With the community, this is the Microsoft 365 and Power Platform development. Bi-Weekly call today is May 25th. This is our last call of May. Everybody I am so excited, but what am I more excited for the call to happen which we're in right now all right.

So what's gonna happen agenda we are going to talk about the latest updates on the community, a variety of things like pnp.net libraries, Powershell latest on Yo teams, MGT Microsoft teams, toolkit independent publisher, connectors, and then we got a few samples when I see a few I mean over a thousand samples script, samples, team samples, Power Platform samples and then everybody's favorite Time picture time so get those fantastic faces.

Ready cameras turned on and ready to go for that, then our three All-Star presenters of the day ashwar, is going to cover Pi flows, power effects, internet of things, that's gonna, be super exciting Muhammad's, going to cover automating DLP policy creation and Power Platform from an existing policy and Martin is going to cover Microsoft teams, phone number Management on a budget with SharePoint list and Azure automation.

Hey we all on a budget, so lots of amazing stuff that we have in store for us today, but first, let's share with you some resources that are available to everyone, everyone- and that includes you in the community. So we've got videos subscribe today and you'll get the latest updates LinkedIn group for discussions.

This is a great opportunity for you to collaborate with others in the community on LinkedIn, then we've got open source initiatives, things like PNP, JS and CLI for Microsoft 365., so many Fantastic sources and repositories and initiatives to help you use the technology better and, of course, we've got our sample galleries, many of which we'll hear about today, team samples, spfx samples, Power Platform list formatting. All these Community samples roll up to the adoption.microsoft.com, where you can have your own little personal space, showing all the samples you contributed.

Jethro is going to continue the introduction to Microsoft Viva connections for education, and then our very own vesa is going to cover the latest on spfx. On building extensibility for SharePoint so get that added to your calendar. Tell me more I think we can help with that Hey Hey, listen, my first GitHub uh pull request. I was scared and I reviewed it about a bazillion times and then I submitted it and as soon as I hit submit I realized I made a mistake uh and turns out. It was not a big mistake, but after I did my first pull request. I was like: oh, you know.

If I had known how easy this would have been, I would have started contributing years ago, and so that's why the sharing is caring is here to help is both David and I, and many of the people in the patterns and practices team uh felt this week. We were scared of GitHub.

We sharing is Gang, we're going to show you how to do your first time pull request, we're gonna, do it together in a uh small group, non-recorded safe space and we're going to by the end you're going to have done your first pull request and then, if you know how to do pull requests, you can actually submit, and you can set up spfs samples, and things like that. So please sign up for sharing. Is hearing if you're interested in contributing to the community you can, you can go to aka.ms sharing Dash is Dash caring.

We have a whole bunch of sessions that are listed here. We're scheduling new sessions very soon and we're looking for volunteers. If you are passionate about sharing with people and you want to teach people and you want to help them get started, uh please let us know, and we will uh we'll have you join us and then, once you have done your first contribution, you can be recognized through our community recognition program. You can have cool badges that you can show people on your LinkedIn profile on your website on your resume.

Thank you, Pro tip when you get the tattoo, do it without the year lesson learned the hardware there folks when we uh turned the calendar over so yeah, maybe just don't leave the year out all right. Let's get into some Project Specific updates and we're gonna turn it over to Bert.

Thank you David. um So what happened in the pnp.net world um a couple of things for PNP framework, which is our older Library, did work on the extraction of content types. So when you extract content types from a site into a provisioning template and that list content type is hidden, they know that's respected in the export to the XML, so really good on the cross Decay side, which is the newer Library um Martin uh Ellis, his name Lloyd. So let's did a lot of work on improving our site, collection, admin, setting experience.

Now you can actually replace all the site, collection, admins of site collection versus initially just adding them. So that's a good Improvement done by Martin and we had some content type handling fixes. So, uh of course, okay. You can just type.com type up and do everything on the contact web as simple as it would be on the regular site, but that now really works well.

And lastly, and but not at least usage is going up again more than 160 000 tenants, 45, a 54 billion requests, so a lot of work going on there and a lot of traffic. So thanks all for using it and for contributing.

Thank you thanks. David thanks, Bert um yeah, PNP Powershell. It's a cross platform, Powershell module that you can use to direct with my various Microsoft 365 Services. uh What we did in the latest nightly builds. uh We added two new brand new command. Let's move, pnb down and move PNP term set to move the term sets inside the term stores uh yeah. One of the very uh highly requested features was the ability to add this parameter open in new tab to the add PNP navigation node. So this will work for the modern Pages as well.

uh We also added couple of new parameters to the set PNP tenant command, as well as improved uh the uh yeah improve the web subscription, as well as the home page and the PNP page command. Let's relate it to the translation, requests and yeah. That's pretty much from our side and we'd. Absolutely love to hear from you so feel free to reach out on the discussion forums or reach out to us on the issue list. If you run into any issues so yep, that's all from me who do you David thanks, awesome.

Thank you, David and I hope this time my mic is working as it wasn't working the uh barbecue call before um so for your teams we're still on version 4.1.0, but we're already working on 4.20 and we're already discussing what we want to pack in version five so be prepared more infos to come. But, as you might know, um there were a lot of announcements at built regarding teams, development, co-pilot, plugins and stuff.

We want to make sure to integrate all of this goodness into your teams as well, and apart from that, um we currently hit uh quite a good usage numbers there.

um We hurled around on Co-op Summit in uh visit of this week, to get our hands together and see what we want to work on for the next versions of your teams and if you want to contribute, feel free to file an issue on GitHub. If there's something missing from your perspective or if you want to contribute to the Yeoman generator, feel free to file a PR and we're happy to have you on board thanks David.

Thanks David yeah teams, look at 5.0 is out and if you're not familiar team's toolkit is our tools for developing uh apps for teams Outlook and the M365 app, and so we have our 5.0 release, and that includes lots of good stuff like integrated tunneling using Dev tunnel. So this is the same thing that powers code spaces and the vs Dev tunnel. So it's now integrated in teams toolkit and we also have a whole new feature set around composing, the automation that toolkit does so. This gives you the flexibility that everyone's been asking for lets.

You reuse existing IDs and resources and really let you uh get into the nuts and bolts of the toolkit. If you need to that way, you have the flexibility to build things. The way you want. We also have lots of new samples, including samples that work directly in code spaces. So you can see how to do that, so you don't even have to install anything locally and then we also have a hackathon coming up next week. So we have lots of good announcements at build.

If you have missed those uh like Stefan announced, we have some features. Coming for plugins uh for co-pilot, so look forward to that I'll be talking more about that soon and join the hackathon and use whatever tools you want and we'd just love to see what everyone can build and share feedback with us on the platform. Awesome thanks John. Let's talk about some Microsoft graph toolkit or MGT 2.10.1, just shipped as the latest stable release, so update your packages. You also just shipped v3.0.0. preview.2 is available, so you can try it out um always looking for new samples, so definitely get involved there. If you'd like to contribute those are fantastic uh and it'll get you a badge, so you could also help out with the issues. Ak dot, Ms, slash, MGT issues so definitely get involved. Mgt is a fantastic way to get graph into your environment.

Everyone I am so sorry, I've been a little quiet lately, but that's because we have a lot of things going on in the world of connectors. In case you missed our announcement. A few weeks back, we are now at over 1 000, certified Power Platform connectors. That's spanning independent publisher, verified publisher and first party Microsoft, made across power automate power, apps and Azure logic. Apps I, just wanna emphasize that chart on the left there, because that shows the true power of the community and making this goal a reality.

There have been more connectors made by you guys by our independent publisher than by Microsoft herself, so this Milestone would not be possible without you, I'm gonna drop a ton of links in the chat, so you guys can read all about the blog post and I also wanted to point out some awesome news that we announced at build I always say that Power Platform, connectors spanned power, automate, powerapps and Azure logic apps, but I also teased in my conversation with David and Hugo last week in connections that you can start to see us outside of just Power Platform.

An announcement that Rajesh jaw made it build yesterday is that Power Platform connectors are going to be some of the power behind M365 copilot. So you can start to see some of these awesome API Integrations in other areas across bakersoft, like teams, if you really really love connectors and you want to learn more and go in depth, scan that QR code to join the connector specific Labs call once a month. Thank you guys so much and thank you for all your contributions.

You can have some Powershell scripts examples uh for uh PRP Powershell CLI for 365 and Microsoft graph, SDK SP Management Shell. So it's your One-Stop shop for all of those and we've had a ton of you, a new samples and scenarios.

um So we've got two with the PMP Powershell by Casper Larson, which is super super cool. There. We've also got uh seven uh new sample updates that include examples that run with the CLI from M365 uh from ganache and out there. So he's he's been going through the repo and adding alternative samples to existing ones, who's doing an awesome job there and we've had a new, updated sample with uh PMP Powershell.

Don't know the name of this person, but um but from lots of mock Auto one uh his GitHub handle there, but all of these updates are simply outstanding and all the contributions are super super cool all and it just makes just makes everything better for the community to share. Fantastic, let's cheer back out all right! Well, let's get to it. As fessa said our All-Stars of the day. Our first is echoir on pie, flows, power effects for internet of things. I'm super excited for this. Take it on over.

Thanks David for this, uh this was brilliant um right, so it's the first time around for me um in uh in the community called so go easy on me. If that is okay. um First of all, thank you for inviting me in to do the presentation. I'm quite excited, to show you what I've been working on. This is purely from a Power Platform perspective and people who have been working with Power Platform. They already know what powerfx is, but I will introduce you to some some interesting things about that. So who am I I'm?

uh My name is I live in a place called Yorkshire in the UK I'm. A technical development lead at resonate UCC here, um I've, quite a lot of uh interest in iot, Power, Platform and programming in general, which probably explains why I have embarked on this um Journey on trying to bring all of these together as you'll see in the presentation.

So what is this about so I'm going to be talking about iot today right and it is challenging um if anyone has ever tried to do a bit of iot it's challenging and the biggest challenge I believe is skills required to write software for the hardware devices that become a part of your circuit right. um So not all of us are able to do that. I couldn't you know conveniently and and easily, but we are okay to write local apps.

No people who have been doing power effects uh know that it's it's pretty easy to build. Apps using local languages like that, a powerfx is obviously the the you know, de facto local programming language at the moment. So the question in my mind at that point of time was, can I somehow bring all of this together right?

J

What helped me a lot uh was Microsoft open sourcing power effects, language and an example. Implementation for that language, as well with that it became easier for me to sort of design. Pi flows. um I had some major goals.

I had said put together for myself, which I wanted to meet right uh in the in the first release itself, which is that that whatever app I'm building should be able to leverage existing citizen developer skills, and it should also be able to interface with Power Platform services, like you know, canvas, apps and dataverse, and all that it should be cross-platform. And the reason is that you know it's not just the fact that the app should should uh should run on a local PC.

It should be able to run on singleboard computers like the Raspberry Pi, so it obviously need to support Linux um the the final uh and which was very important to me was it should be very simple to use. It should not be, you know, jargon filled with Hardware, you know language Etc, so that was my my primary.

Those were my primary the goals so the way I started thinking about this was I put together a rough Define with the design, as you can see, um the biggest part of the design being able to design the circuit, and it could be more than one and the system in the comfort of your own home computer, which means, if you are a iot Enthusiast. If you're a home, automation, automation, um you know enthusiasts, you should be able to put together uh the the app or the or the program as easy as putting together.

You know in a bunch of circuits together which you have helped from from many other uh many organizations these days, selling, Pi Pi, Raspberry, Pi, kids and all that right, but one of the other aspects of that was it should be. It should be accessible securely from external services, like uh you know, canvas apps and Power Platform, and all that. So all of this was in my mind when I was designing it. So I went a little bit more deeper and I started working through what is possible.

You know what is available Etc, so the design, if you like, is pretty safe. However, it's a straightforward web app, which runs on premise. It's got a little internal API, which understands power effects. You know language a bit. It also needed a little storage uh sqlite, simply because the fact that like I said I would like I would like this app to be running on singleboard computers, which which are low power computers, and we cannot be running SQL server and all this you know massive databases.

um The other thing was that it should we should when they're designing this circuit, we did not it's. It should not be a requirement that that all the entire system should be connected to uh to to the internet. So so, basically that was my that was my first goal from the with the on-premise side of things. On the on the cloud service side of things, we can build custom connectors, it's pretty easy to build custom, connectors and you know and deploy to your environment. So, but then, how do you bring them together?

So I thought well punching holes into firewall, the home firewall, not great. So what I decided was that I should use something like Azure relay hybrid connections. If you have worked with on-premise data Gateway, you probably are aware of how that kind of thing works in the sense that you know you deploy your app works uh on on premise: it is able to connect out to the network not connect in and and then you can receive messages from from uh external services, so that was the. That was the idea.

So what I'm going to do is I'm gonna, I'm. Sorry I'm, rushing through this, because I wanted to show you the demo, which is, um which is the most exciting part of this. So I've got a demo where I'm calling two circuit demo and it it's it's like two Raspberry Pi's. Basically, you know controlling different different devices and I just want to see how we can use our app to connect them together and work with them right. So let me quickly switch to uh back so this.

What you see here is this: what I call the the studio? The the studio is basically where you design your pipe flow. Now you probably see this very close to I mean this is using fluent UI, as you can see, it's using um react uh which, which you I'm sure, a lot of people. A lot of you are aware of, because you've been working on spfx Etc. So the the goal here is to make it as simple for as possible for people to basically set up flows, I'm calling it flows.

um You know, um uh but I didn't find a better word to use that, but a flow basically is a something like a a bit of a chord that reacts to things happening outside, for example, if um if someone presses a button or if they, if a web request comes through from say, for example, a a a canvas app, you know how what should it react to the most important element of is not this I mean this obviously is is typical thing. Is this one?

This is using Power FX, um the language that we use in canvas apps. So with power effects you you get to use all the usual things that comes with power effects. You know all the the typical things, for example here here you can see the the usage of Boolean. You can see the the check, the if condition Etc, but the great thing about the open source powerfx library is that we are able to write our own function.

For example, white pin is not something that we'll find in canvas app, but it is there in pi flows because we need to be able to control pins, or rather you know, connections with the in your in your devices Etc. So what you see on the on the right side of the screen is actually a very simple experiment right, so you got a Raspberry Pi. That's got that's connected to to a to a button and a light, and you've got a motor connected to another Raspberry Pi. So there there is no direct interaction between them.

The only way they interact is through our our price flow studio. So what let me explain what I mean so, if I press that button, obviously the light switch is on and uh and the motors running, as you can see, you probably are not able to hear the motor running, it's very, very, um very silent, but what I'm going to do, though, is I'm going to turn on this flow. I mean a flow can be turned on or turned off so I'm going to turn on this flow. Now this flow is it.

It adds a little bit of functionality. What it means is that when you press that button, we want the LED to switch on and off in the earlier in the earlier, when I was running it earlier, you you saw that the LED was not switching on and off.

It was just steady on, but with with that, in little addition to our flow uh to to our circuit design, we are able to flash that so that kind of of configuration is possible and it can be done without knowing anything about C, plus, plus or python, or you know, and all those phenomenal things now, one other bit that I wanted to show you.

While we are doing this is the fact that we are able to control the same circuit from externally, so I've got I've got a I was testing it with uh Postman before, but you can see that it's just like an API, an API that you can use where you can send, send messages to it, and our PI Flow app can react to that and and do things with it.

Let me switch this off first, what I'm going to do, though, I'm not going to run the the postman set of things but I'm going to interact it with using power pack. A canvas app. So here is a canvas app. The canvas has been designed such a way that it uses a custom connector to interact with our PI flow.

So I'm going to switch that on from my canvas app and you can see that it's running I've got three speeds on so I can reduce the speed and they can reduce the speed further and I can also stop. So this is canvas app interacting with our PI flows, using our Azure relay hybrid connections with custom connector in the middle. So that is a quick, very quick overview of what is happening with the app. So let me, let me quickly go back. I need to finish off with a with a few notes.

um I've got some future plans for it. I I want to support what I call devices devices are like encapsulations of complicated circuits, which you can read and write from, and you should be able to read and write from just like you would read and write from a control on a on a camera set like a button or a text box right.

I also want to want to support, bring in Power Platform connectors directly into the app, which means that from the app you should be able to use power effects to interact with, say, dataverse or uh or another Azure service I also want to add support for pi, Pico and Arduino, which these are microcontrollers.

These are not single board computers, a hundred times more complicated to to build something for a microcontroller, but I am I'm on it um and then the final thing that I want to do is to release that entire Source sword to to the community so that we can build on top of that and we can we can make.

We can make sure that citizen developers do not miss out on the fun of how home automation simply because they are because you know it's inaccessible to them because of their uh you know, programming, lack of programming, language skills or extremians right. um Finally, after all of this, a quick set of acknowledgments, a big shout out to Mike store, who is the power effects architect and at Microsoft he's helped me understand some of the nuances of the library and how powerfx works.

So I had quite a lot of detailed conversations with him on certain aspects of it and he has helped me do some interesting things with it um and that helped me build out build up on the existing code base. So so it supports you know iot related things and obviously a bunch of things I'm a Linux fan, as you can see, I I love the max. So so I do my development on Linux.

However, what I want you to look at is the fact that I'm able to use every single, open source tool, I can I, don't I I'm not restricted to a particular platform. I can use any platform I want to to build it, so that is the power of Open Source, that's a power of you, know.net and and react and visual studio code. Well, what I'm going to today talk about is uh how to automate the DLP creation policy from an existing one. So in the in the past, even I have uh spent a lot of time creating a DLP policy from an existing policy to copy it uh before I got to know about this option. So it's it's. It becomes uh quite cumbersome if you have to copy, and as of now in the Power Platform admin Center, there is no option to copy and and create a new policy. So let's look at it.

How we can actually do it and the different options you can use to copy and create a new policy. So the the first option is power. Power, automate flow, so in power automate flow. There is a connector by the name, Power Platform for admins, which has actions to manage DLP policies, and then the second option is DLP editor, it's an app from Microsoft Coe, starter kit. uh It has.

It has a canvas app which can, which has a very nice interface to copy an existing policy uh and and create a create a new new one, and then we have a Powershell proportional uh module from powerapps Administration. So uh there are a lot of commandlets to manage, which helps manage the environment, Power Platform environments, and there are also a couple of commandlets which helps us to create, delete and update a DLP policy.

And you can you can use this option for advanced uh options like, for example, if you wanted to add a custom connector to a DLP policy or if you wanted to make changes uh to a connector or whether to allow certain actions or not. So there are command lists which helps you uh do it all of these options. You have to be uh tenant administrator or a Power Platform administrator to do it.

So, for the first one power automate flow, there is a connector by the name, Power Platform for admins, which has options uh to manage the environmental life cycle, life cycle capabilities such as creating an environment deleting or updating an environment, and and on top of these commandlets uh actions, there are also actions which allows you to manage DLP policies. You can see here, for example, uh the the get DLP policy. It allows you to uh get information about an existing DLP policies.

It gives out information about the the different act, different connectors in in different categories like uh uh blocked business, non-business category, and then we have list DLP policies. We do action. This allows you to list out all the policies which exist in the tenant and then uh create update and delete as it as it suggests. As it sounds, it allows you to create, update and delete a DLP policies.

I've also got a short demo uh with you, using using this connector to create and and create a new policy from an existing policy, and and the next option is the DLP editor app. So it is, as I said. Initially, it is from uh from the Coe starter kit solution uh and, and especially from the core component solution it does. It has this app called as DLP editor app. So this is the interface here, whatever you are seeing it here.

So these are the policies uh which is in the tenant and as soon as you get inside, you you'll see options here to copy the policy so copy it. As soon as you click click on this button, you get to know you get this interface where you can enter the name of the new uh policy and after you click on copy policy, it's called a create a policy based on existing one.

It also allows you to make changes to an existing DLP policy and, and also it helps you to find out the impact uh it causes on the canvas app and the different uh cloudflow Cloud flows. So this app also uses the same connector Power Platform for admins the different actions within that connector to to create and copy the new policy, and then we have a Powershell so Powershell, as you have many have already used, uh you use this module powerapps Administration module.

It has also got commandlets which will help you to manage DLP policies so get DLP policy allows you to get information about an existing policy and then new and set allows you to create or update a policy, and then we have Veer, which is new PowerApp uh DLP connector configuration. So this commandlet allows you to make changes to the connector actions from a connector.

For example, if you, if you take an SQL connector, if you wanted to block an action delete or if you want to block an action update, you can, you can do so with the help of this command and also, uh there is also an interface from the uh from the command admin Center to make that change.

And then we have this commandlet, add custom connector to policy. So this allows you to add a custom connector to an existing policy, and there is also a sample from Microsoft which has caught a lot of examples on how to create, update or delete from an existing policy or or create a new policy moving out connections, moving out actions, connector actions from one group to another group. So there is a huge list of examples on this sample. I've got I've, given this as a reference at the end of the slide as well.

I'll go to the demo now so here uh it's it's! It's uh it's! A small tenant I've got here three policies: one is a default DLP policy which, which is applied uh to all the environments, except except eight, and if I, edit this policy- and if you have look at if you look at the characters, I've got uh 24 uh connectors in the business category, all the non uh all the non-blockable connectors are added here in the business and then in the non-business category.

All connectors, which is published from Microsoft, has been added here and all other mining connectors are are blocked.

K

So when it comes to the environment, uh so we have here uh eight eight, eight environments, which is excluded from this DLP policy and and all of these policies. All of these environments have has got this policy applied. So what we're going to now do is uh create a copy of this DLP policy, the default DLP policy and apply that to this environment. Eu Sweden marketing, Dev I've already copied the environment ID, which I will, which I will show you in a while, so I'm going to the flow.

So this is the flow which I have got here with, which has got couple of only two actions to copy and create a new policy I'm going to test the flow.

So here uh I will first enter the current name of the policy, which is.

Let me quickly copy the name default DLP policy, that is the existing DLP policy name and then the new DLP policy I'm going to make it as DLP EU marketing Dev, which is which will be dedicated to that environment, EU marketing, environment and then the environment ID for EU marketing Dev. Is this one I've already copied I'm going to run the flow.

Yeah, so you can see here, the flow has run now. Let's quickly go check if the DLP policy has been created.

Yeah, so this is the policy which got created down uh DLP EU marketing Dev. You can also see that this policy is applied to this environment, EU marketing Dev, and if we edit this policy, you can see all the connectors which we had from the default DLP business, 24, non-business, 214 and blocked right. So you can also uh improvise this flow to control.

Moving connectors from one category to another category uh using select functions, I've also written a blog post detailing about it and how to do it yeah so I will I'll Now quickly uh take a go through the DLP editor app. So this is the app from the admin Center from the Coe core component solution. Dlp editor. So here you can see here so the the whatever policy I had in the tenant I can create a copy by clicking on this button. So here enter enter the policy name.

Yeah, so after that, after click on copy policy, it's it's gonna create a new policy. Based on this, as I already said, this app from the Coe starter kit, it uses the Power Platform for admins connector, okay, so now I will quickly show the sample uh from the uh from Microsoft for Powershell.

uh You can you can see here uh this. This is the link and it has the it has the repo as well. So uh the the sample has got all the examples like uh creating a DLP policy. Copying it deleting it. So everything is here.

uh You can you'll have to just go through this and then a modified according to your needs and if you- and there is also an option to run a Powershell script from Azure, run book automation and once you have deployed it to the Azure runbook automation service, and if you wanted to call that Powershell script from a power automate flow, there are connectors which can help you do that. So you can completely automate the process if you are going to use Powershell uh for DLP automation right, so I will move over to the slide I've.

After all, right Martin, let's get into Microsoft teams phone number Management on a budget with SharePoint lists and Azure automation,.

All right, um a very short introduction about me, so my name is Martin hoist I work as a senior Microsoft 365 engineer for Julian Doki. We have our headquarters in LA, but I live in Stanford, which is in Switzerland near Zurich, I'm, also, a very freshly minted Microsoft 36 python, Services MVP since February this year and yeah, some of my favorite Technologies are Azure Microsoft, 365 teams, power, automate, Powershell graph.

Basically many different Microsoft account fees. Today, I'm going to talk very quickly about what's the the problem and what LEDs to my solution or how I uh built it, how do we deploy it? How does it work, etc? So the the problem or maybe I have to note that I work a lot with Microsoft teams, telephony, team's phone and obviously this also involves uh phone numbers.

So the phone number Management in team 7 sector is quite bad. um There is no way to manage your direct routing numbers, so you'll you'll only see the ones which are assigned to users, but there is no like complete list or overview over all your number types. You have very limited search and filter functionalities in a way to get, for example, all switch numbers uh Etc, and you always need to assign A team's administrator role for users to be able to assign and unassign numbers from new users or users who left and so on.

And of course there are a couple of third-party providers who provide such number management platforms or tools, but they are usually quite expensive. So I decided to give this a go and try on my own to create the automated solution using what we already have in Microsoft 365..

For me, that's sometimes kind of a paradox, so it's unbelievable that a circle feature is not available in Microsoft 365 because to me as a user, it's just the most logical thing, but on the other, on the other hand, it's truly amazing what we can build or achieve by leveraging the existing Microsoft Technology stack to build Solutions around a very specific problem: yeah, that's the the solution.

So in the end uh we have a SharePoint online or a Microsoft list that can be accessed through both interfaces um where we have all phone number types, uh including operator, connect. Calling plans direct routing, uh it reads: all the data uh from teams Powershell. We can get all the numbers from there, uh except for the direct routing numbers which are unassigned, but all the other ones are there as well. We can retrieve which number is assigned to which user Etc- and this in the end gives us very rich filtering capabilities.

So we have multiple columns. We can filter by country by call by number type, or is it the user number or a resource account number Etc and of course everything is automatically updated by an azure runbook.

L

But it's all done. So these are the Technologies which I used. So we have SharePoint Azure automation, Powershell the awesome, Microsoft 365 CLI developed by the PMP team, which uh helped me quite a lot to achieve my goal to make it fully automated and also power automate flow to just uh format. The list a little bit better and I really tried my best or uh yeah to uh create like a one click or one script deployment.

So, instead of uh that, you have to go or read through a very lengthy blog post and create every resource in Azure portal and do all the clicks yourself I try to make it real simple, so that anyone can just download this this script from from GitHub and hit enter or run all the dependencies are installed uh automatically. It's all the Powershell modules which are needed, node.js is installed through Wingate and finally, Microsoft 365 CLI is installed through npm, which is the node package manager, and it only takes about five to ten minutes to deploy.

uh That's until you have your list ready in SharePoint online, there is an environment, the Json file, which is used to just give few information about your environment like tenant ID. The group ID, which is the ID of the team where the the SharePoint teams item will be hosted and finally, the the list, so you can give it any name you like, and we also specify a couple of things for Azure where in which resource Group or how the resource Group should be named, the name of the automation account and the location.

The script runs. What is created in Azure? um There are a couple of resources which are deployed I'm, going to show you this right in the portal uh that statement this makes the it makes it a little bit easier.

L

um So obviously, I don't have time to run through the deployment process in this call, because it's uh very short amount of time to do the demo, but it's all pre-deployed with the latest version that's available on GitHub. So you can see we have the resource Group, we do have the automation account and a couple of Chromebooks.

L

The reason we have multiple is that, uh basically, uh there is a main run book, which is this one, the team's phone number all real, and then there are some functions which are modularized like connect to graphs and connected teams. They are separate functions which are just imported in the main wrong book, so they can be edited without having to change the code, and this also means we can reuse them for other scripts as well.

L

Also, the teams module it's type custom or the other ones are default. They are added to any newly created automation account but claims it's imported automatically through the script as well.

L

And finally, we have a couple of Rivals, um for example, uh the F secret, which is needed and also created by the script by the and all of our direct routing numbers, are stored in variable as well.

L

uh This is the Azure ID app registration that was created. We can see. We do have a secret here and also all the permissions were added by the script I'm going to show you in a second how that was done and all are already pre-consented final thing. We need to be able to manage Microsoft dreams through a service principle is to add the Skype for business administrator role to the service principle. That's also done by The Script.

So this is the structure of the repository.

L

um There is the environment, Jason and I showed in the presentation and here's the setup script. So I really wanted to do this in a way where you don't have to restart the password script. If you don't have the dependencies- and there was like a big hurdle for me at first, because anytime I installed node.js through winget, it was not available in the path arrival, so I had to restart the partial session for it to become available.

So then, I found uh this uh line of code in the internet, which basically reloads the path variable, which means the script can continue without uh restarting and I hit the same issue with the Microsoft 365 CLI. So when I was trying to do a login with npm Microsoft 365 login, it was not working.

L

Then I found out that I could just change it to npx, which lets me use the commands straight away, and here we can see that the app secret, the the app ID or the the app registration is created by the CLI with the secret and that secret is then stored locally in a hashed format. So only my machine and my user account on this particular machine will be able to decrypt it.

L

um We will decrypt it before it's uploaded to to Azure again in an encrypted variable, and here we can see that we also add a service principle for the app registration and that all the uh required cross permissions are added. So just a couple of things to manage teams as well as uh sites manage all, for example, to be able to manage the SharePoint sites uh with Microsoft growth.

Let's talk back to the presentation very quickly. Once the script has finished, uh you basically have a production, ready deployment and then the real magic is in the wrong book itself or in the script. um If no SharePoint on that list is existing, yet it will create one with the name you defined in the environment. Json. If you already have one, then no new list will be created and it will only be updated and it checks for all the values that need to be updated.

uh If you have acquired new numbers through Microsoft or operator connect or whatever they will be added. If you release numbers, they will be removed and it will even assign or try to assign Reserve numbers or unassigned numbers. So this is kind of a delegation we can give to users which don't have teams administrative access, but they can still assign numbers through that list.

So let's do a quick demo. I'm gonna show you the list which you have here and what I'm going to do is I'm, going to add a number to user through teams, admin Center, so uh just to demonstrate that the list also picks up changes which are not done um by the script itself, which might be done to another script or to another user. Through teams, admin Center.

Then I'm going into the preview and I want to change the direct routing number of Wendy roads, so I'm going to search for a non-assigned direct routing number just type in her name here and put that to reserved.

Then I want to assign a colleague plan number to another.

That user is called mic, and one thing to note here is that I'm assigning a switch number which starts with plus four one, but that user actually has a wrong usage location in Azure ID. It's set to Germany, so the script will automatically detect and change the user's usage location based on the prefix of that phone number also I want to remove the number from Bobby, and luckily this I want to.

Change if your numbers we have so we have a CSV here. This is initially used to upload the directory thing because I'm going to run it locally because of the Azure Chromebook queues, we don't run into any uh Q issue. So that's actually a little bit of time. I will just change this number from zero, nine to nine nine. So that's one removed one added number and there is a simple arrival at the beginning of the script.

If I set local password to true I can just execute it locally, because there is a switch in here which will just import all the functions from my local structure. Instead of so I'm going to run this.

L

Let us login to graph to azure, then you can see it's now trying to remove the number from this user.

L

um You can see that this user already has a number and it will be replaced with the new number. It detects that it's a direct number, um so it will also assign a voice routing policy so that the user can actually make calls um in resources.

L

There is also a country lookup table which includes prefixes for all the the countries and if you have a need to assign voice policies, you can just add your voice, routing policy name for that specific country here and if you assign a number from that country, the policy will also be drawn from here and then uh the policy can also be assigned, and now it's working on the user mic, which has the wrong usage location. So it will change it in Azure ID, actually in Azure ID.

It should already be done, but it takes a couple of seconds for Azure ID to sync it over to uh the Microsoft teams user object. So that's changed now to Switzerland. That was changed by the wrong book and then it gives me an output um for all the the entries which are updated or need to be updated Etc.

So let's go take a look at the list we can see. Number for Bobby is now on the side. The user profile stays there because it's not possible to read to delete it via graph there. The slow will remove it later on uh the flow which is connected to that list. We can see number four mic was assigned. The number for Wendy was changed. Now you saw the flow just.

uh It is Magic and uh removed the user profile from from that number, and we should also see the number 99 here which we changed uh here in the direct routing numbers.

L

So yeah that I think that pretty much uh covered every case. There is maybe one more case uh where, if a user has assignment errors, for example, if you doesn't have a license, then the status will change to uh assignment error. So you can go into the list filter by assignment errors and manually check them and but there's also more output available in the the Azure runbook output yeah.

Let's go quickly very quickly back to uh presentation, so uh yeah um we can customize this using power automate like the thing I did with the user profile. There is also more information in my two blog articles. Articles I wrote about this. uh You can just adjust the Powershell code to anything. You like you can even add additional columns to the list, for example, create a common field for a number of reservations and that uh column wouldn't get updated by the script.

uh If it's not also in the partial code- and you can use uh webhooks and Bots or, for example, if you want users to if they assign a new number or reserve a new number- and you want to them to be able to uh do not wait for the shadow, you can just uh invoke the runbook to a Macbook. So it's pretty cool uh yeah. That's just quick recap, so we have all a single view for all of our number types. uh We have one source of truths for all the numbers uh SharePoint list.

We have great search and filter capabilities. We can integrate it into teams. uh I can just add the list as a tab here and it's very easily deployed and also quite inexpensive, because you're only Built for the wrong book uh runtime in minutes per month.
