Here we go live so welcome. Everyone to lay five's website meeting today is January 9 and 2020. It's 2023 Happy, New Year. So um in every lay five meeting we follow our weekly tradition to introduce newcomers. So if you haven't got a chance, it's not always echoing.

That's great great Aditya, so I don't think we have more newcomers on the call. So with that, let's directly jump on to today's agenda items. First up we will be discussing about lay five IO website updates next, we'll be discussing about Meshi dot. Io then discuss dot layer. 5.0 then play dot, mystery and last we'll be discussing about machine UI enhancements.

So do we have uh udit on the call? Yes, oh that's great. So Ajit would like to share your updates on site performance.

There are a bunch of things which was not working properly like even the way we are loading the Google scripts earlier it was around 1.0.6 seconds and X of 30 kvps, then I just modified the way we load the script. So instead of using the plugin which we're using I, am directly using the Gatsby node uh dot JS file, image, I'm, calling all the functions, so this did actually improve the performance, but I think the time zone directivity part is not still not able to figure out.

What's the issue in this, then there were also bunch of cavities like react tables I, try to like use the loadable in wherever this coupon was being used, but there was not any sharing it. Yes, it was still showing this error and and yeah one more thing. I actually tried.

Also, the installing the preact plugin, which is like a react, only must be less JavaScript less than 30k reviews, but I think there are still some error about the version which we should use so I think I would be taking some other PR in which I will just try if everything is working properly, because I think this could break a lot of things.

If we try to use the uh then there are some images which were actually not visible when we load the file, so we can just lazy load them, so this would actually improve the performance and for mobile usage around 90 and in desktop I. Think it's much better.

Yeah smoking all the time, but just uh time to track everybody mobile is still pending, which I think I cannot improve further, because even the Gatsby docs file, which is the official file. They also have like a 10 second problem.

The only thing that they recommended was to just try using preact is I. Think I would try in some other PR.

A suggestion in chat regarding the pre-react plugin that so nikhil would like to say on that.

Oh yeah, it's not compatible.

Supports all the plugins also because I think it did not support all the react. Ecosystem.

Thank you next, it would eat. Maybe one thing would be if you were to drop that your notion notes into a Google doc in the community shared Drive, other folks, it'll be a little more discoverable um and other folks can jump in and add some comments. So you were just as a quick recap. You were saying before some of these improvements.

Like you know, the performance scores vary, but it seemed like we were hovering, maybe around 40 or like a score of 40-ish between mid-30s, mid 40s.

And so yeah, and so was the I wasn't quite clear: were you showing a score of 49, as you were, showing the score of 49 is like the starting point right like and then.

Yeah, the ending.

Okay, okay, um and so this ending point of 90 is that mobile.

Okay, nice and and our most egregious number I guess was the time to interactive and we're did that say about where it was or did you did? We end up shaving off a second.

Part was, it was 9.8, but it's now nine, it's nearly the same. I think, okay,.

And the culprit there like, when you look at some of the um suggestions underneath that particular score, the suggestions are really about like order in which um JavaScript is loading.

Yeah yeah one session was that we should load the Google tag manager and see which I did already it does not. That is there no, but about the react table. I think I could not buy anything.

And one of the things that I think you were someone you maybe were mentioning it last week and then, um when Colby was taking a quick look, it seemed like Google tag. Manager was jumping out as being you know as us doing it wrong and either I. Don't know. If that us doing it wrong is like mostly Us loading it in the wrong in the less than optimal place, or you know like the the wrong sequence or if we have it configured incorrectly as well, and.

I think, as you learned using some package only which was about Cassidy, but it was not loading. Probably there was some other blocks with direct, which mentioned like you can use it differently, like.

Like whenever we scroll, we then init the Google tag manager event. So basically we don't roll it every time, even when it's not required and we load it after, like 3.5 seconds also after Dom content is loaded. So this is a small Improvement.

We call the this is that does that seem about so so there's a couple of improvements here, one like well I think it need to repeat that you're saying hey. If, if it's already loaded, we don't we just initialize the tool, we don't download it again and then two you wait about three and a half seconds before you even start to load it or you start to initialize it. Maybe.

So you actually So. Currently, if we go to the layer to file layer 5.io, it already sends an event to the Google tag manager as soon as the website is loaded. But now actually we can wait till the user Scrolls or do any action and then send so. This saves us some JavaScript.

That's interesting, I mean that's a I mean it does have an effect. It's interesting. It does have an effect on how it is that events are recorded, um and maybe maybe some of our statistics would go down a little bit to avoid uh Bots, search, search, Bots or Bots that are indexing.

The site, who might not hang out for very long but I, don't know that that would necessarily address part of the core concern it seems like there might be two concerns about Google tag manager, the I think the primary concern of which is when it is being loaded and the changes you have are probably positive.

A

However, I don't know that they affect when it's being loaded, so it's still being loaded at the same time that it was before right, because the 3.5 second wait. That's an initialization, that's that's a weight on when to send an event, not necessarily a weight on when to load. It am I, am I understanding that right here.

The Koreans initializing after 3.5 seconds, I think and then we are creating create that.

Oh I see okay, so initialize in this sense is the same thing as download the same thing as okay.

Okay, so this was actually the before part will Dimension like it was going to be 0.6 second, and this was the potential series.

This was the session given by this lighthouse, and then after this place, it was long paid for 0.3 seconds.

Yeah yeah, yeah, okay, okay, so I was misunderstanding. It looks like the initialization in this case is downloading as well, and so um Colby uh did any any thoughts you have here.

I haven't had a chance to really uh dig into this. This part of it I'm still working on my development server, but um but no I don't have any feedback. I think he's done some good improvements, though nice yeah.

Nice yeah would it um was it an easy task? I mean.

Pretty pretty detailed right I mean um that that's just that, that's in part why it has probably plagued this for a while it takes it takes some time set aside to go through each of the various specific items.

um Even when I look at it cursorarily just now, I was misunderstanding: what initialize was versus download so yeah it takes. It takes a certain amount of attention and it's also one of those things that you know, as as we merge PRS on a daily basis. It's relatively easy for performance concerns to escape the pr reviews, and so um is it your PR or is it someone else's PR um ayush? Maybe that has that looks at incorporating Lighthouse as part of the build process.

But when you do, when you want to speak, feel free to unmute and and chat so nice, so hey I'm, just waking up it's Monday morning fairly early um I didn't mean to inject myself. So much I just wanted to uh understand. Some of the details of what odita has done um is really meaningful. It's not the easiest thing to do. I hope that you're taking away a few learnings there's a few things.

Maybe it would eat for us collectively to learn from what you're doing and and maybe change some of the practices going forward to make sure that we don't regress on performance, which is why I brought up a youth sharma's PR, so if in his PR he's incorporating in use of Lighthouse as part of the build process, so every time that that you know after this pull request, merges every time if there's a pull request opened um part of the analysis of the pull request. Part of the review process will be the results of lighthouse.

um So indeed, given your focus on performance I think it would be really helpful if you were to spend a little bit of time. Reviewing this pull request here um and and see how it yeah see how it, uh if we're, if we're going to be measuring the right things going forward as well.

uh One question was I'm audible. First of all, yes,.

So uh first question was: I saw that you are injecting the Google tag manager, script using the Gatsby browser file and you're using event listeners for that. So why are we doing so can't we use the script API that that's BSN is inject.

The script directly in the photo itself like after the body is loaded, because in that case you are adding an event listener that that two are event listeners that would be triggered each time a user comes on the site that is scroll, Mouse move ad, uh even though you have added a flag to check the function would not trigger, but it's still again an overload to add a event is like the event. Lister would anyway would be fired. However, the function would not be executed, but the event is still impact.

Yeah I think I still have to look into the script tag. I think I was also looking into it. There was some things like the way it loads and we have to check like if.

You have to defer.

It or it should be something else.

You can defer it like if you just search for catfish script API, you would find that option.

Script: APK yeah: this should give you the ability to add the particular script, whether be it before the head or after uh before the body or after the body is the head or after itself, so doing it. That way would be a better option rather than having adding a event listed because.

Ultimate motive is to.

Avoid loading the Google tag manager before the body load site, so basically we could use the script API and load the Google tag manager after the body would see and we won't have to use any timeout also to load it after the after 3.5 seconds or any random.

I think a lot of people recommend using Party Town for all these four participates, but it's still experimental here like this is the main default for loading. All the third party slips, like then I think they would mention. Google yeah, see.

Again again, if we used to, if, if you spot it on, it would be a third party app that would again bloat up the total. You know package size that has been downloaded on the initial number part.

Of this script, API only this uses this party down. Okay,.

It's part of the script that then it's a different case like you could try all the possible scenarios, but my recommendation is if we could use it by The Gas We scripted there. That is better because in that case it won't be like you know, adding any more event, listeners or any more packages.

I saw that you added the lazy loading parameter like attribute to the static image component for in a particular couple of.

Images default.

Only yeah so I think it's default in got me, so you don't need to add that battery like by default Gatsby lose C images like lazy notes image, so that attribute is not needed. Actually.

I was trying one more thing like even after I added like height and.

Weight yeah, yeah, I I, know I, have see. I have seen that issue even I'm, not sure why they give that. Like complain about that particular problem, though we have static with the right for all the images I.

Think I also tested this netlifier, which was deployed, and there we mentioned like you- should defer the uh images which did not display but I think we were already using lazy road. But it's still so in one.

Of the solution here so even after using the lazy loading attribute, let's dot error gone or are we still seeing that.

I think you have to deploy this again. I don't have permission here to see.

Okay, just a second applying it right away: anyways, okay, once the preview is there after I got the preview once the previous set do compare if it actually benefits or not Okay, so because from what I see, okay, I, actually, okay, okay, no no I have not do it. Yeah, okay, don't test it out once once the previous said, because that wanted and the other thing is the metrics that you are seeing for the lighthouse that is 90.

that you are seeing, because you, you are doing a performance report on the localhost rate or you are doing on the hosted cycle.

So I'm going on the locals on the production, build which was mentioned good.

So the the that is a different catch altogether, but anyways. If you do it or test it out on the preview link as well, the actual value may vary from the hosted one that is layer 5.0, but it would be somewhat near it so I just tested it out and it's 75 for for us it could go about 80 or so at Max, but again, that's still a good, improve it like very good Improvement, compared to what we had earlier so yeah these, where you need two points that I had to add.

Cool so yeah, thanks to that it was a great update. So moving on to next item is on machine integration spreadsheets by Shivam, so Shivam do we have Shivam on the board yeah.

Yeah so fingers uh this is the necessary Integrations and uh where we are facing a couple of issues uh like the icons are created in the spreadsheet are quite correct and, for example, here the iPhone for search manager, they're, not correct, and the Emissary address icons are not is not loading properly and even the E himself changed the and things I can a few hours ago, but it's not working correctly till now.

So the thing is: if we go on to the integration spreadsheet and they are not being properly resourced from this website, for example, we will be Ingress, icon, Amazon. The SVG color is this file. If we go and see it in an SVG viewer, uh it's correct here, but it's not being properly visible, so we're facing some of the issues here and also.

We can also see that it's become the opposite here. It's uh coming the white logo instead of the color one, so they are being oppositely resourced, and this is for this particular Emissary. And if we go look at this third manager- and here we have the.

Yeah, okay, so this thing uh there are three search managers and this one is working properly, but we we had installed the same logo for everyone and we can see here. The logo is correct, but it's not being properly resourced and maybe they are being taken from another cell uh yeah. So this is the main issue that we are facing in this spreadsheet and same is for the kubernetes logo. The kubernetes logo is correct in this spreadsheet, but it is not uh showing correctly here and.

Other is and yeah and that's.

Your question question: if I could on the kubernetes logo, that's that's um well curious, one to dig into and yeah our since you're on the call. Do you mind digging into the Emissary Ingress um I? Don't to see if you can fix that particular one.

This small white one but thing is this- is being sold from I, don't know where inside we spreadsheet, because if I search this SVG file, even in this spreadsheet, we I cannot find any SVG code with the this logo.

Yeah, oh, you know what uh okay that's interesting. What might be I haven't met. You what's happening is that there were a number of pages that uh were created and being displayed on the website prior to us, bringing in the integration spreadsheet and using the integration spreadsheet as the mechanism to collect and publish all this info, so it might be, and when we, when we did that, we didn't necessarily outright overwrite all the existing pages, so it might be that there's a stale reference um I, don't know this is just a guess.

So when you go to source for excuse me, when you go to the source for this particular page, perhaps we are. We have hand decoded an alternate reference to that logo. That would be one thing to verify.

um So that's something for us to consider in terms of the logic of the script that runs every night.

You know if um the logic of the script that runs is if there has been, if there's a diff between the two files um it uses Git, it uses git to check out the repo um it grabs the contents of the spreadsheet and when it does a diff between the two in this case, since the only thing that it's would be, including in the MDX, is just the name of the file reference which would be like nginx, hyphen, color, dot, SVG to this script, Nothing changed, um and so consequently it did not update the SVG file.

So yeah, it's something for us to improve upon all. If anybody wants an easy, well, an early, goaling project.

um This is this is relatively straightforward logic and I'll point out where this golang, oh yeah, actually it's well. This is the workflow that kicks off the golang script um and so I'll point out where it is I, don't know that it's actually right there under on line 40 inside of the mystery mystery repo scripts component. Okay, well, good! Does anybody else? Have feedback for children or Shivam? Do you did you get everything that you needed in terms of feedback.

uh It was just another thing that uh we also needed a new logo for new icon for Arc, uh since we are using the old, GitHub icon right now,.

We are using the GitHub icon for now, and I could not find any other online for this.

Perhaps you could open an issue in the measuri measuri repo talking about how the logic needs to be enhanced a little bit to ensure that if a logo file the contents of the logo file changes, but that's reflected.

I'll open the issue, just another thing was there: it was about derivation of mesmap page. Let me discussed it a few hours ago and we made a new mesh map videos. Since we tried to embed videos, we tried remembered videos in the website.

To highlight the features better.

We can only see the images or to highlight it better. We use some videos to highlight this Institute of collaboration also better. We can also add some Daniels or make the newer also collaboration as well.

Cool, so this is a call for volunteers for any uxers or maybe would-be visual designers that are on the call. So we use figma as our.

um Good, so man I'd so gladly want to throw in some sarcasm right now, um which is I. Think I can't help myself I think I had um for breakfast I had uh bananas and I put some like hot honey. It was with some nuts and stuff which is like sort of pertinent to what we're talking about, but not really, and so heart um I should meet.

um Did I say that sarcasm with the most amount of love that I can, if you get the joke, if you don't um yeah, please that we use figma here to design the um websites. If uh we need a few fresh ideas for how to show off some of the features, there's a long list of features inside of this plugin and we're not doing it justice instead, we're showing my ugly mug on part of the page and what we need to show is um well how you can do well.

I won't even go through the features, there's a lot, but that it really isn't the point. The point of what's needed from anyone who's on the call or not, is well just some um visual design, some ways of highlighting features. Maybe that's um some graphical elements, maybe that's inclusion of video like Shiva mosang.

um There are a few reusable components that are on the website already um like. If you were to navigate to the Mastery project page there's a couple of different sections, a couple different components that let you peruse features, um and so we can reuse some of those but I figure. It's also a good time for to allow anyone that does visual design to try their hand at it. So ashmit sounds like that's you that's great.

Okay, what December this December 13 and what year just in case, like somebody from the future, is trying to view this page. So um that is uh that's what I I actually had intentions to do? Oh, this is what I've done so far, so I was looking to create a PR, but then I haven't really done it with that pretty clear about them. I haven't really created an API on this, but then I've already opened it. So yes, I would value any feedback.

Yeah, does everybody have feedback, um so most you have I think context for what's going on here is that um Casey is integrating data from the discussion forum into the meshery.io website um and he so he's helping bring together.

You know, yeah, the the two different sites he's helping encourage um activity and participation inside of the discussion forum um he's also helping enhance the experience on messery.io with uh you know, with this with a list of active discussions. In this case, most popular discussions now you're determining popularity based on the number of likes per um or number of views per page.

Views views, that's actually, the the metrics is used. Okay, yeah.

And uh yeah did anybody get any feedback um in in lieu of feedback? Leonard will probably get his PR emerged.

So if, if anyone thinks that it's like there's a better Matrix I think like I was thinking if you was better given the fact that the amount of people that visual posts meets, it will be quite popular or something I could have just like, but not everybody that I've used it that abuse the post likes them. So um these are like the two Matrix on on the ground. uh We could use remote countable.

uh We are still trying to figure out how what to do with the output, maybe in the future outputs I want to try to use for for taking the most popular uh the discussion or likes, whichever one. So um aside, that maybe views should surprise for now. So if you have, if you have any feedback, that would be, that would be really appreciating on this product.

Yeah, do you sounds good to me unless somebody has other feedback, we're probably just overthinking it like yeah view is great. You should you can create a different one um and put it on a different page of the site.

That's you know most discussed uh posts um we should, and we should at some point try to ensure that what doesn't happen is that we're saying, hey, here's, the most popular and it's by views and then people um click on them, like they click on the first one and all they do is perpetuate the fact that it that first one will only ever be the most popular for all time.

So we should try to ensure that that the data that's being used is being is like done on a rolling 30-day period, so that that'll be something you'll have to dig into um cool. Okay, good, that's my piece! You should go to the next topic.

For people to take away from what pranav is doing here, one is that so this is a jackal based site, and so it uses it runs on Ruby and of the. If you go back to your code for a moment, part of what you were using there was the four last for Loop dot. Last that's an excellent um operator or something that I don't think at least I know.

For my part, it isn't necessarily always obvious where what resource you can use to go, find those type of operators, there's one that I had found, I think from the Shopify engineering team, I think it's them. That is pretty pretty well done. It lays out some Advanced like iterators and operators for gosh. What's it called it's, not um this type of Ruby Library Africa. Do you know what it's called pranav um yeah I have to find it, but it's a great resource so anyway, just a good I'll. I'll find a point now.

The the second thing to maybe take away from what pranav is doing here is well there's another hidden, gotcha caveat with working with um Jackal, for um it might just be for this site itself for the doc site. So when it'll handle back stock, backslash backslashes your forward, slashes sorry it'll handle forward slashes slightly differently, depending upon whether it's in Dev mode, when you're, when you do make site locally, it will be in Dev mode. So there's two config files.

If you were to go to this the root of the docs directory, you should see a config.yaml and like a config, hyphen dev.yaml, um and so one of those it gets run. When you build the site locally, the other one gets run when it goes to production production being when it gets merged here, and the way that forward slashes are handled is different between the two and so it'll kind of throw you off so there's the underscore config.

So these two files should really be like identical other than I believe the way in which they handle forward slashes and so I call it out because um well it could. um It could throw you off.

Like especially as you but I think pranava, with what you've done, your change Works, irrespective of these development versus production, um because I think the the Crux of what you were doing was just hey like if you're the last element, if you're the, if you're on the Le, if you're a leaf page out of this whole tree of of pages of architect or whatever Pages you're on there's this cookie crumb Trail. Here we there's also a lowercasing of measuring. We should always capitalize the m in measure and I, say the Emin Mastery, because I said that to someone else recently we should capitalize measuring and they they mistook it as being like the entire word.
