Welcome everybody: this is general SharePoint development, special interest group. This is the public link. It is February 20th 2020, so 20 20 20, which is actually kind of interesting I thought about that. One: zero! Two: two: two: zero zero! Two, two two! Now it's actually interesting now on today, and we cannot do and too big on recap off the normal open source projects so basically going through what has happened within the PMP season, core extension in preparation and the latest modernization tooling.

So everything what we do on the shipment framework side and a client-side development side, that's actually covered in a separate web weekly call- and this is mainly for the photo season, power, provisioning and solution, designs and- and these projects are always updated in here as well. Now, then, we'll have Chris Kent on the call and doing some amazing list experience adjustments with column and view formatting. We have now gone to the status with Chris that he doesn't even tell me what is gonna present so we'll see.

Will we have horses and I heard something or some rumors around submarines? Let's see if that's actually true in the Chris Kent's demo, we'll see when we get there now. The second demo is from Earvin when hooning getting started on customers in lists using BMP powershell, and this is actually quite common scenario, and quite recently, as today one of the MVP was.

I was basically saying, thank you and thank you community for the PMP poacher, because it is so easy to configure anything on a site level or in a list level or in the a site collection level using the BMV powershell. So you can easily do scripting, christian-based modifications using this tooling. An urban is gonna, concentrate on, let's say, column format in this formatting, unless I'm, completely mistaken and but we'll see when we get to here's demo section at that time.

So whole point being here is that you should be aware on the BMP powershell and the power what it actually Prem's you. So that's that's what that dem is all about, and then the last demo or at topic is actually a few updates, which we did pretty recently in the ship on development, extensibility, documentation structures, so we're working on on doing a kind of a full reef reset on the SharePoint documentation. Also because of many many reasons, so none of the not all of the shipment documentation.

It's just about SharePoint anymore, there's, also a lot of old crappy, so to say in quotes, crappy documentation, which it's not quite up to date and we're having slightly hard time on finding the resources on on getting everything up to date. So we're trying to figure out how do we move forward in a way that we use our resources of the documentation side as efficiently as possible? And the ACS is one of the MVPs helping on this side and he's working through the updated structures and updates over there.

So that's actually really good and and I'm actually waiting for that section. Also to for you to give us feedback, because we want to understand, what's relevant for you and and how we should be actually potentially change things even more because you are the key audience of all of this documentation and if you say that it's completely irrelevant for you, then that means that there's something wrong in our documentation and we need to fix that. But please please, please always there is no. What's the your feedback and your frame boot input on that one?

Let's have that discussion on Asus section and then hopefully, some Q&A in the end now quick recap on opportunities to participate in the community, and we always want to go this through, because we want to encourage you to do the demos, it's not about us doing the demos because I, don't then we when in a community people, are doing the demos we actually found out new, much more innovative ways of actually building stuff in the SharePoint or in my search phrase, I survived.

So you are more than welcome to demonstrate your solution, your approach, your practice. It doesn't have to be open source, but we don't at the same time. We don't want it to be a product selling moment or a product demo. Something in between is definitely fine. You can absolutely contributing key top using our key github channels and please please, please provide feedback. If something is missing, something you don't like.

We need to know, so we can actually serve you better because, again, you are our key objective and key audience for all of this material which is available. So please you don't like something. Let us know if you like something, that's fine as well, and please there's no on the positive feedback as well. Now, quick recap on the assets again as s PDF Docs documentation, everything around upon development, both on premises on clouds, Adams farm solutions, even on Chevron's framework, obviously shipping, their videos or shipment videos in general again is speed up videos.

We are kind of a real handing that YouTube channel to be more generic, so it will be more reprint, as a micro freeze is the five SharePoint PMPs in community channel, so we will actually have more community demos available there. As well SharePoint dev issues, you should be a familiar with that one already, and so, if you run into any depth oriented issues, please let us know using that URL, so we're able to reroute an issue to the right pm and a future crew.

An open source in general in cater blood comes a shipment or Kidz hub that comes as B&B. Those are the organizations where we host our stuff. Now, if you're not super familiar with github, this is the initiative for you, so David Warner setup. The sharing is caring initiative. Hugo Bernier has been actively helping here as well, and there are always a I think.

It's monthly calls David correct me if I'm wrong, where we actually encourage people to start contributing and the course and guidance is really there to help people to get started so we're not assuming everybody knows github and and we're not assuming that you know exactly how to work with kids up. No, no, no, that's what this is all about, so you can actually join this call and sharing is caring initiative and you will learn how to get started from basics.

Do more advanced scenarios so super super useful for everybody and it has been a lot of people who've been active in this area or part of this area or after participating on this area, so really really great initiative. Now before we go to the open source projects, I wanted to actually brace and this discussion. Because last week we released a few videos related on the Microsoft themes in the creation with SharePoint and one of the do YouTube videos which man, I recorded I, think it was last week.

I think it was last week or week before. Maybe I can't remember time flies so fast when you're having fun. It's really around. The new code solution exposed no code solution to expose your more on SharePoint Online corporate portal in Microsoft teams, and you can actually see the outcome on the right side and the whole point of this.

Video was basically to demonstrate to combination of having collaboration in Microsoft teams, but then combining that with the corporate communication or portal, and that's actually something what you can achieve already today with no code which is actually pretty cool. So the video actually works. This process true, but there's a small and let's say consideration around the video solution, which is that the video solution which I recorded only works in a web UI.

Now there are a few different MVP pop blows like Yannick ravemon and show your Ferreira I think show you are in the call as well who actually explains how to make it work in a desktop scenarios, but in both of those foot-post or a few different blog posts. It is actually mentioned that it's not supported scenario at this time, which is actually correct. Now we, however, during this week, we've been having a long discussions with Microsoft themes.

Well, not super long core discussions with my team's organization and we're looking into now enabling this as a supported scenario. So there will be an updated documentation, tutorial and updated video which will work through how to make this scenario to work in desktop in web in mobile in a supported way, and that will basically then make sure that people can truly take advantage of both birds were worlds so to say so, and collaboration in the Mike's of teams and then the corporate communication of portals in SharePoint and then surveys.

Then all the employees, through the Microsoft themes, Channel, so pretty cool set up which will definitely keep on they say drumming and promoting during the spring, in a multiple different conferences and you'll, see more on this area are definitely in future as well, and this isn't directly related on the fact that just deeper is actually who owns one Travon.

Sharepoint is nowadays owning also mics of teams, but you will see our let's say: innovation, getting more inquires more and more closer between each other, because we are now technically in the same organization or at least reporting to the same person, which is pretty cool. Now quick update, also on this one. So our SharePoint dev weekly is gonna, be reprinted slightly.

That's too much if you're, watching our ship under weekly we've been talking about this one few times in there or listening, because it's also a podcast we've been talking about this few times already, but looking into now rebranding this SP MP weekly, which is not just about death because actually quite often, we first of all, don't only talk about SharePoint in this course, and we don't definitely talk about just deaf topics on this course, because to be fair to be able to be a good to dev, you need to under to understand the end user scenarios and solution, designs and architectures as well.

So we actually talked about multiple different areas as well. Now, just a word of a warning and I completely missed all of the URLs I've heard on this slide, and we will reprint this slightly, and so it will not be up on deaf weekly anymore.

It will be reprinted as a BMP weekly, basically promoting community articles, community updates in the internet and also having a visitor either a deaf site or an on deaf side of the audience, and thank you, David for sharing and the link to the latest episode 71, where we had use freeze as a visitor, really great discussion by the way, around inclusiveness and diversity and and how it should be, taking all its chatter into account and impress the diversity of the community so really really cool and discussion.

Now, let's actually go to the PMPs and see some coral ivory and do a quick updates in here and birth is on the call to actually give it us updates, what's happening here. Yep, quick.

Update so we shipped February about one week ago and the Keating in February release was that we have a new schema. So if you want to know more about the schema, the previous cycle, we kind of did a no view of what was coming in the February 2020 schema, which now is life and the default schema. So if you extract the template, you'll get this new schema and there are some modern page.

Api is liability, improvements looking forward for the March release sold several weeks out, but was already in the queue there is some update in a timer job framework to support access tokens their time with your framework is, for example, the one being used by the scanner, multi multi threaded operations against sharepoint, and that got some additional improvements and operators again, so the Q of P R Us. It got slightly smaller, but the so some PRS that we have to so not a major big month, work faster, but some steady progress, yep.

Absolutely and then let's go to the BMP powers outside and I think we have ever been on a call because you are queued up for the demo as well. Yeah.

My here same as famous as bit, basically not a very big release, but everything that is done in pimpies has automatically magically drills down to P in P PowerShell. So that's quite nice couple of new commandlets some changes to the command list enable PNP, comm site its mode doesn't require you to have tenth level access anymore. There are some commanders now for the unified audit log, but for that you need access to the Azure management API, so there's another corresponding command.

Let's look in the help follow of these commanders to see, because you have to have specific access to these services to retrieve that, and then we have two new command lists to generate side scripts from a list from a web. They are basically the equivalent of what you find in the SPO management shell. But if you don't want the install to modules, then you can just use the pin p1 and you have the same functionality. That's it for pimpy, post and.

That's it for the powershell service actually moving on forward and modernization, so Burt yep.

Bombs, ation first about it transformation framework, the musician framework, which mainly is page transformation today. So what do we have? Some improvements in SharePoint, 2010 handling some logic to kind of really fix a suffix H publishing field HTML. So the the cases that you have like a base layout and the base node, you have like our code, it a label and then you have the field with actual data provided by the user. Okay, are you do with a label?

How do you kind of get a label on your modern page and this prefixing surface so fixing logic enables that in a smooth, easy way, we have some managed metadata improvements being done on several bug, fixes some table handling, reliability and reliability and improvements.

Not a big upcoming thing is taxonomy mapping, so paul block currently working on on this, and we expect this to be hitting the the March release still so, hopefully we'll have by the modulus some remapping, which will mean that, from my perspective, it gets to be a fairly feature complete and comes to the page transformation. This was the last big rock that we had to work on. Then about the scanner release 2.9 this week, the King.

You think there is this notification improvement, so we have multi-factor old support and we, when you provide us, username and password to be don't use the SharePoint plan. Cadential is class anymore, so we're not lying on classic or to use a. We call a charade ad to kind of get a token. Based upon your using my passwords and one little caveat there on the multi-factor hold. It gives us an access, token X token it's limited lifetime, so the scan will work in the scope of the lifetime of the access token.

But typically, when you use credentials to do the scan you're just getting like one or two site collections, so that should be fine and then they do weekly reminder. Guys. Blocks are retiring, classic shape on blocks or while they're retired, and they better stay available. We're not moving them and you can still trade them will make a slightly harder few. And if you chose to create those but they're they're della vlog forever, they will disappear in July.

So if you have della blocks, use the scan to figure out where you are and migrate them to model pages or.

Or I would actually say, even if you do not really know, are the developer, because until blocks used in your tenant use the standard to figure out whenever they are not not available anymore, people will not yell run.

The scan in the block mode, so there's a block only mode which is fairly fast, and you will have a report of all the blocks and all the dialog boxes, your complete tenant. And then you can decide like what. What do we need to do?.

Excellent, so let's actually move on and to the demo section and Christians you are we're promoted as a presenter like a minute ago, rumors are saying that we might hear something over. They don't or say some submarines. It's that correct. That sounds like a lie: okay, okay,.

Alright, everybody so I'm Chris Kent, and let's look at some list- formatting stuff. Alright, let's go over here, so we've got our classic warrior horses site. Of course you guys may not know it, but where your horses are global global doesn't just mean the land, it means the land and the sea, and the warrior horse is the master of all domains so as they do share point, of course, to track the aquatic assets that they have deployed around the world. Alright.

So if we check our aquatic assets, library here list we're going to zoom in and we're gonna just take a look at a couple of things that make this a little easier to read or a couple things that we could do now. The first is something we've looked at before. Let me zoom that in a little bit, so we can see it there. Whoa! Oh, oh, that's pretty good! So the first thing I wanna take a look at right is alternating rows.

So this is something in the past: we've done through a format and we've kind of taken care of it ourselves. But if we go to format current view, we've got kind of our first of our view. Formatting little wizards here, alternating rows styles, and we just check that right and wow. We got nice stuff going on there. You can actually edit these. If you haven't seen this, you can pick some exciting colors right. So it's aquatic so kind of do this green and blue.

Alright, if we save that that's cool one of the things to note, though, if you go to advanced mode, you can see the JSON that gets generated all right, you'll notice. In this case it's got that abstract syntax tree stuff right. So it's a little harder to read. What's going on there or anything, as you can see, is they're using this at row index. So that's what I want to talk about today is this at row index and how all that works.

So obviously one of the number one uses for this alternating row stuff, but it's got a ton of other uses. So let's take a look at those. So when we're thinking about formatting generally when you're looking at formatting, you are limited to exactly. What's in your row right, so you can get other fields that are part of the view and you can reference those and you can get. You know the current value of the field and there's a couple other context.

Type variables like the the URL of the site prior to the current date and time, but really row index is the only one that tells us something about the formatting itself, the rendering. So we can't generally reach into other rows right. So there's no grouping or aggregate type functions that we can do because we can't reach past the rows. But row index allows us to know where we are in the drawing. So let's take a look at just how it works and it will make a little more sense with it.

So this is the alternating rows. If you don't like that, we also have, in our view samples and our formatting repo. We've got an alternating row class or if you want to take a look at that JSON, it's basically a one-liner. So, for that schema we'll copy that directly had to get hub I'm going to paste that in because it's a little easier to understand than the one they've generated. The other thing is they're, using these kind of special backgrounds to their classes, which are fine, create that blue in green.

But if you take a look at like say, you're changing the theme here, you'll notice that it's it's very tied to those colors itself. So, even though the site became red, it's not really red right and that's alright. They look fine and dark, but what if we want a little more control over there right? So we could paste in this format. Alright, if we preview that you'll see that it has it's using the theme colors, so we change the look now you'll actually see that it, you know, corresponds to those themes right.

So that's already an improvement, but the way that's kind of working here. Of course we want to keep our horse Browns all right. It's doing this modulus operator on the row index. All right and that's pretty cool I mean you can do all sorts of cool stuff with that. Let's take a look at just the row index by itself, so if I come in here and let's actually remove the X I, don't like that blue green. After all, so we're gonna uncheck that and save and we're good.

So if we come in here, I'm just gonna go to this column here, we're gonna column, settings we're gonna format, this column just to demonstrate Advanced, Mode right we'll just say this is gonna, be an L type and once they get a div right and then we're gonna say our text content.

Content yeah we're gonna, say that's just the atro index right. We just want to see what that value is. So, let's make sure we add a comma all right, we'll preview, that there we go so now you start to see and let's save it, so we can move things around is that row index starts at 0 and then goes up from there, but what's unique about row index is it does not care anything about the values inside of the list? Item all right.

So if I were to sort this right, so I want to sort all these things. Let's go A to Z on our aquatic assets. Right you'll see the IDS over here change, but the row index itself does not. So that means the first row: that's ever rendered is always going to be 0 and even as we go right, we've got tons of items in this and things kind of lazy load in with our infinite scrolling right, we'll start to see it.

There you go there. It is loaded, there's load in right here we start to see the format continues to apply, and so it's still instead of row index. It's almost easier to think of this as render order right. So what do we use this for other than alternative values? So here's a scenario. Alright, so I've got this very exciting list. Let's remove that format, so we can not worry about the row index here. I'm gonna delete that now.

What if I want to do some cool stuff like right, I, want to I want to kind of change. This up. I, don't really want to show active right, I want to like change deployed, to show whether it's active or not. So, let's say, I've got a view format which I happen to have alright I'm going to come in here and I'm going to format the current view. We go to advanced mode, it's like a paste one and the one that I've got kind of prepared and when I save this, you see Wow.

So I've decided down to the show my own columns right so I'm, just showing title and I'm showing the deployed and the deployed I'm, making it red if active, is no longer true right. So it's no longer an active asset, so I want to show it in red and that's cool all right. That works just fine. The problem is now I. Have these extra column headers up here? They don't really correspond. I can do stuff with them. Then it lined up the way I want them.

It's a little weird right, so kind of the obvious solution, not really obvious, but it might be. Obviously, if you're familiar with this stuff right is to come in here and we're gonna. Add this hide column, header right. So the thing you could do on beautiful, Maps, we're gonna say hide the column. Header I'm gonna set that to true all right when I do that? Hey now, I have to worry about all that not lining up, but now I've lost my header entirely right. What does this date mean?

It's just kind of floating out here, so I could try and put something in line, but it would just look bad write. What the word deployed everywhere, so we're now we're gonna do is something it's a technique. We've used, it's called faking the header I just made it. The name of that sounds good, so I'm gonna copy one. That's got that in here and I'm gonna show you what that looks like. So all I'm gonna do is I'm gonna draw that header myself. Now. How did I do that right?

Everything gets evaluated row at a time, but what I've done here we come up here, so you can take a look at this. This is a sample that's available, but the key part here is for my column, header right so I'm. Just drawing that, like normal, my display I'm saying if the row index is 0, so it's the very first row then then I want to make it flex, otherwise don't show it alright. So by doing that, I've now got my own custom.

Header I can actually access fields that are part of the view like active, but I don't have to have a header for them. Alright, so I can completely hide that that way, I've got just what I want to show which is pretty cool, but you know we lose. Some of the functionality lose the menus right, I can't sort by these, and if I scroll down I no longer have a sticky header. Alright, so I might do something like you know, mod I will say: 30 right equals zero instead.

So now, if we preview that well actually see that the column header shows up every 30 rows all right, so we've got a lot of flexibility on how we want to do that, which is really cool and all that's made possible through row index. So, no matter what my sort or my filter is I'll have all that kind of applied. So that's pretty exciting right, but for now I'm gonna pull all that off, because we can go just slightly further for no reason at all and that's I did say that in every get.

So what if I want to just do something off the wall and pointless? Well, good news: you can so I've got this other sample here. It's called the generic rolodex. Drawing and I'm just gonna show you what we can do so we take a column like active, so that sounds exciting. We're gonna call them set it to the format this column again, I'm at a Vance mode or I can just paste. My JSON myself I paste it in here, and you guys can look through this again.

It's a sample, that's available, but if we preview this- or it will actually save it- we'll scroll over here now, we're actually gonna have a little drawing we'll come back right. So we shot the son, we got a nice little boat and then here's the water and we scroll down right. We got some little fish that show up and the water gets a little deeper as we go all right and we just keep going all the way to the bottom of this ocean.

Let's see where we're gonna go here, you notice, the IDS are still got our other sort and that's fine scroll. Scroll scroll somewhere down here the depths of the ocean. What might we see? Oh there, we go oh submarine, so we've got ourselves or a scuba horse out here. Taking a look at the submarine and whole idea. Is we arbitrarily drew this if we take a look at the format here from at this column, we're gonna flip.

Let's paste it again, so we can take a look at it, but if we come up here, all we're doing is something that's very some of the other techniques we're only drawing certain things based on when that row index. So here's the Sun it's one of those UI fabric, icons right and we're just saying just draw in the first row, then we've got our boat right, just draw it in the in the fourth row. Here alright and then we've got a little more stuff here. The fish.

Let's draw those every 24 rows right, but not the first row and then we've got down here. We've got our submarine. Alright, we want to just draw draw row number 200, because there's zero base index number to draw a horse underneath it one more below that and we handle the depth of the ocean right here in this formula for the background color. So you can actually set the RGB a value right.

So that's what we're doing here based on that row index and that gives us that nice light blue, dark blue and as we travel through the sea and that's very exciting, completely pointless, but hey now, you can do it too. So that's pretty good! So let's take a look at that.

Let's kind of summarize here on the row index, so the row index careful to keep it in mind that it has nothing to do with the value of the items, like all other tokens, do right so again think of it as like render order, and it's going to be the rendered index over rows in a view and that's going to be true, even as new rows come in right. So as you're doing that infinite scroll, it's going to keep track and you'll be able to do things with that. So it starts at 0.

This is not available in SharePoint 2019, but it is SharePoint Online only a couple things you do that so one of the key things people do besides the alternating rows is this custom header I, so turn off those existing headers check to see if it's zero and show it and there you go pretty exciting and so finally make sure you check out the full documentation on this there's a bunch of information about the row index and what you can do with it. There's also the alternating row.

Class and I didn't list them here, but we also have our custom header format and our generic row index drawing samples that are available to you within that sample repo all.

All I got excellent super useful super super super business, critical stuff, absolutely know just create demo on how to row index actually works so really reuse, but I get to see the submarines. So the rumors were true.

You use the SVG for trying to stop marine right, that's right and that wasn't in the office. Leofric I can see there say for whatever reason, but ok thank you Chris. For that one, a lot of charts on the chat window and, at the same time, I reinforced the message we do apologize. That chat isn't working at the moment, I'm actually during the demos and I'm, actually throwing a people away from the chats who have not been in this call.

So we can get new people on the chat window, so we're hitting the 250 limits, and now we know what's actually causing that now, it's matter of Nuendo to fix that. But we do apologize on on that issue. Now, let's actually move on urban one hunan side urban, you should be ready to go yeah to.

At least customization, so it's a it's a relatively basic story come to tell, but it's always good to reiterate or to reshow you to refresh your brain and show you also a bit of how you can use that these amazing demos that Kris is making and how to actually apply them to your site without using the user interface. So the idea is that I will obviously use pimpy power, so I have to the window open on my screen. If you haven't checked it out yet this is the new windows terminal or Microsoft terminal I.

Think it's called I strongly recommend that it's actually a much better experience compared to all the other PowerShell environments and not only PowerShell. This also runs the command prompt and Linux, even if you want to so that was a little sidetrack, so I am connected to my sites. The site is, is hovering here behind me, standard, empty SharePoint sites and I will start to create first, my list and for that I use the command lit new pin, pin list I, give the title.

I say projects and I wanted on the quick launch and the template is a generic list so because we're using the API behind the scenes in the user interface, you will see this called a custom list in the API, so it's called generic list. That's why there is generic list here, press ENTER and it will create a site. You don't have to specify. The URL is what we do defaults to it's less lists and then the name of the of the list.

So if I reload this page, there should be my projects here and I should have called the project project now. I want to add a field to it, so that the fields to my list project that I just created as long as you don't have any spaces in your title, you don't have to put quotes around it. So just if the name is just what else bases just enter the name of the the list here, then the display name of the field will be a project name.

You see that I put the space in the display name, so I put quotes around it and then say my internal name is project name without a space and the type of the field text presenter pants, the field is being added to the list. Now, if I reload this page now, you will see that the list, the field is not part of my infusion.

So the idea now is that I will, you can add, a go to like the settings of the list in the user interface and add of the view and an ad that's filled to your view, but you'll fish. So, basically, the easiest way, if you want to play around with the samples that Chris made is basically get a copy of that we post tree in your file system, create the lists navigate to the folder and use these command lists to very simply apply these JSON files to your list and just play around with them, see what they do. Instead of like opening the file copying the contents pasting it etc. You can, of course, also get hold of an existing list, an existing view. Take the value of this custom.

Formatted property, put it into a variable and then apply it to another list and another way. If you want to do a column for matter, it's the same idea. So if you have a field, the field also has a custom format, a property. You see your updated field that you set the custom formatter property to that value and then we'll use that custom formatter for that students. If you want to move a list from one side to another, be just a single list and nothing else, there is actually a relatively easy way for you to export a list to a provisioning template and just that specific list, and that is exports, PNP lists to provision a template. So I'm gonna be pretty quick. I, don't have anything nearly as interactive as what Chris or urban showed you what we did recently, what I wanted to take a couple minutes of everybody's time and wanted to show you some updates that we've recently made to the SharePoint developer documentation, so I just go over to aka EMS to the SharePoint development dogs. Now the only change we made was related to the table of contents on the left. I'm gonna walk through some of the changes, but they come to explain a couple things up front.

First of all, while I'm presenting this in a while, if you go back and you look at the commit history and the PRS and everything yes I'm, the one that did this- but this is not me doing this. This is similar to that issue. List updates that we made recently as well. I was just the implementer. This was done in close coordination and with the approval, Microsoft I kind of gave my two ideas: I got input from Microsoft invest, so we worked a lot on this. This was carefully planned out.

It was not just something just happened out of the blue, well, I! Guess! If you just went to the navigation one day and saw it change, it was out of blue for you, one of the other things that we looked at is well with the docks we, the the SharePoint development documentation, has got a lot of old content in it.

The docks are absolutely huge, there's a ton of content here and it's evolved over time, but there are parts of the content that are I, don't want to say, they're outdated, but they could use some refreshing and frankly, it's kind of comes down to a little bit on availability of time. How often the content is accessed, how, when the questions come up about the content and priorities and schedules and resource allocation and blah blah blah all that stuff that you always hear these things kind of come up about this.

So yes, we know that some stuff is older and we've done something to make it a little obvious that that's the case now. Another thing I want to say before we get started with this is let's review what the current, like guidance, is from Microsoft, whether you're in SharePoint, Online, SharePoint, on-prem, being SharePoint 2019 2016.

The guidance is that you should be extending SharePoint customizing SharePoint using the SharePoint framework, and you should be using the modern experience when it's available. I know that it's not available in 2016, but you should be using the SharePoint framework when that is not available to you or when that does not meet your needs. We have other development models like prior to the SharePoint framework. We had the add-in model prior to that we had features and solutions and farm and sandbox based solutions.

None of this stuff has been removed, them there's been deprioritized, but the order of what you should be using to go through and customize your SharePoint environment, depending on which environment you're, using depending on what you're trying to do goes SharePoint framework, then add-ins, then legacy style customizations.

The navigation in the table of contents is designed around that, and one of the couple of things that we've done is to make try and make things easy to find and to surface them based on what people are looking for, I've taken some of the motivation or some of the inspiration and the changes we made from the the latest update that the Microsoft teams group did where, if you really wanted to focus on two different scenarios, one is that you are an experienced SharePoint developer and you know what you're looking for so I know: I'm looking for api's I know, I'm looking for the SharePoint framework, Docs I know I'm looking for office add-ins.

We want to make that very easy for you to find, but we also wanted to make it easy for people to find stuff who were brand new to the SharePoint platform and what am I supposed to do so with that with that change, there's one gigantic change that I made that at least personally. For me, it drove me nuts, and that was in the previous navigation.

We had a section called features, but as I'm sure many of you know that's actually a thing inside of SharePoint that was introduced in 2007, but the way we were using it in the navigation when we said features really meant more like a capability and not a folder with a bunch of XML in it.

So what we've done is we've renamed that to capabilities and features, so it's more like what can I do with the product and anything that is related to the anything that's kind of like the grab bag that doesn't fit any specific development model, for example, customization or declarative based customizations, like site, theming or list formatting or site designs and site scripts or concepts around office, 365 groups and hub sites working with the site footer, and you see the other stuff that's listed there.

We wanted to put that stuff inside of one section inside of capabilities and features, so it wasn't buried away somewhere else, oh yeah, and if we get too far with this, if something doesn't make sense to you, I definitely want feedback. Send us feedback. Send us a message here in this. In this chat here, so we can actually take a look at it, but mostly please go through and put it in the SharePoint issue list the SharePoint dev Docs issues list, so we can follow it.

One of the other things that you will see too is there's a lot of places. Actually, this is a bad example, because I just found a problem, there's a lot of places where, when you would open up one of these navigation elements, you would see the exact same name as the one you just opened right here and it's a little confusing it's like well. If I went here, why didn't just go here?

This is the way it used to work and actually well it's why it works right now as well, but we're gonna fix that the way it should work, though, is that when you open up an item like hub sites, you see this overview page.

This takes you to the over the page that you used to go to, but it doesn't give you like that, extant, that extra little nesting there that might have just bothered me it might have bothered a few other people, but if it just bothered me I mean I just want to show you hey. We made this change and you can rest assured that I now sleep better and I don't get as frustrated. Looking at the docks, that's a joke! Other things we did here so around SharePoint framework.

We did a lot of reorganization here, so we got an overview of what the SharePoint framework is. You got a getting started section. How can I dive right into this webparts you're gonna notice, some things change with webparts, instead of it just diving in and start showing you a tutorial which is now then moved over here. Here's a tutorial of doing all these different things or getting started. This is really a tutorial on going through one two, three, four steps. In the past.

We had those four steps mixed in with a bunch of other stuff, and so you couldn't really tell what was step one step two now, we've kind of broken these things up. You'll also see things like: we've broken out working with web part properties in the property. Pane, we've broken those things up how to go through and extend the property pane. That's its own section.

We've got things here about concepts and scenarios, so things that are general about web parts, but they aren't like you're, not gonna, have full sections dedicated to them like how do I hide it from the toolbox or how do you configure the icon? Or how do you pre configure web parts? Those things are in concepts and scenarios. You're gonna see a node concepts and scenarios across multiple places in the nav you'll see things here like how do I work with Microsoft team.

So here's a bunch of articles here about working with Microsoft teams or working with add-ins same thing, same kind of organization concept with extensions. We did the same thing now, you're gonna see here. We only have three extensions listed we're technically. We have four now we have app customizers, we have field customizers list view command, sets and query extensions.

You see app customizers is missing, that's kind of the awkward one, because that's the one that's used here inside the getting started for going through and deploying a new extension, so that is covered and again concepts and scenarios tenant wide deployment, pre-allocated placeholders Oh, another good Copic here tenant wide deployment, we'll check this out. We have a whole section now in the SharePoint development, not specifically SharePoint framework, but around SharePoint development about all about set up a deployment. We even have a page dedicated to 2016 support.

We have a page dedicated to 2019 support as well. Let's see Oh another one, though this is a change. I love that we did this well I mean I. Did this so I'm happy? We did it you'll just so anyway, there's more stuff that you can go. Take a look at here inside SharePoint framework around SharePoint add-ins, or we have actually not added add-ins. It's just. Here's is the same kind of setup is what we have with a section before with add-ins, but what I really wanted to show you here is we have this SharePoint api's? If you know what you're looking for oh my gosh, this is so much better berry. We used to have the SharePoint REST API buried away, and we had a navigation I'm and said SharePoint, REST, API and in elements in SharePoint, REST, API v2. We actually got questions well, where's the v1. Well, it's the one that doesn't have anything listed by it.

So we just added a v1, make it simpler, AOM and lifecycle management for a ALM ap is that got moved over here? We've got PMP site, PMP, Dom, API related links, they're not buried with all the other PMP stuff, because maybe somebody is looking for an API, so it makes more sense to go to api's. Guidance in archive are the two sections that are the older content that, yes, it would be great if we could have you know, 20 people go in and spend the next three months, refreshing this content and updating it. But right now we wanted to just indicate if we used to have a section called SharePoint development overview, and that was what archive was well. A lot of people went to that first and that's not what we wanted them to do.

We wanted them to go to like getting started or SharePoint framework or SharePoint add-ins, so we've renamed it to archive it's the best of all of the worst options that we had available to us, and it simply we use the word archive to try and communicate if you need some of the old stuff. This is old guidance here right. We these things, may get moved around and updated and refreshed over time, but right now this is where it is same thing with scenario guidance. Some of this stuff is older guidance.

Some of it is newer stuff, like you've, got things about remote provisioning. That's that's, obviously, that's current. That makes a lot of sense, remote, timer job framework that was discussed earlier, the office 365 CLI, the PowerShell reference all that stuff. That's inside this scenario, guidance. The last thing that I want to highlight here. We had the section here for schema reference: we've refactored this a little bit to make sure if you know that you're looking for a specific schema via JSON schema, be it a office.

Add in schema feature schema solution whatever it is, it's all right here, it's in one spot, and we also have a page here for two pages, one for SharePoint community and one for support and feedback, and we have a whole thing where it talks about on the overview page. It explains you know what kinds of things are you looking for programming questions, here's where they go documentation bugs sample application, bugs go to the different repos that are available to us to submit your issue feature request guidance: how to go about submitting an issue issue.
