We will split this room and have two separate presentations,, but for the beginning we will all be together, intermediate and beginner contributors..

Welcome to the contributor summit. um, this: is they the new contributor workshop.? We know that our community is large.

We know that it is sometimes overwhelming to get started, contributing to.

A

Coopernetti's., what this workshop it aims to do is help you show you around some of our.

A

Communities coobernetti's isms, some of the ways we operate and help you find inspiration.

A

And ways to get started in the area that you are interested.

Um,, this is captain cube.. He is very excited to see all of you, and, um,.

We cannot wait to have you all along for the crazy ride and you know,.

Have you all get working on some awesome features and pull requests and bugs.

Because we need you., we really, really do. um,.

All right, so this morning is the combined session for everybody.

What I will do, excuse, me,, I didn't even have carbonated drinks, this time.

So the very first thing I want to show you is how to open a pull request against.

Kubernetes. and this'll be really hard because I'm also holding a microphone.

So the first thing I want to show is how we would open a pull request against.

Okay. there we are. alright.. This is coobernetti's the core repository.

When you go on one to fix a bug in coobernetti's,.

The first thing you would do is,. Let me try this thing.

You would go to this button,.

A

You would go ahead and fork the kubernetes repository.

Who, in this room, has forked the coobernetti's repository? good job.

You know how to read: emails. excellent. um,.

How long did it take you? five minutes.

A

10 minutes,, depending on your machine. it's,, it's quite a big repo. so, um,.

The first time I clone it,, I was actually a little bit,. I mean, yeah.

So, um,, you would go ahead and you would make a fork onto your own repository on cooper,.

Onto your own github and to your own, get hub account.

A

And then you would go to your computer.

Yeah, yeah. okay. um, and create that place in ufl structure.. Here's kubernetes.

Um,, I am currently on the master branch of kubernetes.. Can everyone see this?.

So let me walk you through what will happen. uh, let,.

Let's just kind of walk through the basic steps of opening a coobernetti's pull.

A

Way, quest., I'm going to show you what my remotes look like.

A

Was happening. oh, because I need to go, I'm not actually in the correct place.

A

I'd had this all set up. um,, so I'm going to go into my go. Path.

A

So now we're back into a normal live demo. Territory. uh,.

Let me actually clear so that you can see this is work. no,.

Yes., oh wow., cool., um,,.

See,, where am I at? oh, source first.

There we go. okay. so now, I'm in the kubernetes org and my go path.

And you can all see that I have coobernetti's right there.

Very cool., so, uh, remember. I said you want to fork to your own good hub and then clone from there.

A

And the other thing that you will need to set up is a remote and the way that I.

A

Recommend doing it and that a lot of the kubernetes automation recommends it is.

A

To call the kubernetes or grump mode upstream and your own remote origin.,.

A

So if I go and I hit get remote dash, v,.

A

You can see that my origin is get hep.com going to be a sanger, slash, kubernetes.

A

Dot get and the upstream remote is kubernetes,. Kubernetes dot. get.

A

Um,, the next thing you do is you check out a branch.

A

I have done this because I wanted to make sure that I don't bore everyone with.

A

Writing code in front of people., so my branch is san diego,.

A

But before I do that, I'm going to go and, uh,.

A

Run a get fetch.

A

and the reason I run a get fetch.

A

Is so that I have a little bit more control over what is happening.

A

So this might take a while- and I might have to interrupt it because again,.

A

The network is a little bit slow,, but the very first thing you want to do is make sure that you're in sync, with.

A

Upstream master., so this is going to be a bit,.

A

I might have to,, I might have to cancel out of this.

A

Um,, but you all are going to do it later. Hopefully, when the network is fixed.

A

All right. um, and then you would run a rebase.

A

And upstream. yeah,, I can type in front of people with one hand.. It's great.

A

A

Very cool., of course, it's up to date because I didn't actually get to fetch anything.

A

Because if the network, that's fine. um,, now I'm going to look at my branches.

A

Normally, I would just check out a good branch,, a new branch.

A

In this case, I have one prepared, so get check out san diego.

A

All right, here we are., so let's look at the good log.

A

Let me clear again because I'm again at the bottom.

So what you'll see is, um,.

A

I went ahead and found myself an issue and let's go back to coobernetti's.

A

Um,, let's see here. I'm going to look for this issue.

A

A

Pardon me, while I find this. okay., so what I did in order to find a kubernetes issue. Is I looked for,.

A

Let's look on the left: here. where's, my pointer? um, right, here., yeah.

A

Awesome. um,, I looked on the left here and there was a whole set of labels and we'll talk a.

A

Lot about these labels., these labels are what makes a coobernetti's automation work and one of the.

A

Labels, that's on there is the purple one. good. First issue.

A

And what a good first issue should be, and often is, if you're lucky,.

A

Is that it encounters a really a fixed set of steps that you can go through and.

A

Follow. um, and you will be able to make pretty good progress, even though you might not have.

A

All the information, um, to start hacking on all of coobernetti's. um,.

A

So in this case, this is a cleanup issue. um,.

A

All we're doing is, we are committing changes, um,.

A

On, um,, we are, we're actually fixing code comments so that the go lint package does not fail.

A

Normally., I would show you what that looks like,, but we are almost at time for this particular part of the demo.

A

Um,, let me show you the diff instead.

A

So what I did was I removed a package from the goland failures and I fixed a lot.

A

Of code comments, you can see in red and yellow.

A

Oops,, that was the wrong direction.. Here we are.

A

So I added a bunch of comments. if you're familiar with go the go. Linter requires that you formulate your code.

A

Comments in a certain way for exported packages., and if you don't do that,.

A

The linter will yell at you. and because of a lot of unfortunate history and circumstances,.

A

The kubernetes go lint, uh, file, a gold, land. um,.

A

Ignore file is fairly large.

A

and basically, what this issue is is an easy way to go. Look at the,.

A

Uh, to go, look at the code and see where things live and fix a few linter issues.

A

In the meantime,, that's all this is,, but it's a pretty good one for a demo.

A

Um,, so that's what I've been doing.

A

And so now I'm going to,, I normally. I would show you what this looks like in the, in the, in the gooey.

but, um,, let's see..

The next thing that you want to do is: do a good push and you're going to push to.

A

Your origin., that is, your fork,, your personal fork,.

A

Dash you or origin.

A

And I'm going to say san diego.

A

And that is a spot that shouldn't be there. all right,.

A

We'll see what happens. this might again take awhile.. Oh my god,.

I have no idea. sorry.. I don't want this to sage. yeah,. This might not work. um,.

A

So, uh,, let's see., let's cancel that.

Alright, so again,, these are some issues that you might run into later. so,.

But what would do is you would push it to your, um,.

A

Origin and um, and then open a pull request from there. um,.

A

I'm actually going to go ahead and do that directly from my machine, so that then.

A

We can go to get hub and see what that looks. Like.

A
