From YouTube: Electricity Maps Independent Publisher Power Platform Connector

Description

In this demo, Vitalii Sorokin walks you through the process of getting data from the Electricity Maps service: Create Power Automate Flow which uses Independent Connector for Electricity Maps API, request electricity data for the desired location, and get a response in JSON format. The second part of the demo shows a previously created Canvas app that displays two charts with power distribution by the hour for the selected region. This data comes from the Electricity Maps Independent Publisher connector. There is an availability to change a region and graphs would be updated instantly The connector has 9 actions today, including two service actions for checking API health and updating available zones. Dive In: uh can you share a little bit about yourself and because we've talked before a little bit by yourself and what was the idea why you created the custom, connector and then dive into the demo.

Oh, of course, yeah uh so about me. uh um I experienced a software developer, I worked with I've, been working with JavaScript for six years or more and then uh suddenly, I was introduced to Power Platform and I switched my job to about apps developer, to a power problem, developer uh yeah. So in my team, I was the only Pro developer. So I was doing this Fusion development jobs like PCF controls and also I, made one custom connector for our customers. Yeah.

That's why I decided I I I in September I found that there was a Microsoft hackathon program pilot program for connectors, so I stand up for this program and there was a list of a top task, connector and I search through that list and found that electricity map connector is very interesting because it can be useful for environment. It can make people uh thinking more about sustainability or something like that. So uh yeah trying to share my screen.

Yeah here is this product: uh this Maps, it shows uh production of altruistic consumption, photography and uh carbon footprint that this electricity makes by so it divided by countries by regions, uh for example. This map is showing the live carbon intensity in the countries, so I don't know why? Oh, this is like so.

uh Also, this product has open API and it doesn't need to be. You don't have to buy a subscription for this. So that's why I chose this Pro this product, so I had 360 subscription to test my connector uh and in doing this, hackathon uh is submitted to my connector and certified. Thank you for certification to and I was a team, so uh yeah I want you to show you just to show my how this connector is working.

So I decided to to make a short.

So, let's pretend that we have um like a electric vehicle and we want to charge this vehicle during the times when the carbon footprint is the lowest, uh for example,.

Okay, I can go through my actions in my connectors, while I'm here.

So you can get uh carbon intensity uh like carbon density. It means how many grams of uh Co carbon is in the CO2 is produced by uh for is made by producing one megawatt of electricity.

uh This API also has data on uh carbon test history, and it can predict some future carbon intensity.

Also, we can get some live data about how many electricity is produced and what is a source of electricity and historical data of this production of electricity, and also this uh uh API can provide with some forecasts, consumption production. So, in my case, I want to.

To get the life? Oh sorry, in the live current.

Yeah, for example, for I'm located in Canada, but I don't know why about this is this location is not included in pre-subscription, so let's choose Netherlands.

We can also Set uh one is the related for location and some options for calculations. But let's not dips on that and.

That list is very small, so probably it doesn't really make any difference. If you add long to the latitude.

Yeah um so yeah and to see results.

We can get this value of live carbon footprint and, for example, if it's uh more than no 600 grams for one kilowatt, we don't want to express our vehicle. So.

And, for example, when it's slower, we want to start our charging. Actually, we want to. We can use another connectors to to connect to this, like smarter.

All right just hit it, it's good use, uh so what we have for next one right now, uh carbon test. Is it's not that high? It's yeah, it's pretty high, but it's okay. uh So we can.

We got a application that uh it's not a good time for charging your vehicle because it has like it will make a big big, high carbon footprint, yeah and also I wanted to make the simple application canvas locations where this connect. My connector is used.

Yeah uh we're using this connector, you can get historical data, make some visualization of it, for example, by default time is in Germany, and you can see uh how uh carbon carbon.

Production is changing during the time during the day, so you can, for example, use this time for extra.

Oh, you look like uh and I'll updating your software or making some calculations and servers I'll charge your vehicle or charging I'll do online in anything and yeah. You can see.

You can see breakdown by uh type of uh logistic source like, for example, for Switzerland. We have a lot of Hydra electricity.

uh We have nuclear electricity, but.

Germany, we have a lot of call logistical solutions that goes from call um and that's okay, magic. What I wanted to show you so just ask me any questions. I can.

Thank you so much Vitaly I actually wanted to share something um on a personal note. I am super duper interested in this topic and specifically this connector. My actual degree, when I was in college, was in mechanical engineering specializing in thermo and carbon neutrality.

My specialty was in thermal as well, and that's so fantastic, because I think that just shows how powerful Power Platform is with regards to enabling everybody with the capabilities of low code, no code technology, you and I are perfect. Examples of you don't have to come from a CS background in order to make an impact in this field. So that's, oh. That makes me so happy. That's so heartwarming.

My my final Capstone project when I was graduating was about a theoretical plan to make my University's campus carbon neutral. Oh yeah. This is this was fantastic. Thank you. So much for sharing this uh I'm super excited that we had this recorder, because I want to share this with so many more people. It's such an important topic. Yeah we had a uh last year during uh uh to celebrate Earth Day. We did a ipconnector Extravaganza, really focused on this topic, but Vitalis connector was not there yet yeah.
