Conversation with Chris Caswell of 3D Central - http://www.3dcentralva.com/ - on starting an Amazon Store and an Etsy Store. Summary: you can pretty much start selling on Etsy right away, no fees. An Amazon store costs $40 per month, plus selling/referral fees. We go through the case of several 3D printed products, and selling 3D printers and kits on Amazon and Etsy. Etsy and Amazon make it easy to print labels. All together, cost of doing business on Amazon is 33%, whereas on Etsy it's 5-8% according to Chris. It becomes more favorable to be a producer, naturally, than reselling goods.
It turns out that getting Fulfilled By Amazon using their warehouses is quite attractive compared to shipping yourself using an Amazon Store.

the
real
numbers
like
if
you're
actually
doing
Amazon,
where
they
actually
can
fulfill
that
for
you
versus
you
just
shipping
yourself?

does
that
compare

look
at
the
case
for
kids,
vs.

finished
products
and
we're
gonna,
compare
that
to
Etsy
as
well
and
compared
to
if
you're,
just
selling
on
our
OSE
website
or,
however,
you
do
so.
We
have
Chris

selling
on
Amazon
for
a
bunch
of
time.
Some
of
the
highlights
I
mean
that
was
impressive
to
me
was
so
you
sold
like
800
of
the
the
headphones,
but
that
wasn't
all
in
Amazon
right,
no.

started
first
on
Kickstarter
and
then
did
a

our
own
own
website
and
eventually
onto
Amazon,
and
you
know
the
moving
things.
Products
from
these
are
our
own
distribution
means
onto
Amazon,
and
definitely
it
took
some
doing
to
set
it
up
and
it
definitely
eventually
cut
into
the
margin
on
a
per
unit
basis,
but
in
the
time
that
it's
saved
and
figuring
out
the
building
things
and
in
batches
and
then
setting
it
up
like
that,
you
know
it
became
more
efficient
and
profitable
in
the
long
term.
They
did
it
that
way.

The
first
question
for
us
is:
is
right
now
for
open
source
ecology.
Is
that
the
time
to
start
an
Amazon
store?
We've
talked
about
it
here
and
there
and
of
course
it's
Amazon
is
what
is
that,
like
the
biggest
one
of
the
biggest
I
think
the
Chinese
ones
there
yet
bigger,
but
it's
a
huge
distribution
channel
everyone's
on
it.
We
get
Amazon
stuff
all
the
time
with
Amazon
Prime,
where
we
get
supplies
for
for
what
we
build
here
so
as
a
great
channel.

also
setting
up
your
own
infrastructure
if
your
own
platform
that
you
know
can
be
can't
be
difficult,
so
starting
selling
on
a
platform
like
Amazon
there's
already
built
in
traffic,
it's
already
people
already
coming
game

buy

whereas
a
new
website
that
people
might
not
come
to.
Naturally,
it's
harder
to
to
drive
sales.

we
ended
up
starting.

selling

just
on
our

e-commerce

moved
into
selling
on
Etsy
as
well.

requests
from
Etsy,

customers
come
in

what
I
really
want

Etsy

ended
up
under
marketplace,
forces
deep
priority
and
they
were
transparent
about
it.

they
said
you
have
three
weeks
and
we're
going
to
deprioritize
in
the
search
listings,
any
storefront
that
is
not
offering
free
shipping
on
orders
over
$35.
So
we.

a

we
got

built

out
and

iterated
on
it
and
then
decided
to
list

because
more
people
were
asking
for
it.

is
something
that
it's

expensive,

we
ended
up
doing

to
