Why is Anyone Using Kubernetes Anyway? - Tasha Drew & Josephene Pynadath, VMware; Gaby Moreno Cesar, IBM; Carl J Pearson

Have you ever taken a step back and wondered, what is up with this whole Kubernetes thing? Why are people using it all over the place? Is it becase of Phippy and Captain Kube? The Docker whale being so cute and retro? Or is there something else going on? The team at SIG Usability had these questions too, and we have embarked on a two year user research study to find out what exactly is going on. Our goal is to make sure the upstream Kubernetes' community deeply understands the needs and goals of the users of Kubernetes, and how they are met and not met today. Join this talk for a deep dive into our study and data, and what we're learning about our users. Spoiler: getting started with Kubernetes is real hard, and we should fix our on-ramp. Learn more at our talk!

Kubernetes: Putting the Focus on Upstream Usability with SIG Usability - Tasha Drew, VMware & Gabby Moreno Cesar, IBM

SIG Usability is the Kubernetes’ community’s newest special interest group. In this presentation we will go over our user research project to better understand end users of Kubernetes and how the upstream project can better serve them. We will also briefly go over and intro to the SIG for people who are interested in getting started as new contributors! We are a very open and friendly group, and encourage people of all skill sets, skill levels, and experience with open source to join us. You can also check out and join our work by joining our google group, attending our meetings, and/or participating via github.

SIG Usability: Unifying the Experience for the Kubernetes User - Gaby Moreno Cesar, IBM & Pamel Shinh , VMware

SIG Usability is focused on the core end-user usability of the Kubernetes project. This includes efforts in user research, internationalization, and accessibility. We will be going over some of the SIG's initiatives, opportunities to get involved, as well as diving into the topic of what makes up a usability contribution? Pulling from the field of cognitive science, we will present some well-established usability and software experience principles that both code and non-code contributors can use to expand the types of contributions they make to open source projects.
