And welcome everyone. I don't have anything special or particular as a topic uh happy new year. I figure. If anybody has anything they'd like to talk about there's a lot of people upgrading to 20.05.

My upgrade went well my uh my question. For the week, the month it has comes from my cleaning up all my uh authority files, and it is whether there is or should be any substantial difference between a concubine, a mistress or some other term. That's using paramore and I'm I'm suspecting. This may just be national uh cultural bias, but uh thought I'd check to see if there was anybody that had an inclination to believe one was qualitatively different than the other.

You don't go out in public with a mistress you see on the side and that power more you use on your front.

Lawn I'm seeing if I can get the library of congress authority files up in our catalog. I know we have used the term prostitutes because you know sailors. That is a little different.

Yeah, I would say all three of your terms are more long-term.

I've realized that I've also realized that some people are not very good at it.

One of the items I did the other day had a link that was uh family life in the united states in the 17th.

Century they were ahead of their time.

Well, one usually does use the current geographic subdivision.

Yes, I can understand that and if it's certainly if it covered the 17th through the 18th century, I'd be fine with it.

And it does come down to what is best for your users. What are they going to search under yeah.

And that's where my situation is a little peculiar, because.

You say bavaria to me, and it means something very different than it does to to most of you. It means a kingdom and before that, a duchy.

And so I have to specify whether it's a kingdom, a duchy, a kingdom or a part of germany before I can actually make sense of it.

Yeah and uh library of congress also looking here at the notes for the terms, relies heavily on things like merriam-webster.

Which again may not work best for your users in your own catalog? You may want also a lot more cross references, yeah.

Yeah, it's it's a rare entry. I don't add some things to.

Right same here, I I use a lot of um 450s for the more specific terms that our users do to get them to those standardized.

I was, I can post a link here too, I like to use the library of congress link data when we're looking at these two, because it you can click around a little easier than the authorities. um So that's the subject heading for mistresses and then you can click on conch advantage as binage. However, you say that as a broader term and then kind of see how they're linked together.

You yeah, I often forget to use that.

The the other thing I've been doing is creating new categories. uh As my library, the catalog section, my library grows, I'm discovering some categories are just not broken down far enough and I've recently broken down biography, which already had a collective biography, subcategory I've created autobiographies and dual biographies.

There's a lot of works. I've got that, are you know, nicholas and alexandria, and charles and camilla and so forth.

There's also a number of interesting works like uh one called the queen and the sultan about uh queen elizabeth and uh uh an arab sultan of unclear provenance uh and the long-term relationship they had in correspondence, and so uh I found that was a useful category which I don't think I can find under lc.

No, I think, elsie pretty much uses biography, but again your users and your researchers are going to be looking for them and.

Yeah the other problems I have are not being able to make scripts run. I found one online on the the chat group that said how to eliminate all of the authorities that don't have any uh uses and it doesn't work.

Reports and scripts and such like are things on my yeah. I really need to do this list, but tuesday. I went into work and I was hoping to get some cataloging done and then uh check the oclc under library, loan requests and dockline interlibrary loan requests, and then someone came in needing help with something, and it was time for me to go home and I hadn't gotten near the books.

Well, one thing that um I've been looking at about looking at authorities that are unused is uh we've implemented. Elasticsearch and I've been cautious about any sort of automating or automated getting rid of authorities that are not used because a lot of times they're not linked because of subdivisions.

I'm going elastic so that isn't a concern yet.

Well, I I found under zebra too, that um a lot of times subdivisions, depending on the choices I made in the system preferences for matching, then a lot of yeah. So that might be something to really take a look at is: what are your related system preferences for authority matching.

Okay, um what could tr elastic, search and plaque at all related, and could someone explain in words that a medical librarian can understand just what does each do?

No, no! No, that is that that is crucial because the yes, we create the cataloging records, but people need to find them.

So I I don't know how completely accurate this is, so everybody please chime in and correct me, uh but the way I was explaining when we went from zebra to elasticsearch to my staff was that if they would picture the the old system, when you had your books, paged that you would you would walk into the library saying I want some books on french fries and then a page would go get your books on french fries.

The search engine is acting in between what you type in and those records that it's it's the piece of software that says: oh french fries. How do french fries match the various places in the record, and then I bring those records back and that's what either zebra or elasticsearch is doing now. Plaque is way out of my knowledge, but there. If someone else has more knowledge of plaque or we could find it perhaps on the coho community website.

Kind of zoned out I got distracted, I know the plaque is magical and it makes everything run faster, but that's about about all I I.

With current versions, so uh I know for us, it was a big like upgrade because we're in a consortium- and things got really slow at one point, especially.

At uh last month's meeting there was a lady, I think her name was ann from new zealand. Perhaps, and she was talking about spell checking um in the advanced editor and she had a method, but um I went ahead and opened up a bug and I put it in the chat.

So if you are interested in you know saying yes, that would be a great thing. It's.

And something we discovered we're on 2005.06.

And we discovered that after we went to that that when we were inserting a macro, like I'd, have my cursor at the position.

I want the macro to be inserted, but if my bib had blank lines somewhere up, you know further up in the record when I inserted the macro, it would um insert at the blank line, not where I had my cursor and that's a change in behavior, so um there's bug 2, 7 308 and that one I think nick has already um done the test plan and I think I signed off on that one.

But something to be aware of.

Yep you signed off on it, but yeah. That's something to definitely.

Be aware of yeah because it's you know all of a sudden, it's like where is it and then you realize? Oh it's up here, that's not where I want it to be, and it's not easy to move.

Another change that happened is um so you have your pre-selected z39.50 servers. If you have some that are pre-selected and as you're searching um like we would say, I'm doing spanish or something, and I have a certain server. I want to search, but it's not a pre-selected server, because I don't always want to search that server.

um You know I would select it and I would catalog and add my item and I'd go back and do another z39 and that would still be checked um and it would stay that way until I purposely went and unchecked it later well that has changed, and so um you will lose that from each search, so we're planning on putting a bug in for that because I look at it as sort of you have your pre-selected servers that you always want, but you know, maybe you have another sort of in-between subset of servers that it would be convenient to have those stay checked until you decide you no longer need them.

um So that's a change to be aware when.

I'm german books: I need a completely different set of sources.

Exactly and one is often approaching, cataloging similar materials in a group right, yeah.

I don't know if this would be at all useful, but how about um you could set up groups of z-3950 servers.

Effect yeah someday somebody me um probably not me- should go through making comprehensive lists of z39 50 servers. This library is expert in let's say, science fiction. This one do uh 19th century nonfiction.

We've noticed that several reliable d39 servers once their library has changed, and it usually seems that they've changed to bibliocommons as their overlay that their uh settings you know, are different, and so we can no longer connect to them. That's disappointing.

Yeah I was gonna put in a bug about adding z targets to mana and I never got that done so. Maybe 2021 is the year to write that that bug, because it would be cool if, if the quahog community was the place to go for z targets, yes,.

Speaking of mana, what on earth is it.

So there's the wiki link for mana, it's basically a database of things that people have shared. Currently it contains um uh periodical subscription patterns and sql reports. I think those are the two things that you can.

Import from mana right now.

um But it's maintained by biblieb, I think- um and it's made in a way that you can share your content and also import content from libraries that have shared their content.

So it kind of bypasses, copying and pasting things from the wiki and sharing things to the wiki. It makes it a little more streamlined.

When I get to my you know when I start cataloging cereals right now, I've been avoiding them.

Yeah, I need to go in and revise all our serials prediction patterns uh for various reasons.

Have many subscriptions, but we've got an awful lot of old periodicals.

About editing reports from mana- and I found it really helpful- I've been pulling some reports from mana and then following their directions to edit them, and it's been they've been really useful and then, once I get a nice functioning report, I try to check the coho wiki to see if it's on the reports wiki to make sure it's also there, because some people are not using mana and you want them to still have access to these reports.

Okay and then we also speak. I have another weird question: um does oclc provide free or low-cost uh service to low-income low-resource countries, uh sort of like the pinari group.

Reason I ask is- I am considering applying um to a conference of I can't remember the full name, but it's a group of african medical, librarians and they're having a conference in pretoria in june. I thought I'd see if I could work up a cola.

Presentation and I haven't been able to find a good african literature, c3950 server african medical.

I think the university of cairo had one, but it disappeared during some upheaval and hasn't come back.

I looked at it a year or two ago, but I just you know I did a test. You know thinking that hit rate was in the low 70, which was too low for me at the time to bother paying for so.

Yeah I found that I will. uh I will save so much when I'm using the advanced cataloging editor. Sometimes it's like okay, that one feels great save that one field's great save so that I can just get out of the wreck or to use that as an undo, but that takes so much time.

When I'm updating her author's catalog, which is similar but very different uh than actual cataloging books, but each process, I have a separate file. So if I do something horrible yeah, I can go back.

And it came in handy a couple weeks ago.

Sometimes before I do anything really extensive to a record I'll export it so that I've got I've got that record saved and I can re-import and overlay in yeah just in case.

And the nice thing is, uh the co is um undo import. Yes, I wish I didn't have to use that as often.

My favorite is the you import something and there are zero uh subject. Authorities listed.

Hi, I have a question, sure um we're relatively new to um koha and uh me and my I'm a cataloger and I wanted to export records and import them and I've never done that. Is there a training site or somewhere I can go to find out how to properly export them.

There are many different ways to do it. um Have you have you found the coho manual helpful at all or um yeah? The manual can be really really iffy. Let's see what we can find for you. First.

Of all, do you have a backup copy that you can experiment on and if you do something terrible, you can just make another backup copy.

um I I'm not sure about that. um I don't uh you know I just kind of call out the records and I'm not like admin, so I don't know if they back up things and I wouldn't know how to create a backup copy.

Okay, um so it sounds like there are more. There are several people's uh uh fred and cohen instead of just you just you.

Okay, um I run my own co-installation, so I always make a backup and I've probably ruined more color installations than anyone else here. Just learning so yeah start with the backup. Okay,.

I I was just gonna say uh when I do what I was talking about like saving a record before I do anything really extensive to it. It's just the save button, looking at a record that that save is actually a way to export a complete copy of the record.

And I put a link in the chat to um it's a few years old, but I think it's the applicable uh how to use the batch export tool to export records. um That's a way to get records out based on different criterias. Then you can edit them and then re-import them with the stage mark record um function.

How many records do you have okay.

I I don't know how many like I know my coworker had wanted to um export some of our of our juvenile records and uh fix them up and uh mark edit and then re-import them, and we.

Done that with coha, um I'm pretty confident with mark edit I've used that before, but I just have never exported uh records from cohab or uh well. I've imported new ones, but I've never kind of exported it, and and does it, bring out a copy when you export? Is it a copy or does it like remove it from the system.

When you use the batch export, it's just a copy.

One thing that you might also want to look at and I'm not sure if I can find it quickly, um but you can directly integrate like connect your cohort to mark edit there's some information about it there. But you can you can just once you hook that up and I think it is via z39.

um If you're active as a z target, then you can pull the records out of koha directly into mark edit and then push them back into your coho after you've made the changes and you can't pull them out in batches um and make edits so and.

Again, you'll be working with copies.

And yes, it's uh for a couple of my presentations I exported, I think, all our reference collection and our reserve collection uh just go to tools and then export data and with luck, you'll just be able to export everything with, let's say, juv tag, so it should be fairly simple.

Yeah, when I'm doing batch batch record edits in uh market I'd always just run a report to find the records I want like. I use the report to refine it down to what I want and then grab the the bib numbers from the report, and you can use that as a batch import into mark edit. Okay. So you can grab exactly what you want.

One thing I found it took me a few weeks to track down. I was I had imported a huge batch of clinical key for those written house books and none of them had an item.

Because you know there were no actual items and when I went to try to find them, I couldn't so if you can put in a 952 tag, just just with an item type for all your records, that's going to make things easier.

I've been having trouble installing market does it need to be in the same machine as the the catalog, or can I put that in a different machine.

You know our catalog is running on a server, probably in new york, and uh I have marquetta on my computer. What comp? What computer or what type do you have? Is it mac, but my catalog's on the server somewhere in texas, okay,.

Install mark edit locally, we'll cut the communications delay if nothing else, yeah.

But is it mac or ubuntu windows the machine running market on.

It's an ubuntu bear variation.

Okay, um I've installed it on ubuntu um he's. I know terry reese talked about the ubuntu version, which is a little different, but it will run. I got it dudes. I installed it in one of my ubuntu computers.

And I learned that I have to do the documentation the day of documentation.

I was going to say we have a test server, so sometimes I do experiment with the mark export and bringing things back in there. But if you don't have a test server, you might be able to go to the bywater demo site and maybe export some of your records and then import them into the bywater demo site and play around with things you might play around with modification templates or something and all that data gets reset. So it shouldn't be a problem.

And we've been doing some exporting and importing lately and I've found that um in the mark export tool you can select by item type, but I really wanted to be able to get down to collection or location. And we're working on trying to find a way to more easily delete digital records, basically overdrive records when they've, gotten weeded out of the collection- and the only thing I have to base it on- is the isbn from overdrive. But I need like a bib record number or something like that to really get to the records.

So there's there's like not a match point. So what we're working on right now is taking the mark records, um I created a mark modification template to copy the isbn into the barcode field. We actually have item records on our our digital records.

And then in mark edit, if um seems like, the newer records have the subfield queue in the o2o, but a lot of older records. Don't so I went through and there's an rda tool in mark edit. That will allow you to split that out, and so we've been taking out all the old records doing that in mark edit and then I'm bringing them back in and using the mark modification template to put the isbn into the barcode and then the plan is to be able to take um the list of barcodes and delete the records.

uh Here's another idea of I think it's a little more clunky than yours, but that's what I've been doing is um take the isbn search on that and then add it create a list and then export everything include the entire mark record from the list.

Digitalocean is a few cents a month per gigabyte. So, okay, if you have a 500 gigabyte database because something terrible happened, you know it sort of grew.

And we outgrew our server last month and had to bump up to another one so that raised our fee three dollars a month and the board got involved.
