Zero Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs) are already being leveraged in zk-EVMs, zk-Rollups, zk-SNARKs, and other applications to enhance scalability in the Ethereum ecosystem. However, what isn't being discussed enough is ZKPs ability to enable the user-controlled web, giving users the ability to determine what data to share and with whom.

I sat down with Evan Shapiro, the founder of Mina protocol and the current CEO of Mina Foundation, to cover everything from Zero Knowledge SNARKS, privacy, and scaling, to what true decentralization means and how to achieve it.

Mina was created by Evan Shapiro and Izaak Meckler in 2017. It is one of the lightest blockchains, just 22 kB. To achieve this result, Mina implemented zk-SNARKS, a cryptography technique that leads to a significant decrease in the computational requirements needed to support a full blockchain network.

Mina is the world’s lightest blockchain, powered by participants. Rather than apply brute computing force, Mina uses advanced cryptography and recursive zk-SNARKs to design an entire blockchain that is about 22kb, the size of a couple tweets, ushering in a new era of blockchain accessibility.

With its unique privacy features and ability to connect to any website, Mina is building a private gateway between the real world and crypto—and the secure, democratic future we all deserve. Mina is stewarded by the Mina Foundation, a public benefit corporation headquartered in the United States.

Our speaker: Evan Shapiro, Chief Executive Officer of the Mina Foundation & Co-Founder of Mina Protocol

Evan Shapiro graduated from Carnegie Mellon with a BS in computer science. He then obtained his research MS while working in the CMU Personal Robotics Lab, where he did research for the HERB robotics platform. He has also worked as a software engineer for Mozilla.

As part of the Coinbase Speaker Series, Justin Mart from the Corp. Dev / Ventures Team sat down with o(1) Labs CEO Evan Shapiro for a discussion to learn more about the Coda Protocol and explore how Coda aims to expand the level of decentralization available to a cryptocurrency and the applications it is capable of.

Recently backed by Coinbase Ventures, Coda swaps the traditional blockchain for a tiny cryptographic proof, enabling a cryptocurrency as accessible as any other app or website. This makes it dramatically easier to develop user friendly crypto apps that run natively in the browser, and enables more inclusive, sustainable consensus.

zk-SNARKs are a cutting-edge cryptographic primitive that allow you to rapidly verify the accuracy of any computation without revealing any information about its inputs. In addition to being theoretically fascinating, they been used as the core components of privacy-preserving cryptocurrencies like ZCash and succinct blockchains like Coda Protocol.

Still, few people can program fluently with zk-SNARKs. That's why we developed Snarky (https://o1-labs.github.io/snarky/), a domain-specific language designed to make snark programming intuitive and fun. We'll give a high level overview of what SNARKs allow you do to and effective programming strategies, then dive into an interactive tutorial.

One of the key scalability challenges with public cryptocurrency blockchains is that their size grows linearly with the number of transactions. Mature blockchains such as Bitcoin and Ethereum contain 170GB and 1 TB of historical data respectively. New nodes joining these chains need to download this data and verify it in order to become a ""full node"". The number of full nodes is a key measure of decentralization, and difficulty becoming a full node translates into future centralization.

In this episode, we are joined by the duo of Evan Shapiro and Izaak Meckler, CEO and CTO at O(1) Labs respectively. O(1) labs is a pioneering company that uses zkSNARK technology in order to construct a cryptocurrency blockchain, called Coda, that solves the blockchain size scalability bottleneck. New nodes joining the Coda network will be able to trustlessly boot up in under a minute by verifying cryptographic proofs that attest to the validity of the current chain. This technology has great potential to enable decentralization, and for one blockchain to be a light client of another blockchain.

Topics discussed in this episode:
- Scalability challenges of current cryptocurrencies
- Background on O(1) labs and their mission statement
- How Coda uses succinct computational integrity technology (zkSNARKs) to enable further decentralization of blockchains
- Snarky - a domain specific language for zkSNARK computations
- Current state of Coda and roadmap

While zk-SNARKs represent one of the most powerful ways to deploy verifiable computations, programming directly with is comparable to writing machine code by hand, and trusting "SNARK machine code" is a lot like trusting a compiled binary without the source code. Over the past few months, O(1) Labs has been developing Snarky, a high-level DSL that enables complex applications to be written concisely and correctly. In this talk presented to the Zcash Foundation zapps working group (https://lists.z.cash.foundation/mailman/listinfo/zapps-wg) Izaak Meckler provides an explanation of the programming model and goes over examples of the developer experience of programming in Snarky.
