. City Hall will be closed Monday, February 21st which means trash and recycling will be delayed by one day that week.

Hello, everyone and welcome to the weekly report. I'm beth brittenstein with city planning, and here are the top three things you should know about this week. February is black history month. You can learn more about kansas city's black history on our african american heritage trail.

This virtual trail highlights many of the influential african americans who have shaped kansas city history for more information, go to aahtkc.org.

The annual city budget process is underway each year. The city council must adopt a budget for the upcoming fiscal year which begins may 1st before they adopt the budget. You have the opportunity to review the proposed budget and give your input this year. There will be online and in-person budget hearings find more information at kcmo.gov planning ahead. City hall will be closed february 21st for presidents day monday. Pickup will be tuesday, etc.

The city of kansas city in recognition of african american history month would like you to explore the kansas city african-american heritage trail, an award-winning project that the city developed with leadership from community members and partners like the black archives of mid-america, the bruce r watkins cultural heritage center and museum and umkc.

This project is a collaboration of many to recognize and honor. All of the african-american experiences throughout history here in kansas city sites include some of our well-known historic neighborhoods like 18th and vine, but also perhaps lesser-known historic sites like the sarah rector mansion.

Sarah rector, a native of oklahoma and a woman known as the first black female millionaire to live in kansas city, lived in this american foursquare at 2000 east 12th street. The trail also highlights important people in african american history in kansas city, like lucille bluford, who led the kansas city, call newspaper for five decades and became a leading voice in the local civil rights movement, making the call one of the most important black newspapers in the nation.

Ever wonder how the city of kansas city missouri, puts together its budget or how you can get involved in the process before the budgeting process? Even begins city council members, collaborate at an annual meeting to re-examine and amend the city's goals and priorities which are outlined in kcmo's city-wide business plan.

The city relies on this five-year plan to provide the big picture needed to help guide decisions which are made each year during the city's budget process. City departments create and submit their own desired budgets to city management and the finance staff.

Over several weeks, these administrative offices discuss department proposals and make decisions on what to include keeping in mind the need to keep a balanced budget, which is a legal requirement set forth in the city charter.

After a balanced budget proposal is created, it is presented to the council for review and, at the same time made public on the city's website at kcmo.gov.

For all to see, residents like you are encouraged to get involved as the city hosts several public hearings, where you can share your thoughts on the city's proposed budget.

Don't forget, city hall will be closed for presidents day on monday february 21st. Therefore, your trash and recycling collection will be delayed. One day all week, monday routes will be collected, tuesday, tuesday routes will be collected wednesday and so on. Homes usually collected on friday will be collected on saturday for more information about the city's holiday collection schedule, go to kcmo.gov trash.
